We'll get an official Julio Jones injury update on Wednesday. Falcons wide receiver Julio Jones heads to the locker room, leaving the game in the second half after being roughed up by the Packers. Curtis Compton / ccompton@ajc.com
FLOWERY BRANCH — Falcons wide receiver Julio Jones has a hamstring injury and will not play against Carolina on Sunday, head coach Mike Smith said on Wednesday.
Also tight end Tony Gonzalez (elbow), safety William Moore (shoulder), right guard Garrett Reynolds (ankle), defensive end John Abraham (hip/groin), center Todd McClure (knee) and cornerback Christopher Owens (concussion protocol) all did not practice on Wednesday.
Jones has 25 catches and leads the team with 358 yards receiving after five games.
“He’ll be out this week,” Smith said. “We hope to get him back. He worked out with our training staff today. He did some running around. He’s already back out on the field working. We are hoping that after this week, we’ll get him back the following week.”
Wide receiver Harry Douglas will step into the starting lineup for Jones. Douglas has 11 catches for 80 yards this season. Wide receivers Eric Weems and Kerry Meier will aslo get some action against the Panthers.
“We feel very good about Kerry Meier and his athletic ability,” Smith said. “We haven’t run a lot of four-wide sets so he has not had the opportunity to get a lot of snaps, but he’ll get an opportunity this week.”

Any of you moron’s that think the Falcons have a chance against Carolina don’t know your *&&(^^*%$%&$ from a hole in the ground!!!
Carolina by 27..remember..you heard it here!!
Carolina is the best “worst” team in the division..they have played lights out football with the new head coach and Cam Newton..Sure, they came up a little short in points..But hey..they came close!!
Not so for the dastardly Falcons..Not only does the coaching staff not have a clue..neither do the Birds..Case Closed! CAROLINA BY A LOT!!!!!!

Apparently Julie Jones being out is going to deny democracy, or fundamentally transform America, or something…

IT’S NOT LIKE MULARKEY WAS UTILIZING JULIO’S SKILL SET TO THE FULLEST ANYWAY! FORGET ABOUT A.J. GREEN, THAT ROOKI WR IN BALTIMORE, TORREY SMITH HAD 3TD CATCHES IN ONE GAME! THEY TARGETED THEIR NUMBER ON CHOICE! SO, WAS IT MATT RYAN’S FAULT OR MULARKEY? JUST SLAM MICHAEL TURNER IN THERE 30-35 TIMES AND TAKE OUR CHANCES! AT LEAST WE KNOW THAT WORKS! FORGET ABOUT THAT EXPLOSIVE B.S.!

Look guys as mediocre as the Falcons are, they are still better than Carolina. Cam maybe be playing well but the Panthers are still losing because their defense is lousy. Birds will win by at least 10 points.

Oh yeah and Saints R.E.A.M.
Do I really need to remind you that your team lost to a 7-9 Seattle team in the playoffs. Hey look: Marshawn Lynch just clowned your defense again!

i have never seen the type of so called fans and sports writers as in the city of atlanta.its only 5 games into the season and mark bradley is already calling the falcons season a failure.last time i checked, theNFL has 11 weeks left plus the playoffs.atlanta fans along with bradley seems to love to see the team lose so they can have negative things to talk about. the falcons will win and make the playoffs.i wish we had fans like seattleand stlouis. despite losing, they support their teams. if i was a pro-athlete in atlanta i would be hard pressed to get up to play for fans who always think evil.the saddest thing i saw was in the green bay game, so called atlanta fans cheered for a packer player then chatted his nickname.that never happens in no other city but atlanta cause of mark badley and negative fans

I love Douglas and I feel he will step up, but I have preached, yelled and screamed, we need to either go get T.O. or Randy Moss. We have only three wide receivers and two have injuries, White and J. Jones.
Please listen…Go get another WR. What if something happens to R. White. We are doomed. We must go sign T.O. or Randy Moss now!!!!!!!!!!

A few years from now we will look back on the Julio Jones trade as the begginning of the downfall of this Falcons administration. Starting to look like the Browns are gonna have a pretty high Falcons first round draft choice next year. We gave away 5 draft picks for someone who got us 16 yards in receiving in the biggest game of the year so far….and now he’s gonna be sittin’ in the hot tub for a key division game….sad

the fans and mark bradley should visit there also, along with you.i just hate falcons bandwagon fans should go to green bay. most fans wouldn’t know to act if the falcons start winning. it will us when they win and them when they lose.why would youstart a column and all things, rip your home team unneccary.haven’t thought that if we fans get behind our falcons and make a loud georgia dome just the seahawks, the winnig would come.we need to be true fans and not bandwagon fans.theb falcons will despite bad officials as was the cash sunday night.fans get behind the falcons. we are the 12th man and can fireup the falcons to push them over the hump. if my home crowd is against me along with bradley waiting for the team to lose so bradley and the band wagon fans. we are pathetic as falcons fan. they don’t know how to stand behind the team.they are constantly pulling for the team to lose so they be be critical and negatve

I have been a Falcons fan for years. I have gone to 75% of the home games in the last 10 years. I stood by the Falcons through a lot. And for the first time, I will stay home this Sunday by choice. I will not continue to give this franchise my money and support when the things they need to fix are so blatantly clear. Cut Bosher, Robinson, and get rid of Mularkey. Stop with the first down Turner run every single time. Ryan, quit palying like you are scared. And dang it Falcons, act like you want it. Until you get your heads out of your a^%, then I will be boycotting spending money on a ticket. How about the Falcons players and coaches “Rise Up” before you ask your fans to?

Come on Falcon fans, they trying hard, we’ve had a lot of change to the offense and they are trying to gel, yeah they didn’t expect 2-3, and we didnt expect that either. We know what makes this machine go, it starts with the lines…….. The line coach needs to bring in help this year soon! That specializes on this type of offense run by the falcons!!! we just got a longer learning curve due to the lockout, and i mean owners of teams keeping up with players, and their workouts……

The Falcons are a much stronger team than the Panthers. We don’t have to have Julio Jones to beat them. Let him rest up for tougher teams. “GO FALCONS”!

maybe the Falcons will start Rodgers instead of Turner and get some speed in the backfield. maybe Mularkey will throw some screen passes to Quizz to slow down the pass rush. maybe they will throw some quick slants on 3rd and 4, instead of throwing an incomplete pass 30 yards down the field. maybe they will spread the formation, instead of bunching everyone together, then running Turner right into the pile. maybe Roddy White will catch the ball this week. maybe we will play some man coverage, instead of playing the dreaded soft zone that let Seattle rip them apart in the 2nd half. maybe dunta robinson will actually defend a pass. maybe we will rush more than 3 guys on passing downs. maybe we will call on another punter who can kick the ball more than 36 yards per kick. maybe mike mularkey will call in sick on sunday.
Tell it like it is.

This teams problems began with QB,and go down hill from there! the falcons have no line play on eather side of the ball,no pass rush,no pass blocking on offence,no coaching. The cats from carolina should have a field day with the Falcons, with Steve Smith catching all those td pass’es from Newton. If you thank this is a playoff team right now,you must be out of your mind,it takes a QB,and line play to win in the NFL,we don’t have eather at this time.

Well, the Z51 is turning back into a Honda Accord again…that is actually not a bad thing against the panthers. Falcons typically play well after a loss and this will be a great case for circling the wagons. Go back to run, run, 3rd down completion and keep Newton off the field. The defense will continue to play with desperation…should be a 26-17 type of game with the defense scoring a TD.

Ryan can not throw a deep pass, Meir was a quarterback before making him a receiver in college. MM have him throw a deep pass to White or Douglas. When you were with the Steelers you would do things like that each game. MM is it you that don’t want too try this or coach Smith don’t want this done?

I’ve read Falcoholic comments on the poor blitzing performance this year. I’d love to see Biermann’s 6-3, 260 pounds of muscle blitzing from the MLB spot. He’s got LB speed with a lineman’s strength.
I expect he’d plow right through the QB’s backfield protection.

I don’t believe Julio Jones, has all those yards, he still having proved himself to me. I like Roddy White and Harry Douglas, they have so many wide receivers they can use instead of the same two, White and Jones, they might do better if they use them more.

I am not convince that Julio Jones have all those yards, he has not proven himself to me. I like Harry Douglas and Roddy White much better, now if Matt could just throw to them and not at them. Also they have more than two wide receivers, they need to use all of them at least a quarter, I promise you the other teams will not key in on them and they can get some yards and maybe we can win more games. Use your second and third string to confuse the opponents, they will not expect it.
