The Falcons and the Lions, two of the most penalized teams in the league in 2011, combined for 21 penalties in their raucous 23-16 affair last Sunday. AP
BYE WEEK VILLE – The Falcons committed 11 penalties for 80 yards against Detroit.
The Falcons are fourth in the NFL with 50 penalties. Last season they were the least-penalized team in the league with 57 infractions.
Detroit leads the league with 71 followed by Chicago (56), Washington (54) and Atlanta (50). Jacksonville and New England also have 50 penalties.
The Oakland Raiders, the perennial bad boys of the league, are eighth with 46 penalties.
The Falcons and the Lions combined for 21 penalties and 164 yards in that 23-16 smash-dancing fest last Sunday.
[Note to self. . . . make sure to ask Smitty what the bye-week "drill down" revealed about the 50 penalties in seven games.]

Why would this make us the Raiders of the NFC South? The Raiders aren’t known for a high number of penalties. Seriously, is this supposed to be an article?

I don’t think the Falcons are the Raiders of the south. I’m starting to see the Falcons put together a few wins and more guys are making plays, so this team as the season progresses will make the mistakes and penalty adjustments.

Orlando,
You probably should have clarified your comparison. You cannot assume everyone knows what the comparison is in reference too. All your article says is, “The Oakland Raiders, the perennial bad boys of the league, are eighth with 46 penalties.” Are readers supposed to know that you mean the Raiders are the most penalized team over the past few years by calling them the perennial bad boys?

Yes, the Falcons have committed a good number of penalties this year. But by this reasoning, you could say that the New England Patriots are also the Raiders of the AFC East. When you put it in that perspective, it looks like a silly statement. Twenty percent of the league has committed as many or more penalties as the Falcons. So, they are not ready to be crowned as the bad boys yet.
What I’d be curious to know, is how many of these penalties have been committed by new starters? Especially Garrett Reynolds, as it seems like he has drawn a lot of off-sides penalties (I believe he had at least 3 in the Detroit game.
What would make this article really useful would be to show the spread of penalties. What types of penalties are the Falcons committing the most? It has felt like there have been many more offensive off-sides and holding penalties by the offensive line and that this is what has hurt the Falcons the most this year.

@ DLed – Your problem wasn’t in the comparison of Falcons to Raiders, as it’s perfectly appropriate, as it regards penalties. The problem was that you put the word ‘perennial’ in the body of the article. Judging by a lot of the so-called ‘banter’ on these message boards, if you publish any word over two syllables you’re liable to lose at least half of the commenters.
Here…I’ll help translate:
“The Oakland Raiders, the perennial bad boys of the league, are eighth with 46 penalties.”
Translation: “The Oakland Raiders get a lot of penalties. It happens year after year. This year they are eighth in the league with 46 penalties.”

The heading does make sense to anyone who has cognitive learning ability!! I understand over the past years that the Raiders have been perennial leaders as the most penalized team in the NFL. The Falcons are well on their way to being the leaders this year, if they don’t quit making stupid mistakes. One big example is last week’s kick return when Weems was clearly headed for a touchdown, boom Antone Smith blocks a guy in the BACK 5 yards behind the play, bringing back a touchdown!

This must be a slow week in sports.
I’m not a Raider or Falcon’s fan, but the real Raiders would have started a fight if someone had treated their quarterback like Detroit did the Falcons. You think you could do that to Baltimore, Pittsburgh, or even New Orleans. There are a few true players on the Falcons’s team, but as a team, do they not have that “Killer Swagg” Defend your quarterback. I got a feeling that you will see Detroit again…………

50% of our penalties are due to our O-Line. We have good run blockers but some below average pass blockers who get twice as many holding calls as most teams.
Plus we started the season attempting deep pass plays that take longer to develop. We just didn’t have the pass blockers to play that style……..at least things are improving with that regard.
I can’t relate holding to being a “bad boy team.”
M. Johnson is hurt but has been dissapointment and Reynolds realy struggles vs. the pass.
My crystal ball has the 2nd and 3rd round picks of next year going to a G and TE.

After reviewing that play by Antone Smith, I think he was just running behind the play and the guy drifts over in front of him and slows down, causing Antone to run into him from behind. The officials should never have thrown a flag for that weak, completely innocuous contact.
And since the frist three really sloppy weeks of football, I thought we”ve done a better job with penalties. And as Jason mentioned above, the drill down will likely show that the o-line is skewing those numbers, as well as Roddy’s weekly unsportsmanlike.

Damn, looks like I’ve been a rancher all my life and just didn’t know it.
alt
The Montana Department of Employment, Division of Labor Standards claimed a small rancher was not paying proper wages to his help and sent an agent out to investigate him.
GOV’T AGENT: “I need a list of your employees and how much you pay them.”
RANCHER: ”Well, there’s my hired hand who’s been with me for 3 years. I pay him $200 a week plus free room and board.
Then there’s the mentally challenged guy. He works about 18 hours every day and does about 90% of all the work around here.
He makes about $10 per week, pays his own room and board, and I buy him a bottle of bourbon every Saturday night so he can cope with life.
He also sleeps with my wife occasionally.”
GOV’T AGENT: “That’s the guy I want to talk to – the mentally challenged one.”
RANCHER: “That would be me.”

AS – Umm yes i think thats what perennial means.. Every year.
Ok.. Im not mad at the falcons for playing with a mean streak. In the immortal words of Suge Knight “I’d rather be feared than loved because fear lasts longer.” Now that does not apply to every day life but in this situation I think the Falcons need to be feared. People need to know if they are gonna get the business every time they come around here. A few penalties.. So what. The message has been sent. And the nastier the better. Get after ‘em. do whatever needs to be done. After all this is “TACKLE” football and not tiddly winks or go fish..
I guarantee you this. When you play the Raiders you know you have to be ready for whatever and Im glad to see people are starting to fear the Falcons. Like Dunte might hit me really hard across the middle. Grimes will give his whole body up for a play. Peters is coming. Abe is Coming. Witherspoon is going to knock my block off. Lofton is gonna kill me.
All I need to see now is Turner break a few more arm tackles and instead of running out of bounds because a DB is in front of him.. Run his @$$ over. At Full speed. After a few of those DBs start getting out the way.

yes, that let you know that officiating can decide an outcome.i have been watching the falcons since 1968.i use to tell my father that certain games and teams, the officials don’t call fair for them.you can call a penalty on every play as an official if you really wanted to.its when the falcons are being penalized. for example, usually iin the second half if they are behind to a team who suppose to be better, the birds will mount a big drive or play only to see an official throw a flag to halt their progress.i see certain teams do the same thing and is hardly ever penalized.i keep harping on the green bay game.first half, the packers didn’t have a clue as how to stop the falcons offense. then came the second half.i told my grandson,i guess the officials figured something was wrong with the way they were officiating,. so it was obvious, that almost every call went against the falcons in the second half. they stalled the falcons offense by putting them in predictible situations for the packers.if they officials had called the game right, the falcons would have won by 2 tds. then everyone started questioning the falcon’s offense when it was obvious the men in the striped shirts were at fault.

Thought provokking comparison… however, I don’t see the Falcons as “bad boys” so much as just to sloppy a football team at this point. I know our guys are capable of much more and I expect that with additional work they will improve. The majority of the penalties have come from lining up offsides, poor blocking, not understanding what “blocking in the back” is and not remembering the snap count. Our team is better than this and I’m sure they all understand how detrimental these dumb penalties are to winning in the NFL. I have no doubt that our fine team of coaches and players will be working on this. They will soon be operating at a very high level when we see the penalties diminish.

I think the Falcons were (and still are) feeling the effects of no OTAs. Nobody else had OTAs either but some of the things we did well last year, such as protect Matt and limit penalties, are problems this season. With all the struggles, the Falcons are still only one game behind the Saints and one game behind where we were last season (5-2). C’mon, people, the Colts are next. 5-3 is inevitable going into the New Orleans home game.
Have some confidence in your team, folks. They’re one game out of first – don’t pack up your tent and go home, only to say “go Falcons” when they’re doing well. Just because we’re not scoring 62 points on an 0-7 team with their third-string QB is no reason to panic. Just because we’re not leading the league in every category you want them to doesn’t make our boys losers. Underachieving? Yes, but it’s early and we do have a favorable schedule coming up. I feel good about where the Falcons are right now, and that’s on an upward trend.

I’m not at all happy with all of these penalties this year, especially the drive-killing (or on defense, extending) ones. I don’t know who or what’s at fault; it may be that the Falcons underestimated the impact of the personnel changes on the lines especially, but it HAS to stop. I’m sure it has Mike Smith frustrated but he has to get this problem under control.

Nope. Falcons penalties are bonehead mistakes and poor play, very few to aggressiveness and excessive roughness, the type of penalties the Raiders have been known for. ie. Sam Baker holds because he get’s his lunch handed to him by most DE’s. He’s becoming another bust in a long list of Falcon 1st round busts.

Why is this guy a starter? And now with Johnson out we are stuck with him:
Courtesy of Pro Football Focus:
He’s no Harvey Dahl
Finances are finances, and in the condensed free agency period we had this year Harvey Dahl was able to escape Atlanta leaving the Falcons short on talent at the spot. Garrett Reynolds (-7.1) has replaced Dahl, only missing 14 snaps against the Packers, and has failed to play up to anywhere near the level of Dahl’s performances. This week against Detroit marked the sixth time he has graded negatively this season with this performance being comfortably his worst. He started badly by giving up a sack to Ndamukong Suh early in the first quarter, saved only by Suh trying to take Matt Ryan’s helmet off by the face cage, and followed that up with two further pressures (both to Suh). Of as much concern as anything else will be his trio of false start penalties, including two on back to back plays. Whether down to noise or the knowledge that he needed a good first step to match Suh, these were drive killers that the offense could do without as they pushed the Falcons out of field goal position and cost them points.
The Real Falcon

Is he hurt or what?
Courtesy of Pro Football Focus:
Missing tackles in bunches
This week’s game marked the fifth time in the last two seasons that William Moore (-1.9) has missed multiple tackles in a game. Not exactly what you’re looking for in a safety. Moore missed three tackles this week, two in the running game and one in the passing game, to mark his worst day tackling since he missed four in an abysmal performance last season in Tampa Bay. Not executing in this facet of play is a problem anywhere on defense but deep in the secondary it tends to lead directly to bad things and that was the case for Moore here. Pursuing an in route by Calvin Johnson late in the third quarter Moore failed to secure his tackle on the massive wide-out, falling off and allowing Johnson to scamper away to a 57 yard score. The coverage may not have been Moore’s but the missed tackle led directly to the score. The Falcons need much better security from him and right now he has failed to deliver on his draft stock for Atlanta.

But here we go.

Another rounded performance
A week after a spectacular interception on a screen Corey Peters (+2.2) came up with another strong all round showing, outshining his fellow defensive tackle Jonathan Babineaux. Peters was stout in run defense, providing difficulties for Rob Sims (standing him up on two occasions at the line, including the first snap of the game) and Dominic Raiola. Peters also showed that he is not only a load in the middle but, as with last week against the Panthers, flashed his ability in space. Last week he pulled off the interception, while this week he was able to cut down Matthew Stafford for a sack in the right flat on third & goal and then, most crucially, picked up a pass defense on the Lions final drive of the game that prevented a pass interference call on third down. The Falcons have been looking for some time for a player to go with Babineaux in the middle of their defense, so when Babineaux rediscovers his best form Atlanta could now have a fine pairing at tackle.

The Falcons will be lucky to get a wildcard spot. At 13 and 3 last year you get blown out in the second round of the playoffs with a bye week. Granted you got drilled by the eventual champion, so what chance does this team have to go any where. i am not drinking the Kool-Aid. We are just playing out the string. Playoffs….NOT THIS YEAR.

No predictions here, but against Detroit the Falcons looked tough. They were able to dish it out and take it to, and if this trend continues, they stand to make the playoffs two years in a row, and three out of the last four. Last year they played up to every team, but didn’t seem to scare anyone with their aggressiveness. That seems to be changing now, and taking some bloody noses early seems to have helped them. Remember, they’ve already played Green Bay, Chicago, Philly, Detroit, Tampa Bay, and only Philly has a losing record. They should finally be ready to step out on the big stage and impress some folks, which they didn’t do last year with a 13-3 record.

If the Falcons are perceived as the ‘bad boys’ of the NFC South, it is because of you guys in the sports media that play us that way. Tough hits don’t make a don’t make a dirty team. The new rules have put lace on NFL players to begin with. Beyond that, our only sin is the same one the Saints share; a formerly losing team that is winning.
The stereotyping is sickening.

And here’s the rest of the news: NFL investigators have uncovered this evening that the falcan’ts are still in third place, failing to move out of that position even though New Orleans lost early this afternoon. Said one NFL spokesman, ” Yes, the S a i n t s lost, but the falcan’ts are still mired in there own mediocrity and remain in third place in the NFC South, a position they will likely remain in for the rest of season.

This Saint loss is very familiar, in fact I have SeenThisB4. In the playoffs last season the Aints played a lousy NFC west team and got drilled. Still we have to endure the crazy ramblings of a miss-placed Saint fan in this Flacon forum. The Saints have the same division record as the Falcons, a worse conference record and their so called first place division standing is nothing more than bye week scheduling. I predict that SeenThisB4 and hiramsaint will soon need to remove the sack from their head and use it to catch the discharge spewing from their lips as the Saints fall out of contention. Then again they can just puke in the streets of the big sleazy, who would know the difference.
