By Chris Vivlamore

The Packers felt slighted by the Falcons, even after Sunday night’s 25-14 victory.

Green Bay players haven’t forgotten offseason comments made following last year’s playoff game at the Georgia Dome, which the Packers won en route to their Super Bowl championship. The Falcons left the perception that they were the better team last season.

“Now that we abused them, for the second time in a row, at their home, there’s nothing really to do,” Packers defensive lineman B.J. Raji told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel following Sunday night’s win. “If they want to play us again, tell them to come up to Lambeau [Field]. That’s it. That’s how we’re doing it.”

Raji said he didn’t consider the Falcons a rival, despite Atlanta’s regular-season victory last season.

“They have a long way to go,” Raji said. “For it to be a rivalry, you have to win meaningful games. They’re just another opponent. They have a long way to go. I wouldn’t talk like this, but when people don’t respect you, I don’t take it lying down. Those people don’t respect us, so, in turn, I’m not going to give them any respect.”

I’m glad he said it. The Falcons need to realize that games aren’t played on paper, and to be respected as a force in the league, you have to make plays and execute for 4 full quarters each and every game.

He isn’t fat; he has extremely large bones made of Adamantium.

Besides, he has the same body type as Michael Turner. Only problem is, he’s not a RB, and he’s faster than Turner these days.

***Bulletin Board Material***
BJ Raji says,
“Great teams don’t indulge in the kind of cheap stuff the Falcons do,” Raji said. “We’re the champions and we play that way. We walk away from the stuff they pull. These guys are coached to play after the whistle.

“I don’t know what the deal is. I think it’s a lack of talent on their part. We didn’t worry about any of that. We came out and played our game.”

Harsh words, but the Packers had a right to crow after the game. They scored 25 unanswered points to embarrass the Falcons less than a year after blowing them away, 48-21, in the divisional playoff round at the Georgia Dome. Perhaps the Falcons are getting a bit too frustrated at their inability to get past the Super Bowl champs.

He is allowed to tip the scales at 500 lb as soon as his career is over.

That’s his God-given right as an American, and frankly I think he’s capable of doing it by the age of 38. Don’t underestimate him.

Of course, he’ll have 5 or 6 rings by then, which is fine by us. The GB coaching staff has him convinced the opposing team has a cream filling, like a Twinkie. Genius. You could learn a thing or two from this fat tub of Awesomeness.

The Falcons have little in the way of veteran leadership on the team and it shows on the field in how they play and some of the continuing dirty shots we see every week by our D. It reflects on the coaching staff which seems to have produced a defensive squad with a higher than average number of thugs.

The draft decisions to get Julio were foolish. Nothing on JJ, we just had bigger needs to fill and now those needs are gaping holes and have doomed us to a season or two of mediocrity.

The called back completion and the holding call were terrible calls by the refs. BUT. The offense (including Mularkey) are playing terrible ball and often leave the defense on the field far too long. The D actually played a far better game than I expected. Too bad the offense let them down. They need to let Ryan call his own plays or give the play calling duties to somebody else. The play calling has been poor and only sporadically successful.

Been a Falcon fan 42 years and counting–looks like a typical Falcon team to me. QB can’t make throws under pressure and can’t create his own opportunities, no running game, defensive backs getting burned long as well as short, pressure on the opposing QB at a minimum–just overall inept after the first blush of energy wanes. Agree with Fabian 100%.

HAHAHA! Make all the jokes you want about Raji, but the simple fact is he is a BETTER player than ANYONE that is on the Falcons roster. How many studs do you have on your DL that play multiple positions (DE and DT), not to mention do both of them very well? All why playing 85-90% of the snaps? Um-huh, I thought so…
Also, this article was entirely out of context; no mention at all of what motivated his remarks. Here are some from another source, apparently ignored by your home newspaper:
“Much of Raji’s distaste for the Falcons comes from receiver Roddy White’s comments during the off-season that his team was better than the Packers as well as some other slights Raji accused them of, including coaches not shaking the hand of one of the team’s priests after the divisional playoff loss.

Whether it happened the way Raji said it did is anyone’s guess, but that was the mentality many of the Packers’ defenders took into this game. They thought the Falcons had only so much to offer before the Packers’ talent would take over.”

So, in summary, if your players were as good on the field as they are at running their mouth, you would be a better team.

They have a long way to go,” Raji said. “For it to be a rivalry, you have to win meaningful games. They’re just another opponent.

Guys, Guys, Guys! This is a tough league, and a very streaky league. We still have a long way to go. We could win the next five, and GB could lose the next five. That would make us 7 and 3 and GB 5 and 5. I’ve seen stranger things in the NFL, haven’t you? We did play a horrible second half, didn’t we. And this game was totally different than the beat down we took in the playoff loss last year. And yes, I think we are a bit overrated, because we are not playing up to our potential…..no pass rush, and the miscues from Matty to his receivers. But you plug a hole here and there, next thing you know, you string together five wins in a row, and the whole season looks good again. All we want to do is get into the playoffs, anything can happen after that.

I couldn’t agree more with Mr Raji. Point made and should be well taken. Roddy needs to shut his mouth til we show up every Sunday like Champions. Offense has been down right ugly this season. While I’m not a fan of trash-talking from either side (I think there’s something to be said for showing and teaching good sportsmanship, which in pro leagues has become more and more a rarity in recent years), the essence of Raji’s remarks holds true. Now I don’t know whether the Falcons really thought or said they were the better team, especially after that game last January, but the notion of not paying ANY NFL playoff team a decent amount of respect is ludicrous.

All that aside, the Falcons DO need a wake-up call; right now they DO (still) have a LONG way to go to be a truly elite team…and even the casual observer can clearly tell it goes beyond merely the talent they have on the field. It’s an approach and philosophy built around a comparatively low number of plays and schemes which has repeatedly shown to be vulnerable and has difficulty adjusting to changing conditions in games. It’s a team that seems to think 30 minutes of solid offensive production and relying on your defense the rest of the way is good enough to win, as opposed to making a statement every single game and burying your opponents. The Falcons may yet finish the season with a winning record perhaps, but without a killer instinct and a justified confidence they’ll never rise above being a team that their frustrated fans vent about in the AJC forums…kind of like the Braves in that respect.

From a Packer blog in the Milwaukee newspaper: “I didn’t hear anything in the commentary, but you could clearly hear the chants of “GO PACK GO” during the 4th quarter. The stands were basically empty of Atlanta fans by the middle of the third quarter and it only got louder after they left.

Awesome to see us take their best shot in the jaw and just stand there looking them in the eye as to say, “That’s it? That’s all you got?” and then just pummel them into submission and send them home like crybabies on a schoolyard getting beat up.

Absolutely love the resolve of this team and how no one panics and everyone just steps up when needed. We have clearly established a pattern of behavior that bodes well for the future!

It’s really sad that the game between the Packers and Falcons have come down to this! I am a Atlanta fan but I do to some agree with the Packer player. Until Atlanta finds it within themselves to become one as a team, and win, then they deserve and are going to be considered a second class team by other teams in the NFL and sports media.

I still believe that they can turn this thing around. But they too include, the coaching staff which must quit making excuses and produce. Atlanta looks weak making these excuses and stating they need to find a way to fix the problem.? Too me, it seems like they have no clue as to what to do.Their mantel has really been rattled and sometimes when your back is against the wall, you either come out fighting or you just give in!

It will be interesting to see how they respond ?

I know zero about players and how to accurately judge if they are at a level to be in a position or not, but I know what I see, and it seems too me, the offensive line isn’t working as one. I believe the rookie ( Baker) is struggling and not ready.

I believe although Matt Ryan will not admit it, He is nervous about his blind side . Seeing Ryan’s eyes on television during the game while trying to find receivers, shows him totally uncomfortable with his outside (blind side) protection.

The defense played well and I’m extremely impressed with the effort Sidbury game in the game!
The usual suspects gave it their all and this fan thanks you. You know who you are in shows in your play and your stats.

I really hate it when people use the term “Fair weather fans” when it comes to any Atlanta team. What many fail to realize is that Atlanta is a city full of transplants from places here or there and tend to root for the teams close to where they may have originated. Second, of all the years of pro sports in this town has only produced one championship (95′ Braves)…and we all saw the writing on the wall at the end of the season for them this year. I happen to be a transplant living in NYC and still root for the home team and had season tickets for several years and recently digressed to a more realistic means to support by getting the NFL ticket to watch the Falcons. Unless you have truly been an Atlanta pro sport team fan over the past 25-30 years; I really don’t think you know understand….

Talk about selective editing. Ledbettor why don’t you quote Raji and the other Packers who were rally ticked off by the cheap play of the Falcons. “Great teams don’t indulge in the kind of cheap stuff the Falcons do,” Raji said. “We’re the champions and we play that way. We walk away from the stuff they pull. These guys are coached to play after the whistle.

@cdog: The Green Bay Packers have won 13 NFL championships including 4 Super Bowls in 5 tries. How many Super Bowls have you won? Oh, that’s right, your next one will be your first. That’s what they play the games for, not the regular season record. Your 13-3 record you had last year doesn’t mean a thing. WOW So much anemosity, so little class. As an avid Packer fan for over 50 yrs, this blog reminds me of the Packer LEAN years of the 70’s and 80’s. In those years the Pack tried everything and I mean everything to turn a once proud franchise back into a winner. Based on my observasions, it ALL starts at the top. 1. Owner 2. GM 3. Head Coach Without all three working as one, NO team will ever win constantly. In my humble opinion the Packers have all three while unfortionately the Falcons are struggling in one, or two, or perhaps all three areas.
As for BJs comments. A big deal was made about the disrespect the Falcon players displayed after that playoff loss and I think Bj was just blowing off a little steam. IMHO Go Pack

I love the Falcons…always have and always will, BUT I have absolutely no problem with what Raji said because it is the TRUTH. There is a mentality on this team that is lacking IMHO. There is no killer instinct that I can detect, and that starts with your HC. They are never looking for ways to put away a team because their philosophy (i.e. what is drilled into the players’ each and every team meeting and practice) is that ALL games come down to one or two crucial plays. Do you really think elite teams have that philosophy? Elite teams come into a game playing themselves and EXPECTING that they will be able to do what they want to do. These Falcons routinely play to their level of competition and then get out-coached and out-executed as the game wears on by top-tier teams. You have one of the top-paid WR in the game that keeps you in suspense as to whether or not he’s gonna catch the ball. You have a LT that constantly looks lost in space. You have an OC that is committed to the run……which by the way I have no problem with EXCEPT for the fact that it is MUCH more important When you run the ball than how many times you run the ball. The plays themselves are not bad, but the situational play-calling is atrocious. Then you have a HC that made a statement in another article that “We’ve got to be able to sustain drives to be able to run the football.”
WHAT????
Shouldn’t that be the other way around? Shouldn’t you need to be able to run the ball IN ORDER to sustain drives?

For all of you that think it lies more on the QB than the OC…..How did Drew Brees do before he got under Sean Payton? And remember, he had LT running behind him @ SD.

Did Kurt Warner ever perform in AZ at the level he did under Mike Martz in STL? Now we’re seeing Matt Stafford do some incredible things under Martz as well. Your OC/QB coach has a huge impact on the effectiveness (or lack thereof) of your team’s offense.
The truly great coaches have a system, BUT they are able to tailor it to their personnel. I haven’t see that to this point from this staff.

All I’m saying is everything rises and falls with leadership…

Another thought…..If Mularkey was so great, why didn’t Pittsburgh hold on to him or offer him the HC position when Cowher retired? And exactly how well did Kordell Stewart perform under Mularkey. His lack of creativity is hamstringing this offense. His quote that the running game “has worked for 3 years” is true, BUT it avoids the issue…..IT AIN’T WORKING NOW!!!

There needs to be a change there, and if the HC can’t make the right call, then maybe that needs to be evealuated as well.
