FLOWERY BRANCH  – Before All-Pro wide receiver Roddy White could be asked by Aaron Rodgers’ comments about the Falcons being “borderline” disrespectful” after last year’s 48-21 playoff thrashing, the interview was cut short by the teams’ communications staff.

White said he had three minutes to chat, but 1:57 into the three minutes, a staff member gave another member of the staff a sign to step in and cut off the interview.

We were told he had to “go to a meeting” during what’s supposed to be the open locker room time to meet the media.

White’s not shy and he would have addressed the comments. It seems that the Falcons have orders to shut White up over the matter. (FIRST AMENDMENT!!!)  White’s his own man and probably can’t wait to tell us all about what he thinks of Rodgers’ perceived slight.

Stay tuned  . . . .

NOTEBOOK ITEM By Chris Vivlamore: Green Bay quarterback Aaron Rodgers recently stated that some Falcons’ comments this offseason, following the playoff loss, were “borderline disrespectful.”

Roddy White was quoted as saying: “We were a better team than those guys. We went out there, and we didn’t perform at our highest level.”

Rodgers addressed the issue when asked by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution during his conference call with reporters Wednesday.

“I don’t care to expand a whole lot on that,” Rodgers said. “I just think that some of the general comments that I heard that that game was kind of a fluke maybe. I would just say that I think you need to respect your opponents. We definitely respect the Falcons.

“We were fortunate enough to go down there and play a clean game. I just felt like that maybe the respect level, just as far as those comments were concerned, maybe weren’t there at times.”

The following are excerpts from Green Bay quarterback Aaron Rodgers’ conference call with the Atlanta media Wednesday in preparation for Sunday night’s game against the Falcons.

Q. What have you seen four games in from the Falcons defense?

A. They are 2-2 but they are playing well on defense. I’ve been really impressed with Curtis Lofton. I’ve always thought he was a good player. This is his third year. He’s jumped up another notch. He’s one of the most underrated players at his position. I’m hopeful, for his sake, that he starts getting the recognition that he deserves. He’s playing really well. Obviously the front four is solid. Adding Ray Edwards in there is a big help. You already have Kroy [Bierman] and John [Abraham] on the outstide. They are a solid defensive team and they are going to have something special for us this week.

Q. You’ve had a lot of success in the Georgia Dome, especially the playoffs last year. What has been the secret of that success? What have to you effectively against the Falcons?

A. I think we struggled the first time we were down there last season [a 20-17 Falcons win]. The last time [a 48-21 Packers playoff win] we did a little bit better than we did the first time. I was able to get out of a couple sacks and make some plays. If those are sacks, the game is probably a little different. I would expect a tough game for us and them to be aggressive like the last time we played them. It will be important for us to be as efficient or as close to efficient as we were last time we played down there.

Q. We you talk to the Falcons there is a lot of talk about the way you played. There is a lot of reverence there. Is that one of the best games you’ve ever played?

A. I think it was. I think it was one of the better performances that I’ve had. It was a pretty clean game, not a lot of mental mistakes. I was throwing the ball the way I wanted to. We moved the ball pretty effectively. When you combine not turning the ball over and throwing the ball the way you want to you usually have pretty good results.falcons.1129

Q. There are a couple reasons it’s hard for teams to repeat as Super Bowl champions. The idea that you were so close to not being in the postseason last year, is that almost something you can say we are even better than we were for the entirety of last season?

A. That was a special group of men. This is a new team. We have 10 rookies. We’ve made some changes. We have a few different guys starting. Those are the challenges we like to take on with the new team we have in 2011. Also, looking at the first goal we have. Obviously everyone wants to win the Super Bowl. But we want to get a home playoff game in Green Bay, something we haven’t done the last few years. Last year we got in the playoffs as the sixth seed and ended up winning three on the road. It’s tough to do. … We’d like to get a home playoff game in Green Bay in January. To do that, we have to win the division.

Q. Can you talk about Jermichael Finley and how he’s added to your arsenal?

A. It’s great having Jermichael back. He’s a big body. He’s very athletic. He has good body control. He understands good route concepts. He catches the ball extremely well with his hands. He’s extremely talented. There are not many guys like him in the league. To have him back is another weapon. He’s given us great balance in the passing game with teams trying to figure out how to stop us. He had three touchdowns against Chicago. Last week, Denver’s plan was pretty obvious. They wanted to take him out of the game and you do that you leave some of those other guys open for big-play opportunities.

Q. You have been quoted as saying some of the comments down here were borderline disrespectful. I wonder if you would expand upon that and what bugged you about what was said?

A. I don’t care to expand a whole lot on that. I just think that some of the general comments that I heard that that game was kind of a fluke maybe. I would just say that I think you need to respect your opponents. We definitely respect the Falcons. We were fortunate enough to go down there and play a clean game. I just felt like that maybe the respect level, just as far as those comments were concerned, maybe weren’t there at times.

Q. Last year during the playoffs, it seems like you guys went after nickel back Christopher Owens a little bit. Coming in was that a point of emphasis for you guys?

A. I would say not, not necessarily. We made some plays. I feel like he covered pretty well. There were just a couple plays where we fit the ball in certain spots. Atlanta is not an exclusive man-to-man coverage team. To say we targeted one guy or another is not entirely accurate. We just wanted to stretch the field at times and take what we could when they were playing soft. Like I said, we were able to take care of the ball and move it effectively when we needed to.

Glad everybody thinks the packers are going to win. Last time i checked u hade 2 play the game 2 determine the winner. Oh and by the way, who won bills or patriots??? Last year patriots swept bills twice, this year bills beat patriots. Its called an upset. What are the lions record??? 4-0. This season is full of shockers so lets just watch the game and predict another NFL team is going to get blown out. The last time i checked, Aaron Rodgers is not better than Tom brady, and even tom brady didnt win every game. This is the NFL u can win every game.

Sad to say that Atlanta is playing nowhere near the Packers level so far this season. Sunday nights game will be as bad or even worse than the playoff game.

2-1-Your gonna hang ur hat on a game that didn’t even count half as much as a playoff game…forget about the Playoff game that you got pounded…POUNDED! Any person who feels good about being pounded in the Playoffs, is either Gayyy and likes to be pounded or is a loser and doesn’t care…seriously dude, Falcons got pounded worse than a 2 bit whhore in Tijuana…or your mom..same thing :) Falcons gave up about 320 yards and 3 touchdowns to a LOUSY Seattle team that hasn’t scored more than 30 pts the whole season…and u guys think you can beat Rodgers…with all the half breeds and toothless Carny’s in Atlanta…I’m sure you can find a red and white tent close by and take your big red nose, white makeup, beg red shoe’s and perform your clown act somewhere else…but leave it off the Football boards…CLOWN!

Roddy White needs to concentrate on “catching” the football..And leave all the press to the press heads..Who cares what he has to say..He is almost a “clone” of one M.V..His hero!! Really, all he is interested in is self interest!

The bird’s need to play a “clean” game to beat the Packers..All heads on the same page! I personally don’t see this happening..I.E. the 1st 4 games!!

This is dumb. Aaron is definitely reaching here. Falcon’s don’t “Respect” the Packers? That is a bunch of garbage. I believe the Falcons had a better record last year in the reg season and beat the Packers previous to that playoff game, so I understand Roddy White saying that he thinks his team was the better team and didnt play well. He might have been wrong, but it wasn’t ludicrous or disrespectful to say that. Packers were phenomenal and Falcons played like trash. I think the Falcons were better than they showed that night but they weren’t gonna beat GB.GB had already been in playoff mode for weeks before that game. Roddy’s not going to kiss anyone’s butt either like apparently Rodgers expects. This is definitely a reach if Rodgers is looking for some kind of bulletin board material here.

C’mon MAN-I think Rodgers took exception bcs white didn’t give Rodgers or the Packers any credit…he was simply sying the Falcons didn’t play up to there ability…all teams, all players have good day’s and bad day’s…but within his comments it would have been wise to give at least a crumb of accolades to the Packers…just a crumb :) Thing is if he backs it up that’s ok…but he’s on the offense…now, it’s all up to the defense to back up his words and play…”UP TO THERE ABILITY”…if they get beat this time, there will be NO EXCUSES…no, we didn’t play good, no, the refs made bad calls, no, I was sick..blah, blah, blah…

eric c-swiss cheese…good one! It’s true, Packers Passing defense is porous…however, there run defense is rated #2, and they are in the top 5 for turnovers, plus 8 currently. And there red zone is in the top 10, so they seem to be bending but not breaking…and my guess, when teams try to run, they can’t, at least enuf to keep up with Rodgers, so they try to pass, and maybe take too many chances and our D backs make a pick or two, game gets worse…that’s what I’d suspect wld happen again this Sunday…best shot for Falcons, a heavy dose of Gonzalez…he’s your best bet since our Linebackers pass D is suspect…still don’t think it will be enuf…Packers 47-17

I am about done with the NFL. IMO every game since Good-All started as Com should have an astrek beside it. You can’t hit like Scott Case did. You can’t talk smack like Broadway Joe did. AND if you do get away with something on the field you get a fine monday morning.
Whats fun about that? I’m really sick of it. This was the last old school mans game and now I cant get the wussy smell off it. I gave up boxing along time ago. So I guess it’s MMA all the way. I love my Falcons but if they are in the NoFunLeague then F-it Im out.

“We just wanted to stretch the field at times and take what we could when they were playing soft.” This is why I’ve always HATED the zone defense. It’s not an aggressive defense at all!!! We’ve been sold a bill of &^%&% from the beginning of this coaching regime.

Ledbetter has created this just like most of his other columns when a big game is ahead. Rodgers didn’t show or say anything but respect for the opponent. I read the whole article by Rodgers and it was completely professional. Where is all this crap talk coming from? It will be a great game and I gotta say I feel the Pack will come out on top as they have even more weapons than last year.

The Packers played far from their best in the regular season matchup and lost by only 3. Gonzalez was given credit for a catch where that he didn’t make on 4th down and McCarthy clearly should have challenged. The Packers fumbled on the goal line turning the ball over and failed to cover a kick off in the last minute of the game.

In the playoff game the Packers clearly benefited by having played the Falcons earlier in the year. The Packers knew what weaknesses to attack and thus Rodgers was sensational. Tramon Williams 2 INTs in the 1st half were huge. He took it to the house with 10 seconds left in the 1st half. Matt Ryan was exposed in that game in my view.

This year of course is different. Julio Jones is making his mark now after a slow start. The Packers aren’t playing nearly as well on defense as they did last year and are vulnerable through the air. Turner is off to a slow start and the Packers have been very good against the run. The Packers offense is playing much better as they have added a wideout in Cobb, Grant is healthy, and Finley is healthy.

The key for the Falcons to me is how well Matt Ryan plays. He’s accurate, not particularly mobile and I think the jury is out on his prowess in the vertical passing game. Turnovers are always a factor and special teams play is as well. It should be a fun game.
