Fox’s Jimmy Johnson handicaps the NFC South

FLOWERY BRANCH – Fox Sports NFL analyst Jimmy Johnson believes the NFC South is a two-team race between the Falcons and the New Orleans Saints.

He gives the nod to the Falcons and the Saints because they have veteran-laden teams. However, he didn’t pick one team over the other.

“I think the Saints and the Falcons, both will be extremely strong,” Johnson said on a recent conference call. “I think when you look at the entire league, what we are going to find out in the early part of the season is because we didn’t have the offseason programs and all of the minicamps, I think because of that, the veteran teams and the teams that retained their coaches, will be much stronger and so much better than some of the other teams.”

Johnson doesn’t believe that Tampa Bay will build on their 10-6 season.

“I don’t see Tampa duplicating what they did a year ago when they won 10 ball games,” Johnson said. “They have a young team and they should get better.”

The former Cowboys and Dolphins head coach isn’t expecting much from Carolina and first-year coach Ron Rivera.

“Carolina is going to struggle with a new coaching staff and with some young players but the veteran teams like the Saints and the Falcons, I think they will look very good and so much better than the others early in the season,” Johnson said. “It’s a two-team race as far as I’m concerned.”

How are you ranking the teams in the NFC South?

He’s not exactly going out on a limb is he? I like Jimmy Johnson – but he’s just stated the obvious here really. Hasn’t even gone so far as to nominate who he thinks will win the division out of the two leading candidates. Can’t wait for the rest of his NFL analysis. Let me guess, the Packers will do well, the Colts might struggle without Peyton Manning, the 49ers will miss the playoffs…that kind of hard-hitting, insightful analysis?

I’m going out on a limb here and predicting that Jimmy Johnson will continue broadcasting and will not coach an NFL team this year.

Jimmy Johnson, statistically, has always favored the Falcons when making his Sunday picks these past 3 years. The only analyst at Fox who has been more favorable is Terry Bradshaw, who has an obvious man crush on Matt Ryan. Terry was the only analyst at Fox to pick Atlanta winning in the divisional playoffs.

Falcons, Saints, Bucs, Panthers.

The NFC North and the AFC South will have more losses due to playing the NFC South…..except for the Pudthers – they’ll give those teams an extra win.

To me it doesn’t matter who wins the NFC South. Green Bay showed last season that you don’t have to win your division to win the Super Bowl. It would be nice to take the division two seasons in a row and really take over the division, but taking over the division doesn’t always result in Super Bowl wins. Look at how the Chargers have really taken over the AFC West, but they don’t have a ring. All I want is to get into the tournament and go for the gold.

Hopefully, it doesn’t take a hurricane and national pity for us to be given a title. Or a sub-.500 playoff team to snatch it away. But at least the league was nice enough to keep you from moving to San Antonio.

Most great QB’s in the NFL have had great receivers who made them alot better than they ever would have been. Roddy sure stepped up last yr, but, Julio needs to be a phenom for Ryan to join the elite. Bradshaw had Stallworth/Swan, Marino had Duper/Clayton, Montana had Rice/Taylor (sure burn’t ATl, but who didn’t?

wow…thought this was about football…the falcants had at least 3, yes 3, games given to them last year from questionable ref’s calls…talk about pity…u had all the chances in the world…top seed, home field advantage…got blown out and fans left at half time…but i guess, the pack got all the breaks…someone told them Melt was going to float that out pattern….every fan watching knew that throw was coming….all you had to do was kick a field goal and the game changes…oh, well..the falcants lost another playoff game…so, what’s new?

Every great QB can consistently loft a pass over the shoulder of a receiver running away from them up the field and place it in their hands so they don’t have to break stride. One throw to Julio (he dropped it) the whole preseason still doesn’t prove Ryan has that skill. Bradshaw needs to get over his man-crush until Ryan can make that throw. When we are lucky the pass is to a cameraman, when we aren’t, it’s to the DB.

one more thing, FL D…that ‘great’ QB had the ARM or field presence to get it to their receivers…Melt hasn’t proved either of those…

All I’m saying is Stallworth and Swan made Bradshaw. More so than any other QB with the rings. For Ryan, it’s gotta be the same thing. Great RB and some spectacular receptions by the Wide Outs.

All I’m saying is that Stallworth and Swan made Bradshaw. Maybe Bradshaw looks at Ryan and see’s the simiularities. Harris/Turner and for Julio and White making great receptions the way Swan and Stallworth did.

If the Saints beat Greenbay on the road tomorrow. I think they are the team to beat in the NFC. We couldn’t keep pace with GB and we had homefield advantage….in fact down the stretch we lost to the Saints and we only beat them earlier in the year when they missed a FG. I’m really starting to worry about my Falcons…..but….I’m still flapping my wings!!!
