Former Falcons linebacker Chris Draft is mourning the loss of his wife LaKeasha Monique Rutledge Draft, who passed away on Tuesday after a battle with cancer.

Draft made this post on his website, “My wife, (La)Keasha Monique Rutledge Draft passed away today at 12:04 pm. RIP Sweetie.”

Draft’s media manager, Sidmel Estes, confirmed the passing and stated that the services will be held in South Carolina on Saturday at 1 p.m. with Pastor Olu Brown, of Impact United Methodist Church in Atlanta, officiating. Also, Edwin Turnipseed, a support pastor at Impact, will participate in the ceremony.

Draft , a sixth-round pick out of Stanford by the Chicago Bears in 1998, went on to play 12 years in the NFL. He played for the Falcons from 2000 to 2004. He also played for San Francisco, Carolina, St. Louis and Buffalo.

The civic minded Draft, a California native who elected to make Atlanta his home, has been a tireless worker with kids in the community through his foundation.

He also has been a popular speaker at the NFL Rookie Symposium, where veteran players talk to the new players coming into the league about the pitfalls of pro football.

Back in 2002, Draft helped pull a man from a burning car on Interstate-85 in Duluth, Ga.

Dear Chris,
I am very sorry to hear about Keasha passing away. My prayers are with you & your family.
I lost my husband Steven A. Jones to cancer in October 2000 & it is very hard, but may you find comfort in the Lord. On my bad days I try to remember all the good times me & Steve had.
God Bless you.

I had the pleasure of working with Keasha at Sanofi. She was soooo charismatic and hysterical! She always cracked me up! It has been years since I have spoken with her. I think the last time I saw her was at Ruth’s Chris in Charlotte during the CIAA a few years back.

Keasha, I’m just finding out about your illness and it has saddened me to my core. But the agape love you and Chris shared should be an example for ALL. So you have left a beautiful legacy for people to model after. On behalf of everyone who concurs with my thoughts, thanks for the lesson.

I learned a long time ago that trying to win an argument with an IDIOT like JC or Blasphemer is a losing cause. They will bring you down to their level and BEAT you to DEATH with experience. That said, Chris Draft may God Bless you and your family during this time of loss. One day at a time my friend, one day at a time!

Dear Mr. Draft,

The video of your wedding was both beautiful and touching. I’ve been a Falcons fan my entire life. Although you were a terrific football player, you have proven that you are an even better man. I’m truly sorry for your loss. I haven’t experienced the loss of a wife but my father did die of a heart attack last year at 69, I understand have difficult it is to lose someone so close to you. God loves you and your family and so do I. I will pray that everyone close to her will find peace and that

Sir my prayers go out to you and your wife’s family. I too lost my wife due to a disease and its not easy. Life loses its luster, its color and a part of you is gone. You will rise again and God has a plan for you. I have been able to speak to many about my sorrow and victories with God’s help. I believe he uses me in that way. You to will be made whole again! You will know when that time will be along with GOD. No else can tell you when that time is. Grieve and find that something to live for again!!!! May God bless you Chris. reyxuarez@bellsouth.net
