Falcons do NOT have that Killer Instinct and it all is a reflection of their head coach. Period. Unlike Sean Payton, or Less Myles, Bill Bilecheck – (sp) Coach Smith do not allow his team to press and stay aggressive 4 full quarters.

Never has and never will. In all the years the Smith regime has been here, show me any 4 games where the Falcons were up by 17 or more points heading into the 3rd or 4th quarters and they scored more 2nd half points than their opponents. You can’t. That’s because of Smith’s philosophy of grind it out, control the clock and “prevent defense”.

So as a Falcon fan, you always have it in the back of your mind that this team will let an opposing team back into the game and most of our games will be close.

@Falcons4eva, I’m with you on your prespective about coach Smith. He does not have that killer mentality that the elite coaches have. It’s no way you have a 17 plus points lead going into the second half and by the end of the third quarter we are wondering are we going to blow this game. Coach Smith need to look at what Sean Payton did to the Giants last night and take a page from his aggressive coaching style.

It’s a scary proposition when you see the Falcons get ahead with a two touch down lead, and let a team get back into the game. The Packers are the team that comes to mind. You have to play with a sense of urgency in the third and fourth quarter, the elite teams keep the pedal to the metal. Their whole objective is to keep scoring points no matter what. I think there’s enough talent on the offensive side of the ball to accomplish this. Like most fans believe, Coach Smith is the culprit. He may have to get out of his own way.

Atlanta doesn’t have a pro sports team that doesn’t seem to have that philosophy of “try not to lose”. We need to get some coaches who want to play as hard as possible for the whole game – now, that would be fun to watch…

Maybe coach Smith is taking pedal-to-metal-after-half-time lessons this week…. but I doubt it.

This coaching regime has shown the ability to learn and adapt and change in many areas of weekness, though usually way too slowly, but on this point I am afraid it’s just in Smith’s DNA to tighten up and sit on a lead, giving Falcon nation a weekly heart stress-test and puckered hiney.

Maybe Mularkey goes to Jacksonville as HC next year, but would Smith bring in an attacking OC and let him attack all the time?

Let’s not over react to the texan’s record. Look who they have beat:

2 x Jacksonville
Pittsburgh (by a measly 7 with some questionable calls)
Tennesee
Indianapolis
Cleveland
Miami
and Tampa Bay (although admittedly a thrashing)

They are good but not worthy of fear.

I think the above comments regarding the Falcons’ lack of a killer instinct and any proclivity toward burying opponents (as opposed to trying to build a lead in the first half and going into “control the damage” or “turtle” mode the second half) are pretty much the concensus right now not only among the fanbase but also everyone who follows the NFL. On paper, the Falcons could and SHOULD be able to blow most teams out week after week, but predictably inconsistent playcalling and Jeckyll-and-Hyde 1st and 2nd-half acts repeatedly allow clearly outmatch opponents to make nail-biters out of them.

And this is why there is no media hype or “buzz” around the league surrounding this team. As much as I hate to say it (and I DO hate it), the article S.I. ran today about the Saints being the only NFC team able to challenge Green Bay may be true as things stand. The Falcons have the personnel to play either of those teams very close, no question, but currently just do not have the playcalling or the killer instinct to do so. There’s no question the Mike Smith has steadied the team and made it a consistent winner moreso than any previous coach, but at the same time, coaching in some cases seems to be holding the Falcons back, whether his own or Mularkey and/or Van Gorder in certain instances.

Maybe it’s best that the Falcons fly well under the radar for awhile longer though. Maybe, just maybe they’ll surprise us in a GOOD way come January for a change instead of the wheels flying off again.

November 29th, 2011

Really? A Tough test? Houston doesn’t even have a quarterback. This headline is stupid. If the Falcons have a tough time against the Texans, they don’t belong in the playoffs. They should steam roll them. Also, I agree with the other posters above that the Falcons do lack the killer instinct and the play calling gets so conservative when they get a lead that they let teams back into the game.

All I can say to the haters is, we are once again talking about the Playoffs. We are in another winning season. There are as many bright spots about the team as complaints. I’m proud of the team and feel we can win a playoff game or 2 this year. Are we Green Bay? No. Are we Washington? No. Go Falcons

This is good..#1 defense in the land against this explosive Falcon offense…………

Long day coming up for the 72 million dollar Pro-Bowl QB for sure..Hope Turner can give him relief?

Maybe he can deliver the ball with enough velocity that allows his receivers to hold on to the ball…

I totally agree–Houston is on their 3rd QB, a rookie who was running the scout team until last week. If this is a tough test, then what exactly will it be when we face Brees again, or even Josh Freeman or Cam Newton for that matter? Houston does have talent but they annually underachieve and are in a weak conference. Falcons should win by 2 TDs easily.

CGD… If you had been a fan as long as I have been, you would understand. We NEVER had back to backs, we NEVER had hope. We NEVER were in Post season conversations. Mike Smith, and Matt Ryan have changed that. Like Brees did with the Aints. It’s just easier to be a fan now, than over the past 40 years.

Remember when we used to complain about the the fact that the Falcons didn’t win games? Now we complain about HOW they win games. Last time I checked the Steelers don’t blow people out (see Sunday night’s 12-9 win over a terrible Chiefs team), but they win Super Bowls. No style points in the NFL. Just win baby like the late Al Davis used to say.

Guys, Get serious – Mike Smith is a HUGE reason ur expectations have shot through the roof & ur disappointed when we don’t make a deep run into the playoffs.

Smitty u’ve done an amazing job w/ this team, putting it together w/ TD, & brining a winning mentality to ATL 4 the 1st time since the early D. Reeves days. This blog & its complainers r a testament to that.

Keep up the good work!

Go Falcs, should have no problem w/ a QB-less team in the TExans.

Oh yeah, & TRADE JULIO JONES!!! (we should be able to get some picks or missing Defensive pieces for him while he’s still young)

he’s NOW becoming the Offensive version of PERIA JERRY . . . a consistently hurt – high, 1st round pick who’s isn’t contributing anything to this team.

We’re Now 4 – 0 When JJ DOES NOT PLAY!

Translation = Don’t need him (or his #6 pick salary)

Don, you are right on the money. Don’t know if you read DLed’s or other’s blogs regularly, but there are a handful of people who post the same boring BS over and over. They are the type of jerks you would avoid in real life, and are best ignored here. Any time anyone makes a good point or otherwise calls them on there BS, they will always resort to “no playoff wins.” They have no clue this makes them sound like idiots.

I am one who believes that the Falcons are the most snake bitten franchise in the NFL. However, it is looking like they are moving out of this curse and moving toward greatness. They are still young and will only improve with age. We are on pace to have our 4th winning season in a row and second playoff year in row which will be a first. (Baring a key injury like in the past, knock on wood)

I am PROUD to say I am an Atlanta Falcon fan. GO FALCONS!!! ;)

I don’t know if we can win Sunday with the Owens and Franks lost in space show. Luckily, the Vikings only threw their way a few times for a few TDs and not smart like the better teams will pick them apart all day. Get well Grimes and Hayden please. At least Owens ran down and prevented one TD. He’s given up 4 TDs and prevented 1 TD in the last 2 games. What a joke. Also, why didn’t we just get Torrey Smith and keep all our draft picks as projected instead of moving up for another stone hands injury prone receiver.

The Texans will be tough to beat with or without an experienced QB. Their top ranked defense will keep them in the game. I look no further than Seattle with Tavares Jackson at the QB position. Jackson threw for 320 yards and nearly beat us. I think we won 30-28. Falcons will win in a squaker 17-16.

First of all there is only one elite team in the NFL and that is the Green Bay Packers and even they have flaws. The falcons have all the tools to beat them in Lambeau in January, a good run game that takes up time of possesion, great short passing game and a top 10 defense(check the stats)

Really?

@Don Pickell IV –trade Julio? Really? Doing so now would assure we would have lost MORE by picking him last year as we did. There are several good rehab facilities in Atlanta. I’d check into one of these to get off whatever you are taking. Really.

Falcons 31-17 in this one… The falcons get bored and layoff as players. This has nothing too do with coaching and all too do with players knowing they are going too win. Atlanta play down too teams they know they are going too beat and play up too team they feel that are at their levels. Atlanta is still finding themselves on Offensive and Defense. Atlanta Falcons has not found the falcons and when they do in the Playoff this is where they will do the most damage. It does no good too come on this blog with the falcons situation when Atlanta has not been as good as they can be. This is a damages team and it all about players and injuries and getting control of the game mentally. Atlanta think they are better than the others so they play up too their level… I am happy about the 12-4 mark with a team that has not played up too there talents. Be real Georgia, this team will win in the playoff and win with style points too. 31-17 win over Tex, 34-10 over carolina, the next two weeks. Just chill and leave it alone and let them jell together

Not sure why everyone is discounting the Texans. Mario out, Schaub out, Leinart out, A. Smith out, Manning out, Johnson out.. etc etc. etc. They could have laid down a long time ago yet they still keep on winning. The Texans have a much more balanced team this year and if we take them lightly they are going to beat us. They are DEEP and it shows. They’ve always had the offensive weapons.. just this year is different since now they have a defense and no longer need the offense to bail them out. I think I would have rather faced Matt Leinart than TJ Yates personally but I wouldn’t sleep on the Texans.
