FLOWERY BRANCH — Falcons wide receiver Julio Jones has a hamstring injury and will not play against Carolina on Sunday, head coach Mike Smith said on Wednesday.

Also tight end Tony Gonzalez (elbow), safety William Moore (shoulder), right guard Garrett Reynolds (ankle), defensive end John Abraham (hip/groin), center Todd McClure (knee) and cornerback Christopher Owens (concussion protocol) all did not practice on Wednesday.

Jones has 25 catches and leads the team with 358 yards receiving after five games.

“He’ll be out this week,” Smith said. “We hope to get him back. He worked out with our training staff today.  He did some running around. He’s already back out on the field working. We are hoping that after this week, we’ll get him back the following week.”

Wide receiver Harry Douglas will step into the starting lineup for Jones. Douglas has 11 catches for 80 yards this season. Wide receivers Eric Weems and Kerry Meier will aslo get some action against the Panthers.

“We feel very good about Kerry Meier and his athletic ability,” Smith said. “We haven’t run a lot of four-wide sets so he has not had the opportunity to get a lot of snaps, but he’ll get an opportunity this week.”

Let’s see now, another one of my 10 reasons why the falcan’t would fail this year has come to pass. I said that Julio Jones would go down to injury, as your number ones normally do,But, I did say it would happen before the beginning of October, I was off a week.

Remember this?:

______________________________________________________________________________
10. Michael Turner has lost a lot of his speed, your run game will not be as strong as it was last year.
9. Tony Gonzalez has gotten even older and slower. His diminishing capability was well documented by his stats as the year wore on last year; expect more of the same, except sooner.
8. Your 1st round draft choices always get injured; expect Julio to be out for a prolonged period with an injury, before the start of October.
7. You got zip, nada for Jerious Norwood, at least the Saints got a player and a pick for Reggie.
6. Roddy White’s production won’t be sustained this year, even the number of targets his way are already going to be down with Ryan trying to spread the ball around, albeit unsuccessfully.
5. You will split your series with Tampa Bay.
4. Ray Edwards has a gimpy, surgically repaired, questionable knee. Abraham will quickly find out that, not only is he not the missing piece, but he’s the wrong piece altogether.
3. Mike Malarkey’s offensive play calling is as predictable as the sun rising in the east.
2. Matt Ryan is not an elite QB.
1. You’ll get beat twice by The New Orleans Sa i nts.

KEEP CHOPPING WOOD: Article by Daniel Cox. “The Falcons may be 2-3 but they’re among the leaders in the league in a very important football stat: scoring in the red zone. Atlanta has shown a penchant for putting the ball in the end zone when they get close and an accomplishment like that goes a long way toward putting wins on the board and getting where they want to go.” Keep drives going, that’s easier said than done.

@Run4ever. The reason the Falcons are good in the red zone is Matt Ryan only have the throw the ball 10 yards which is the strongest part of his game!

Newton just thinks he has thrown good yardages wait until Sunday he will throw for more yardages in is NFL start with the Falcons than any other team on the schedule unless he break is on record the next time we play them. Have fun newton throwing all that yardages and TD’S.

Seems unlike Smith to announce that a player won’t be available this early in the week. While he makes it sound like he is likely for the following week, I’m guessing that Julio misses at least 2 games with the hamstring injury.

No defensive pass rush. No coverage by the DBs. No rushing yards. No quarterback that leads. No coaching, they stand there with a blank look on their faces. The Falcons can call this season a bust.Hopefully we can get some toughness on the offensive line and a pass rush from Target, they are all on sale.

The Falcons will not lose Sunday, instead they will welcome Mr. Newton by smashing his face into the turf at the GA Dome. JJ’s injury is due in part to the lack of off season workouts and conditioning. There are other players that can take the field, like HD and given the chance they can contribute. All the Falcons have to do is spread the ball around, Carolina is not that good, all they have is S. Smith and the untried QB Newton. Falcons 34 Panthers 6. Five games is not the season.

Never understood why the the other depth chart wideouts don’t play more anyhow.

ijonathan

Prescription for victory:
1) either 4-wide sets or 2 wr/2RB sets. Out of those formations, send Meier and Roddy mid range (and occasionally deep for RW), TG underneath for a safety valve and run HD up and down the field until he pukes.
2) From those formations, run slants, screens, mis-directions, counters and sweeps in the run game, and play action to AT LEAST 5 meaningful deep balls. Even if we only hit a couple of those, or even ONE of those, that is an improvement.
3) DO NOT employ 2 TE + FB, run formation sets where you pound Turner up the middle on first down. Forget it. Time for trickeration. This is desparation football.

Now, I have no earthly clue what kind of defense Carolina plays or what their respective strengths and weaknesses are on defense…but I don’t care. As others have said, forget the “we’ll take what the D gives us” mentality and DICTATE the action. Do you think New England or Green Bay or New Orleans or heck even Detroit sit around like little girls and worry about what the D is going to do?

It’s time to euthanize some little kitties on Sunday.

CGD, any big time QB or a QB that aspires to be big time would look at this as the opportunity of a lifetime. We all know that the run game is probably going to be de-emphasized, as defenses force Matt to beat them. Now it will be tougher that Julio is out, but that should be more incentive. If Matt can carry the offense for a few weeks and keep their playoff hopes alive, he may win back a lot of fans who, like me, are growing increasingly tired of him.

Conversely, if he doesn’t perform, he is forever done in this town. Heck, even Steven “Steak” Shapiro has started to lose faith in him a bit.

ATL is 23rd in rushing. Green Bay is 22nd. Somehow, Green Bay’s QB still manages to play well despite the lack of running game. And don’t give me the o-line excuse either. Brees(11) and Rodgers(11) have been sacked almost as many times as Ryan(13), yet they still produce. Matt Ryan needs to step it up or he is going to get his coach and staff fired.

Big Ray::::: Saints took it on the chin in Seattle….we had a lot of key injuries and it got worse as the game progressed…most Falcon fans enjoyed that way too much…..BUTT…the Saints came back this year winning games 4-1.

The Greenbay Packers came to town last year in the playoffs and plucked every feather and sent every fan home in the 3rd quarter and you haven’t been the same team since. Cinderella’s slipper has broken and the Fortunate Falcons are bottom feeders again.
