Texans slow down Falcons’ playoff push, 17-10

Falcons Texans Football

Atlanta recovered the ball after a Falcons defensive tackle Vance Walker (99) grabbed the arm of Houston Texans quarterback T.J. Yates (13), causing a fumble, in first quarter of an NFL football game on Sunday, Dec. 4, 2011, in Houston. AP

HOUSTON — The Falcons’ march to the NFL playoffs suffered a setback on Sunday.

Enlarge photo Dave Einsel, AP Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan (2) is grabbed by Houston Texans defensive end Antonio Smith (94) in the second quarter.

T.J. Yates, who played his high school football at Pope High in Marietta, led the Texans to a 17-10 victory over the Falcons before 71,545 fans at Reliant Stadium.

Yates, who made his first NFL start, received ample help from a stout defense and running back Arian Foster. The Falcons chipped in with some overthrown passes, dropped footballs and untimely penalties that helped erase two touchdowns.

“That was not the kind of performance that we want to have, especially at this point in the season,” Falcons coach Mike Smith said.

Yates, a 24-year old rookie, out-played Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan, who was under duress from Houston’s blitzing 3-4 defense. Yates completed 12 of 25 passes for 188 yards and one touchdown. He had a passer rating of 86.8.

Ryan, who overthrew three long passes and was intercepted twice, has had much better days. He completed 20 of 47 passes for 267 yards and one touchdown. He had a passer rating of 50.6 points.

The Texans improved to 9-3. The Falcons dropped to 7-5, and could find themselves two games behind the New Orleans Saints in the NFC South if the Saints handled the Detroit Lions in the late Sunday night game.

With four games to play, the Falcons will need the Saints to partially collapse in order to defend their NFC South title. Realistically, the Falcons are in a battle for one of the two wildcard slots with Dallas, the New York Giants, Chicago, Detroit and Seattle.

The loss was difficult for the Falcons to accept.

“We feel like this was a game that we should have dominated,” cornerback Dunta Robinson said. “I can honestly say that the only team that beat us this year was the Chicago Bears. The rest of the games, we shot ourselves in the foot, on both sides of the ball.

“If we want to be a dominant football team, we can’t beat ourselves. We are too good of a team to make some of these mistakes.”

With the score tied 10-10, Robinson was one of the culprits.

Linebacker Mike Peterson had intercepted Yates and had an apparent 32-yard touchdown. But, on the other side of the field, Robinson was in a fierce battle for inside position with Houston wide receiver Kevin Walter. Robinson was called for a holding penalty to erase the touchdown.

With a new set of downs, the Texans put together a 19-play drive. Foster capped it with a 1-yard touchdown to put the Texans ahead with just over six minutes to play.

Instead of taking a 17-10 lead on Peterson’s “touchdown” the Falcons were down.

Earlier in the game, on third and 8 from the Falcons 15, Yates was hit by defensive tackle Vance Walker. Safety James Sanders picked up the fumble and returned it for a touchdown. Even though no whistle was blown, players from both teams thought it was an incomplete pass and wandered onto the field, anticipating a Texans’ field goal attempt.

“The ruling on the field was the ball was dislodged from his hand before his hand went forward, so the fumble was ruled,” referee Bill Levy said. None of the players who wandered onto the field interfered with the play. “It was what we call a double foul after a change. What we decided to do is offset those penalties at the spot where the Atlanta player came on the field.”

Defensive end Ray Edwards was announced at the Falcons player who came onto the field, but Levy later announced there were multiple players from each side on the field.

The play was called back and instead of a touchdown, the Falcons were given the ball on their 35. Ryan was intercepted three plays later.

The Falcons started off misfiring.

Ryan missed on deep passes to Roddy White and Julio Jones on their first and third plays from scrimmage. He also was intercepted later on a flea flicker when the Falcons tried to catch the Texans’ safeties creeping up to help in the run game.

Ryan was not pleased with his game. The Texans basically dared him to beat them with some deep passes and he didn’t pull it off.

Smith said the offense played in spurts.

“We had opportunities, specifically early,” Ryan said. “We had some shots designed that were really good. I just missed on them.”

The Texans came up to stop running back Michael Turner and then tried to blitz Ryan into throwing quickly. Turner was held to 44 yards on 14 carries.

White, who had two back-to-back 100-yard games, caught four passes for 51 yards and a touchdowns.

“Our rationale coming into the game was let’s try and hit some of those balls down the field,” Ryan said. “We designed them to get one-on-one matchups with our guys and kind of pushed those safeties off. We just didn’t make enough plays. We didn’t make the plays when we needed to.”

Instead of keeping pace with the Saints and moving to the head of the playoff class, the Falcons find themselves back in the middle of the NFC pack.

The Falcons are the ultimate pretender. Mike Smith and his “Process” is getting old as they find new ways to beat themselves weekly.
I’d rather watch the Food Channel on TV than to sit thru another humiliating piece of junk as they demonstrate every time they are a “lock”.

Gomzo & Douglass are the only receivers who can catch. Roddy butterfingers has rubbed off on Julio the dropmiester – that last pass was right in BOTH OF HIS HANDS and he just let go and dropped it. Another pass hit him right between his numbers that he dropped.
GIVE SNELLING THE BALL! Snelling runs hard & angry – Turner is now another Jamal Anderson in his 3rd year – touch him and he goes down like a baby. Snelling has a good run, they don’t give the ball for another 15 plays.
Smith is being outcoached week after week. He’s lost this team.

We will still make the playoffs. Saints will beat the Lions tonight and that’ll leave the Lions with 5 losses just like we have…but guess what? We own the tiebreaker over them. So we’re in a win/win situation tonight. Saints lose =good….Saints win = even better because we’re still in the playoffs. The Bears don’t look like they’re going to make it without Cutler. We’re in a good spot.

There is enough blame to go around for everyone in this loss. I didn’t start watching until right up to half-time, but the Falcons were down 10-3. I especially blame Dunta Robinson for that stupid penalty which negated a great defensive interception and touchdown. That, to me-was the play of the game and would’ve put us in a position to control the clock and the ball down the stretch. I’m sure there were also many more plays that we could’ve, should’ve made.

This coaching staff has been exposed. Chicago. Green Bay. New Orleans. Houston. All out coached us. We may still sneak into the playoffs (detroit losing tonight keeps us in the last Wild Card spot) but I see another one and done. Too many dropped passes. Dont know how to mix Turner and Snelling. Mental errors leading to penalties. Offensive side of the staff has to be replaced. BVG gets a pass for now because he has been working with one hand tied behind his back but Mularkey, receivers coach, QB, maybe line (though he is working with sub-par material too), all need to be replaced. If Smitty wont do it, then we have to seriously consider a complete change. This is year four of the “process” and we are regressing, not improving.

Ryan can’t throw the long pass. 1st & 3rd play of the game were TD passes if Ryan could throw an accurate pass. After that, some of the worst bungeling of dropped passes I’ve seen in a pro game. Not including HD in this. The falcons gave this one away. Last play to JJ, … Killer.
I usually criticise Owens but he and Franks played OK. I hope this improvement continues. D played tough but were worn down by long time on field due to poor play by offense. With JJ, RW, HD, TG & QB MR along with 3 good RB’s, 10 points is unacceptable. Good D by Houston but they didn’t make the dropped balls happen. Catches on those would have been Falcon points.
The buck usually stops with the HC. MS is a good 9-7, 10-6, even 11-5 coach but seems to have trouble going farther than that like playoff wins. Get Bill Cowher.

What is wrong with fixing these things beforehand, we enter the fourth quarter of the season and every week still in fixit mode. Today’s game proved how mediocre the Falcons really are. Dropped passes, more stupid penalities, defense could not stop the run. This loss is huge. Falcons go 3-1 at best the rest of the way, likely 2-2 and won’t make playoffs. The worse part is no future to look forward to. Falcons gave future away with the Jones pick. Jones was supposed to put Falcons over the top offensively and I would argue they are worse off this year because their line is not as strong. Worse move Dimitroff has ever made. That trade will be his undoing someday.

WhoDat, they will NEVER blame Ryan for ANYTHING. 3 missed open WR’s that could have been scores or easily led to scores. But of course the blame will go elsewhere as we see. The other asset(getting downfield) is a non-factor because he won’t get the ball.

Great Falconi

December 4th, 2011
5:06 pm

Just one of those games for the Falcons today. Dudes were dropping balls left and right; Ryan was throwing the ball off his back foot because he wouldn’t stand strong in the pocket; Mularkey was calling QB bootlegs in key situations, thereby cutting off half the field; our defensive line couldn’t get consistent pressure; Dunta Robinson made a huge mistake; the running game was nonexistent, while the Texans’ running game was at its best on the game-winning TD drive.

Julio Jones had two total bonehead plays on that final drive. His total lack of awareness cost us at least 8-10 seconds when he needed to run back to the line of scrimmage. He went out of bounds on his own, costing himself a really nice reception. The drop on the last pass was bad, but if he hadn’t screwed up on the other plays, we would have had more chances. Julio better redeem himself next week. He stunk it up today.

We play the Panthers and Jags next. I figured we would lose this game because I feel like I understand our team pretty well. We are a 9-7 to 10-6 bunch. We have regressed in the areas that got us a 13-3 record last season (few penalties, few turnovers). If we ever stop shooting ourselves in the foot, we’ll be a team worthy of hype.

Clay

December 4th, 2011
5:08 pm

One consistent this season has been the lack of execution. Falcons lead the ,league in dropped passes. Ryan can’t hit a receiver down field even if he’s wide open. I don’t think I’ve ever seen the receivers and quarterback for the Falcons be so out of sync.

lamac66

Chicken Farmer

December 4th, 2011
5:09 pm

Sad to say, but Matt Ryan isn’t the answer to the Falcon’s woes. He can’t throw the ball accurately beyond 15 yards and probably 25 yards is his maximum range and at that distance, the receiver must be mobile enough to stop, turn on the speed or reverse his pattern in order to come close to catching a Matt Ryan thrown ball. A five year starter in college, beginning his first game today (T.J.Yates/UNC) beat a Falcon’s team with a 4 year pro starter who missed his throws miserably today. The few that were on target were of the 4 or 5 yard distance which doesn’t beat very many NFL teams.

REALLY!? Where do I start? Offense..or lack thereof..stupid ass penality’s that cost us 2 touchdowns..dropped passes by all concerned! 9th ranked run defense could not get a stop when it counted..Matt Ryan has take another step backwards as has been stated throughout the year..Another rookie Q/B kicks our collective asses once again!
These birds are done..all that’s left to do is pluck their collective tail feathers! Once again they have proven that they can not play with the better teams..They were in trouble all day long! No run game..No passing game..very little up front blocking..where do they go from here? Back home to the couch and watch the better teams perform in the playoffs..

Sort of interesting to note that the Broncos now have the same record as the Falcons–7 and 5. While Tebow gets all the insults and Ryan gets all the accolades for his picture-perfect passing form, you can’t deny the results.

4 years in the odor from this “process” is becoming unbearable. It’s true that u can’t judge a draft until several years later and now it’s really time to re-evaluate what we have in this dimitroff/smith brain trust. We drafted a QB that can’t throw with accuracy more than 25 yards down the field and gave up the world for a rook WR that can’t stay on the field.

THIS COULD TURN VERY UGLY OVER THE NEXT COUPLE OF YEARS with Newton maturing in Carolina, Brees surrounded by weapons in NOLA and Tampa Bay continuing to stockpile young talent.

I always get a kick out of the NOLA fans that love to come on AJC blogs and talk trash about the Dawgs and Falcons. Must be terribly insecure folks.

But what can you expect when you come from a giant septic tank of a city. My firsthand impressions of the place is that it is a mixture of vomit, urine, bums, and hos – often together – that reeks like an outhouse, but sprinkled with a few pretty good restaurants. More Katrinas are coming, but we spent billions to rebuild a city that is 20 feet below sealevel. We should have flushed the toiled instead.

Can’t win football games when receivers keep dropping passes, Falcons lead league in drop passes…no surprise there, but it’s surprising that this team is one of the most penalized teams in league and was least penalized team last year…Matt Ryan is horrible throwing the deep ball and he wasn’t accurate throwing the deep ball in college…falcons have talent on offense, but these guys haven’t raised their level to elite status and this is the time a team is suppose to be playing their best ball, just don’t see that yet with falcons…no momentum at all.

Julio Jones is horrible. One interception was his fault and the last play of the game. Did anyone see the ball go straight through his hands. I think Julio is the Issiah Crowell of the Falcons. A time out had to be taken too because he didn’t know what to do. Horrible performance by the receivers and the O line was missing in action.

I blame the whole offense. No protection with all the tips and rushed passes. Delay of game penalties by ryan. DROPPED passes all game by every receiver. Had a good game plan but it was clearly not executed. We should end up at least 10-6 and I think that’ll be good enough for a wild card since we be det in a tie breaker. Doesn’t mean the playoff will be good because we’ll probably end up playing against green bay.

people talking about the falcons as a wild card us as falcons fans will come out better watching a buzzy bunny and road runner cartoon. why because there offense is not very creative and there defense can”t stop a moving car and all you got to do is hit the break…

Dwayne C

The Falcons = lack of a consistent pass rush, a starting RB who takes too long to get out of the backfield after taking the hand off, a QB who overthrows his receivers now on a routine basis, a WR this team gave up numerous draft picks for who is injury prone and drops too many passes and untimely penalties every game that negate at least one huge play on offense or defense

The Atlanta Falcons will go, at best, 2-2 the rest of this season and finish at 9-7. The Falcons may, despite only nine wins, earn a wild card playoff seed but I can’t envision this team winning a road playoff game.

Let’s assume the Falcons don’t make the playoffs. How do they improve their roster? They won’t be able to do much in the next NFL draft since they gave up so many picks for WR Julio Jones. This, I think, dooms this team to another 8-8 or 9-7 finish next year in 2012.

OK, falcons fans, it is obvious what needs to happen with the falcons and it needs to come from the GMs office. Your HC is one stubborn guy with not a clue of what it takes to win at the next level. It’s not only Houston. The birds have sneaked by some teams this year and better prepare for Cam next week, or you will be out of the playoff race. At a minimum you will have 7 losses at the end of the regular season and maybe more. 6 and 7 will be Carolina and the Saints.

Yates, a 24-year old rookie, arguably out-played Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan, who was under duress for most of the game from Houston’s blitzing 3-4 defense.

Ryan will make a great coach one day. I have no doubt he puts in the time @ Flowery Branch and that he knows the offense better than anyone in the organization. But that doesn’t change the fact that he couldn’t throw it in the ocean if he’s 26 yards away from the shoreline. He’d be a great backup to a real franchise QB.

Tough loss and I am tired of this team stressing me out every game. I am so over Dunta Robinson. That hold away from the play cost the birds, but the dropped passes were one right after another. Julio had a chance to be the hero, but not today.

Not down on the birds, still think a chance to make the playoffs, but one and out if they cant play like professionals. Carolina is licking their chops right now.

I agree with a previous post to start Snelling. He is just as strong, but doesnt dance behind the line of scrimmage. He makes a small hole bigger. On a huge positive note I thought Petersen played a great game at linebacker and should stay in the lineup.

Ryan has got to get better at the long ball….wasted opportunities today.

Folks keep bringing up the trade of draft picks for JJ. Thing is, this is a Free Agent league now, with the hard cap and short-term contracts. There is more upside than downside in the draft – the opportunity to grab someone special but the ability to dump someone who doesn’t work out and sign a FA replacement. I think the trade was worth the risk. The bigger issue for me is the recent oiff-season FA signings of Robsinson and Edwards – both seriously underperforming.

Missing those wide open receivers on that first series of downs was inexcusable. Stupid penalties hurt us big time as well. Julio Jones makes some nice catches….then drops easy balls and STOPS thinking out there when he should have been hustling back to the huddle and forgets we are out of time outs and the clock running down! I suspect if they gave him a random drug test.,,,,he’d fail. You can’t make one good play….then make a bad play…,and think you have contributed anything! We wasted alot of draft picks on this clown. This loss was the worst of the season, including the saints game! The last second drop by Jones was inexcusable, and a clear example of not having his head in the game which first became evident after his poor rout caused the games second interception.
Rookie recievers are rarely great, and while I think that he will give us some great play in the future, he is obviously not the game breaker that he was billed to be. That along with two TD’s called back and two bad over throws for a sure six proves that explosive is not something that this team is even approaching!
The Saints exploded on this Houston team early in the season when Houston was healthy, and we did not approach exploding or begin to even bother their third string QB.with our starting front four!
The depleted secondary did a decent job, but I also have to wonder what is wrong with Ryan? He seems like’s some other teams QB not our pro bowler from last year. I only hope that it was the strange year with no camp or OTA’s, and not a sign of more to come!
With all of that said it was still a game that we could have tied in the last second, but our fenom could not hold on to a ball that hit him between both of his hands with no obstruction, and that is not acceptable! Mike Jenkins would have made that catch and that’s just sad!

With our history, a winning season should be the only must, but considering all of the pre season hype, this club will be lucky to make the playoffs much less actually win their first play off game
since Smith and Ryan arrived!
I love this team and have followed since day one as a young child, but some of the losses, and even wins have stung this year!

I think we have a great staff, but we badly need secondary depth, will soon need a TE and RB, and we still have no pass rush!

Falcons would only make playoffs as consolation team to others failures and never make it past the first round. They are the NFL poster child for poor play and lack of heart, a real shame considering the potential talent.
The Falcons can’t catch, can’t score in the red zone, can’t defend the pass and can’t manage to establish any consistent winning attitude. It is doubtful these Falcons will ever measure up an elite status given mediocre staff from Mike smith on down. Matt Ryan is way overratted and Julio Jones is a joke. The list goes on…but suffice to say, this is NOT a playoff caliber team. If I were Aurthur Blank I’d go back to the drawing board cause this Falcon team lacks leadership and heart.

Oh Yea, M. Turner wasn’t going to have an impact in this game, because of his groin injury. You could pretty much dictate how the Falcons were going to play the Texans, and they played good enough to win, but again, stupid penalties and dropped balls doomed any chance that they had to do that. Good teams find a way to win, in spite of their known shortcomings. Average teams can only hope to eek out a win with minimum turnovers. Falcons-What kind of team are you? At this point, I dare to say they are slightly above average for a bad team and slightly below average for a good team. “Lukewarm”

ok guys it’s not the end of the world. Jeez. team has talent. Just didn’t execute well today for a variety of reasons. Blame can go around.

Changes I think for next season:
running back – turner is good but imo just too slow at this point. He can’t more laterally
fullback – need our starter back
need a slightly better o-line

Otherwise I think next year we will be starting all veterns. Will hopefully have an easier schedule. So yeah… next year sadly. I still think we will make the wild card but will lose the first game.

I usually do not criticize the Falcons even if they play badly but today’s game was horrible. Terrible game game and execution. A rookie 3rd string QB should have been pressured the entire game and he would have made mistakes. No pressure on him allowed him to throw for 200 yds with no INT’s. Julio Jones looked awful. He needs to learn where sideline is where he is not forced out of bounds on attempted atches, did not hustle back to huddle with 40 seconds left in game, missed catch last play of game(big time WR’s make that play), perhaps dsguisting long braids got in his eyes. CB #23 (Robinson)is awful cost one TD with his hold and probably others with his coverage, does not tackle well downfield. a complete waste of money. Ryan missed receivers wide open first of game, no guarantee they would have caught them though. Running a 250 lb RB, lateral instead of just straight is completely stupid!! He does not have that type of speed anymore(if he ever had it). Tough loss to allow 3rd string QB to defeat you, might have knocked you out of playoff hunt with that effort today.

Julio seemed to check out when it mattered most on the final drive and final play. Hopefully he matures. However, his hands were never that good in college so I worry that he will never be dependable for clutch catches. Just not nearly enough draft picks to make the Falcons a consistent team….need OL (big, mean ol’ fat boys who can block), LBs/DL who can consistently get pressure and some DBs who are not skinny midgets. Other than that, everything is good. Julio is not the answer so far but maybe if there was a running game (OL block someone), Julio and company might be able to do some damage. On the positive side…just look at Gonzalez…the man has some hands and heart.Long way to go for Birds.

Matt Ryan overthrew too many balls but he was hurried all day. Receivers need a gut check. When will Smith learn Turner is a liability? Unless he just pounds straight ahead with no sidesteps at all he is useless. We need a big pounding back that just runs over people and has some moves. Turner has lost it. Snelling is even better. The diva Dunta costs the team again. When are we gonna waive him? We will not make the playoffs.

Yes, lamac66, I am concerned about Ryan’s three overthrown balls to wide open receivers. I go back to the first game last year in Pittsburg. HD was wide open for a touchdown in OT, but the ball went over his head and we lose that game. For the past two years the team supposedly was working on improving its downfield passing in training camp. C’mon man, the downfield passing game has been and continues to be terrible.

I’d like to see some improvement. I’d like to read that Jones, White, Douglas and Ryan are working after practice on their passing/receiving like Montana and Rice.

And by the way, it seems obvious to everyone posting comments on this blog that Jason Snelling runs harder than Michael Turner, yet the coaching staff still starts Turner. What the heck do they see that we are missing?

Jordan

December 4th, 2011

78

December 4th, 2011
8:16 pm

The Falcons failed to seize opportunities throughout the entire game. Ryan overthrew downfield receivers early. Penalties overturned two defensive touchdowns. Smith went for it on fourth down twice (in field goal range) and the O failed both times. Wide receivers frequently dropped the ball. Overall, I think the defense did OK. Holding the Texans to 17 points, the Falcons should have won. Make field goals on the two fourth down tries, it’s 17-16, and the Falcons are driving at the end of the game to make a field goal for a win, not a touchdown for a tie. The whole team needs to get refocused. Sure, the playoffs are possible, but the Falcons need to win three of their next four games to even have a chance.

lamac66

Mike J,

They have a good running corps. The problem is they give up on the run too soon and try to be a shoot out offense without downfield passing game. Julio Jones can break off a play. He can get downfield but the ball is not likely to get to him.

To be fair to the coaching staff, they are somewhat limited on creativity they can use due to the overrated skills most think the falcons have especially on defense. No matter what Smith does and it doesn’t work, the fans go off. I applaud him for going for it on 4th down. If he doesn’t, folks call him too conservative. If it fails they say he should have played for the tie. Falcon fans for ya

To those who say the team is not good while i will not disagree with you, please remember this team was put together by TD and Smitty. For them to believe they were a wideout away from elite status and traded all those picks was a huge gamble which borders on crazy. I like JULIO AND THINK HE WILL BE VERY GOOD, but I doubt he could produce so much more than Jenkins would to warrant that trade. The problem at Left tackle and DB still remains and must be addressed next draft or in FA.
I think it is time to give up on Sam Baker, I doubt he is in it 100%, and it seems his short arms that Mel Kiper spoke about is true and may be a reason for his ineffectiveness.

A pop warner kid could produce more than Jenkins. Jenkins was another example of falcons keeping guys around too long. Jenkins was not even a #4 receiver on most teams.

Because you were playing one of the BEST teams in the NFL. Nobody ever gives the Texans a chance, and I understand, they haven’t deserved it so far. However, now is the time. My Texans will be the number one team in the AFC South. And have a chance at great sucess!! Watch out, the Cowboys are going dowm!!!!!

And by the way, the terrible game plan cost us the NO game last year and contributed to the blowout against GB in the playoffs. If there is ANY accountability, White, Julio, Turner and Robinson should be benched for the next game. I’d rather lose with the other guys than win with those guys. And foget about the playoffs. Playoffs are for teams that have a chance to make a run for the SB. Does ANYONE think the Falcons have a chance against NO or GB? I dont. Sorry but thats a hard reality…

Hey Falcons fans welcome The TEXANS world for the past 10 years……last year for example: the top 5 finishes as per ESPN had 4 TEXANS games……all four were losses for the TEXANS!!!! add in all the times we seemed to have Payton and Colts beat only to lose yet again!!!! Also per ESPN Falcons have
the best offensive line and the TEXANS have not played a team as good as Atlanta in the past 6 games, only reason TEXANS defense is number one in the NFL! – 44 yards rushing for Turner! FOSTER
over 100 yards rushing…first time in 15 games RB has gone for over 100 yards against the Falcons!!! don’t matter how its done a win is a win!!!!!!! wish i could feel sorry for ya’ll but i just can’t ! add the Oilers in to the past ten years and its a freakin’ nightmare for HOUSTON fans!! (THIIRD STRING ROOKIE QB, MARIO WILLIAMS OUT, ANDRE JOHNSON OUT) Texans are a darn good team!!!!

How can a team with Ryan, White, Gonzalez, Jones and Turner only score 10 points. Granted it they were playing the #1 D, but look at the weapons we have. It can only be the O scheme, a change is needed at OC to maximize the talent. Can you believe it, Denver is 7-5 with a QB everyone say’s can’t play the position, Atl is 7-5 with an All Pro at QB. Something is not right here. Sometimes you need a leader that just “wills” you to victory, Denver has such a QB.

All I want for Christmas is a new head head, OC and DC. With the right coaches we could turn around like the 49′ers. Ryan can not throw more than twenty yards, give Redman a chance, he couldn’t do any worse.Redman can hit receives deep!!!!!!!!!!! Hire John Gruden as head coach and Jack Del Rio as defense coach. Del Rio does not run Smith’s soft zone. Soft zone means slowly let them go to end zone and eat up clock.

We Falcon fans just have to realize this team is just a little above average. The offensive line is average at best. Anytime they fact a good defensive front Ryan is running for his life and does not have time to complete passes. Yesterday was a prime example. If Blank is serious about getting better he will get out the check book and sign two quality offensive linemen in the off season. We also need a running back that has some power and speed. Turner is fine against teams with average Defensive fronts, then he can break into the secondary several times a game for big plays. But good defenses the kind you face in the playoffs don’t allow this to happen and Turner winds up with 40 yards on 15 carries. The Falcons secondary is bad even when healthy and the group that they put back their Sunday was a joke. Even when they manage to stay with a receiver, which is rare, they can’t make a play on the ball. Again, if Blank wants to win he better get the check book. Defensive line is average. While Abraham got a couple of sacks Sunday, other than a few pressures, he was not a disruption for the quarterback. Edwards was an upgrade to the line but mostly against the run. He is not the pass rusher we needed. Weatherspoon is the only defensive player that stands out. Finally at receiver, how many passes can they drop. White has too much experience to be dropping all the passes he is and Julio killed us Sunday throughout the game and then just dropped the TD pass on final play. No one knocked it away he just dropped it. The bottom line is the Falcons, facing a team down to its 3rd team QB and without its best defensive lineman, could not win. And not to let the coaches off the hook, did they not know the crowd was going to be a factor in the game. Why no anwser to the croud noise. And to finish things off. I have never heard the Georgia Dome as loud as Reliant Stadium was Sunday. Maybe we fans need to look at ourselves as well.

the last time the falcons had home field advantage through out the playoffs was 1980, leading the cowboys the entire game with only a few minutes left in the game, and lost, the team and organization were awful for years after. Go back to last season the team goes 13-3, best record in the NFC a week one bye and home field advantage through out the playoffs.then suffer one of the most embrassing defeats in NFL history… it’s 1980 all over again and the team is heading south folks…

I am now completely convinced that we have a major coaching problem. We have enough talent on offense to compensate for the short coming of the defense. The offensive of talent doesn’t match with the points being scored.

We have the worst 3rd quarters at all 32 teams in the NFL. it seems if we are up at half time, you can bet by the start of the 4th quarter we are playing catch up. Stupid mental mistakes and the offense tends to stalls. I really think thats coaching. There is no way a good coach will not make the necessary adjustments during half time and not have his team ready to play during the 2nd half. Just plain awful.

Finally, a team realized ‘hey, this is not Peyton Manning, lets rush this qb and play man to man with these receivers.’ Took long enough. The league and press fell into this Peyton Manning, Jr hype.

Well Dunce’, possibly the problem lies in your and Roddy’s perception of reality……if you shoot yourselves in the foot constantly, you’re not as good as you believe. Perception: 11-1 Reality: 7-5

Mike Smith — stop coddling these professionals. You don’t have to bad mouth them in a press conference, but can make a statement without using words.

1. Start Douglas, Weems and Meier at WR for the first series next week. That should wake up the prima donnas.

2. Somewhere in the 4-6th round next year draft the best-available QB with a gun-slinger mentality. Make Matt Ryan re-earn his starting job.

Lighten Up from Texas. Falcons fan forever, but I have followed the Texans this year, and they are for real. The running game and defense are best in the league. Falcons should have won, but they lost to a good opponent. This is the game they could afford to lose down the stretch. AFC opponent on the road. The falcons take care of 3 of 4 remaining, they are in. Detroit stinks, Chicago will lose out, Giants and Cowboys play each other. Falcons don’t need to worry about NFC South Title.

This is why Falcons never make ESPN Sports center talk on Monday…come to think of it, they never make news.
Regardless what anyone thinks of Tim Tebow as a QB, he at least shows leadership and inspires his team to try, which is the opposite is the ATL Falcons…gross underachievers who play for the paycheck. Falcons are bunch of losers who beat up on other loser teams. They can’t win one against quality teams.

I am seriously having doubts about giving up so many draft picks for J.J. especially since Douglass has proven he would have been sufficient at that position. The Falcons beat themselves plain and simple from the first play of the game to the last play. There is enough blame to go around from the recievers to the QB and the others. Can we please get a new coaching staff? A coaching staff with some heart and a desire to win. And would someone please tell me why we picked up Ray Edwards? He is turning out to be just as worthless as J. Jones. Why is the only productive player on the team the one player we tried to get rid of (Snelling)? Because in case you all forgot even Mr. Reliable (Gonzalez) dropped a ball.

Mock 1 – we have a solid D line except for Edwards. Our secondary could use some work especially that safety spot but the problem with our team is not he defense it is poor coaching. Get off the defense they play with heart every Sunday. Maybe their attitudes can rub off on the rest of the team.

Face it Failcan fans, you had your shot last year. The balls all bounced your way, you won 13 and didn’t ride it all the way possible. You have to take advantage of the opportunity when it comes. Do you think the Saint’s were a better team than the Colts? If we play the Colts ten times, they would hve won 8 out 10……but on that day, we were better. Opportunity doesn’t knock that often, ask Marino.

Falcons fans better hope that Smith doesn’t get complacent with loafing or even worse the thugness attitude the Lions displayed against the Saints last night. The Lions had 45 yards worth of penalties for personal fouls. After each of the three fouls the HC was calmly talking to them on the sidelines and patting them on the back, rather than getting in their face and benching them. Is Smith a lion or a lamb? Yours to decide with future issues with Jones and White.
