Q&A: Coach Mike Smith sifts through the rubble

New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees passes during the second quarter. AP

NEW ORLEANS — Falcons coach Mike Smith was caught off guard by his team’s woeful performance against the Saints.

“I didn’t see that coming,” Smith said.

Here’s what he had to say after the Saints routed the Falcons 45-16 on Monday night.

OPENING STATEMENT: We obviously are disappointed in the way that we played i the ball game tonight. We didn’t play well enough in any phase of the game to give ourselves a chance to win. We didn’t make enough plays. There were some opportunities early on and then it kind of got out of hand there at the end.

ON WHERE IT WENT SIDEWAYS: We were 0 for 3 in the red zone. We didn’t score touchdowns when we got down there. We really had a tough time in the first half stopping them on third down. They were 8 for 8 on third downs and we had some very favorable down and distances. Third-and-8, third-and-10, third-and-12, third-and-13 and we weren’t able to get them off the field. That was really the thing that happened there in the first half. I thought the special teams played well through the first 30 minutes. Then in the second half they gave up the real long kickoff return to Sproles. . . That’s kind of where it got out of hand and got out of whack. We had way too many penalties. The penalties were very lopsided in terms of penalties committed against our team. Some of them happened in the red zone and knocked up behind the sticks and early in the ball game as well.

ON TRYING TO RALLY IN THE SECOND HALF LIKE THEY DID AGAINST CAROLINA: No doubt about it. We knew we had to come out and play one play at a time. We went out there and got an interception on that first series defensively, but the offense had a three and out. Then the next drive I believe they went down and scored on an 80-yard drive. They had way too many long drives where they were moving the ball in chunks.

ON THE PASS DEFENSE: We had some opportunities to get them on the ground twice there in the first half and he was able to get out. If you don’t get the pressure and affect Drew, he’s going to make the throws. That’s what they did today. Unfortunately, we did not play very well today. I know that our guys are disappointed in the way that we performed.

ON IF THE SAINTS RAN UP THE SCORE AT THE END: Drew Brees has had an outstanding season in terms of the number of yards that he’s thrown for. My hat is off to Drew. That’s a longtime record here in the NFL. He accomplished that tonight against us.

ON THE STATE OF THE DEFENSE: I hope it’s an aberration in terms of the way that we’ve been playing defense. We had some opportunities there in the first half where the ball was thrown. We had opportunities to intercept it and we didn’t intercept it and they were able to continue and keep their drives alive. It happened twice in the first half. We were not on top of our game in any phase in terms of our football team in my mind. We just weren’t playing very consistently. It was just not the type of effort that you want to have when so much is on the line in terms of what the outcome could have meant to our football team.

ON HOW HE FELT COMING INTO THE GAME: I felt like we have a very good week of preparation. I though the guys handled Christmas Day and Christmas break that we had built into our schedule. I didn’t see this coming. We didn’t play Atlanta Falcons football and the scoreboard indicates that.

ON WHY THEY DIDN’T RUN MORE NO-HUDDLE: I think we ran a little bit more than that (six plays). Early in the game we moved the ball down the field. In the third drive, we jumped into our no huddle. We moved the ball down the field, but we weren’t able to put it in the end zone. Then in the second half we ran some of our no huddle out of our 21 personnel package. We were running it not out of our 3-wide set. We were running it out of two-back, one-tight end set.

ON REGROUPING: It’s just like any other week. We have to make corrections. We have to evaluate the film. Believe it or not, there’s going to be some positives that you’re going to be able to take out of this game.

ON THE TEAM BEING TOO HAPPY ABOUT BEING IN THE PLAYOFFS: There was a lot to play for in this ball game in terms of seeding in the post-season tournament. Believe me, our internal goals are much higher than just making the playoffs and being a participant in the playoff field. We knew what was at stake tonight. We knew that we didn’t have complete control, but we had an opportunity if we would have taken care of business there would have been a potential to move up in the seedings. . . we are disappointed. But no, I don’t think it had anything to do with us becoming a member of the playoff picture and securing a spot. We were fighting our tails off before the ball game to try to enhance and get our seeding a little bit higher.

FOLLOWUP ON IF THE SAINTS RAN UP THE SCORE TO GET BREES THE RECORD: Again, guys I’m not going to comment on that in terms of running up the score. It’s our job to go out there and stop them. I doesn’t matter if they are running the ball or throwing the ball. The job of our defense is to go out and stop them. Again, my hat is off to Drew Brees. It’s a record that’s been long-standing. He’s had a great season.

I didn’t think the Saints were running up the score at the end, but they were obviously trying to pad Brees’ stats so he could get the passing record before tha game ended. I’m surprised and a little disappointed that the Falcons didn’t seem more motivated to keep Brees from setting the record against them. At then end of the game, something as simple as taking an offsides penalty would likely have prevented Brees from setting the record until next week. It might seem a little cheap to prevent him from breaking the record by taking a penalty, but it also seemed a little cheap to set the record by passing when the Saints would normally be running out the clock.

It’s all about the quarterback. Ryan is good. Brees is super-great. If the Falcons had Brees, the score would have been reversed, as well as the teams’ fortunes.

DMF, I totally agree. Smitty never seems to say anything controversial. I, for one, didn’t feel they were running up the score; they wanted him to get it, and I like how Smitty said that “it’s our job to go out and stop them whether they are throwing the ball or running the ball.” Congrats to Brees and the Saints! Looking forward to next week and the week after!

Something tells me the Falcons blew this game knowing they’d face the Saints in the playoffs in 2 weeks. They wanted to see what the Saints did best, then use that against them in the playoff game. You really think the Falcons played their hardest and lose 45-16? Call me crazy, but that’s IMO.

I can’t think of a single player who had a good game…Ryan played okay…didn’t turn the ball over…but, you have to get the ball in the end zone..of course some of the blame also has to go to that bunch of mularky we call an OC…seriously!…we had 11 days to prepare (and I waited 11 days to see) and that showing is the best we could come up with…dang, if we can’t do any better than this, we don’t deserve the playoffs….truly tonight we saw just how far away from an elitre team we truly are…two high pressure games against elite teams GB 48-21…and it wasnt even that close….NO 45-16 and it wasn’t even that close…shakes head

We need a break away running back. Mike Turner rumbles, but we have no one that can break away. I guess we’ll draft a 160 lb RB in the 6th round that will be knocked backwards whenever someone breathes on him.

Falcons clinched playoff spot Sunday. This was a meaningless exhibition game for the Falcons. Nobody got hurt, that’s all that matters. And we’re in the playoffs, that’s all that matters. Hopefully we will see a third and final REMATCH that COUNTS in the PLAYOFFS in NEW ORLEANS. Records don’t matter, season doesn’t matter, states don’t matter because it’s WINNER TAKE ALL, BABY!

If we have a rematch it will be a rare opportunity to bet (and win) on an absolute sure thing. No matter the Vegas line, bet everything you have and everything you can borrow against the Falcons.

They are 2-10 in their last 12 against NO and have mentally capitulated. The 4th down stop in OT in the first game will be remembered as the turning point in the Smith regime-after that, the deluge!

Cant play zone and rush 3and 4 guys he eats it alive. I mean could playing man and bringing pressure work worse? The Zone defence against an elite passer is death, the teams that beat NO this year maned up and came after Brees. The Idea with zone is to hit the reciever and knock the ball out, and thats a penalty now.

Falcons are pretenders. Two wins against teams with winning records. That says it all. The defense is as weak as it’s been in several years. This season will end the same way last year did. With a tremendous thud.

Clearly this season has been a disappointing one and unfortunately many Falcon fans are just happy making the PO but this team had sooo much promise, a loaded offense that should be in the Top 3 in all offensive categories but is instead is just middle of the road…
I’m at the point that I hope we lose the next two so that Mr. Blank will look for a better coach as Smitty and his his staff are out coached weekly.

exactly right ctfalconsfan, Tim, What?, and dawgforlife. Hard to say it any better. I think it is very obvious to most people that our defense is weak. Our run defense is better than they showed last night but our pass defense is always bad, year after year. The main reason for that is our pass rush is always the worst in the NFL. Our offense is better than most but play calls are consistently predictable, overall pitiful. Both coordinators need to go and if Smith cant do it he needs to go also.

I’ve been a Falcon fan for 32 years and what is so frustrating is we are still not one of the best teams in the league. Blank has brought a lot of talent to this team, and under Smith we are better than we have been in the past, but we are not good enough to beat teams in the playoffs and have no chance to go to the Super Bowl. We are so bad in some key positions. Has anyone watched these games? Our defensive front 4 needs to be CUT and replaced with really, anybody. It is so obvious. Our DBs are not good enough but really are asked to do too much because our front 7 is so weak. If we did have Bill Cower I am sure he would clean house on defense cause he would not stand for such mediocrity and inconsistency.

“The Saints have defeated the Falcons twice already and that’s got to be in the heads of the Atlanta players.” — Pat Yasinskas, ESPN NFCS

That’s true, if the Saints get a early lead in the playoffs against ATL, I think the birds will roll over.

It is also apparent that that is true as well for their fans, the Saints are definitely in their heads now.

So much for all the talk about keeping this a close game. I said it would be a blow out, and I was vindicated.

I am a Saints fan to the core but all this talk about Mike Smith needing to go, is abosulutely crazy. He’s the best coach the ATL has had in decades, and some of you want to get rid of him. Shameful.

Why do we keep coming back to this every other week. STOP IT!! The falcons secondary is horrible and has always been. The pass rush is sub par at best (on one side). I wonder if I’m the only one living in reality……..We need a new D Coordinator (OC to for that matter).
The falcons have never invested in a good secondary yet, which is crazy because the NFC has become a pass first confrence. The falcons has no chance to win in the playoff, not even against the Lions. The falcons have not beat a good team once this year (they beat the lions when they running backs were injured and Stafford was not at a 100%). I’m not going to get my hopes up because i know the out come of this playoff run, and it’s not good. My only problem, is the fans keep watching us beat below average teams, they’ll beat Tampa Bay this weekend and the fans will think its all good again. The week after the falcons will get smashed in the first round of the playoffs. The point is…….If the fans don’t start being honest and complaining about the product on the field, we’ll be doing this same thing next year.

For one, there is no defense, Dunta – Doesn’t and Abraham couldn’t pass rush the old folks home. Where is this expensive interior line (Jerry and the Peters)? Smitty needs to look hard at keeping Van Gorder, and consider getting rid of Mulelarkey also. If Spagnola becomes available dump Van Gorder and get Sagnola. Maybe he can motivate that bunch. Very lack luster, and no heart.

I’ve seen several posts on here saying this or that player is no good, and I have to disagree. We have some very fast, athletic and smart players on our defense. We just ask them to do dumb things. What I don’t get is why we’re mostly playing a soft zone. We’re essentially in a “prevent” defense most of the time. When have you ever seen it prevent anything bad from happening? We have the personnel to have a swarming, aggressive defense like Pittsburgh or Baltimore, but we don’t take advantage of the talent we have.

On offense, we really miss Harvey Dahl, and we need a stud LT. You saw how the Saints O-line abused us last night. The center of their line is huge and strong. Their tackles are quick and athletic. Fix the O-line and we’ll become an elite offense. Oh, and learn how to run a screen play!

I wonder how long Smitty is going to go with Brian VanGorder as his DC. The guy blows. There’s a reason the defense hasn’t been able to get off the field on 3rd down for the past 3 years. It’s not the players, it’s the college type scheme that we run and the college type idiot we have running it. Fire VanGorder. He’s outclassed when it comes to going against elite QBs and/or aggressive offensive playcallers like a Sean Payton.

Are you folks ready to believe me yet? The Falcons are not ready for prime time and the playoffs is going to be an embarrassment, but last night should a fool the light. Malarky is out of his mind. Who in their right mind is going to put a 5′6″ back in to block a defensive end? Then have to watch him tackle the end to stop im. Yep, you guessed right this time, Malarky.

I’ve said this before too, if the one perticular defensive backs, yeah, and some of the others too, insist on looking like witch doctors, then go to Hati and do it right. But if you want to play football cut those damn worms off your head and study football. You are a joke and a sad excuse to call yourself part of a football team. As fans we must demand a better product on the field, a better system from the coaches. Yes we have some good players but what’s the point if the coaches can’t get them to where they need to be. The flip side of that is, do you really want a coach that want get rid of a player that’s not producing? or a Coordinator that’s over his head? Rise up fans, force them to do better at the top. I just heard the same speach I heard after the Texan game last night.

Smith, thanks for getting the Falcons up for a key Monday night game, right. BVG, i.e. “clueless”….9 for 9 on 3rd down, many in long situations & you can’t stop them. Tired of hearing about you coaching Ga., time to go back to college. Mularkey, get a head coaching job, then M. Ryan can run no-huddle and we’ll be much better. Thomas D..”thanks for” D Robinson, T DeCoud, Ray Edwards, a punter who can’t punt or kick off, great job…..Not sure they can beat Tampa Bay, “back into playoffs” Prediction: One (1) and done, if they play the Saints it will be another blowout. As for Saints running up the score, who cares, they should have the Falcons didn’t earn the right for NO to stop playing.

Bosher had a bad start to his rookie season, but has gotten better since then. As for not kicking out of the end zone, it’s the ST coach/Smitty that instructs the kid to directional kick in order for the coverage to have some type of advantage. That didn’t work last night unfortunately.

Hmm things that were on the line…. 3 seed. Pride. Not being a freaking embarrassment on national TV Again. Penalties, field goals, mistakes. There is no semblance of a worthy post season team here. Even the 5th seed feels like a pipe dream today. This ride to the playoffs feels more like a trip to the Slaughterhouse. I don’t care if Jesus himself plays qb for New Orleans. It is Thomas Dimitroffs job to find players to beat him and Smittys job to coach what is here. We are not even close. Grimes is the only guy who even competes with his man in the secondary

I’ve been saying its the coaching and/or the scheme for the longest. Thing is, what it’s going to take for Smitty to realize he has to change it? 3 years of the same crap and it’s like he’s looking for the defense to automatically right itself. I’m starting to think he’s clueless about why his team can’t get off the field on 3rd down.

Would have been nice if somebody would have asked the coach about the fact that they are going into the playoffs having beaten only 2 (for now as the Titans may end up with an 8 & 8 season) teams with a winning record. The sad part about all this….the Falcons will proably play the Saints again in the first round of the playoffs……….if Mike Smith and his group of bumbling coordinators aren’t scared, someone should check their desks for drugs. I hate the Saints, but the falcons are not even close to being able to beat them. The one win they got was when the Saints kicker missed a 27 yard field goal. They used two running backs last night, the other two running backs will be healthy for round one. So if it’s in the air or on the ground, they will get drugggggeeeddd again across the terf.

When you dont have the play makers on Defense to stop Brees either by the rush or pass coverage you will get beat EVERYTIME. The defense is horrible… Did 93 play at all last night??? I mean man, I understand he’s coming off a knee injury but to just totally not show up this year is amazing. We dont have the secondary that can cover guys to make up for the lack of pass rush. Either we improve one or the other. If not, we will continue to be 5th or 6th best in the NFC. Maybe we need to get out the soft zone we run and play bump and run with some blitz schemes. If you got the high dollar Robinson and a goos corner in Grimes you sould be able to play man more than we do now. I think the high dollar Robinson can’t play man. He’s pitaful at best. I would say he made “A” good play last night. But that was maybe his 2nd or 3rd pick all season. To be paid that much money he has to produce more than that. Just having him play 10-15 yds then dump the recv off to the safety while he just chill in that zone is crazy to me. Make him earn his money. He should have enough pride to go to the def coordinator and demand to play man coverage. So that’s my spill. I’m not going to even get on the O-line…they just look slow and sloppy. We desperately need a change there.

iF YOU CAN’T BLOCK, TACKLE, CATCH OR RUN, YOU WILL NOT WIN VERY MANY FOOTBALL GAMES. IF YOUR DEFENSE CAN’T GET TO THE QB OR STOP THE RUN, YOU WILL NOT WIN
VERY MANY BALLGAMES.
I DON’T SEE THE FALCONS PROFICIENT AT ANY OF THESE QUALITIES.

I’ve watched them for forty five years and it has never changed. Maybe a little upside every so often
but that never lasts long. I don’t think the current players and coaches will ever do any different. The
more changes made the more they stay the same.

That was ugly, any way you cut it. Holes all over the place. Can’t cover (except for Grimes.) Can’t tackle (just hit.) Peterson looks done. Need another LB. Pressure, but can’t finish. Can’t run block. Backs can’t break away. DL is better than they looked last night against the run. Can’t get deep. When we do, Ryan can’t hit it. And that was just the first half. 11 days to prepare and Gregg Williams knew what was coming on every 3rd down play we ran. No imagination. Not enough options for MR2. Receivers looked tentative after every catch, waiting to get hit, while NO receivers just run away. Has Dunta Robinson earned a check yet? If the hit on Kelly wasn’t against “a defenseless receiver,” I’ve never seen one. Lofton’s hit was helmet to helmet, but only because the NO receiver lowered HIS head. The irony is that if GB shows up and wins against Detroit Sunday, the Falcons will be favored on the road at either Dallas or NYG, and Ryan should get his first playoff win. If it’s NO again, I haven’t seen anything to make me think round three will be any different. Hope I’m wrong. Again.

Welost to a better team. Better prepared, better coached, just better, as usual we looked lost. After two turn over by the defense the offense couldn’t yield anything. Both OC & DC not creative, HD got only one pass thrown his way when it didn’t matter, thought he would be a match up problem since last time we played them they had no answer for him. It will be painful to watch po as we get pasted again then as usually we have our same ol’ soft nice excuse from the coach, by the way we have no 1st round pick next year and half the roster will be free agents, so do will it a rebuilding year? A comment to Dr Warren. We could take the entire Saint team and trade the falcons to Sean Payton and Greg Williams. The outcome would have been the same, Saints would have beat Falcons bad.
When will people realize, this is not a personnel problem, but a coaching problem. Falcons coaches are not in the same league as Payton and Williams. Mr Blanks I know is a smart person. He has to see that falcons are still playing 1980 style football not twenty- first century football.Green Bay, Saints,New England and elite teams falcons has no chance. It is not the players. TD has done a good job of getting players. Now he needs to get some coaches. I would start first by trying to hire Saints assistance offense coach , or Green Bay OC.

If we falcons are satisfied playing .500-.600 pct football we stay as is. If our goal is to play and maybe win a superbowl, coach chance is a must. BVG had no answer for Brees and company, or did MM have a clue for Greg Williams. As Ryan would chance play Vilma would chance Saints defense, we were out coached by better coaches.
I will give one player a good job. Chris Owens. He has ran down Harvey and Sproles. I will say dude, you can run. I never would believe they could be caught.

The best football players on our team are Matt Ryan, Tony Gonzalez, Julio Jones, Michael Turner Jaquizz Rodgers and Roddy White on our offense. Our defense is good enough against the rest, but these guys from New Orleans are the best. The best for NO are Drew Brees, Marques Colston, Devery henderson, Darren Sproles, Jimmy Graham, and all their running backs. They have 4 running backs that really open up their offense even more which makes it almost impossible to stop with Brees at the helm. This is a Super Bowl team. If you don’t have a defensive line that can get a push you have zero chance against these guys. Love it this time of year when you know we have an extra game but unless Van Gorder can get them to play much better, we are probably done.

I don’t how many Falcon fans remember how sorry we were year end and year out not that long ago? You would think reading the comments that we have been playing every year in the Super Bowl? It is and always be about giving yourself a chance- we are in the playoffs- any thing and I mean any thing is possible- yes our OC stinks- Yes our DC stinks (every game they lose) I don’t care who our QB is- when a WR drops the ball it is a drop- last I looked Falcons are leading the NFL in drops- that is on our WR’s. DB’s had a chance for a fwe picks last night and dropped the ball as well. I wish the D would play man to man if your going to get beat anyway what are you losing out on? Look how KC beat GB they pressed the corners and brought the heat on Rodgers- Falcons had seom success when rushing the QB but then they stop and get picked apart playing a WEAK zone. But guys I will take these teams over the past 5 years- because the Falcons are now winning on a regular basis- no more winning season- losing season. Just so folks are aware packages are put in for plays that are called the OC or DC coord can’t help if the opposing team changes what they are doing once they have a package already in for a play.

Everyone is blaming the coaches, its not them. Start looking at your receivers (most drops in the NFL). You played against New Orleans, in a hostile environment which many teams have come in and flopped. Your defense stopped New Orleans several times in the 2nd half. Take away a couple of penalties and some drops, and you would have been more competitive.

The Falcons are a running team that should use the pass sparingly. Matt Ryan is good, but doesn’t throw the deep ball well. Use the run to setup the pass. Anytime you stop ATL from running, you make Matt Ryan beat you, but only if his receivers catch the ball.

Rubble, you half-wit. Can’t understand why a guy who has puncuation lapses, tense errors, misspellings etc. keeps a job as a JOURNALIST.
SeenThisB4, your take on the game (I knew you could do it) I am in agreement on. Falcons are the most schizophrenic team I have ever seen. If they end up going to the meadowlands in round 1, the oddsmakers will have a blast handicapping that one. Giants are a freaking rollercoaster as well.
Falcons can’t block worth a flip, and can’t pass rush. Those 2 facts = death in the NFL playoffs, no matter how many skill players you have, how many big plays you can fall into, how many wins you managed to pile up in the regular season. Throw in some penalties like last night and you will be beaten by even mediocre teams.
When a team is this up and down, I believe it’s execution more than coaching. the players are to blame, and it starts not with the QB or the high price flop free agents but mostly with the O-line and the D-front. Games are won and lost in the trenches. And, our secondary does not have the talent to play zone OR man. Toasted both ways.
Probably one and done. If the Falcons are out, please God let it be ANYBODY BUT THE SAINTS. I did not think they were “running up the score”, but I thought it was classless for Brees and his teammates to be posing for group photos WHILE THE GAME WAS STILL GOING ON. That was rubbing it in, and Mike Smith should have had a word with smarmy Sean Payton about it.

Last night’s game is eerily similar to the last game vs Green Bay. No matter what we did, we could not stop their offense. So the solution? Go out and draft defense. Oh wait, we traded most of our picks for a talented WR that fumbled away our chances of making the score respectable.

Pretty frustrating game, but NO is definitely as good if not better than GB right now.

Anyway, let’s hope we get lucky and don’t have to play them again in the playoffs Round 1. GO FALCONS!

Definitely not Smitty’s fault. This is greatest stretch of Falcons football regarding winning, playoff appearances, etc., in their history.

Doesn’t accout for Defense dropping relatively easy INTs that would have changed the momentum of the game. Doesn’t account for Julio’s fumble. Doesn’t account for blown coverage and missed sacks.

Folks can say he is no Sean Peyton . . .. well I’m not sure Sean Peyton would be Sean Peyton without Drew Brees. They make a great team and Brees is no doubt in a level all to his own with Brady and Rogers. The Falcons can be frustrating, but I believe they just still need a few more players. I like Ryan as most know, so unless we got Manning, Brady, Rogers, Brees . . ..maybe Big Ben, I’d stick with him. The O line, D line, and secondary is where I think they could improve. Great game by Saints, and particularly Drew Brees. Yes, one player can make a huge difference when that player is a GREAT QB.

Falcons are a good team. Just not an elite team. It’s nice to be in the playoffs considering so many bad years but the difference in Falcons and Saints in personell and coaching is night and day at this time. Whether it’s O-Line or our backs or both, what a difference in the run game last night. THeir backs hit the holes and were off to the races with cuts and amazing power. Turner has got to be the easiest big back to tackle without having a full head of steam. MAtt is a very good QB, but no HOF QB like Breeze. Our defense is pretty good against the run , but gets exposed against a great passer and good passing scheme. 3rd and 11, 3rd and 12? No matter to the Saints last night. Dunta Robinson is the worst overpaid corner EVER!! IMO.

As a life long Falcons fan, I’m SICK and TIRED of getting embarrassed by teams worst then us only to pass this organization and become elite teams and organizations. Matt Ryan is not the franchise QB that a lot of people apparently think he is. He is only slightly above average and will always be that way. The Falcons need to go for a more multi-dimensional QB.
(Robert Griffin III). The Falcons have reached their plateau with Ryan and should not expect to go much further. He is a good guy, but not one of the best QB’s.

The Falcon defense is not agressive enough to play with elite teams with great QB’s. Too much zone and not enough man on man to see who is really a player and who is not. BVG is ok for college defenses but in the NFL his defenses are not ranked too high.

Murlarkey’s offensive play-calling lacks a lot of everything.

I love Mike Smith but if he didn’t see this coming then he’s in big DENIAL. How could he no see this coming? We have a losing record against teams with winning records and we were playing a juggernaut in their home. We are a 2nd tier team, not up to the Saints, Pats, Packers, etc. I still maintain Julio Jones is a waste of picks, totally uneeded. Harry Douglas was fine, in fact, I think the offense plays better and more cohesively when Julio was out of action. The defense is a mess with a few exceptions, Grimes is awesome. Dunta is way overpaid and Ray Edwards is a bust. I like our linebackers but we need a pash rush, it is almost non existent. You win with defense, the Pats are an anomaly. We’ll lose in the 1st round since we will be playing a winning team. Smith, Dimitroff and I guess Arthur are in denial about what this team really is.

Going to be a short playoff run. Tired of all the trash talking from Roddy and the likes. Just shut up and play. If Roddy caught the ball as good as he talks he would be a world class receiver.

If I said it once, I have said it a hundred times “Matty Ice Cold” is a very average NFL quarterback at best in the NFL. He just can’t make reads and can’t make the throws needed to really be special in this league. When you watch Brady, Bree’s and Roger’s play it’s like daylight and dark. Yes they have other issues with the team but in the NFL you win with great defense and a premier quarterback and the Falcon’s are lacking in both areas. The Falcons made a poor decision in their selection at QB to lead the franchise and will have to settle for below average performance while the rest enjoy there super bowl rings. “YES” I’m a Falcon fan for life just telling it exactly as it is and the Saints will hammer us again and Smitty will still be winless in the playoffs but there’s always next year. 2011 Falcons = Just another mediocre team from this state that doesn’t have what it takes to win it all. They might get out of the first round if they get the Dallas/NY winner and get everyone’s hopes up.

The foreseeable future looks bleak in Atlanta. Falcons traded their future for Jones, Braves aren’t getting better, Hawks are still the Hawks, Georgia can’t hang with the big kids of the SEC, and Georgia Tech is content running a high school offense. I really like Smitty, but either he and/or the rest of the coaching staff is in deep denial about the pass defense. Even though Graham caught one over Grimes, Grimes was the only real pass defender we had back there. I’ll be glad when the DaCoupe experiment is over; the TD pass to 17 was his fault entirely. 21 should only play on special teams; he did run down Sproles. 25 did ok, but wish he could catch a ball, he evidently was in the right spots, unlike 28.

It was so bad Gruden was ridiculing the Falcons defensive scheme last night. Van Dumbass is always going to get reamed when he faces good offenses with good OC’s like Green Bay and NO. It’s pathetic. when we played the Texans due to no pass rush.
I am not willing to throw in the towel on the
defensive coordinator quite yet.

Smitty has some tough decisions to make. He may
be forced to consider changing his OC. There are
too many weapons for the woeful performances
against the better teams.

As for Ryan, if he has a bad game during the
playoffs, he most likely can’t handle the pressure
of being the leader responsible for taking the

Abraham and “Big Play” Ray Edwards should donate their check this week to charity. Pathetic perfomance rushing Brees. They both got manhandled. Up the middle, D line and LBs, same thing, write a check to the Blank Foundation. The worst run tackling of any Falcons squad I have seen in my 43 years as a season ticket holder. Look at the film…Lofton and Peterson playing catch tackle, nobody, I mean nobody, persuing the ball carrier. Just back on their heels playing catch tackle. O line got a C+ protecting Matt. Receivers, are too hot/cold. Its either a fantastic catch or a rookie drop in their hands. D Backs, same deal- some impressive plays 1/2 the time, pathetic coverage the other 1/2, that’s a 50%, which is an F at my son’s school. We are a very mediocre, inconsistant football team. Eat your words Sports Illustrated……..picked to win the Super Bowl……yea right! All I saw was an uninspired team who layed down for the Aints. No desire, no hustle. We’re soft, our offensive and defensive lines are below average. Abraham has 8.5 sacks for the year, and 3.5 came against Jax. He’s not getting it done. But to be fair, he doesn’t have much help Edwards doesn’t do much. A real disappointment. Linebackers are pretty good. Grimes is a great thlete, but he’s about Danny Devito’s height. Moore is physical. None of them have good hands. Our offensive line just as uninspiring. And we still aren’t real good throwing downfield as we could be. I think there’s some coaching issues. The defense is way out of position way too often. VanGorder’s a joke. He has to go.

Why has it been the Falcons destiny to be unprepared for a game? Van Brocklin said back in the day its hard to coach a dropped pass & missed tackles, etc. Vince Lombardi believed in simple things practiced over and over till you got them right and to perfection. At half time during a lousy first half performance, Lombardi came into the locker room and said “men this is a football!” Basics!!!

The bottom line is the Saints are not as good as the Falcons seem to always make them look. Pathetic performance by the Falcons. Very disappointing. You have to make the plays in the crunch and they just did not. I see an early playoff exit for the Falcons, and the Saints for that matter. Neither are really that good. What is puzzling about last night though is the Falcons really are not as bad as they played last night and the Saints are absolutely not that good.

How many times do we have to watch this pedestrian defensive line fail before they fix it.All our interior linemen and Ray Edwards are rotational guys..they can work in a rotation but are not great. We only pressure teams with horrid O lines. We need a STUD interior tackle to take on blocks and pressure the pocket from the middle. That alone will improve the rush from the ends. Dunta Robinson? FIRESALE! On the other side of the ball Turner is slow getting to the hole and the O line is not dominant enough to run the ball the way we need to for our system.A more stout O line would improve the running and that will improve the passing game. The first meeting showed the problem…you can”t get 4th and inches ( not to mention a deep handoff rather than a sneak was a bad idea by itself) you don’t deserve to win.

I was a true blue fan till they hired Dan Henning in the 80s and I grew disgusted and never followed them since. Even when they made the Super Bowl, then I only watched maybe 1 qtr and turned it off to watch Ed Sullivan reruns or something dumb like that. Who cares about the Falcons?

Losing this way to N.O. is a shock I suppose to Falcon fans and I did not watch more than 12 – 18 seconds, as my transmittor scanned the TV for something to view last night.

Why do folks get so upset with them? They will let you down time and time again. I love COLLEGE football anyway. Who needs the labor union NFL??

Last year’s 13-3 season was, unfortunately, an aberation, fueled by near flawless performances and an abnormally low number of injuries. With that said, the 48-21 shelacking by Green Bay and the 45-16 trip to the Saint’s woodshed in two big, meaningful games against elite teams is far more indicative of where this Falcons team stands. Matt Ryan is in the upper third if not the upper 25% of QB’s, but he is no better than Matt Shcaub whom we traded away and then used a #1 pick for Ryan. Sam Baker is a 1st round bust. We over rated Ray Edwards, failing to realize that he benefitted from playing amongst other greats on the Vikings D-line, and on a pay/performance scale Daunta Robinson’s contract is the worst value at CB in the league. Although Julio is great, we way over paid for him, mortgaging our future by trading away too many draft picks. We now have an elite receiver that we cannot get the ball to, because our O-line is mediocre and Ryan is a pocket passer and not the athlete that Brees is. Meanwhile Abraham and Turner are aging and slowing. Turner is a sad caricature of three yrs ago. It takes him a week to hit the rare hole that his O-line provides. Add it all up and you have to think that while Dimitrov is a better GM than McKay, he will never produce anything other than a middling team. Get used to 10-6 and out in the 1st round of the playoffs. Dimitrov does not have the acumen or savvy to trade his way out of this and the Julio Jones deal has us relagated to this level of performance for some time. In fact, given the aging Turner and Abraham it could actually get worse before it gets better. My bet is that we get embarrassed and exposed for what we are (a solid middle of the pack team) when we play the Saints in round one – they will kill us again.

Falcons are 2-5 against teams with a winning record. This team cannot compete against the better teams in the league. They will get humiliated again vs. the Saints in two weeks. Did you watch the game? Falcons were destroyed. Abraham and Edwards didn’t sniff a sack. How many times did Sproles or Thomas chip those overpaid losers to help keep them off Brees? The Saints O-line is the best in the league. The QB threw 2 picks and they still won by 29 pts. Parcells said you are what your record is. The score is the score. The Saints will be in Green Bay in late January, where they will run up and down the heated tundra, to set up Brees who will torch that overrated D on their way to ring #2 while Smitty is trying to figure out where he went wrong, again.

Last night’s game was an undeniable barometer of what and who the Falcons are. They are a reflection of Dimitroff and Smith. The players are not tough enough; the coaches not smart enough. Compared to the Saints –as well as a bunch of other playoff bound teams– the Falcons look big, slow and dumb. I hate to say it as I think that Mike Smith is a nice guy, but unless the Falcons can surprise us all and go two deep in the playoffs, it is past time for Smith and company to go. -“I didn’t see that coming,” Smith said.
(Coach, you were the only one to not see it)

-They were 8 for 8 on third downs and we had some very favorable down and distances. Third-and-8, third-and-10, third-and-12, third-and-13 and we weren’t able to get them off the field.
(Coach, this has been going on for the last 3 years. Our defense against equal or better teams has been horrible. Bad game plans and no adjustments! Why?)

- I hope it’s an aberration in terms of the way that we’ve been playing defense.
(Coach, again this has been the norm. Against inferior opponents the defense plays well. Against equal talent or better, they are DOMINATED)

I hope this talent and coaching staff are judged against equal or better talent and not against inferior opponents. This team has completely underachieved ALL YEAR against equal or superior opponents.

Why? IMO, bad coordinators, period. Way to predictable and no adjustments.

Not the no-call on the hit on Roddy vs the silly call on the Falcons for unnecessary roughness comparison, but the flag for holding, after which the white hat announces, “there is no foul for holding on the Saints because it was a screen pass”. WTF is that? Since when did the NFL definition of holding vary based on what type of pass play was executed? And this is an NFL white hat (referee)? On Monday Night Football? NFL MEMO TO FALCONS-SAINTS GAME OFFICIALS

All members of crew followed mandate pretty closely in regard to calls going in favor of Saints without being too transparent or obvious.

One major error which cost league public perception was nonsense call on penalty in end zone as no pass was ever thrown so officially should be ruled safety. Only fans familiar with rules realize how absurd official call was.

It did not look good to flag Falcons for clean tackle then not penalize Saints for flagrant spear in back on unprotected Falcon.

Way to look theother way as Saints held on long kick return and to protect Drew Brees.

Excellent non calls on Saints interfering with Falcon receivers. Nice touch of class on calling Falcon receiver for intereference. Some extra in pay envelopes for that one.

11:53 am

Saints are now 7-0 at home, 7-0 against the spread, and winning by an avg. of more than 21 pts. per game. How in the world did so many on this blog really think that they were going to lose back to back home games and give the division away? Like I said yesterday and all last week, there was no chance for that to happen. The Falcons are a pretty good team, but no better than that, and no threat whatsoever to the elite teams. Matt Ryan statistically threw for a lot of yards between the 20’s, but could only produce a single TD. Once the field became condenced, Ryan struggled. The Saints aren’t 29 pts better than the Falcons, but they are head and shoulders above them, and Payton/Brees have the Falcons number whether the games have been close or not. The larger reality is that it’s possible that this Falcons team has already hit it’s ceiling. The salary cap is strapped, and there is very little draft upcoming in April. Those factors will make it nearly impossible to add the type of players that it will take to close the gap on the elite teams. The Falcons clearly have not recovered from last year’s playoff debacle vs Green Bay, and it’s far from certain that this current regime ever will.

Read most of the comments but suprisingly very little concern about the one thing the Falcons need. The difference maker is the running attack or in this case the lack of one. The reason is not the coaches, QB Ryan, the receivers, the game plan, the blocking- just the lack of at least one good runner. More than one would put the Falcons deep in the playoffs but just one would make us respectable. For instance the Saints third string tailback lining up for the Falcons would have made this game close.

My take – When is the open tryouts for DL and OL positions, most games are won and lost there. Harvey Dahl(meanest, nastest OL guy we had), took no crap from anyone and caused Clabo to play the same way as he did somehow. We let him go to Rams as free-agent, Rams are terrible, go get him back and give OL back that mean, nasty fighting spirit!! Ray Edwards(free-agent) is just counting his money as he gets older, Bierman and Sidbury both can play better with more fire and hustle. Seems like every free-agent we sign just comes in counting his money and plays down to expectations. I don’t care if we have to cover with one defender on two WR’s, rush enough guys to put him(Brees) on his butt all day!! If you do not pressure the good QB’s, they will pick you apart. D must get after people and bust someone’s butt not play touch football. I’m very disappointed about last nite. As an old timer, there were some Falcon teams that would have taken last nite personally and scuffles and fights would have been all over the field. Last word – get Harvey Dahl back or his clone!!!

Keys to the game:

1. Did you notice the Saints have screen passes and the Falcons refuse to use them? They went for BIG YARDS and they keep the defense from blitzing too much.

2. Saints runners were plowing ahead looking for a first down, Michael Turner looks for somewhere to fall down. They know the secret that gets him on the ground QUICK. Just barely touch his feet or lower legs and he topples harmlessly to the ground.

3. No pass rush WHATSOVER. Brees thought he was playing a practice squad.

4. No chance WHATSOEVER in any playoff game no matter WHO they face. Matty “Choke” Ice can never quite make it to the end zone in the big games.

5. Did you notice when a Saints receiver caught a pass, the nearest Falcons was 10 yards away. When a Falcon caught a pass, a Saints defender or two was draped all over him.

6. The Saints had 10 guys in the box and Matty “Mr. Audible” Ice still keeps the running play to Michael “Stumble Foot” Turner. The result… three yard loss of course.

Conclusions:

Without SIGNIFICANT improvements to the secondary and front D-line, the Falcons are going NOWHERE. All three Saints runners are better than Turner. So, lets trade or release this guy and get a runner who gives extra effort instead of going down after one slight touch.

Did anyone hear coach Smith talk after the Carolina game? I almost fell asleep. The guy has NO FIRE, NO EMOTION. I’ve seen him get fired up on the sidelines, but where is the emotion in his pep talks?

Malarkey needs to go NOW! The ESPN announcers were all talking about some new plays being used because they had the extra days off. Nope, no new plays, same old crap, can’t score in the endzone.

Here’s the classic qoute of the year, ” I didn’t see that coming”. Next to last game of the year and you didn’t see it coming? We saw it coming. You struggle against botton dwellars(Carolina,Vikings) and you didn’t see it coming? If this was a “chess match” as we kept hearing, you’ve been checkmated over and over by Sean Peyton and you still haven’t learned.

The fact that you “didn’t see that coming” tells us all we need to know about your coaching ability.

The truth is that we have a quarterback in Matt Ryan that can’t throw a deep ball to save his life. Yes, the refs cheated a little, we had some crazy calls by the refs that could have results in a shoot out. The Falcons are in the New Orleans house, and you just can’t complain, you have to play the game. It look like in the 10 days the Atlanta Falcons had to prepare for the New Orleans Saint they did more shopping than studying game film of Drew Brees. Like I said in my blog before this game air on Monday night. Sean Peyton is a cruel man who will run up the score, if Mike Smith doesn’t understand that madness than something is wrong. If we don’t win against the Bucs we are have to play the Saints again, I don’t like that when you have a secondary who don’t believe in scoring when Drew Brees throws an interception. We will see, the Atlanta Falcons have two weeks to get there act together. GO FALCONS!!!!

Mike Smith; ‘it kinda got out of hand at the end’

No, it got out of hand before the half.

Mike Smith; ‘we didnt score touchdowns’

if you dont score touchdowns, how do you expect to compete in the playoffs? might as well not even play.

Mike Smith; ‘They had way too many long drives where they were moving the ball in chunks.’

D. Robinson plays way off the wr. he needs to bump, fight off or otherwise do what is needed to disrupt the wr, instead of letting him run his route to completion. That is somewhat a coaching problem.

Mike Smith; If you don’t get the pressure and affect Drew, he’s going to make the throws.’

Ole’ Abe is old, and it shows when playing the better teams in the nfl. Ray Edwards needs to stop pretending, and start his modeling gig early. Seriously Ray is only as good as the other side or the inside will let him be……What happen to Babs this season? And please trade or release P.Jerry.

Mike Smith ON IF THE SAINTS RAN UP THE SCORE AT THE END?

Did he offer an answer? I will. No, they didnt. They did what they were suppose to do to a rival. Beat them down so that they remember it next time.

Mike Smith; I hope it’s an aberration in terms of the way that we’ve been playing defense.

Aberration? Aberration? The Falcons are who we thought they were. A good team that plays down to the not-so-good teams, and horrid when its time to step up. Most of this falls on the coaching staff though.

Mike Smith; I didn’t see this coming. We didn’t play Atlanta Falcons football and the scoreboard indicates that.

I didnt see this coming…….that statement scares me for some reason. If a coach can see a loss coming, what does that say about his team? I feel that when we play the better teams we start off not playing “Atlanta Falcons” football. Its a fact that when we run the ball, our chances of winning is very high. And when we dont run, and try to match Brees or Rodgers throwing the ball, chances are we wont win. We got Turner, Snelling, and Rogers? Why the hell dont we run Turner more to the edges instead of up the middle all the time? Why dont we use Snelling more? he has proven himself. And why dont we use Rogers in the screen?

Mike Smith ON WHY THEY DIDN’T RUN MORE NO-HUDDLE:

I think Matt Ryan is a great manager on the field like Payton Manning, Matt just dont have the arm to match. Knowing such, why dont the staff (MM) have them using more of the screen plays, the skinny posts, the short post with Tony. Seems we only use those when we really need it like on third and short. If we are not going to adjust to Ryans abilities, we need to get another qb in here.

Mike Smith; Believe it or not, there’s going to be some positives that you’re going to be able to take out of this game.

To me there are times when you cannot walk away with any positives, UNLESS you think that game was an aberration like Smith did. Someone please point out a positive for the Falcons in that game…….

Mike Smith ON THE TEAM BEING TOO HAPPY ABOUT BEING IN THE PLAYOFFS

I dont think they were too happy, they’ve been there before. They just played to their capabilities, or better yet to the coaches capabilities.

Mike Smith FOLLOWUP ON IF THE SAINTS RAN UP THE SCORE TO GET BREES THE RECORD: It’s our job to go out there and stop them.

This is the only answer Smith offered that made any sense.

Overall I’m beginning to think at least most of our problems are with the coaching staff. The team has improved under Thomas and team, but it may be time to continue the process by improving the staff.

Wow, I didn’t see that coming either Mike. The Defense played HORRIBLE. 3rd and long how many times??? BLITZ damn it… Rushing 3 or 4 does not work against any NFL team, especially a team with a good QB… Offense was too predictable in the red zone. If the Falcon coaches don’t know how to fix this before we play the Saints again, they should be replaced… Better try something different next time… :(

Reality….the Falcons have second teir players at defensive end, second teir coaching and a second teir QB. No break threat at RB. Saints are far superior in every area.

If they play the Saints ten times, Saints win 9.

When is Matt Ryan going to become a true emotional leader of this offense, get in some people’s faces (ala Phillip Rivers?). Instead we lay down and play “good sport” to the SMUG AINTS once more.

The FALCONS need a heart transplant, a new backbone, new offensive and defensive scheme approach…can’t fix that now…hopefully in the future.

I agree with some of fans that the OC and DC is part of the problems. But I have had enough of this organization believing that Abraham is a top pass rusher, against weak teams he wreaks havoc, but verses team with winning records he disappears. He should have sold popcorn last night. Everyone pretty much said what a waste of millons of dollars that Dunta Robinson and Edwards is. Enough of slow methodical Turner, I have really had enough of him, Snelling runs so much harder than he does. I know the Oline is not perfect but big time runningbacks can make plays sometimes when the hole is not there. Please cut Turner loose and get a group of explosive backs(see the Saints,Packers,Steelers, etc)

With the terrible loss last night, I still believe this team has what it takes to win the big games too. We just need to grow up and realize that we can win big games. That starts with the coaching staff. We need bold plays called both on Offense and Defense. Take a chance with new strategies. I am so disappointed in how we played last night. That is embarrassing and I hope Aurthur Blank talks to the coaching staff and blesses them out for that performance. They deserve it… It’s time for some change…

Well now…last Monday night game of the season…you gotta know that a bunch of folks were watching cause no f’ball on Sunday and the f’ball purists were itching for a game…and what did they get…certainly not a football game!! What they really got was a good ole behind the barn butt kicking. The defensive coordinator (if you want to call him that) should be packing his bags to catch the first thing smokin’ (out of town of course); the one stat I have been grieving over since the start of the season: The birds are dead last in the entire NFL for stoping 3rd down plays of 10 or more yards…pitiful, pitiful…AND no signs of a pass rush…makes you want to puke! The linebackers are a 100% worthless…also got to be last in the NFL or close to last for QB hurries, knockdowns and sacks. I guess you get the point…the DC has had no clue all season of the talent he has and how to use the talent to stop opponents. I’ll save my best comments for the OC for another time…like later today…too emotional right now to give my 3 cents worth concerning the OC…yea, pack your bags too!!!

The Falcons have got to get a pass rush to compete against the elite quarterbacks. They obviously can’t get it with just the line. Did Ray Edwards play last night? Don’t recall hearing his name caleed even once. They need to have a lot of different blitz packages so that they can be well disguised. On almost all of those 3rd and longs, the Falcons rushed only three or four giving Brees time to make something happen. Leaving one more guy back in coverage didn’t do squat. Yes, Brees is elusive and accurate, but he is not tough. When he always knows exactly where the pressure is going to come from, it is too easy.

Brees
53/82 64%
629 Yards
6 TD’s
2 INT

Ryan
63/104 61%

You cannot blame Matt Ryan for this for sure. He has had a great season. He will break Jeff George’s single season passing record for the Falcons on Sunday. (4143 yards). His season:
90.7 Rating
4,071 yards
27 TD’s
12 INT.

He has had a great season although so many want to bash him. The line protecting him stinks, the running back is aged and cannot run like in the past, the defense has no rush, the DB’s can’t cover and the OC and DC need to go.

If Ryan was playing for Sean Peyton, he would probably be the MVP. Considering having an idiot for an OC consider this that Ryan is ranked for 2011:

8th in the league in rating
7th in the league in yardage
6th in the league in TDs

The Falcons have a QB and receivers that will grow (Jones), but they have a LOT of holes to fill to compete week in and week out. But QB isn’t one them.

Brees better play well Sunday or he will have the shortest lived record ever in the NFL. Brady is only 190 yards behind him.

What a Waste

December 27th, 2011
12:49 pm

It’s a darn shame the team wasted all of those draft picks to get Julio Jones. Wide receivers only touch the ball 10 times or less a game. They can’t win games, but they can sure lose them. That move was almost as stupid as when Ditka gave away the farm to draft Ricky Williams.

The Falcon defense is old and slow. They don’t have anyone that can get to the QB. Abraham is almost as old as Abraham, and just needs to retire. There isn’t a player on this defense that can make an open field tackle. They all play like they are afraid to put a hit on someone, wrap him up, and take him down.

You better hope that Dimitrov focuses on defense this draft. He also needs to get a running back and tight end. Michael Turner is old and slow, and can’t hit the open lanes anymore. Tony Gonzalez is probably going to retire in a season or two.

Good luck. If they get lucky in the draft and FA, they may be able to take the next step.

Let’s compare Brees in his 4th and 5th seasons as a Charger and Ryan’s 4th with the Falcons. And prior to anyone saying I am comparing them NOW, I am comparing them to the point of their careers. Brees became Brees with Peyton and the Saints, although good with San Diego. He is completing his 11th season and will be 33 January 15th. Ryan is 26. Maybe an innovative OC, (Josh Mcdaniel) could be what the Falcons needs, along with an OL and a Running back.

Brees was with the Chargers eight years ago, getting ready to be replaced by a draft pick named Phillip Rivers. Remember that?
In Brees 4th year in the league
65% completion rate 27 TD’s 7 INT 3,159 yards

Ryan’s 4th year in the league through 15 games
62% completion rate 27 TD’s 12 INT 4,069 yards

Even in Brees 5th year (Chargers) he had:
64% completion rate 24 TD 15 INT 3,576 yards. Not even close to what Ryan has in his 4th year.

We cannot afford to give good qb’s all day to throw the ball. Our defensive line is a joke, a bad one. with the money that has been spent there you would think that we would be much better. Bad drafts bad free agent pick ups, shame on us. Our evaluation of talent is very suspect. Abraham is the only legitimate player on the defensive line, and he is undersized. I think that TD is not as good as he thinks he is. We are not an elite team and are quite a few pieces short of being one, with little or no options left in the draft due to our panicing to get Julio.

The receivers (too bad they outlawed stickum)…the O-line…what O-line…they don’t exist. Why put in a 175 lb running back (to block) on an obvious passing down, expecting an obvious blitz…the result – holding call on the 175 lb back trying to stop a 240 lb linebacker…made good yardage on the play but called back. Penalties (not enough room here to comment…just sickening!). Can’t say any moore other than to say that the OC should open his eyes while looking at his play sheet…at least on first downs (hint: throw to Tony – you know, the hall of fame tight end); try a swing pass to J. Rogers or M. Turner; a bubble screen to either Roddy or one of the other wide receivers!! (you know?). I know for a fact that Tony G. is open on every play…EVERY PLAY… throw to him until he’s double-covered then do something else. The Falcons has to look at their defense. The defense put forth the effort, but did not come to play. All the Saints and Brees did was showed how vulnerable the Falcons defense is. When your defense put an offense in third and long, somebody has to step up and make a play. Whether it is the pass rush or the secondary. I am wondering do the Falcons have any playmaker on defense. Do they have a game changer? The offense has not played with consistency all season. There are playmaker and game changers on offense, but Ryan has to orchestrate the offense like Brees, Roders, Braddy, and P. Manning does with their offense. If you want to be talk about in the league as an elite team, you have to play like one. Right now the Falcons has some more growing to do.

Dr. Warren is correct. Brees on our side and we win. Ryan is a good quarterback but he’s not like Rogers and Brees. They almost always hit their receivers on the dead run. Ryan had actually been doing that a little better in recent weeks and was getting some short one taken to the house. However, last night he was causing receivers to reach for over thorwn balls leaving them open to some vicious hits.

I said the same thing on Schultz’s live blog last night. To me his face looked off somehow, maybe a bit swollen, almost like he’d recently had a facelift. And his eyes looked odd. I’m not a doctor, but I’d be a bit worried. I wonder if his undisclosed, non-heart health issue is manifesting in this way. I will say this again, Ryan with Sean Peyton, Super Bowl. Brees with Falcons, playoffs. You better get this through your heads, Sean Peyton is the reason for Brees and the Saints success. Our lame OC only understands the way the game was played 25 years ago.

Not even close to what Ryan has in his 4th year.

duronimo…Ryan was mostly on target last night. Every NFL quarterback has a few throws each game that aren’t exactly on target. And as I recall, on the Lofton penalty, Brees made one or two such throws as well.

The best call of the night. Official: There is no holding call because they were going to throw a screen pass and the lineman was shucking the defender.” WHAT? Brees ran for 9 yards. This morning on ESPN they were mentioning the officiating and the blunders to include the NON call on the spearing on Kelly, the NON Call for offsides on the defense, the Should have been safety above. Not using excuses, but they did change the complection of the game at the beginning. They should be called into the league office and be asked to explain the holding call. So now the refs anticipate what play is being run? Boy, let’s start calling every play we run a screen so we can hold.

Ryan’s arm is fine. Can he launch it 80 yards? No. Can he launch it 60 yards? Yes. Can he launch it accurately 60 yards, without a ton of loft, not very often. Can he throw a 25-30 yard accurate dart over the middle, yes, if he can step into it (doesn’t happen often with this O-line). His arm is good enough to win in this league, easily. He couldn’t pass for about 4,300 yards (his pace), even in this pass happy league, if his arm was in any way suspect. I also think he is pretty smart and can read things pretty well. Where I think his largest deficiency lies is in his pocket presence/escapability. In short, they aren’t very good. Late in the game last night in the red zone, the Saints brought a blitz from the right side and two defenders literally had a free shot at Ryan on that same side (I’m really not sure how that happens except by design, like a screen pass). Brees, Rodgers, Big Ben at that point would employ a martial arts move and use the defenders’ aggressiveness to advantage…make a quick move to the left or up in the pocket and have the defenders run by you…then you have another second or two to find a receiver (and additionally two of their defenders are out of the play chasing you). It seems to me that Matt’s first thought or instinct is not to use the defenders’ aggressiveness to his advantage, it is “oh shyt, here they come, I gotta get outta here…or I gotta get this ball outa here.”

Ryan-keeper (bashers need to acknowledge his value to the equation)

Turner-keeper (don’t unbderstand the bashers, we don’t need a long threat, Turner gets extra yards typically if the hole is there. Last night our O Line didn’t open the holes as they have in other games)

Gonzales-keeper (good as gold)

O-Line: Help wanted ad
D-Line: Help wanted ad
D Backs: Help wanted ad
WRs: hand transplants for all

Coaches: Light some guys up, call them out, tell them to play football or retire on their 10 acre farm and dreamhouse next year to wonder what could have been.

Look, in the NFL any player is an exceptional talet just to be on the roster. What seperates the NFL players froom the greats and the great teams is heart, determination, fire, guts, teamwork, playcalling, and making big plays.

This team lacks lacks these things at the current time.

I suspect we will pull one out against Tampa Bay in the 4th quarter, and gat hammered in the Wild Card game.

It’s going to be a long Spring and Summer in Falcon Nation.

ijonathan You are probably right. I was at a party and got to see the second half. About the time I came in the room, I saw a couple of throws that led his receivers into some vicious hits. It’s probably correct as well that if Ryan was playing in NO’s offense he might be putting up Brees like numbers.

One reason that Brees looks so much better than Ryan is that Brees has more experience. Another is that he gets protection from his line. The Falcons O and D lines are barely decent. The Saints lines are great. Switch the QB’s and the Saints still win. The margin is not as wide but they still win.

Said it before and I’ll say it again. Matty is an above average quarterback and that’s it. Falcons can win a super bowl with him but will never win a super bowl because of him. When the birds start scoring 30+ pts a game, maybe I’ll change my mind. Oh yeah, we’ve got good players on defense but the schemes are rudimentary. This is the absolute first time I have ever posted my thoughts on this blog, but I felt that it was necessary after last night and, specifically, after reading the comments of others on this thread. First thing ….. oh how I love those ‘Falcons Fans.’ All these ‘I’ve been a Falcons fan since [insert number here] …’, if you remember all of those years, you should think before you begin to talk about how bad we supposedly are now. We are 10-6 and going to the playoffs even though we are a 5th or 6th seed. Going to the playoffs for the second year (third time in four years). And now I’m reading about our disappointment on not being an ‘elite team.’ C’mon Man !!! NO is one of the few teams to come out of nowhere to grab the pot of gold. And I’m pretty sure that everyone can see why (Sean Payton and Drew Brees).

Then I hear you ridiculing our defense that allowed Brees and the Saints to rack up 307yds. passing and 4 TDs (3 INTs). You mean the same team that torched Green Bay (Super Bowl Champions) for 419 yds. and 3 TDs. The Chicago Bears and their vaulted defense for 270 and 3 TDs. The Texans and their supposedly stout defense for 370yds. and 3 TDs. The Giants for 363yds. and 4TDs. All I’m saying is that Brees is a superstar in this league and he’s going to get his points and his stats. But even though we were supposedly ‘embarrassed’ last night, we still played him at least as good as the other super powers in the NFL (322yds. and 2 TDs in our first game). Am I frustrated by our DC and the play of some of our players ??? Yes. But do I see progress in their play ??? He#@ Yes !!! I would have Abraham, Witherspoon, Lofton, Bierman, and Grimes on my defense any day. Do we need more pieces ……. Yes.

Now ….. about our offense, we have players on our team that other teams would covet. Ryan is an incredible QB and has the potential to be just as dangerous as a Brees, Brandy, or Rogers. And with weapons like Turner, White, Gonzalez, Jones, Douglas, etc., we could be a very dangerous team. Which brings me to our other problem ….. the OC. I completely understand why we’re doing what we’re doing. Controlling the clock and giving the ’super’ teams no time to run their fastbreak offenses. I hear that we haven’t beaten any good teams. For some reason memories are extremely short. NO, GB, and BAL last year using the gameplan (ball control and winning the time of possession). But we have got to learn to go toe-to-toe with these teams when we have to. On a number of occasions, we have broken out the no huddle and rolled down the field. But for some reason, we stop. That needs to change. Do I want to be like GB and NO ??? No. We don’t have the defense to play that game. And as you can see (NO vs. Seattle in the playoffs last year), there can be a time when that gameplan can blow up in your face.

So I see a very good team that continuously gets disrespected by announcers, ESPN, and especially in their own back yard by their ‘fair weather’ fans. I’m pretty sure that some other towns (Buffalo, Jacksonville, Carolina, Tampa, Indy, etc.) would LOVE to be in our position now. We FINALLY has an owner that cares more about just being an owner in the league and wants to try to build a winner. We have a GM that wants to take chances in the draft to make the team better. We’ve got a coach that demands professionalism on and off the field. Now …… do agree that we are missing something extremely important ….. a mean streak. I agree w/ reggie ……. WAY TOO SOFT.

Oh yeah …….. and If you can honestly say that last night’s game wasn’t poorly officiated, then you all are dreaming. Sparks hit the nail on the head w/ the NBA ref comment. It’s hard enough to play against the Saints without playing against the refs too.

The Falcons aren’t there, but they are a alot closer than they were in the mid 70’s, mid 80’s, ……. He@# ……. than a few years ago !!! But I’d rather be there than where the Saints were in the Aints days. And even then they showed more loyalty than the fair weather fans on this thread. Have you noticed that the hot teams in the NFL today have fans that stick with them through thick and thin (NO, GB, NE, PITT). If you’re so dissatisfied with their showing …….. NO is six hours southwest of us. GB, NE, and PITT are longer drives. Jump on their bandwagons.

Tell it like it is.

Could Tom Brady, Drew Bres, Aaron Rogers or Phillip Rivers under center in Atlanta make a difference in a couple of wins that we lost? Answer that question and you will assess the value of Matt Ryan. Things we know:

Tuck the ball in Turner’s gut 20-25 times, with a mix of Rogers and Snelling, we win 9 of 10 games.

We need a kicker that can boot the ball out of the endzone, and better pieces on coverage.

We will never beat high octane offensive teams with this offense. We’re a running team first, to open the pass.

WR do a better job of yards after the catch when they run deeper routes.

Defenses have better success against the pass when they play “through” the whistle, not to the whistle. Even if we get flagged on the play, you MUST put the QB on his tail.

At least Tebow knows how to get it done in the endzone.

The NFL needs to take a close, hard look at the officiating in this game. There may be some criminal activity behind the the calls, or lack thereof. How else do you explain the personal foul against Atlanta for hitting a defenseless player (note player saw the defender coming), and then not call the hit in the back on Peele when he was actually injured on the play?
Heck, if it’s called one way, it needs to be called the other way too. Otherwise, the likely result will be outcries of unfair officiating. This calls the integrity of the game into question.

The Defenses Line inconsistency in getting to the opposing QB and to many penalties calls against them .What the Falcons organization should do after this 2011 team finish it season in disgrace is strap the entire Defense and Offensives line and start over .As for Mat Ryan when the Falcons get there drafts picks back in 2013/14 the first players i would pick would be a Defensive Back and or QB .

Ryan is a good stat-stuffer. Most any QB in the league will have comfortable numbers if your repetoire is filled with passes under 20 yards. Not trying to dump on Matt, because it’s not all on him. We can win a championship with him, but not because of him.

I like Smitty, but every game is not about Xs and Os. He needs to do a better job coaching his coaches. If the coordinators have reached their ceiling, maybe its time for them to move on.

Scoring at will. That’s the name of the game against the Saints, period. If the roles were reversed and the Saints had a 4th and 3, or a forth down where they were in the red zone and it meant getting a touch down as opposed to a field goal, their coaches would have gone for it. That is the one thing that Smitty doesn’t get. They play a better game against the Saints at the dome, because they showed they could match up, even though they lost. In the dome, Atlanta was more aggressive with their play calling and overall play. When playing the Saints, you cannot leave nothing to chance. Basically, you have to throw you play book out of the window. Brees = Intangables. Although I don’t buy into the theory that the Falcons anticipate being the seed that will again play the Saints in the playoffs in a couple of weeks, after watching this game-I feel as though the Falcons were not giving their all out-all in last nights performance. Players are to blame as well, because the coaches can’t be on the field to make plays. That being said, I think this Falcon team will recover. I do think that they should rest their starters for next week and go with Redman for the game. Why risk anymore injuries for the playoffs? As for the playoff scenerio-we’ll see what happens. In the NFL, it’s all about matchups. I really hope we don’t play N.O. period. They are clearly the better team than Atlanta. I conceded that. But N.O. doesn’t get up for any other team like they do-Atlanta. They can be knocked off in the playoffs by any team other than Atlanta.

I wouldn’t count the Packers win at the beginning of last season because no one expected them to be as good. They came together as a team last year. I really think a lot of TD’s would have been made and more passes if Matty would do as most QB’s do and look the Safties off before passing the ball. He completely stare his receiver down the entire time and he continues to throw the ball too late. The ball should be there as soon as the receiver turns around.

Of all the crapola that CGD has spewed today, I kind of agree with his/her statement on Matt Ryan. Matt being a FG maker vs a playmaker/touchdown maker. Yeah, Matt has a few combacks, but I need to see it consistently against top tier teams.

For what it’s worth, Matt reminds me a lot of Tom Brady’s early years. The Pats D was good enough to keep them in the game, and Brady was good enough to get them in FG range to win the game. Somewhere down the line, Brady started to ge TDs to win the game, or to put the game out of reach. jmo

RUNNING GAME: Our running game was doomed when Ovie took a hit to his knee. Micheal Turner still isn’t well because he has a groin injury. There you have it. N.O. offensive line outweighs the whole Atlanta defensive line. If Atlanta cannot come up with the right formula for this equation, then we will not become successful at beating N.O. or any other above 500 team that we’ll face in the playoffs.

Look at Alex Smith with niner’s no good. New coach and he looks like a good QB.When you have a Head coach or OC that knows what they are doing, the players will look good. This is the case with Ryan. With the NFC South and home field advantage for the first round of the playoffs still at stake, the Falcons came in to this game with plenty to play for. That’s true even when you consider that they had locked up a playoff spot by Monday morning

What followed, of course, was a display that was equal parts offensive malarkey, defensive ineptitude and some of the worst officiating you’ll ever see. The Saints did their part by playing a smooth, quality game in all three phases, and the Falcons were more or less done in the third quarter. They still fought, bless their hearts, but ultimately the giant lead the Saints opened up in the third doomed our beloved birds.

Good recap from falcoholic.com

Ryan is a good stat-stuffer. Most any QB in the league will have comfortable numbers if your repetoire is filled with passes under 20 yards. Not trying to dump on Matt, because it’s not all on him. We can win a championship with him, but not because of him.

=====

Of the top 30 running backs in the league in terms of total yards, Turner is a whopping 25th in YPC. And his trend of late is brutal. I truly believe the guy is done, unless it is his groin holding him back.

And regarding the ease of piling up stats mainly with throws of less than 20 yards, AdvancedNFLstats.com tells the tale. So far this year, Ryan is mediocre on their “deep %” (percentage of pass attempts of 15 yards or greater. Ryan is ranked 20th, similar in percentage (20.6%) to Schaub, Sanchez, Skelton and Flacco. Do you know who is even further down, way down, that ranking at 35th? Drew Brees, with Matt Stafford and Kevin Kolb (around 17%).

I watch Brady every week as I’m a Pats fan from youth. Yes, he does have a great arm and has proven he can consistently throw it deep. But he often dumps it off 10 yards or less to Welker, Gronkowski, Hernandez . ..and many times those guys break longer plays. It’s scary to watch. Obviously, Pats (Brady) are better at getting the TDs than Falcs (Ryan). That definitely has to get fixed.

I live in SE Florida now, and I’ve said it before and will say it again . . …the fans down here . . .a vast majority wish the Dolphins had selected Ryan. I know he has many Falcon fan detractors, but down in Dade/Broward/Palm Beach counties – Sports radio hosts and callers say that was a major blunder as they need a QB and they really like what they see in Ryan. Now, Jake Long is an All Pro and they really like him . . ..but they now look at that draft as a missed opportunity to get a very good QB.

ORR…Of course I recall that argument :-) I was just engaging in some playfull blog banter with the master of the 3 yard blog dumpoff, CGD, who was with a wave of his hand, dismissing the entire drafting/signing strategy of the Falcons by saying they should concentrate on the lines. While I agree with that sentiment to some extent, Glenn Dorsey vs. Ryan is a perfect example of when you shouldn’t follow that approach. And, oh, TD did try to address the line that year as well, problem was, he selected alligator arms.

Good point SavDawg. Both the offensive and defensive approaches reek of HC Mike Smith’s inate conservatism. Field goals instead of trying to force touchdowns. Sticking with a (to me) obviously washed up Turner. Not letting the offense go no huddle most of the time. Playing a soft zone defense. Not bringing the house when it is obvious Brees is going to pick you apart anyway, etc. Change the overall philosophy, and maybe you start changing outcomes in the big games.

The Falcs need to take the next step… and it is now questionable whether Coach Smith is the man to lead the Birds into that step and then beyond.

Buffy, go ahead and take a poll about whether Turner is still the “Burner” and takes advantage of what is available, like he used to. Oh, and the Falcons are 4-1 when Turner runs for 100 yds this year, not “100%”. And if he’s only done it 5 times in 15 games, it starts to become a meaningless stat.

Fellow Dirty Bird fans…This is my first post after reading your comments the past few years and being in total agreement with the vast majority certainly. I wanted to speak up here after having our City embarrased again Worldwide last night (MNF is Global)…

The past 4 decades have been painful to the true Fans for sure, but, our beloved teams always took it to the Saints atleast win or lose (mostly won it before this SOFT regime strolled in)

The fact is our current Falcons have some talent where it counts but have NO heart, professional pride, leadership, effective schemes, nor most of all accountability to the City of Atlanta! The other NFL teams most of you consider elite are polar opposite in every aforementioned catagory than todays Falcons especailly being accountable to thier Fans FIRST.

The Atlanta fans need to Rise-Up and demand more from the team by allowing our actions to say “enough with this”. Money along with your voices is power and this team has not earned our hard earned dollars in my humble view! Would you pay an employee that is good 50% of the time and barely earns their statistical bonus year over year just to take more from your pot to feather thier own nest at home while saying to hell with the Company… Likely not, so why then should we pay for mediocrity from our beloved Franchise when the Leaders clearly failing regardless of barely making positive stats (ask the players their true thoughts when you see them out in our City). We have one of the most orginized Fan bases I have seen in the NFL (CNN is in our own house). We should demand CHANGE NOW on every Radio Station, TV, Billboard, Sponsorship across the City and at the Dome(Boycott and/or Black it out until they CHANGE) OR suffer quietly the next 10 years and allow the next generation to Stand-Up for the City of Atlanta… It’s up to us to make a statement like the “so called” elites fans do every year. We should BOOOOO Smith and his staff off the field everytime you see them and see what happens from there… A. Blank loves Money make no mistake about it…Pride for the city first will be an after thought until we Stand-Up collectively and take back our team(look back at the sAints Rise and see where it actually started)

Remember we were here before any of this SOFT regime strolled into our City for thier 15 mins. of Falcon fame, looking only to go elsewhere and Win whatever it takes;and we will be here when their are ALL gone to start over with the broken pieces AGAIN! Some will say that we are not grateful and look at the other losers in the NFL, but, 45 Years is enough time with nothing to show for it (Goose Eggs 0 for 45 and counting in SBs is all that matters in the NFL) plus GB would never compare themselves to the Cleveland Browns or any other team in the bottom 60%, why should we proud Atlanta fans do so and be thankful for the crumbs from Blanks table. IN MY VIEW A. BLANK NEEDS TO IMPLEMENT SOLUTIONS NOW WHATEVER IT TAKES LIKE ANY OTHER BUSINESS HE HAS RUN…OR MOVE ON TO HIS NEXT PROJECT…

WIN OR GO HOME STARTS WITH THE FANS STANDING-UP A MAKING OUR IMPRESSION FELT EVERYDAY…

Rosenberg had a fast start in journalism. As a student at the University of Alabama, he persuaded then-head coach Ray Perkins to let him join the Crimson Tide football team as a running back. He wrote a column about his experiences and parlayed the “Paper Tider” series into a sports writing job with the Atlanta newspaper. AKA George Plimpton.

Rosenberg covered Georgia Tech for a couple of years and won the Braves beat just after the team began dominating the National League. For the past two years, he has been the paper’s national baseball writer, working on the side for Sports Illustrated and in local TV and radio.

Rosenberg’s lack of direct experience made him an unusual hire.

Beofe last night’s game we had not beatena team with serious playoff credentials. It showed. When New Orleans but pressure on the Falcons, they did not respnd in a positive way. I am concerned about the play calling nad the way the defense can cover my to man. I also have concerns that even though we are throwing down field, we do not put the fear of God in any opposing defenses. We will ever be a 8-8 or 10-6 team that may or may not make the playoffs and them make no noise. I am not saying get rid of Matt Ryan or Mike Smith, but it may be time to change our approach and open up the offense and defense..

The Saints still continuing to score in the 4th quarter “is” the difference between contenders and pretenders. If the Falcons had the lead on the Saints, they would have tried to run out the clock the entire 4th quarter by running the ball and just trying to get first downs. They would have had “No Interest” in getting in the end zone. This is the problem with this team. They play to win the game, not beat the other team. No killer instinct at all. If you get a lead on the Falcons, they’re toast. They only go after the end zone when backed into a corner (when it’s too late). Mr Dimitroff and Mr Blank should see this clearly.

The cameras must have shown Mike Smith 30 times last night, and not 1 single time did you see him talking to anyone – coach or player, or speaking into his headset. This guy just stands emotionless on the sidelines the entire game. What kind of coaching is this? He has a defense that can’t tackle, no pass rush, poor coverage on special teams, no chance ever of blocking a punt or a kick. Just a bung of guys playing uninspired ball with poor play calling.

Between Saints players mockingly fake peeing on Atlanta’s field after game last year, Joe Horn wannabes pulling stuff out of their pants (selfishly costing own team a penalty) to get personal attention in a team game. These Saints have become the most classless organization in football.
Too bad Falcons didn’t give the Saints offense the ball on their 20 yard line instead of 33 last drive.
At least that would have prevented enough yards for record. Of course running up score to get it instead of next week, was also classless.

If the offensive line opened up a big hole for Mike Turner to run through, it will take Turner 3 weeks just to get to the hole and another day and a half to go through it. How Pathetic.

Calling the Saints classless and the running up the score accusation I believe is coming from a wounded fan base,Did not you pitiful team come back from a 24=7 deficit against the Panthers and win the game? Should take our foot off the gas pedal because you dont like the speed? I say hell no.
If you don’t want the other team to score points then stop them!. If you don;t want passing records broken against you stop them!. The late Walter Payton broke the NFL all time rushing title against the Saints in the 80’s, if the Saints didn’t want him to broke the record on them they should have stopped him in the trenches. Now lets admit something here Falcon fans, had the score been 45-16 Falcons would you be calling yourselves classless, running up the score, or blaming the refs, I don’t think so, some of you would be rubbing in the face of any New Olreans fan you cab found on this blog.We will enjoy this win and enjoy that we did3 things last night, won the division, broke the single season passing record and spanked you all in one night on national tv, and we will make no aplogy for that.

I can care less about the accusations about running up the score. This IS the NFL. It IS a defense’s responsibility to stop the opposing teams offense. And I’m actually one of the few Falcons supporters who believes our woeful defense actually did a decent job against your team (compared to other teams I have seen play them this year). And we had to play you TWICE !!! But I am going to continuously say that some of your players (particularly defensive players) are confusing aggressive play with ‘thuggish’ play and you are getting away with it every weekend. I give all of the credit to your quarterback and your coach for getting you where you are today. And I really would like to see where you would be if you didn’t have either one.

HORRIBLE FACT #1: Falcons are not very good. No signature wins. 1-5 vs. teams with winning records. And Seattle and Philadelphia would clean our clocks now.

HORRIBLE FACT #2: Falcons 6-1 when Turner runs 20 times. Falcons 1-5 when Ryan throws 40 or more passes. We have a dufus for an offensive coordinator who is desperately trying to make Ryan into Manning for his personal resume. Thanks to Blank, Dimitroff and Smith for allowing this nonsense to happen.

IF YOU ARE GOING TO CHANGE THE PHILOSOPHY OF THE TEAM, DO IT IN OTAs! Not in a shortened year. Unless Falcons return to the run-first philosophy for the playoffs, it’s one and done by halftime. With this group you have to control the clock — not throw 50 times.

A lot of same ole news on these posts, heck, we lost the dam game but still in playoffs, who is to say Atlanta can’t recover from this and get em next time, after all, we all know that we probably got two shots at it in New Orleans and can’t rule out beating them in the Post Season. Better to have lost this one than won this one and lost in the playoffs so consider that before you give up on your own team.

The playoff game is the one that matters the most and not this stupid seasonal game that was played last night so get over it and lets move on to the next one with Tampa Bay.

I’m from New Orleans! Let me say just one thing. I’m always worried when we play the Falcons. I didn’t even feel comfortable last night until late in the fourth quarter! I have a respect for Atlanta that’s healthy! Ryan’s a good quarterback and will be great one day! Difference in the game last night was the “12th man on the field” willing the Saints to victory! When we got Payton and Brees after Katrina we got lucky! The Saints (and especially “Cool Brees”) are a class act on and off the field! HANG IN THERE Falcon fans, remember just a few years ago we were the Aints with the “head baggies”! You have some great players and will see victory!!! In addition, running up the score was stupid. What if Brees had ripped up a knee on a sack on that last drive? Stupid coaching. You would think the head coach was on drugs or something.

All kidding aside, if that had happened, Peyton would have been crucified.

Our defense was very predictable. Four in the box and the linebackers playing way back. No guesswork by NO on who to block. The Saints would put seven in the box and you had to guess which 3, 5, or 7 they were going to rush. Give Brees a predictable defense and he is licking his chops.

Actually, if it had happened, all of these Saints fans would have pointed the finger at the Falcons. The game was over, why were you guys playing so hard? You didn’t need to sack him. That was a dirty play. You were just mad because we were winning. You did it on purpose because we are going to play you in the playoffs, etc., etc.

If Brees had blown out a knee, you absolutely would have heard that. 100% positive.

And who on the Falcons is going to put their TEAM’S playoff run at risk and get themselves injured when the game is clearly over? So you ran up the score on a team which had every legitimate motivation not to play 100% at that point. That really makes the record special. Plus the 325 yards and 5 tds against the Colts. That makes it special too.

I see the pro bowl rosters are out. Wait a minute, where’s Michael Turner? Isn’t it true that the Falcons have no shot at winning unless he does X or Y? Don’t you need to feed the burner carries by the dozen for the falcons to win? Isn’t he one of the top runners in the league? No?

Hmmm…

Turner. Scares. Nobody. Teams would be begging the Falcons, with this offiensive line, to hand the ball off to Turner 30 times a game.

The media is insulting the Falcons….we (the Saints) didn’t run up the score…whoever heard of that in the NFL? How about stopping the Saints??? That’s what happens in the NFL. And it’s no secret that on the last drive the calls from Coach Payton were helping Brees get to the record, but, come on…this is a game. It’s on national TV, the Saints knew they were going to win..how about putting the icing on the cake and breaking that NFL record….for all of those fans in the Dome? Did anybody notice that NOBODY left the game? They wanted to see that record and I think they were entitled to see it…it’s history in the NFL…and everyone on national television was given the treat of seeing it happen, as well, to noone more deserving than Drew Brees. If the tables were turned, I can truly say that if the Falcons were playing at home, their quarterback was THAT close to breaking the record, and the game was in no way in jeopardy…I’d think the Falcons coach would be an idiot to not go for that record. I’m glad Payton did…it was the right thing to do, and I’ll never forget watching it live (with my Brees jersey on, no less). WHO DAT!!

This team makes the playoffs only to get completely stomped the first playoff game they play (which is what is going to happen). This team did not improve in the areas they needed to improve and management traded the future for Julio Jones…one player. One player does not a Super Bowl team make. This Falcons team needs improvement in secondary, offensive line, and defensive line. Also they need another power running back to compliment Turner. Also at the end of the season both the offensive and defensive coordinators need to be gone. The offense and defense were both MIA yesterday.

@michael m; it took that long because your defense stepped up in the 3rd quarter and a big part of the 4th. I read only the first few posts so I may be duplicating some. I think our guys played as hard as they could but made some mistakes. We have MS as head coach. He has brought us respectability but is a 9-8 or 10-7 coach. The totals of 17 games is to show the play off loss we get when we play top calibre teams. Matt Ryan is a good QB but we are so out classed by Brees and Sean Payton. Their offensive schmes a superior to ours and MS is probably the cause. He either holds MM back or should have seen the problem before now. Trying to beat teams like GB and NO with the old school Def. Coordinator as MS was and being in charge of our offense will not work. We are good enough to beat most mediocre teams. We play about ten each year. MS has taken us as far as we can go. We have the talent but not the coaching. I hate to say this because I think MS, MM & BVG are nice guys. BVG’s 4 man rush didn’t help either. Now it’s up to Arthur. Find us a Sean Peyton

The Falcons were in the game until nearly midway through the 4th quarter inspite of penalties and not getting TD’S but FG”S, allowing a kickoff for a TD and Jones’ fumble. Without the mistakes it was an even up game. The wheels came off after the kickoff return and/or the fumble by Jones but it was still a winnable game in the 4th even with all the mistakes and that is encoraging on one hand while very concerning on the other. The team needs more pass rush and less mistakes and they can compete with the Saints but they MUST sack, not just rush Rogers or there is no chance. Edwards and Abraham MUST be OUTSTANDING and the middle needs to pick it up! Smart well-executed blitzes also MUST be in the game plan!

This season, Ryan has thrown for 4,065 yards, which trails QB Jeff George’s club record of 4,143 yards, set in 1995, by just 78 yards. Did anybody hear the commentator make the statement, ‘the saints running backs run like it will be the last time they get the chance’? To win a ballgame you gotta play with fire in the gut. The birds didn’t have any. Not even a spark.

I can’t fault Julio for the fumble trying to get more yards. What time he’s played he’s had a pretty good result. He can only get better.

Matt has to work his tail off and not listen or read the print about how good he is. He has to work on the long ball all summer. With the recievers he’ll be pitching to. The defensive backs, excluding Grimes, who’s worth keeping? Money be damned, Robinson has to go. He’s taking up room somebody else needs.

But you can forget the draft for next year. Don’t have any picks. But I would trade Blank for Trent Ala and Rambo from UGA.

Somethings got to give.

One more thing. Why not keep this deal on football and the personal digging some of you are so into. Do you lack football knowledge?
