Falcons coach Mike Smith said the coaching staff had some tough decisions.
The Falcons released three veterans — defensive end Chauncey Davis, linebacker Coy Wire and defensive tackle Trey Lewis — and 14 other players on Friday. The team needs to release 10 more players to cut down to the mandatory roster of 53 by 4 p.m. on Saturday.
“There [were] a lot of guys fighting for roster spots,” Falcons coach Mike Smith said after the Ravens’ game.
Smith admitted that there were just a handful of spots open. Running back Antone Smith, who ran for 114 yards on 11 carries and caught two passes for 42 yards against the Ravens, made a strong case for a roster spot.
“We obviously saw some guys step up,” Smith said. “We saw some guys that didn’t necessarily take care of business. We’ve got a bunch of decisions to make. Over the next 48 hours that’s what we’ll be doing. We will be spending our time to put our 53 guys together, to put our roster together to open this 2011 season.”
The team plans to cut in stages and some veterans were let go in stage one.
The team also waived tight end Marquez Branson, fullback Lucas Cox, center Paul Fenaroli, safety Matt Hansen, wide receiver Brandyn Harvey, running back Gartrell Johnson, defensive end Tom McCarthy, cornerback Kamaal McIlwain, center Ryan McMahon, safety Rafael Priest, defensive end Kiante Tripp, safety Suaesi Tuimaunei and linebacker Bear Woods.
The Falcons also reached an injury settlement with wide receiver Andy Strickland.

He spent six seasons in Atlanta, totaling 204 tackles (147 solo), 10 sacks, two interceptions, two forced fumbles, eight fumble recoveries and six passes defensed in 95 career games.

Never have understood why we keep Chris Owens and now D. Franks. They sure can’t play cornerback. I hope Hayden stays healthy.

I knew Chauncey Davis was out, he was too expensive for a backup. Corey Wire got a lot of years out of that body. John Parker Wilson was not impressive out there. It wouldn’t be a surprised if he were gone. I think Chris Owens is going to be a guy playing, who’s on the bubble. He and Decoud if not playing well, could be on the bench before the mid season.

Lots of people down on JPW. It’s pretty brave to head into the season with two QBs. I guess in a pinch, Kerry Meier could take some snaps and hand the ball off. But, yikes. Where’s Tom Tupa when you need him?
And not to deminish the role of a long snapper, but don’t you feel that if a dude like TE Michael Palmer could learn to do it well, it would open up a really valuable spot on the roster? Long snappers should be roster exempt or something.

There is a new rule on the 3rd QB, I think. I believe teams can keep 54. Heard it on the radio, not sure about the details.

BirdDawg24, the roster limit is still 53. On gameday, you may have 46 active players instead of 45 + a third QB. You may also choose not to use a QB in that 46th spot. Third QB rules are also gone. QBs can sub in and out whenever.

They need to cut that entire semi pro team. They will finish last in the NFC south and their bandwagon fans will jump off as usual. But hey, you guys can still be happy with that NFC south championship from last year. Maybe by 2030, your failcants will have sniffed at a super bowl. My packers will destroy them again. I really enjoy watching a so called number one seed, get their tails waxed at home, thy was priceless.

There’s no way TD gets rid of Sidbury. They would never give up this early on someone they saw enough to pick him where they picked him.
Joey asked the only important question in this blog so far.. Who else has been cut around the league and can they help us?

Bush and Walls on the bubble, and Owens a lock?
I thought these people were supposed to be “supreme” talent evaluators. That blind spot in their thinking is so big, you can see it all the way down in south Georgia, And the rest of the league is licking their chops, Owens wouldn’t make a good high school team. If they do this, they’ll be 6-10 at best.

It seems like all of the fans see something than the team don’t and that is that Bear Woods is a player and should be on the roster. The guy was always around the ball even on special teams.

I’ll be stunned if Bear isn’t on the practice squad this year. The kid’s got game.
A few folks have asked why Trey Lewis was cut. It’s simply a matter of the roster makeup.
The Falcons typically keep four DTs on the roster, with one of them on the 8-man inactive list (now a 7-man list with the new 46-man active roster).
Babineaux, Jerry, and Peters are locks. Vance Walker won the #4 spot. That left Lewis without a chair when the music stopped.

I want to know what towering genius at Falcons headquarters decided to give broadcast rights to 790theZone this season. The evening signal from that station is atrocious. Picking up the Ravens game outside the perimeter was difficult at best. Even inside the dome, the signal was weak. Folks listening to the radio are really going to be disappointed come the Eagles game.

In my opinion..Bear’s ability doesnt measure up to his tough image and name..maybe he should stop focusing on his hair (he and Dunta) and focus on skills! Im just saying…P.Jerry…PEW! Show me something! C.Wire, He hustles in my opinion.; Chauncey and Trey…Well, lm guessing they were out played, out toughed, out skilled, by Jerry? Shame on you two… PEW Jerry must produce! P. Cutting Chauncey they will sorely regret. all great teams needs guys like Davis, SOLID, SOLID, SOLID DE in running sitches, good pressure, NO INJURIES. wow. MR. Real housewifes Bierman is the over-hyped NO pass-rush reason the last two years and was the Edwards fix. cutting Davis is ONE of the real bad moves I’ve seen Dimitroff make.

I have to disagree with you for calling it a fancy name. It think it is a little kid name. It sounds like what his mother would have yelled when he was in trouble. (John Parker Wilson you get in this house right now!) If he wants to be viewed as a grownup he needs to decide on a name. He should be John Wilson or Parker Wilson but not all three. If he thinks that makes him stand out he is missing the point. Only performance counts.
He should be sent to the practice squad or released outright. Not a quick enough release, sloppy play and a sissy-boy name.

So we are cutting the high character guys now? Coy Wire and Bear Woods wouldve provided heart, soul, invaluable, priceless leadership and guts to any NFL team of twenty years ago. Its rather telling that the most outspoken leader of the team during the recent shameless tug of war of greed got the boot.

Usually, when you look at the list of roster cuts, it’s like—meh, nah, who cares…? Not so anymore. I really like some of these guys who’re leaving and like many of us, thought Woods had finally cracked the 53. It’s a good problem to have, I’m just not used to it yet….
