00908 Flowery Branch; Former Atlanta Falcons center Jeff Van Note, left, and current Falcons center Todd McClure, right, are shown after Falcons practice at Falcons training camp Wednesday afternoon in Flowery Branch, Ga., Sept. 8, 2010. McClure is the current Falcons center who broke the team record for consecutive starts when Atlanta opened at Pittsburgh last season. Jeff Van Note is the Falcons Ring of Honor center who started 225 games. Jason Getz jgetz@ajc.com
FLOWERY BRANCH – Falcons coach Mike Smith gave his first “official” injury report of the season after practice on Wednesday.
Center Todd McClure, who underwent right knee surgery on Aug. 29 and has started 144 straight games, was the only player declared out of Sunday’s game against the Chicago Bears.
Defensive tackle Corey Peters (knee) was the only other player who did not practice. Defensive tackle Jonathan Babineaux (knee/shoulder) and right tackle Tyson Clabo (elbow) were limited in practice.
Also, cornerback Dunta Robinson (hamstring), defensive end Lawrence Sidbury (ankle), center Rob Bruggeman (concussion) and wide receiver Roddy White (thigh) all fully participated in practice.

He will definitely be missed. All kinds of things could go wrong under center with a new person in – from fumbled snaps to problems with the shotgun formation to adequacy of blocking for Ryan. On another note, Chris Redman struggled mightily during preseason. Should any consideration be given to bringing in David Garrard?

Hey we all love Todd McClure and the job he has done over the years as a Falcon on the field as well as in the community….however I hope Joe Hawley takes this opportunity and does not look back. Todd McClure afterall is in the final year of his contract as well as turning 34 in Feb of this yr so the window is closing and we really need to see if Joe Hawley is the heir apparent.

FalconsTalon,
Redman was doing his Chris Chandler imitation: It’s hard to throw when you’re lying on your back or running for your life.

in the past these are the type of games that the falcons have failed to show up. not to put too much significane on this opener but the falcons need to prove they are actually one of the elite teams by beating a good chicago team on the road.

We’re not playing a cold game unless it snow in Carolina in December.
Joe will be fine. He’s been learning from Todd for a long while now as well as subbing at center the past season. In fact he played in every game but one last year. I can’t believe Joe’s only 22 year old!

I agree that the best way to find out if Hawley is our guy going forward is to stick him out there. We need to find the replacement BEFORE McClure retires. We already need to use our 2nd round pick next year on a TE so I hope he is up to the task.
