Still seething from their embarrassing loss to New Orleans on national TV, the Falcons took out their angst on the Tampa Bay Bucs, beating them 45-24 Sunday at the Georgia Dome while improving to a No. 5 playoff seeding.
The victory by the Falcons, coupled with Green Bay’s 45-41 win over Detroit, helped them avoid another meeting with New Orleans. The Saints beat the Falcons twice this season, including a 45-16 shellacking the previous Monday.
The Falcons (10-6), who will face the New York Giants in the wild-card round of the NFC playoffs at 1 p.m. Sunday at MetLife Stadium, also recorded the first back-to-back 10-win seasons in franchise history.
“We wanted to bounce back strong,” said linebacker Curtis Lofton, who returned an interception 26 yards for a touchdown in the second quarter.
The Falcons, set to make their second consecutive playoff appearance for the first time in team history, will travel to play the NFC East champion.
“Everybody is excited about the opportunity to be back in the playoffs and have a chance to go to the Super Bowl,” said quarterback Matt Ryan, who’s 0-2 in the playoffs.
Looking to gather some momentum heading into the playoffs, the Falcons smothered the hapless Buccaneers (4-12), scoring on their first five possessions and had Lofton’s touchdown make it a 42-0 lead midway through the second quarter.
“We wanted to play our final regular-season game with a lot of energy and intensity,” Falcons coach Mike Smith said. “I thought we did that in all three phases of the game. We wanted to come out and set the tempo with our execution.”
In building the comfortable margin, running back Michael Turner, broke loose for 172 yards on 17 carries and scored two touchdowns. Overall, the Falcons rushed 38 times for 251 yards.
“It felt really good for us up front,” center Todd McClure said. “All of those guys were running the ball well. It’s going to be big for us having that momentum going into the playoffs.”
The first play of the game was a power run right up the middle, Turner ran for 26 yards, and that set the tone. The Falcons played as if they already were in postseason mode.
“That was our mindset all week,” McClure said. “The playoffs started for us today. This team was focused and I think it showed, especially in the first half.”
The Bucs added some token scores in the second half after the Falcons emptied their bench.
News of Green Bay’s win made its way to the Falcons’ sideline during the game.
“I think I became aware of it with about three minutes to go in the half,” Smith said.
Individual rewards were plentiful for the Falcons, too. Ryan, Turner and wide receiver Roddy White all etched their names into the team record book.
Ryan broke the Falcons’ single-season passing mark with a 48-yard touchdown pass to Julio Jones in the first quarter. The quarterback moved past Jeff George’s mark of 4,173 yards set in 1995. Ryan, who completed 6 of 9 passes for 106 yards and two touchdowns, threw for 4,177 yards this season.
“It’s obviously a great honor and something that is special,” Ryan said. “It’s not something that I get too hung up on. We’ve got a lot more important things ahead of us over the next couple of weeks.”
Turner broke Gerald Riggs 23-year club record for most rushing touchdowns. Turner scored on runs 1 and 81 yards, giving him 49 rushing TDs with the Falcons. Riggs had 47.
“It’s about time,” Riggs said.
White became the team’s all-team leader in yards receiving, passing Terance Mathis’ mark of 7,349 set in 1994-2001. White, who caught four passes for 69 yards, generated 7,374 yards receiving this season.
The Falcons now want to make some noise in the playoffs, after early exits last year and in 2008.
“If you look at our offense, we have a ton of weapons,” Lofton said. “When you look at our defense, we are right up there in the league with the best of them.”
The Falcons, upset by Green Bay 48-21 last year in the first round, have a newfound confidence as they return to the postseason.
“Last year is last year,” Lofton said. “You can’t always be looking in the past. We’re a good team. We are not the same team that we were last year. We’re ready to go.”

Mike Smith is the most consistent coach we have had in our history. Who would have thunk – he came here almost like a temporary replacement to the Petrino debacle. With that said, he needs to win some playoff games soon or else we cannot call him our best coach ever. But he is already the most consistent.

We could have honestly scored 60+ today. We obviously laid off the gas. Onto Dallas next week! I think we face Dallas in the 1st round. That’s who I prefer. Dome, Romo chokes often, etc.
I’m just happy to be in the postseason. Everyone’s 0-0 now.

I AM A FALCONS FAN BUT IT IS SO AMAZING THAT YOU ALL ARE HAPPY WITH THE STATE OF THIS CURRENT TEAM.
**************THE SAINTS HAVE RUN THE FALCONS OUT OF THE DIVISION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!**************
THE FALCONS ARE SO SCARED TO PLAY THE SAINTS AGAIN THAT THEY ARE HAPPY TO PLAY DALLAS OR THE GIANTS BECAUSE IT SHOULD BE EASY??? WOW!
IF THE FALCONS BEAT ON THE BUCS, THIS REALLY MEANS WE ARE STILL A VERY SAD AND HORRIBLE TEAM.
WE GET TOO EXCITED ON THE FIELD WHEN WE THINK WE ARE WINNING GAMES. RODDY “THE DROP BALL” WHITE JUST ACTS PLAIN DUMB AND STUPID. IT’S EMBARRASING.
ESPN ANALYSTS HAVE SAID THIS TEAM IS A PRODUCT OF IT’S COACH. THEY ARE ABSOLUTELY RIGHT. SMITTY LOOKS SO DUMB ON THE SIDELINE. IT’S CRAZY!
I HAVE BEEN A FAN BUT AGAIN- THE BOTTON LINE IS THIS:
*********************THE SAINTS HAVE RUN THE FALCONS OUT OF THE DIVISION*********************

Da Birds are world champs vs. the Bucs, Jags, & Panthers………..they will struggle to even beat the Giants especially in NY, soon as they play the Saints, Packers, or SF its over, the secondary still stinks, Abraham is a stud against patsys, a no show vs. Packers & Saints, they have 3 players on D, Spoon, Moore, & Lofton thats it…….1 & done is a reality!!!!!

I am happy with this, above poster. Facon’s are constistent right now, for the first time every. They are not as good as Green Bay or New Orleans. But they have a chance to beat either team if things go their way, especially New Orleans. If you are not happy with the way the Falcon’s are now, then change teams man. It’s just football. You pick an team, you root for them, and you go along with your life. You are investing too much of yourself in it.

A few comments here – When you have a team down 42-0, you put your foot on their throat and demolish them. This is the NFL not your neighbors in Pop-Warner football! You decided to ease up and they came back with 24 points, 2nd half was an embarrassment. Hope it does not caary over? You sent a 190lb running back up the middle late in game and he loses ball on 1 yd line, dumb move. He needs to run wide or in space at his size? I still like being in PLAYOFFS, it will be fun but don’t really think we can win one of the road, no matter where we play?

Michael M, I think the people in New Orleans are tired of hearing the sad Katrina jokes.
It’s not funny. Everyone has opinions and you can’t change them so don’t get an attitude.
Imagine if you and your family lost everything (and I mean everything) by flood waters or fire? What would you do? How would you feel?
I think someone like you would want sympathy. The WHO DAT NATION does not want or need that!
We’ve moved on with our ELITE football team. Thank you very much!

Way to go Falcons. You trashed a team which has won a grand total of four games this season. The fans of Atlanta should be attending a ticker tape parade tomorrow morning. Now the local sports writers can go back to predicting scenarios like they did before the falcons played the Saints last week. Maybe Atlanta can go further into the playoffs based upon who else loses.

I’m not impressed with this win against the Bucs after I witnessed this team play last week. Plus the Bucs have lost 9 games in a row. If your getting excited about the Falcons after this win, you need to go check yourself into an institution. I wanna see our Dirty Birds play with that type of intensity all the time. Not just against teams with losing records. Let’s go Falcons, the playoffs start next week!!!!

@ Joe
We ATL fans have settled for mediocrity too long. As long as I have been a ATL fan in all sports for about 30 years, we have been foolish to get excited with victories like this over weaker opponents. It’s like Tech and ugag. They beat up on the lesser teams, but get embarrassed against the elite teams. That’s our history in Atl and will continue until we demand better. We must raise the bar with the Falcons and demand more from them instead of settling for winning seasons and making the playoffs.

Our front defensive line is a joke. four on four and we never got to the QB. I watched Ray Edwards what a bust. I thought he would be a good pick up but he is just stealing money, bad pick-up TD. We nned a tight end that can go deep, not 7 million for a 10 yard 5 yard tight end who can not run after the catch, come on TD what were you thinking. We will be one an done next week.

@ Who Dat!
You are correct that NO has a very good team, coaches and front office.
BUT, let’s not forget that since Katrina, the Saints have had everyone in the NFL, media and band wagon pile-oners helping out every way possible. If you think that NO doesn’t get the benefit of the doubt on penalties, just ask the Vikings from a couple of years ago or look at the ATL game tape from two games ago – Lofton fined for that hit and the flags stay in the pockets on the Reggie Kelly’s hit??? NO has taken the place of the 49ers from the 80’s as being the NFL “golden team” gift recipients. In reality, neither team needed the help but it’s harder to beat the 11 guys as well as the stripes every week.
Falclowns are scared of the Saints...FACT!
