FLOWERY BRANCH — For the second consecutive day, Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan was limited in practice with a knee injury on Thursday.

He received substantially more work with the first-unit than he did on Wednesday and is expected to start on Sunday when the Falcons (1-1) face Tampa Bay (1-1) at 4:15 p.m. Sunday at Raymond James Stadium.

Also, center Todd McClure did not suffer a setback and also participated more in practice than he did on Wednesday. He’s expected to be available for Tampa Bay.

Defensive ends John Abraham (thigh) and Ray Edwards (foot) were added to the injury report and were limited in practice. Wide receiver Roddy White (thigh) was also limited in practice.

Defensive tackle Jonathan Babineaux (knee) and cornerback Kelvin Hayden (hamstring) did not practice.

Defensive tackle Corey Peters (back) and safety Shann Schillinger (neck) fully participated in practice.

Tampa Bay linebacker Quincy Black (ankle), defensive end Tim Crowder (calf) and offensive tackle James Lee (knee) and wide receiver Sammie Stroughter (foot) did not practice.

Tight end Kellen Winslow (knee) was limited.

First! I have no doubt wild horses wouldn’t keep Matty out of this game.

This injury report is concerning. The Buc is still obstintiously the best team in the NFL. Hopefully Ryan arm won’t be too tired. I change my mind about Gonzalez now. He still old, but man can he play. Hopefully Turner continues to grow and play longer than one quarter. As long as Dunta and Owens are out of the game, we should be fine and possibly squeak out a victory.

I am worried we will have to start Owens at the nickle position with Hayden injured. Josh Freeman used his receivers and threw Owens way last year. I hope Hayden’s hamstring gets better and can play the nickle again this week. He looked better than Owens last week.

I’m interested to see how our offense handles the Bucs front 7. They have a lot of youth on that side of the ball, so I’m hoping we can get our run game going the same way we did against Philly’s front 7. A good dose of Turner and a nice mix of Rogers should help set up our passing game very nicely.

Also, I’m really hoping that our O-line gets a bit of a break this week. The Bucs only have 1 sack this season, so hopefully we can protect Matt Ryan. Sam Baker has been through the ringer with Julius Peppers and Trent Cole, so let’s see if he can keep the Bucs pass rushers at bay.

They just put up 35 against the Eagles…why cant they score 41 against the Bucs?

Michael M.

September 22nd, 2011
7:07 pm

You forget, they can make em cough up the ball and score that way, they can intercept and score that way, they can run one back and score that way, the offense is not the only way they can score ! Yeah, they could put that many on there, but more in line to the 31 points.

LOL! Yeah, and the offense can give up that ball just as quickly. Special teams can give up that ball just as easily. LOL! Be careful, it might be the Bucs that put up the 41 points.

I agree with the following article (1.). MM won’t throw screen passes to slow down the pass rush and his play calling hurts this team. We move the ball better when MR calls his own plays.

1. Matt Ryan’s a good playcaller: The Atlanta offense sputtered for most of the evening and couldn’t sustain any long drives until the Falcons jumped into their no-huddle attack late in the game. With Ryan pulling from more than 30 plays at the line of scrimmage, the offense came to life. With the Falcons down 31-21, Ryan converted on a 13-yard pass to Tony Gonzalez on third-and-12 and a 14-yard pass to Julio Jones on third-and-2. Ryan tossed a 1-yard touchdown pass to fullback Ovie Mughelli to cap the 12-play drive. After a defensive stop, the Falcons’ offense went back on the attack with 10:45 left in the game. The unit overcame a holding call on center Joe Hawley when Ryan called a trap play that sprung Michael Turner for a 61-yard gain. Five plays later, Turner scooted around right end for a 3-yard touchdown run with 4:48 left.

This “Matty Ice” moniker is so childish. It sounds like the name of a comic book action hero. Atlanta’s OL hasn’t been protecting their hero the last couple of weeks. They won’t this week either and that’s why Matty Ice is going to be turned into Matty “CRUSHED” Ice. Go Bucs!!
