Carolina rookie sensation Cam Newton on Sunday.

All-Pro defensive end John Abraham (groin) returned to practice on Friday and was given a 50-50 chance of playing by the team. He was limited in practice and listed as questionable on the team’s injury report. He did not play last week against Green Bay with the injury that was initially diagnosed as a hip injury. He’s tied with defensive end Lawrence Sidbury for the team lead in sacks with two.

Also, the offensive line could be at full strength. Center Todd McClure (knee) and guard Garrett Reynolds (ankle) returned to practice and were both listed as questionable.

Wide receiver Julio Jones (hamstring) and cornerback Christopher Owens (concussion) will not play against he Panthers. Safety James Sanders (hamstring) did not practice, but was listed as questionable.

Defensive tackle Jonathan Babineaux (knee), tight end Tony Gonzalez (elbow), defensive end Cliff Matthews (knee), safety William Moore (neck) and wide receiver Roddy White (knee) all fully participated in practice and were listed as probable.

Falcons will win. Remember, the Packers started 3-3 last season before winning the Super Bowl. All it takes is getting into the tournament. Then it’s anybody’s game. Just Win

We’ve got Matty Ice, and as long as the line blocks then we win. Won without Julio last year. Get back to the basics.

I hope we’re not dumb enough to rush DE JAbraham back too soon, because hamstring injuries need time to heal, and we need him down the stretch. After all, we did manage to sack QB ARogers 4 times last wk without him. At least 2 of those sacks were coverage sacks, when we were playing man to man and brought our CBs up, rather than playing them 8-10yds off the WRs.

ARogers wasn’t able to break our pass coverage and attack our CBs until Smitty/VanGorder decided to protect our 14pt lead, and against the NFLs most prolific OFF, by switching to their beloved soft cover 2 prevent zone.

EINSTEIN-The Packers were a solid Superbowl caliber team at the start of last season. They struggled at the beginning of last season because of an inordinate number of key injuries. The Falcons have struggled both offensively and defensively since the final gms of last season, including the playoffs and preseason.

The Falcons aren’t going to improve until they get a new engine(MSmith), battery(BVanGorder), transmittion(MMularkey), and a new tire or two(maybe a new QB and DB coach).

I agree with everything Ken Strickland says: 1) no need to bring Abe back early…certainly the biggest risk to his hamstring is chasing someone like Newton around—I hope Smitty is smart about this; 2) that zone the Falcons run, too often without their getting immediate pressure on the QB, is a gift to QBs—OTOH, BvG knows what his guys can do (and not do) in man coverage. We sort of lose either way on this. Still, I agree…we’re worse in the zone than in anything else, unless we’re opposing a QB whose accuracy is as bad as Matty Ice’s.

What happened last year? Played with minimum of penalties, mistakes and injuries and squeaked their way to 13-3. It was fun, I’ll admit it, but once again I was mistaken to think this franchise was going to solid and stable for years to come. Been watching since 1980 so I ain’t going anywhere. Keeps me humble. Falcons by 3 over Carolina.

@ greg- agreeing with kenneth is a ticket to nowhere. he has been consistantly wrong all season and in the offseason about what his failclowns were doing and what they were going to do . he has also been absolutely wrong on another certain team about what they were gonna do and where they would be right now. agree with him if it suits you but remember , he has been-is-and ever shall be- wrong. The game plan (coaching) is not the problem
The QB is not the Problem
The RB is not the Problem
The problem is line play on both sides of the ball. The O-Line is the main issue. The run game and the passing game are suffering because the line play is awful.
Sam Baker is the worst offender but we have not replaced Dahl adequately and the injury to McClure has been crucial.

Let’s not turn on our team like the Eagles’ fans or those who covered their heads with paper bags. Chargers’ fans have lived through several slow start seasons up to this year; yet they supported their team. Bills’ fans have suffered for decades but supported their teams. It’s time for the true Falcons’ fans to Rise Up!!!

The Packers nearly missed the playoffs last year because of injuries, but, they fought through it and battled to the end. I feel this team is suffering the same fate and only time will tell if we persevere. I think we will because good teams do not quit on a saeson and this is a good team. This team held Green Bay to their lowest point production of the year with a banged up DLine and patched up secondary. The turnaround starts Sunday against Carolina. I truly feel that as we get our players healthy we will get stronger and stronger with each game. The Falcons are about to go on a roll and turn this thing around.

Abraham is 50/50 for the game…its less than for the rest of the Falcons showing up, say 20/80…C’mon Man!

Let me tell you who going to be there…CAM’s going to be there…he is showing up as a rookie.

Number 4 rated passer in the NFL. He is 111 yards behind the Number 3 passer Aaron Rodgers. Cam was #3 passer, but we gave up 396 yards to Aaron Rodgers last week and we think we played good defense since we held them to only 25 points…C’mon Man!

Weatherspoon & Lofton are going to show up. They have 48 & 47 tackles for the season. DeCoud & Grimes have 25 & 24 tackles. Next tied at 22 tackles each is Robinson & Moore. Only one lineman through 5 games has double digit tackles, guess who, with 12 Ray Edwards. Everyone else that plays defense is in single digits. So why all the fuss whether Abraham plays with 8 tackles & 2 sacks (gm 1…C’mon Man!

Have you noticed 2nd & 3rd level defenders having to make all the tackles, which indicates the D-line is taking on water. Cam will exploit them because they will max protect and he will pick them apart.

Jay Cutler(#16), Josh Freeman (#18), Tavaris Jackson(#21)& Rodgers (#4) all threw over 300 yards against this defense, no pressure on QB, so with max protection, meaning they keep a running back in & 2 TE, with only one wide out, Cam will have time to throw or run. He threw for over 400 yards in his first pro game…could he Cam get 500…maybe,…C’mon Man!

This brings me to the number 12 passer Matty Icedown. In five games he has completed only 61.2% of his passes. 7 TD (4 Gonzalez, 2 Roddy & 1 Ovie. Julio is flat out ballin and he can’t get in the endzone because Ryan is the only one who can shut him down…longes pass play only 49 yards. Poor Julio had to fair catch one his passes two weeks ago…C’mon Man!

Bosher & Weems who…C’mon Man!

For those of us who have not noticed-very few teams are playing good defense. Good defense is a thing of the past in this Fantasy Football League with Fantasy Football Rules. I never said the Falcons played good defense against the Packers…I said they played better than any defense they have played thus far. So, what does that tell you. Stats are impressive, but, what counts are wins and losses. Despite all the impressive stats the Panthers are 1-4. That’s all that matters. It will be important for Falcons defense to stay in their gaps and not over pursue. A few turnovers and we are 3-3 and starting our roll. You guys want to be glass is half-empty fans that is your business…do not jump back on the bandwagon once the turnaround starts.

Firsttimer and JayCool 4DABirds……..This isn’t a good football team! It’s not awful, but not going anywhere this season. We hear all this garbage about “too much talent”……Where?…..outside of the pass catchers(White, Jones, Douglas, Gonzalez), this team isn’t overly talented anywhere. Neither line is any better than average……linebackers and back end aren’t either. The QB is serviceable, as are the running backs, but nothing to write home about, and the special teams and depth are below average. The Falcons need to upgrade many areas including both lines, but how does that happen when you have no draft picks next year. I think this is a much bigger mess than most fans care to admit!
