FLOWERY BRANCH – Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan earned his first trip to the Pro Bowl last season and is ready to continue his ascent to super stardom in the National Football League.

In three seasons, he has passed for 10,061 yards, which ranks fifth in franchise history.

Last season, he set franchise records with 357 comple¬tions on 571 pass attempts. He also threw for career-highs with 3,705 yards and 28 touchdowns with a career-low nine interceptions and a 91.0 passer rating.

With the season-opener against the Chicago Bears looming, here’s what Ryan had to say to the media this week:

ON THE CHICAGO BEARS: They’re never easy. It doesn’t matter who you’re playing. Chicago is a very good football team. It’s going to be a difficult place to go in and play. It’s a storied franchise and a great stadium to play in. It’s going to be a lot of fun.

ON THE TURF AT SOLDIER FIELD: It’s something you can’t really worry about too much. Our equipment staff here does a great job of having everything at our disposal up there. I know (Equipment Manager) Brian Boigner and his staff will have all of the equipment that we need up there.

ON HIS EXPECATIONS FOR THE OFFENSE: Our expectation is pretty simple and it’s to play well every week and give ourselves a chance to win. It doesn’t go any

further than that for me.

ON THE BEARS DEFENSE: You have a lot of tape on guys that have been in the League for a long time, but there’s also a reason they’ve been in the League for a long time because they’re very good players. Certainly, when you look at this Chicago defense, they’ve got some talented guys; some perennial Pro Bowlers, especially at the linebacker position and really in the front four as well. We’re going to have our work cut out for us. It’s been tight games every time we’ve played them, come down to the wire and we’re going to need to prepare well all week and do what we can during the week to give ourselves the chance to play well on Sunday.

ON JOE HAWLEY STARTING AT CENTER FOR TODDY McCLURE: I think Joe will do a good job. Joe has been here, preparing hard for the last couple of seasons. He has put in his time and I think has studied the way you need to study so when this opportunity presents itself, I think Joe will do a good job. Obviously, you’d love to have Todd (McClure) out there, there’s no question about that. He’s a veteran guy, but I think Joe steps in and does what he needs to do.

ON CHICAGO’S RUN DEFENSE: Certainly, when you go against a tough defense that is stout against the run, you know it forces you to be effective in the passing game. We’ll prepare that way.

ON LAST SEASON’S OPENER AT PITTSBURGH: Opening games are always fun to be a part of. It’s an exciting weekend. I think one of the things that you have to go into it knowing is that you’re going to see some things you didn’t see during the preseason from them and there are going to be some things that are unexpected. You have to adjust to that. I think we’ve got the guys on the offensive and defensive sides of the ball that are able to adjust to some knew things that you haven’t seen during the preseason and adapt to that.

The offense will score enough points for a victory. The only question is how many points our defense, led by the worst Defensive Coordinator in the NFL, will surrender.

Emmitt Smith stated on Mike and Mike this AM that Mike Turner is one of his top 3 backs in league behind CJ and AP…so I guess we need to call Mike “MT”. I think Mike will get 121 on the ground with a TD, Matty Ice will throw for 227 and 2 TD’s, Matt Bryant will kick 3 FG’s for a Falcons 30-17 win. Go Falcons!!!!!

I don’t think the Bears will be very good this year. I picked them to finish 3rd in their division below .500, and this is a game the Falcons should win in my opinion. With that said, between the weather, field conditions, and the talented players they still have on D, this will be a good test for the upgraded (on paper) Falcons offense.

I’ll admit I’m a little worried about Hawley myself; Buck Belue’s been going on and on about how he’s not anywhere near ready and I haven’t seen anything from him in the preseason that makes me think otherwise. But Ryan’s a smart QB and I expect he’ll figure out something that will work. We should be able to pull out a close one.

We were in the top 5 in scoring defense last year. Our problem was giving up yards in the air not points on the scoreboard.

Should be an easy win for the Falcons. D. Robinson will cover their best receiver with no safety help, turn Abraham and Edward to go after Cutler. Falcons win 48 to 17.

The Bears’ Defense is still formidable, and Atlanta can’t get too lax thinking that Chicago is going to lie down with their first game at home. Cutler has weapons to throw to and they will be motivated as well to attack the Falcons’ suspect secondary.

If Atlanta is serious about reversing their trend of futility they must attack Chicago’s weak O-line and force Cutler out of his comfort zone.

Bears FTW is probably SeenThisB4, hiramsaint, or some other blog troll using a different name. If the AJC was smart, they would require logins and unique screen ID’s to prevent this crap.

Oh, and FYI Bears FTW, last time these two teams played in 2009 the Falcons won 21-14 and the year before we also won 22-20 on that crushing comeback by Matt Ryan, Michael Jenkins, Jason Elam. I was at taht game and remember Urlacher prancing around on the sideline after the Bears scored with 11 seconds to go. We see how that turned out. Lastly, the Falcons hold the all-time series record 13-12.

Bears FTW, who exactly is going to beat us. We know your offense doesn’t score a lot of points. So are you expecting us to make a bunch of turnovers? Also, Hester catches balls that are kicked, not thrown. I like Johnny Knox, but he is not having a career day on us. If we score over 23, Da Bears lose!

I see this game being a real close game due to da Bears LB run stop ability. But I also see several big plays from Roddy and JJ, and the Preditor, Edwards combo getting in Cutlers head early and often. GO FALCONS
