UPDATE: Mularkey mum on Jacksonville talk

UPDATE: Falcons offensive coordinator Mike Mularkey would not comment about his pending interview with the Jacksonville Jaguars on Tuesday.

“I’m totally working on the Giants,” said Mularkey during his weekly meeting with the media.  “That’s strictly all business with that and trying to get ready for that.”

Per league rule, Mularkey can’t interview with Jacksonville this week. He must be made available next week if the Falcons advance in the playoffs.

Mularkey could also become a candidate in Tampa Bay, but reiterated that he’s focused on the team’s playoff game.

“There’s just so much going on different going on during the season, during the week,” Mularkey said. ”I can’t tell you how from the minute we get here to the minute we get home, it’s just so structured that there’s not enough time to really focus on anything else. And I’m serious about that.

“Every minute has something going on in it and what’s interesting is that at the end of the week when it’s over, Friday comes around and everything is installed and put in, all the sudden it hits you on Friday, especially late in the season, you don’t realize how tired you are because you don’t have time to think about it ’til when it’s all put in. There’s too much going on, especially this time for any of us to be worried about anything, but this game.”

FLOWERY BRANCH – The Falcons have granted offensive coordinator Mike Mularkey permission to

Falcons offensive coordinator Mike Mularkey.

interview for the vacant Jacksonville job.

“They have requested an opportunity to talk to Mike Mularkey and really the league has a policy in place for wildcard teams,” Falcons coach Mike Smith said. “There is a certain time period that they can interview. We have of course signed off and granted that opportunity.”

Mularkey was a candidate last season for head coaching jobs in Cleveland and Denver. He interviewed with Cleveland, but withdrew from the Denver search. Cleveland hired Pat Shurmur and Denver hired John Fox.

Jacksonville dismissed Jack Del Rio this season. He was replaced on an interim basis by Mel Tucker.

Mularkey wants to be a head coach again. He was the Buffalo coach in 2004-05 and posted a 14-18 record.

Mularkey and Bill Musgrave, who left last season to become Minnesota’s offensive coordinator, have been lauded league-wide for their fast development of quarterback Matt Ryan and for turning the Falcons’ offense into one of the league’s top units.

Mularkey is attractive because of his background in coaching power football. Jacksonville also needs someone to develop quarterback Blaine Gabbert, who struggled in his first year in the league.

“When you have success there are going to be opportunities for guys on your staff to get head coaching jobs,” Smith said. “I don’t have any doubt in my mind that Mike’s sole focus for this week is on the New York Giants.”

All I will say if Mularkey does land the job is that we will then see if it was indeed him or Ryan that was the reason for our offensive woes. With that said, I’d like to see him leave just for that very reason. He might thrive elsewhere. Honestly, J-ville would be a good fit for him. 1) Power running game with focal point MJD 2) The guy is pretty good at developing young QBs….even if they plateau after year three under him usually (i.e. Roethlisberger) 3) Let’s be honest. The Jags will probably not land a “big name” head coach so Mularkey makes a lot of sense to at least get the organization jumpstarted again. All I ask is that he takes BVG along with him if he lands the job. :)

Oh I see. A little REVERSE psychology working here. I like the though. Make those in Jacksonville think we REALLY want him in, thereby tricking Jaxx. Sounds good in theory.

But, it they don’t select him, Falcons management might pick up these false readings from us and offer the fool (Marlarkey, Smith and Van Gorder) and extension or something…That too would be a disaster.

Perhaps his those in Falcons organization (provided the media pick up on the fans disgust and dissapointment with Mularkey and Van Gorder specifically) somehow will carryover into conversations on air, (radio, tv, blogs, etc) and that will get us the change we need.

Honestly, Mularkey would probably make a better head coach than a OC. The offensive game has passed him by. He has failed to adjust to the modern pass heavy NFL and elected to stick with a ball control offense that doesn’t work against teams that can score in less than 3 minutes in today’s NFL. He has no clue what a screen pass is, despite the fact Snelling, Quizz, and Jones are excellent at running screens. If he has a younger OC, I think he will be a good HC.

There are going to be some good OC and DC talent available. I would love to have Jason Garrett as an OC and Steve Spagnuolo as DC. Both guys make much better coordinators than head coaches, but it looks like Jones may keep Garrett. Spags or Morris would both be excellent DCs… miles better than BVG. For OC, I would go the Bengals route and hire an innovative coach that hasn’t been an OC yet.

D-Led

would the Falcons bring in Spagnuolo as the D-cordinator? The work he did with the G-Men was amazing concerning bringing in pass rushers & that’s really what our D is lacking, if he came in & added that, our D would grow by leeps & bounds! R. Morris is also an interesting name to look into as a D-cordinator, all this points to my belief that BVG’s not getting the job done & well while these names are out there this offseason, we could & should strike while the iron’s hot! D cordinators make a huge difference, just look at Gregg Williams in N.O., as good ass their offense is, they aren’t who they arer without him improving their D!

Also offensively, if McDaniel’s gets fired, do his N.E. roots move him this way? The man is NO head coach, but offensively he can draw up plays to put points on the board!!! There’s not denying that & we have as much, if not more talent then he had to work with while with the Patriots! Matt Ryan’s no Tom Brady but he’s definitely better than Matt Cassel!

I think Spags would be the ideal d coordinator to deal with the likes of Sean Payton and Rob Chudzinski (if he stays). I dont know who Tampa will have. The sad part is that he wont be on the market by the time we’re done for the year. He’s probably Philly bound. Morris would be interesting but I dont see him for a couple reasons. 1) If we actually win Sunday and the d forces turnovers, BVG might actually get a reprieve and we’ll see more of that spectacular zone we’ve grown to love. 2) So not used to this team making a big splash but hopefully Blank knows that its time to pony up to keep pace with the Saints.
On offense, we can forget Norv Turner. Too expensive and probably would wanna go to a bigger market or be the head coach again. Still come opps out there for him. We’ll probably promote the QB coach to OC which Im mixed about…..ALL contingent upon if Mularkey actually moves on.lol

We have a winning team! I don’t think it happened by accident. Just because an actual team can’t exceed your DREAMS doesn’t mean that it isn’t good. All the Falcons coaches have managed to improve the players’ performance each week. They started the season as rough as anyone in the league and they are now becoming contenders. They are starting to gel and that takes a lot of coaching work as well as a lot of hard work and concentration from all the players.

I’m anxious to see how they do in the playoffs and have high hopes. It is difficult for us to see all the behind the scenes work that Malarkey has accomplished. I hope for Jacksonville’s benefit they get a good HC. Those fans deserve a winner. Malarkey may just be a lot better HC than most realize.

So much discontent on here for the coaches and coordinators that got the Falcons out of the cesspool they were in, and made them perennial winners for four years straight. 3 out of those 4 in the playoffs.

Just looking on this blog is proof that Atlanta has a sub zero fan base for their team, and their only knowledge of football is EA Madden, and Fantasy leagues. They’ll even cheer the other team to win.

Hopefully Blank moves the team out Atlanta so the cesspool addicts can stick to their “high on ignorance”.

Great job with the Falcons, Mularkey! Good luck in your future endeavors!

torgo

Mularkey inherited an offense so inept that in 2007 it gave up as many points as it scored or more in four different games.

His trio of quarterbacks had ten career starts – combined. His starting offensive line included a rookie (Baker), a second-year player (Blalock), a career practice squad project (Dahl), and a guard turned tackle that was becoming a true starter for the first time in his career (Clabo).

The team’s top receiver from three of the previous four seasons (Alge Crumpler) had been released in a cap purge and replaced by a pure blocker (Ben Hartsock). The veteran receiver (Joe Horn) was also cut. The up and coming receiving prospect (Laurent Robinson) was injured, and the #2 TE (Martrez Milner) was released.

That offensive roster had question marks at every position and every level of the depth chart. The Sporting News (sorry to bring back a bad memory, D-Led) and other sources projected Atlanta to be hands down the worst team in the NFL.

Mularkey cobbled together an offense that would help out the inexperienced line, take pressure off of the rookie starting quarterback, get the ball in the hands of the best players, and keep the games manageable.

Instead of going 1-15 as The Sporting News predicted, that offense scored often enough to win 43 times over the next four seasons and make the playoffs in three of four years.

The man deserves a little respect.

It’s true that our roster has now outgrown our ultra-conservative offensive scheme, and that the system is now holding us back. The Falcons need to change the system. You can’t be “explosive” if your offense is based around getting into a manageable third down.

But Mularkey should be congratulated for a job well done. He wants another shot at being a head coach, and he has earned it. I hope he gets it.

And then I hope to heaven that our next offensive coordinator will be as good a fit for the Falcons in 2012 as Mularkey was in 2008.

While I admit some of the post might be a little shape, all you so call “real falcons fans” who are better than the one’s who have any sort of critique, have to be honest as well. The Falcons have all of the offensive talent it needs to beat any team in the NFL, but yet in our 5 biggest games this year Mularkey’s play calling is yet to produce more than 23 points in any of those games. Moreover we went 1-4 against play off teams this year, with a team that was clearly expected to do better throughout the year. So while Mularkey may not warrant all of the negativity that’s on this page, he does deserve some critique & all that say he doesn’t are unrealistic & ppl downing the fan base or wishing that its moved, anyone who knows football knows its what your do in the postseason that counts, ppl aren’t anti-Falcons, well some are, but most ppl are just tired of being disappointed. You don’t go 13-3, get home field throughout the playoffs & then get routed at home in your first game, THAT IS NOT OK!!! You don’t follow up being the 1st seed i the NFC to be fighting for a wild card spot & go 1-4 against playoff teams when your offseason moves we made to clearly made to make you a significantly better team & you didn’t loose much from the team you had a year ago, against those things are NOT OK, so yes ppl have a critique of Mularkey & its justified! Those who think otherwise need to wake up!!! Now all that said, i do believe that we will do something this time around in the playoffs & that our team is better suited this year for a playoff run, but again me thinking that means nothing until we make it happen!!!

If he goes, the Falcons will have a chance to pick up Todd Haley as the O-coordinator. He was responsible for the high-powered Cardinals offense with Warner, Fitzgerald, and Boldin. Things will appear very similar here. He’s not head coach material because he’s too spaced out, but he’ll be fine in a subordinate role where he can concentrate on Xs and Os. Heck, Turner will run north and south again at his old 4.5 speed without studder stepping at the line and Rodgers will be able to block 270+ DLine and not get separated from the the ball when he gets to run it. MR will be able to hit JJ in stride with a 40yard rope. All this just from getting rid of MM. Can’t wait!!

MM is doing a good job running an offense tailored to the abilities of the personal he has to work with. These guys can’t play the kind of offense you unrealistic fans want to see, it ain’t in their DNA.

Wouldn’t it be sweet to find a young 260 pound Running Back that can drop his shoulder down and level opposition’s defenders and make em think twice about trying to bring him down.

Just don’t draft a QB that he can help put the brakes on.

Interviewing during playoffs…where’s focus on the team 1st instead of thinking about yourself…why would Coach Smitty give permission, ok falcon fans…don’t be shocked and surprised that falcon season can be over Sunday…if falcons get a new OC, matt ryan will have to learn a new system and it’s not a guarantee he will be successful in it…it can be a setback…it’s 50/50 gamble..success takes time and can’t happen overnite…I just think it’s a bad decision to interview during playoffs right now.

Those on here who think MM did or is doing a great jon with the Falcons, must be relatives. Tom Brady under MM would look like John Wilson Parker. This guy(MM) is garbage and will never be a HC in the NFL again, Never! Hde will never be let go By Coach Smith so we are stuck with this incompetent OC as long as Coach Smith is HC. Smitty was streching when he said “MM has developed young QB’s in the league. WTF? Who? Matt Ryan has regress under this GUY!

Keep in mind that the Head Coach has a lot to do with how the game is called offensively and defensively. If our coordinators leave and Smitty keeps playing not to lose, we haven’t accomplished anything.

The reason that Jacksonville is so high on Mike Mularkey is that his son is a scout for the team and has strong ties down there along with Mike Smith. i hope he gets the job and then tell BVG to go call defense for Fresno State or anywhere else. Interview Todd Haley and Raheem Morris and Steve Spagnoulo and watch this team open up and become an elite team. We have almost all the pieces , we just need the players work with their strength’s and not some much their weakness. I would also trade Sam Baker , Duntahhhhh Robinson and few others for a slim jim . Also , I would tell Thomas Dimitroff to stop calling his daddy Bill Bellichick in NE and asking him who he should draft or did we forget about that mess . Good Luck Birds . Justin Tuck Suxxxx.

The Falcons need his total devotiona and attention this week.

Willie Coyote ,

Typically the coaches (in this case, the Falcons Offensive coaches) will study film on the upcoming opponent to identify ways to exploit the opponents’ weaknesses. Once you identify things that you think you can do against the opposing defense, you design a game plan, and most times will include new formatons, and plays.

From there, you develop 50 plays or more, depending upon how creative the offensive staff is, that you implement for the game. ut the opposing team is doing the same thing for you. That’s why the half time adjustments play such a big roll in the game.

“I don’t have any doubt in my mind that Mike’s sole focus for this week is on the New York Giants.”

How can that be? You mean that he’s going to the interview to tell the interviewing team what the Falcons are planning to do against the Giants?…Has that been decided already?

We just have to play our game and we will be fine. Cone head from the giants(tuck) is already talking crap. Let’s just go play falcons football. The offensive line has to be aggressive, but smart. MT33 needs to impose his will.

Coach Mularkey says he doesn’t read or observe any media and thusly won’t read this, but I just want to thank him for his time here. The man isn’t stupid and much as I’d like to believe I know about football it’s his job to view the team and observe them on a daily basis. I have no doubt he believes he is putting them in the best position to win, man I’d just like to see more of that Jaquizz Rodgers TD at Carolina action.

Regardless, if it’s a new head coaching opportunity. Thanks for making this an offense that scores effectively and efficiently coach. I get frustrated, because I believe they can and should do better a lot, but you were a big part of helping this team become a quality football team and I thank you for it.

Also, an interview is a freaking interview. You don’t have to prepare for it. go in be yourself, answer questions.

It’s not like you need a presentation to get hired if you are getting that interview. Either you can be an NFL head coach or you can’t. Chances are, if you bring a Power Point presentation to the interview, you can’t.

You guys who want to fire the staff make me laugh, including and especially Jeff Schultz. Do any of you remember where we were before this staff was hired. Go count the banners in those rafters at the dome from the 40 years of football before Smith, Mularky, Van Gorder and the QB y’all like to call a choker got here. Saying to replace anyone on this staff makes you a complete imbecile when it comes to understanding the NFL. I can understand that from casual fans, from a professional writer like Schultz is a joke.

New blood and thinking will go along way toward advancing the Falons offense for the future, anyone notice that BVG has not come up in a conversation from another team of interest????????????

Spagnola would be a great addition and replacement for BVG as would Del Rio, don’t get cold feet, TD and Smitty need to make changes.

Jay Dubu, you responded to me but your comment didn’t have anything to do with mine so I think you meant to respond to someone else.

Someone mentioned Mike Martz’s name. That is a BAD idea.

I will stand by that we can get better on offense, whether Mularky stays or goes, only if Smitty stops playing not to lose against good teams.

what you wish for.
Falcons need Players on defense…don’t knock the DC.
Falcons need O-Linemen and future RB on offense….don’t knock the OC
This is far from a finished product. But think how far they’ve come in a few short years.

When given a lead.....

Falcons have gone conservative with leads and have not put away teams. That is a head coaches responsibility to keep pressing. MIke Smith has been our greatest coach and deserves the utmost respect. But he, as everyone else, can get better.
Leeman Bennett learned the hard way about going conservative with too much time remaining against Dallas in ‘80 playoffs.
That devastating loss pretty much set the franchise back 2 decades.
Use clock management better till there’s no more clock left.
And give players some fault when there’s lack of execution.
