BYE WEEK VILLE – Just wanted to pass along this bye/vacation week nugget for you all before I get back to working on my golf swing.

The Falcons, the defending NFC South champs, may have already played the toughest part of their schedule. When they return to practice on Monday, they will have a clear “dome-field advantage” over their final nine games.

Since 2008, quarterback Matt Ryan owns an NFL-best 26-6 record (81.2 percent) in games played in domed stadiums.

The Falcons play seven of their last nine games in domes. They could play eight, because Houston’s stadium is retractable.

Here’s the schedule:

Nov. 6 — @Indianapolis — Lucas Oil Field (Dome)

Nov. 13 — New Orleans – (Georgia Dome)

Nov. 20 — Tennessee – (Georgia Dome)

Nov. 28 — Minnesota – (Georgia Dome)

Dec. 4 — @Houston – Reliant Stadium (Retractable)

Dec. 1 2–  @Carolina – Bank of America Stadium (outdoors)

Dec. 15 — Jacksonville – (Georgia Dome)

Dec.  26 — @New Orelans (Mercedes-Benz Superdome)

Jan. 1 — Tampa Bay (Georgia Dome)

For the very reasons the all-understanding D-Led has listed, I predicted 2 weeks ago that the Falcons would be sitting 11-3 going into the final two games against the division rivals.

So what? If they get into the playoffs, they will have to play like the BIG BOYS play. They don’t know how because of the coaches. We won the regular season last year with the 13-3 record. We have been there and done that! Let’s take the next step. An offense with a run, run on first and second down by MTurner then long pass on third down will not compete in the playoffs. We have been there before.

MB Superdome? That has to be an oxymoron because N.O. has the worst sight lines in the NFL with probably the oldest stadium. How could MB associate with such a classless fanbase with a getto attitude. They only buy 10 year old MB cars with colored oversized rims.

I will now wait for them to prove my point with their posts

Looking at that schedule…there’s no reason we should lose more than 2 games the rest of the way. I say we finish 11-5….I don’t care if we get a wildcard…how did that work out for Green Bay?

IND-w, NO-w, TEN-w, MIN-W, HOU-w, CAR-w, JAX-w, NO-l, TB-w 12-4, if this holds up and they play to their potential, coaches arent scared, dont make dumb calls, and pplay to win instead of playing not to lose. Mughelli is out so it’ll be interesting to see how the offensive philosophy changes. ( If it does)

I watched the Detroit game on NFL Network last night. I was struck by how many POINTLESS Turner runs up the middle we called. We put ourselves in 2nd and long and 3rd and long way too many times! It’s great that he is pounding the rock and he has the ability to bust a few, which boosts his per carry average … but we need to mix it up more on offense. We will not get playoff wins or reach the top of the NFC if this does not happen. Very impressed with our defense for the most part (got burned on the notorious soft cover a few times) and also special teams. Work on the offense. Go Birds.

Those “Pointless” runs are what set up the play action. Teams stack the box because they have to respect the run. A lot of those runs up the middle where with 8 or 9 guys in the box. We tried mixing it up at the beginning of the season and looked what happended? The last two games (Carolina and Detroit) we were very predictable and guess what? Teams still couldn’t stop us from doing what we wanted to do. Not every run is going to get you 4 or 5 yards. Those 2 or 3 yards you dislike are the runs that pound on a defense so that we can break for the big gains. Why do you think Turner got the big runs? He ran to the outside and that was possible only because the defense had to respect that the Falcons would try to run inside.

While MM is the OC, Smith is pulling the strings to the offense. If you saw the 1st drive we had in the redzone agaisnt the Lions MM had Rodgers in for a play, but Smith wanted to pound the ball with Turner and what happended? We had to settle for 3. I believe that MM is calling the game the way Smith wants to call it, just like in Chicago with Martz and Lovie Smith.

Big Dude

Terrell, How do you know Smith wanted to pound the ball with Turner? Who’s your source? Look at the enitre season and not one play… Two runs off left tackle and pass. One run off rt. guard, one run off left tackle, pass to T. G. C’mon man, even my wife knows whats coming…

Dome v. open stadium is misleading for the Falcons. What you should look at is natural grass v. turf. The Falcons are a much better team on artificial surface. They never seem to play well on grass. Several “domes” have natural surfaces. Arizona is natural and look what a bad game the Falcons had their in 2008. Seattle is open but has the same field surface found in the Georgia Dome and the Falcons seem to play well there. Houston is a dome with a natural grass field and that game worries me. Carolina will be no cake walk either. Looking at this remaining schedule 10-6 is about the worst one should expect but another 13-3 season is a real possibility. My guess is 12-4.

I agree that a good running game sets up the passing game. But, C’mon guys, a little diversity please… I can’t remember the last time I saw a screen, or a quick slant over the middle for a quick five yds. on first down. Even Van Gorder can come up with a good defense against us. Just saying…. Stop being so predictable and make the defenses question what’s coming…

Hasn’t anyone noticed that almost all of Turner’s long runs are when Ryan is calling the plays? When they huddle up and run the plays called by the OC, Turner leads the league in # of plays that result in a loss.

I think this is a very comforting fact to start the second half of the season with. The win against Detroit got our swagger back and we could witness the type of late season run that propelled the last several teams (Pittsburgh, The Giants, and Green Bay) to a Super Bowl finish.

Adam

October 27th, 2011
10:38 am

Terrell,
Just so you know, runs that only get 1 or 2 yards do not set up play action. If runs are going for that little yardage the Defense gets a little more brave and uses only 6 or 7 in the box. When you start gashing teams with 7,8,9 and then a big one of 18, play action is set up because the Defense has to bring someone else in the box to contain the run somehow. I.E. a Single Saftey Defense.

“Grind is not fine” when your 3 and out. There’s no ball control when the defense knows what your are going to do. If T.G. wasn’t on the team to throw to on third down, the Falcons would be just a typical “also ran team”. Just remember, he’s a free agent next season.

Wild Card at best! Don’t drink the kool-aid and be lured into believing this 12-4 crap. Saints schedule is every bit as easy and after their game at winless Rams, they will only have 3 road games remaining(at Falcons, at Titans, and at Vikings. Pinnacle Sports is paying nearly 4 to 1 on anyone other than Saints winning the division. The oddsmaker sees the Saints as the prohibitive favorite to win the division and I agree. The Falcons will have to sweep the Saints to have a chance to win the division, and that’s not going to happen.

Path to playoffs for Falcons is to go 5-0 in the dome (Saints, Titans, Vikes, Jags, Bucs) and 2-2 on the road (wins at Colts/Panthers and losses at Saints/Texans). This would put Falcons at 11-5 and clearly in the playoffs……wild card or division makes no difference – just get to the playoffs and anything can happen.

I don’t think 10-6 gets you in but 11-5 does…..Key will be beating Saints at home and Panthers on the road.

I see the rest of the season breaking out this way: We’ll go 3-1 vs. the AFC South, 2-2 in our remaining division games, and beat Minnesota in the other game. That brings us to 10-6 and then it all comes down to the tiebreakers, which could help us (head to head vs. Detroit and Philly) or hurt (vs. Tampa bay or if it comes down to conference record in a 3 way tie).

The 2011 All-Underachieving Team from season’s first half.

Don Banks over at Sports Illustrated wrote this and included 2 references about Atlanta Falcons.

“Offensive line — Atlanta Falcons: Rather than single out five players at five positions, I’m taking the easy way out and naming one underachieving offensive line as a unit, since they say cohesion and teamwork is more vital on the O-line than anywhere else in football. You’re not going to get much of an argument from anyone in Atlanta regarding the struggles of the Falcons up front this season. Atlanta’s line started the season by giving up 13 sacks in the first three games, and it had difficulty in run blocking at times as well.
There has been improvement shown of late on both fronts (18 sacks allowed in seven games, and two strong rushing games in a row by Michael Turner), but the Falcons line clearly hasn’t lived up to its billing this season. Left tackle Sam Baker, a former first-round pick, has been mediocre at best and steadily gave up sacks early on, and right tackle Tyson Clabo has graded out average. Right guard Garrett Reynolds has been an obvious weak link in replacing departed free agent Harvey Dahl, and the continuity factor took another hit when center Todd McClure missed the first two games after arthroscopic knee surgery and had to be subbed for by reserve Joe Hawley.”

“Defensive end — Ray Edwards, Atlanta: The Falcons were hoping they filled their need for another pass rusher to complement John Abraham when they signed Edwards away from Minnesota in free agency, giving him a five-year, $30 million contract that included $11.5 million guaranteed. So far, those hopes have been dashed.
Edwards went sackless in the first month of the season, and through seven games he has just two sacks and 18 tackles, which puts him on a pace that won’t equal his eight-sack season of 2010, or his 8.5 sacks in 2009. As one NFL personnel evaluator said to me this week: “(Falcons backup defensive end) Kroy Biermann is a better pass rusher than Edwards, who was never more than just a solid player in Minnesota. He just got paid like a top pass rusher.”

This season could be eerily similar to that of the 1980 season. The 1980 falcons were 3-3 and then won 9 straight games…finishing 12-4 that year. The schedule certainly looks favorable. I for one don’t think the Saints will beat us again at home this year and that game comes up in a couple weeks.

The best thing that could have happened to Atlanta this year was J Jones being out for a few weeks. It has enabled the offense to reclain there identity and to remove the pressure off of our rookie star. When Julio comes back though….I believe that this time…the Falcons will be even better.

Falcons will not win a super bowl with Matt Ryan. I’ve seen a lot of his games and he just doesn’t have it. The only way an average QB like Ryan can win a super bowl is with an above average defense. example: 2000 Baltimore Raven with Trent Dilfer and Tony Banks

Football was meant to be played outside!
The only concession should be to get a retractable dome for open air use for most of the beautiful fall season.
Superdome isn’t really much of an advantage for visitors. Although Falcons have had much success there.

This was what killed the Falcons last year as they secured the best record and “Dome Field” advantage. They began to talk about how they would be able to sleep in their own beds because they would be playing at home when all of a sudden, a green and yellow hurricane known as the GBPackers came blowing through ATL like General WTSherman!!! Hey Falcons, looks like you might have to go to Philly or more likely to the “Frozen Tundra of Lambeau Field” for the playoffs, so cut the “we play better at the Dome” campaign speech, ok???

SeenThisB4’s beloved Aints got their *ss handed to them by a team that had ZERO wins for the year. This is a CLEAR indicator that this team can LOSE at anytime, anywhere. This will hurt their confidence knowing that LOWLY Rams put them in their place.

On the other hand, the Falcons went on the road and defeated a TOUGH Detroit Lions team. The Lions went on to destroy the Bronco 45-3 on Sunday. The Lions are no fluke and the Falcons put them in their place on their home turf.

As happy as I am that the Saints lost yesterday, I hope the Falcons avoid a similar “trap” situation when they go to Indy. That is a really hungry team and we occasionally get a little cocky and play down, especially on the road … we need to attack and attack again, for 60 minutes, and beat the Colts soundly to set up our home match with the Saints. Get everyone healthy and play hard in the 2nd half of the season.

I’d like to know HOW the Aints are going to “dismantle” the Falcons considering they couldn’t do anything to stop the pitiful Rams. They certainly won’t be runnin their mouths on the field, because the Falcons players will just bring up the Rams game and laugh their heads off.

Deep down the Aints now KNOW they cannot be division champs. They lost against a winless team and now they will FEAR all teams, especially on the road.
