FLOWERY BRANCH — Philadelphia defensive tackle Cullen Jenkins confirmed to the Philadelphia Inquirer that he was fined $15,000 for a helmet-to-helmet hit Sunday on Matt Ryan.

”You can punch somebody and only get fined $10,000,” Jenkins said. “You do an honest mistake, it’s not like I launched at him …”

If it’s worthy of a fine…it should have been called as a personal foul.

Jenkins should not have been fined.
It could have been flagged…SHOULD HAVE been flagged.
But this is football.
If you are going to play tackle…helmet to helmet contact WILL HAPPEN.
You cannot…CANNOT…judge intention.
Human eyes do not work fast enough to make these calls consistently.

Design a better helmet or start playing touch football.

Actually, if Maclin hadn’t braced for impact…squatting in fear…there would have been no helmet to helmet contact. Also…when DR hits the guy…his feet were on the ground. They came off when he bounced off Maclin. So he didn’t actually “launch”. So…Maclin took three steps and braced for impact. He was a RUNNER and not a DEFENSELESS RECEIVER. If his feet were on the ground when he makes contact…he DID NOT LAUNCH. Therefore, the helmet to helmet contact is allowed under the rules.

I can see fines and suspension if players are out for blood on someone, but they need to let em play, but indeed protect the QB back in the Pocket but if he starts to run hes fair game as it being good QB,s are scarce as it is in the NFL.

waynester

These problems can easily be remedied by the league through technology and the empowerment of the replay official to “throw the yellow flag” from the booth on obvious infractions not caught by the on-field crew. Giving the HCoach the ability to toss out the red flag for missed calls as well as botched calls would be another helpful option. My other major gripe with the NFL’s technophobia involves ball placement. A smart chip in the footballs themselves, coupled with sensors beneath the playing field, along the side, goal and end zones would eliminate doubt and insure fairness. In a multi-billion $$ sport, it’s beyond me why these simple and inexpensive changes haven’t already been implemented…..

C’MON….
The style of argument you’re using is the same that some people use for gun control, etc. “well, if you let people have guns, why not atomic bombs?”…. the league has dragged it’s collective feet about implementing new technologies that would level the playing field for everyone. On any given Sunday, one game will have an excellent officiating crew while another will have a bunch of “Mr Magoos” who miss calls all day long, with no recourse for the coaches to challenge them. We’ve finally got the league to accept instant replay and booth reviews are now routine. Why not take the next step and make teams getting screwed to the tune of Million$ just because the league doesn’t want to butt heads with the Umpires’ union…

Me too, i wish defenses could tee off like Jack Tatum..

BUT since the league has installed wimpy rules, I’d at least rather see them enforced with yardage , so that it actually matters, than a fine which really doesn’t matter since they are all muti milllionaires anyway..that 15k is probably just one less gawdy blingy trashy piece of jewelry to most players..

To be truthful if they really wanted to stop the unclean hits so to speak, they could pass a majority vote rule amongst the Players all around the NFL that if a player is flagged on a so called dirty hit its a automatic 25 yard penalty added on at the spot of the foul . I guarantee that would clean it up in a hurry !

Officials will all ways miss calls just like the pass we intercepted but didn’t since it hit the ground. I grew up watching pro football in the 60’s a those guys took the hits and knew it was a part of their job on Sunday. The game is not the same and it s**ks. I was Very fortunate to spend a few years around some old-school NFL/AFL players @ UF in College……

I remember some stories the infamous “Conrad Dolber” told me…..How he would get into the head of the player at the start of the game…..talking about their Wife, Momma, etc…..then when he was in the pile, the fun began….poking eyes, gouging ears, twisting noses…..then giving em a “nutter”…..
