Falcons earn second straight NFL playoff berth

With Green Bay’s 35-21 victory over Chicago, the Falcons clinched a playoff berth for the third time over the past four seasons on Sunday night.
The Falcons (9-5) play the New Orleans Saints (11-5) at 8:30 p.m. Monday night at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome.
The playoff berth marks the first time in franchise history that the team has made the playoffs in consecutive seasons.
In addition to Chicago’s loss, the Falcons needed losses from Dallas and Arizona. Philadelphia beat Dallas and Cincinnati beat Arizona on Saturday.
The Falcons can win the NFC South title and earn the No. 3 seed with victories over New Orleans and Tampa Bay coupled with a loss by the Saints to Carolina.
The Falcons would host a home game if they can land the No. 3 seed.
“This is exactly where we wanted to be, in the mix in December with everything we want still in front of us with two games to play,” said quarterback Matt Ryan when asked about the playoffs on Thursday.
In 2008, the Falcons were eliminated by the Arizona Cardinals in the wild-card round. Last season, the Falcons were the No. 1 seed but were upset at home by Green Bay in the divisional round. Arizona and Green Bay went on to represent the NFC in the Super Bowl.
The Falcons are one of the league’s hottest teams. They have won seven of their last night games and could go into the playoffs with a lot of momentum if they can defeat New Orleans and Tampa Bay.
“You want to be playing your best ball in December,” Falcons coach Mike Smith said recently. “One of the things that we talk about as an organization and a football team, we want to be relevant in December. To be relevant, you have to be playing good football. . . It becomes very important that you win games going down the stretch.”

NOW IF DUNTA ROBINSON will break a leg, or get the flu they might beat NO. How can a guy like Robinson play corner in the NFL? This guy could not cover a high school receiver! Watch old #23 get burned Monday night. When he does not get burned, he spends the rest of the game chasing a guy he let get open! They need help bad at the CB position, at least they get Grimes back. Pretty impressed with the way Smitty and the staff have been able to change the culture around here. Nice job. Now, as far as the playoffs go, I know that there are a ton of different possibilities seeding-wise but the most liking appears to be vs Cowboys/Giants winner. A 6 seed vs SF wouldn’t bother me either.

Hopefully the fact that a playoff spot is already clinched will enable the Falcons to play loose and ease the nervous tension that sometimes seems to cause mistakes for them in big games. Obviously there’s still a lot to play for (namely the division title and seeding) for both teams, and despite all the trash talk from either fan base it’s very likely going to be a tight, highly contested game between two good teams.
It does also help that the Falcons sound like they feel they have something to prove; a chip on their shoulder is something that’s been missing up till now, and would be welcome (and needed) going into the playoffs.

Gosh I sure hope the Falcons convert more 3rd downs than the Saints! That’s the best stat ever-the most accurate predictor of in-game success! Why, I bet the Packers are first in the league in 3rd down efficiency and the Colts are last! Wha-what? They’re not? But how can that be?
Oh and I love the AJC post about New Orleans being a dirty team. What biased, lazy reporting. For starters, if you read the post, the Falcon players do NOT call NO a dirty team. So that should’ve been the headline. Second, the Falcons have REPEATEDY been accused of playing through the whistle all season and that is dismissed by D-Led. I love ATL but wish they weren’t covered by this rag.

I see someone has been trying to impersonate me. LMAO! Fail! I admit the Falcons got into the playoffs when Aaron Rodgers opened the back door, but the important thing is, we’re in. The Falcons don’t have that added pressure in the mix when they take on the ain’ts tonight, and they can afford to lose this one. In fact, I think we will lose it, not because the Falcons can’t beat the ain’ts but because now we can hold our cards close to the vest and not show them what we have in store for them for the playoffs. I don’t think we get the 5th, I don’t want to play the Giants at their place anyway, we are a indoor team and they would blow us out up there, in the cold. I would rather take on the ain’ts inside their superdome, than be out in the weather where we just can’t compete.

Nobody backs into the playoffs in the NFL. This is a tremendous accomplishment and I am so happy for the coaches and players on our team. This represents a lot of hard work and a lot of brain power. The Falcons culture has changed in Atlanta and we are proud to have this team representing us. We have two weeks to refine all phases of this team and I have no doubt that they are even better now than they were last year at this point in the season. There is still work to do but they continue to improve each and every week. I can’t wait for the playoffs this season…. GO FALCONS! Rise UP! I like all of the postseason possibilities. I do expect the Falcons to lose, but that probably means they would have to come back to the SuperDome for a playoff game. I just don’t believe the Saints could beat the Falcons three straight, so under this scenario, we will have an outcome like 1991. If the Falcons get the 3rd seed, Matthew Stafford and Calvin Johnson come back home. This scenario would be the most difficult for Atlanta in my mind, but I feel we could pull off a close one. The 3rd scenario is a trip to New York most likely. Again I think we can handle this one.

The Giants are certainly flawed as flawed can be…same with the Cowboys. But we would be playing inside and against a familiar opponent even if we had to go back and play the Saints in the first round. I would RELISH the opportunity to go back to New Orleans in 2 weeks and knock their ass outta the playoffs in their own building. They can be beat, it’s not like they’re a machine. The Falcons are hitting their stride at the ride time. Green Bay seems to have already peaked, even at 14-1, they won’t win the Super Bowl, I don’t even think they’ll make it. They can’t stop the run, and their pass defense is a piece of work too.
But if we beat the Aints tonight, we’ll get the 5th seed, because we ain’t losing to the Bucs next week. No way. So beat the Aints tonight, and we’ll be going to either NYG, or Dallas. Preferably Dallas because they play in a dome and we’re better inside than outside IMO. Especially in cold weather.

Saints have all the pressure of trying to beat an arch rival twice, trying to clinch the division in front of the home crowd, etc. Falcons really don’t have anything to lose here. Also, you know Brees would love to break the record vs. the Falcons and knowing Brees he probably will, but that doesn’t mean they’ll win. I think Brees will throw a pick or two, and the Falcons will turn those into 7 points a piece. Ryan will have a good night, but I expect Turner to rush for over 100 yards himself.

You know the way I look at this game is if our Team gets beat we still in the playoffs cause the Panthers will come for you next week and be playing more like a playoff contender their selves.
Typical Saints team can’t beat a sub.500 team and everyone knows it so there it is.
Think the Falcons may play tough and get the upset in your house tonight though, as said a week back………………..it may be better to lose this one if we only have two more shots at it against the Saints. Heck, we can’t say for sure if we even have to play the Saints again period so lets see what happens out on the football field………….I am ready are you Aint Turds ready ?

Who cares who wins tonight. NO and ATL are in the playoffs. ATL lost to Green Bay last year. New Orleans beat the Seahawks to go on to play Green Bay in the Super Bowl.
Oh, wait! Different year. Different team for NO to lose to.

Another example of the NFL, National Female League, screwing up a great sport. Lofton makes a tackle face to face and gets flagged. Kelly gets hit from behind and gets a sore back. Where is the consistency in officiating. Why do they keep giving flags to the pretty boy teams. This is getting stupid!

We really need to make a change and remove Mike Mularkey and Van Gorder. Its the same story – they are not good against winning teams. The falcons offense look very average with the same draw plays that don’t work despite the talent. The defense does not have any pressure on the quarterback despite Edwards. There has to be changes, its been three years!!

There’s NO WAY in the world that the Falcons are going to make it to the Super Bowl with the
porous — no tackle — defense and a secondary that couldn’t keep up with Fatty Arbuckle. When are the dolts who decide the draft going to get serious and get some defensive players who can rush, tackle, and play pass defense? It’s a bloody shame Matt Ryan is going to be stuck on this 3rd rate team.

Seriously how can you put a title of “Falcons EARN playoff berth??? They didn’t earn squat, Chicago lost, so that’s how we “earned it” and then we go out and show the country how CRAPPY we really are. Great teams lose, but great teams ALWAYS play competitively, something the Falcons have yet to do this year, even against teams we are supposed to beat. Saints were 9 for 9 on 3rd down at one point and then got stopped and Brees was pissed, we miss 3rd and 4th downs and no one seems to care NO EMOTION and NO PASSION………and finally Van Gorder needs to find a new home, defense is pathetic even if it was Drew Brees, you have to step up. What’s that commercial OH YEA….Rise Up, need to show it at the team meeting this week, another one and done in the playoffs

Ryan became just the second quarterback in franchise history to throw for more than 4,000 yards in a season after posting a career-high with 373 passing yards. This season, Ryan has thrown for 4,065 yards, which trails QB Jeff George’s club record of 4,143 yards, set in 1995, by just 78 yards. Ryan, also tied his career highs with 32 completions and 52 pass attempts, and finished the game with a 92.9 passer rating.
The third-year signal caller has completed 339 of 557 pass attempts this season and is on pace to break his franchise records of 357 completions and 571 attempts set in 2010.

New York Weather Sunday=48′ Sunny-Turf. The Falcons will do just fine. We shall easily dispatch the lowly Giants. They think they are good, their not. They think they have talent-they don’t. They think they will win-they won’t. Thank you Green Bay for making our path to the big show much easier. We can make a run-I actually think the NFC picture looks pretty good for W/C teams-I just hope that the W/C teams win out. There is a chance-albiet slim-that the Falcons host the NFC Championship game-Detroit can score-and they are the only team that could beat the Saints. The Giants are by far the worst team in the NFC playoffs-so the Falcons win in a run-away. Get rid of NO and have Detroit re-match GB and Atlanta will spank San Francisco and maybe we host Detroit in the NFC Championship game….RISE UP!
