Mularkey’s ‘audition’ for Jacksonville job goes well

If Falcons offensive coordinator Mike Mularkey were auditioning on Thursday night for the vacant Jacksonville head-coaching job, he had a great showing.

With Jack Del Rio dismissed by the Jaguars, Mularkey and former Green Bay Packers coach Mike Sherman are on the short list as replacement candidates, according to a recent ESPN report.

Mularkey wants to be a head coach again. He was the Buffalo coach in 2004-05 and posted a 14-18 record.

Mularkey and Bill Musgrave, who left last season to become Minnesota’s offensive coordinator, have been lauded leaguewide for their fast development of quarterback Matt Ryan and for turning the Falcons’ offense into one of the league’s top units.

Mularkey is attractive because of his background in coaching power football. Jacksonville also needs someone to develop quarterback Blaine Gabbert, who is struggling in his first year in the league.

If you think Gabbert is horrid looking now… Let Mularkey at him, he’ll be another JP Losman… Get your line straight, and feed them 60% Pocket Hercules, 20% the stud tight end, 10% those horrid wideouts, and 10% variety… Blaine needs a ton teaching, and influx of realistic confidence…

i think it is a matter of time before mularkey gets his chance at a head coaching job, probably this year.contrary to a lot of “fans” opinions, mularkey has done a remarkable job with this offense, and matt ryan,i hope whoever follows him can continue to improve the falcon offense. coach mularkey can take sam baker with him when he goes, that would improve the line play immensely.

I agree, I think the Jags will hire Murlarkey if we make the playoffs which looks like its going to happen and how well we actually do in the playoffs.

What a bunch of…well…Mularkey. Check your stats before printing this drivel. The Falcons Offense under Mularkey consistently ranks around 14th-16th in Total O. The only reason it’s trending up this year is the increased no-huddle attack that Matt Ryan is running, not MM. Give me a break. Mularkey’s O is predictable and stale, under-utilizes it’s talent and FREQUENTLY under-performs on the field. Want proof? OK, The Falcons have a QB rated in the top 10, a running back and receiver in the top 5, AND a Tight End in the top 10, but their Total O ranks 13th. SORRY, that does NOT look like the player’s fault, now does it?

Go Falcons…and good luck in J-ville Mularkey.

Mularkey is a great offensive coordinator for designing plays. The play Julio scored on was just incredible the way they used the bunch on the right to clear out the middle underneath for Julio coming from the left. But he’s always been a terrible play caller which is obvious because when they go into the no huddle Ryan calls a better game by far.

KQuark, you may have hit the nail on the button. I saw plays last night that I’ve wondered why we haven’t run all year. Who would have thought that getting Julio in space to use his speed and size would have been the best way to use him instead of 10 go routes a game.

The Falcons continue to just pulverize opponents, this team is peaking at the right time and must focus on GB, that is the team to beat. No other team matters.

Mularkey leaves and you will be crying in your coffee! Mark my words….I hope he leaves because I doubt you’ll get anyone better. Matt will possibly have to learn a new system…won’t feel as comfortable and will take time to get everyone on the same page. Consistency pays big dividends….look across the league at the Elite teams and you won’t see coaches jumping all around and a bunch of new OC’s. Good luck bird brains!!

DLed– I have a question about our chances of winning the division, in another post rehashing the game you state that the aints only need to win 1 game to win the division, but unless I’m missing something if we beat them next week and if we win against tampa, and they lose either of their other 2 games, then don’t we’d both be 11-5. And if they lose to Min, then all 5 of their losses would’ve been NFC, whereas only 4 of ours, so we’d win on conf. record, and if they lose to Carolina in the last week, we’d have them beat on Div. record. Am I incorrect about something?

I would love to see us get Norv Turner if Mularkey leaves.

I will be happy to see MM go but hope MS doesn’t go for conservatism in his choice for another OC.
Not to bust a bubble, because that was the best game I have seen in awhile, but the defense is responsible for 17 of those points leaving 24 for the offense. Good but not great. They did look good tho.
I was still unhappy when Redmon and Quizz went in and play calling went to run on 1st & 2nd and throw on 3rd and long. Redmon did a good job considering the Jags knew what we were going to do. Mixing it up a little might have given both of them a better chance to show what they’ve got.

Wow, a lot of negativity toward Mularkey!!! Remember 2007. That is where he started and look at our offense now. He has to coach under Smith who is very conservative. Our coach’s don’t coach our team to be the highest scoring offense, they coach to win. If we are up 17 in the fourth quarter, we are running the ball every play. Mularkey is a very good coach.

Everyone should note how much MR2 did the play calling last night. Good play designer, sure I can accept that, but not a good play caller. Let him go. We should have dominated several teams this year like we did last night.

We are better off without Mularkey. It is not Mularkey who improved Falcons’ offense, it is GM Thomas Dimitroff’s right picks that improved the team.

So THAT’S why the offensive plays we’ve been waiting on finally appeared. Been keeping them close to his vest, for use in his own regime. Good. Look forward to beating hell out of him when the Falcons play him in the future. Good riddance.

Look, I think that MM should open up the play book a little more, especially with Rogers, Turner, Snelling, and even Mughali (sp) coming out of the backfield, and Roddy and Julio running the skinny post. But if he goes so does our consistency, which is what we are all crying for. I would like to see Matt run this offense one more year. That gives Matt another year to get that much better, plus it gives Matt and Julio a full offseason and training camp to work on their timing.

When he’s gone, he’s gone. So is his playbook.

Chris – I remember playing prevent with Dallas in the playoffs. Leeman Bennett had a 13 point lead I believe with about 6 minutes to play. They knew we were going run the clock. We ran three times, gained about 4 or 5 and punted. We gave them 15 yard passes and they scored quickly. They kicked, we ran 3 times for about 4 or 5, punted, gave them 15 yard passes and they won. Remember, how you got a lead. Not by prevent. Ocassionally a pick 6 can happen but I’ll bet more leads are squandered by prevent by a large percentage.

Wish we had Jones-Drew.

Use all our draft picks on O-Line, please.

Mr. Swamp people. let me get this question right. You want to get rid of of Greg Williams and replace him with MM.That’s a Saint for you. Who DAT. replace your defense C. . with a Offense C. Please do that for us.
Greg Williams will not be out of a job for a day. He is one of the best DC in the NFL.You would not have that Superbowl ring without him and his defense. Why did you think Sean Payton pays part of Greg Williams salary out of his pocket?

Frankly, I would hate to see him go. I think the Falcons problem has been one more of execution rather than scheme. I have to admit, that my lack of respect of BVD’s and Mularky’s coaching has changed over the last two games. 64-0 in 6 quarters between the offense and 1st string defense. Pretty awesome, don’t you think? I am hopeful of these next two games and the playoffs and I have to attribute that to their coaching and the player’s execution.
