Q&A: Mike Smith not happy with execution

TAMPA  – Falcons coach Mike Smith is clearly not pleased with how his team is performing and clearly knows that he has problems along the offensive line.

OPENING STATEMENT: I felt like that we fought our tails off to get back into the game. We didn’t play very well. We didn’t do a whole lot of good things in the first three quarters and at the end of the day we just dug ourselves [into] too big of a hole and we weren’t able to execute the things that we need to execute there at the end of the ball game to give us a chance. We’ve got to do a better job in all three phases of the game if we want to have an opportunity to win ball games. We can’t turn the ball over like we did and have the turnovers in the red zone. Those are crucial and we’ve got to continue to work on protecting our quarterback, especially there in the first half. [Matt Ryan] got hit way too many times, and two of those turnovers were a direct result of our quarterback getting hit. And with that I’ll open it up with questions.

ON THE OFFSIDES PENALTY ON THE FOURTH-AND-ONE: You guys saw it on tape. They were not going to snap the football. It was going to be a freeze play. They were going to use a hard count. We talked about it on the sidelines. We did not execute as an entire defense, […] one person in that play did not determine the outcome of the game. There were lots of plays in this ball game today in which we didn’t get our job done.

ON WHAT HE’S SEING IN HIS TEAM: We’re making way too many mistakes in terms of penalties and we’re not hitting on all cylinders right now. That’s something that we’ve got to get fixed and it’s […] something that we’ve been working on since the beginning of the season and we will continue to work on it. Those are a bunch of proud men in there. We didn’t get the outcome that we wanted today, but we are going to work at it. It’s a long season. We’ve got a loss on the road to a divisional opponent. That’s what happened.

ON BEING DOWN BY 10 IN EACH GAME THIS SEASON: We have not started fast. We have not gotten out of the chute like we would like. Every coach in this league talks about starting fast. It’s one of the things that you have to do and we have not done that up to this point. The guys continue to fight hard. They have resolve, but we’ve got to make sure that we come out of the game hitting on all cylinders and I’ll [take] my hat off to the Tampa Bay Bucs. Today they were the better team.”

ON HIS LINE: Of course when you get your starting center that had played 144 consecutive games, getting him back is big for us. Again, we’ve got a lot of areas to address. You saw the ball game and you know that there are certain things that we’re not doing as efficiently and as effectively as we need to. That’s the bottom line.

ORLO,, SEING IS USUALLY SPELLED SEEING. BUT WHO CARES?

DUNTA ROBINSON GETS CALLED OUT ON RADIO EVERY OTHER PLAY. ” DUNTA REACTED LATE TO THE BALL AND THEN MISSED THE TACKLE “. I KNOW HE’S NOT A GOOD TACKLER DESPITE HIS PHYSICAL REP. ANOTHER MISTAKE NOT TO HAVE FOUND SOMEONE TO MOVE INTO HIS SLOT REAL QUICK. HE’S A TARGET DEFENDER AND HE WAS AWFUL LAST YEAR. GUESS YOU CAN’T IMPROVE AT EVERY POSITION IN ONE YEAR. I’D HANG THAT ONE ON THE GENERAL MANAGER ALSO. IT’S PERSONNEL.

Run a slant play, Run a wide screen play..pass on first down..hell just put all your plays in a computer and let it pick random plays, it would be better than the play calling from the sidelines right now. Damn man, I am half drunk in bar with no NFL experince and I won 10 bucks calling betting on what play is gonna be called. If I can do it, you can damn well bet that every Def Coordinator in the NFL can. Good god our play selection is unbelievable.

When I saw the brutal opening schedule with 3/4 on the road an a road trip from Florida to Washington, a game on grass and one against the Eagles, I said to myself, self, I’ll be happy to come out of that 2-2 and start racking up home victories again. We suck on grass, we struggle on the road, but we’re invincible in the dome. That’s 8 wins right there. We go 500 on the road, were 12-4. Catch a few breaks, maybe better. People need to relax.

YEAH, NO SH#@T! FANS ARE NOT PLEASED WITH THE EXECUTION EITHER! ESPECIALLY ON THE O-LINE! MAYBE, WE MADE A MISTAKE BY LETTING HARVEY DAHL GO! BETTER YET, MAYBE WE MADE A MISTAKE BY TRADING BACK INTO THE 1ST RD, TO SELECT SAM BAKER IN 2008!!! M. TURNER ,ONLY 11 CARRIES? EVEN WITH ALL THAT, WE STILL HAD A CHANCE! RODDY, MAKE THOSE CATCHES!!!

gee it’s a great thing the failcons braintrust gave up all those picks for julio when they clearly needed to improve in several areas. the next coaching regime is gonna be working with their hands tied behind their back not having the draft picks to rebuild after the birds continue to implode this season. The team looks bad regardless of what they do and it has been going on since the first preseason game and it will continue. Very overrated team that needs a all around running back with speed and not two fullback pretending to be backs. A defense that also terrible regardless of what they do (e.g., tackling, covering, blitzing, tuffness, etc). Everything that team do is UGLY as if they do not practice as a pro football team.

Baker again had a bad game. They need put this guy on the bench/trade/cut and get someone that at least looks like they are trying to block someone. Baker has to be the Worse OT in the NFL..

We need no-huddle as often as possible. Seems like we used it a bit more this game, and it made both our offense and defense better. The guys at ESPN keep on questioning why Mike M. doesn’t allow it more. He seems to be taking a bit of their advice, but he needs to take more. I can’t remember a single time we ran no-huddle and did not move the ball significantly. When Ryan was asked about going permanently to no-huddle, his response was “No no no no, Mike M. makes some good play calls.” But I don’t think he really believes that. It’s obvious to everyone, when MM makes the calls, we struggle, and always have against elite teams. But when Ryan makes the calls at the line, we’re gold. MIKE MULARKEY NEEDS TO ALLOW MORE NO-HUDDLE!!!!! SHEESH!!!!

It’s painfully obvious MM. No-huddle helps both the offense and the defense. GET IT THROUGH YOUR THICK SKULL!!!!!!!!! WE NEVER MOVE THE BALL AGAINST ELITE TEAMS UNLESS WE’RE IN NO-HUDDLE!!!!!!!!!

It’s amazing how so-called fans of the games react after three games of a sixteen game schedule. Based on this logic, I guess the Lions will play the Bills in the SB. I hope non of you people are in supervisor and critical thinking position :-(

Hindsight: Take the points. Should have kicked the field goal rather than going for it on 4th and too long, especially the way the offense was going. Result, tie game. OT. Why wasn’t Smith asked about that?

Its the same song out of Coach Smith, only a different key ! I look for another loss next week against Seattle and then a lop-sided Home Loss against The Pac.
I am starting to be as bad as the Trolls !
I say Stop paying da Bums and ship em outta here ! This is just not acceptable !

Oh yeah, the stats look good on different individuals after this Tampa Loss but it is what it is ! ! !
Just another loss and one step closer to the foot in the grave with no chance of coming back to make a run at anything except the back door !

They lose 3 or 4 more games then a run to the playoffs is outta reach too ! A 10-6 might slip em in there as wildcard but I doubt it. I think my wife said it best because a female can and does see things different than us men do.

She said, well, they going to get paid regardless of whether they win another game or not and as long as they know that, its just like Joe Blow going to work everyday

I do not fault the coaches, as much as, the personnel on the field. Roddy, you have been to how may Pro Bowls and now you are starting to have TO hands? O-Line, can we replace Sam Baker now? Us fans will totally forgive you for that nightmare if you just replace now instead of having Ryan killed.

Bright spot: Julio is going to be as good as advertised. Can’t wait to see him do what he did yesterday on turf.

Bottom line is we have to fix that offensive line, today. There are some good players out there who are looking for a paycheck. Not sure if any are LT, but at least look.

Excuse’es Excuse’es—-hey the packers exposed us last season in the NFC title game in the dome.Ever since then its been down hill for the Falcons.this team has not changed that much, pretty much the same, excelp for jones.we went down to tampa to play an imspired football team ready to play.thier coach had them ready, even he said on tv on the post game show,we hate the dirty birds.if the falcons would have put forth any kind of effort, they still could have one the game, they just did not match tampa in intensity! and coaching takes the blame there.

Mike Mularkey’s play calling and the O-Line are going to get Matt Ryan seriously hurt. The offense doesn’t have any rhythm until Matt is permitted to call his own plays. How much more obvious does it need to be before the head coach fixes the problem of Mularkey. 4th and 1 and you try to throw the ball, whereas 3rd and 7 and you try to run???????? DUH????????

Mularkey and Sam Baker both need to go….and real soon!!!!!

Too many weapons . Too much money spent , for this kind of production. If Smitty cant see what the fans are tired of seeing we are in for a long season. Mularkey needs to go . There are OCs that would love to have an opportunity to execute this offense.
