BY CHRIS VIVLAMORE

FLOWERY BRANCH — With two starting positions still up for grabs, several players will get more playing time in Thursday finale than would normally be the case in an exhibition finale. The biggest competition continues to be for the starting right guard position between Garrett Reynolds and Mike Johnson.

Falcons coach Mike Smith said he expects Johnson to get more snaps this week. Johnson missed the exhibition opener with concussion symptoms and the coaching staff is trying to get an equal look at each player against the opposing first-team defense.

“There are certain competitions that we need to continue to evaluate because at this point we don’t really have clear-cut winners on who will be the starters,” Smith said.

Christopher Owens and Dominique Franks are battling for the nickel back spot.

MORE TIME FOR EDWARDS: Another player who could see extended time Thursday is defensive end Ray Edwards. The free-agent signee made his exhibition debut against the Steelers after missing the first two games following offseason knee surgery.

“That is something we would like to do in terms of getting him up to speed,” Smith said of Edwards’ anticipated playing time. “I thought that there were some things that Ray did very well [in his debut]. It’s hard to judge the first game back. You can see his explosiveness. It was first-game rust that you see on all the guys and that’s why we’d like to get him some more snaps this week.”

Here’s the depth chart that was released by the team for the Ravens’ game (I tweaked it and added James Sanders, No. 2 behind William Moore for now. –dol):

How is Rodgers at the bottom of the depth chart, at RB?
He has shown great promise.

Suggestion: Italicize or put a star by J. Sanders to emphasize that it is a “DOL tweak” vs. official roster.

Looks like I might be rockin’ the Matty Ice jersey (No. 2) re: responses on this blog post …

I hope P. Sylvester lands on another team or makes the Falcons practice squad. Didn’t see where he got much preseason PT, so who knows?!?!?

Do they have to release one more guy to “make room” for J. Sanders to stay at the now-mandated 80-man roster?

I think they released 11 guys (5 last week to get to 85, 6 yesterday including injury settlement w/Buckley) to get down to 79, but then signed Romburg as backup C.

I also thought TD said (or was hinted somewhere) early in camp that he might scour the cut player list across the league looking for another vet CB …

:( … dang, reading is fundamental (RIF) ..

disregard the italicized suggestion .. missed the 2:51 am blog post about J. Sanders signing a 1-year deal.

my 2nd post, as it is repetitive of the other post you made about making room for J. Sanders after getting down to 80 players.

I am going back to bed ….

Watch Ray Edwards line up against a Raven single teamer this week. He didn’t do squat last week, and if he does anything this week, it will be against non-starters.

As I was saying, who exactly do the ‘Aints have at DE that either hasn’t been cut, isn’t a rookie, won’t be suspended, or isn’t a scrub sub? Ray Edwards looks better than all of the above.

Marcus — They’ll have to release someone (Priest or Hansen likely) to make room for Sanders. He did say that he was looking for salary cap casualties. Sanders qualifies. He was set to make $2.8 million. I have to go back to see if he specifically referred to CBs.

Marcus — Yes, I’ll put J. Sanders in ital. Sylvester very smart (Civil Engineering). He’ll be somewhere because he’s fast and can learn the scout team’s offense quickly each week.

You guys who are critical of Ray Edwards is Ignorant. The man hasn’t played much yet, plus you don’t no if it will be a starter or a second tier guy he’ll be up against. You aren’t in the Ravens locker room. Stop all that speculation and learn more about the game of football.

DOL, Are you hearing any concern about kickoffs? So far i seen a lot of kicks short of the end zone.

On the otherhand i doubt Koenen will have a return all year.

I agree SAMUEL these people have no idea about football. They all think that the last two years are a fluke with Ray Edwards. Everyone thinks he had an advantage with Allen at the other end what about Abraham is he not good enough for Edwards to benefit?

G, it wasnt just allen that helped edwards…the two williams’s were there too…he won’t have that kind of ‘help’ on this DL…he’s got to prove he can be the one to take the attention…not just benefit from someone else getting the attention…so yeah, we have ’some idea’ about football and how it works…

Glad some veteran DB help has arrived. Would not mind another vet CB pickup. This is now a passing league, and GB and NO spread the field on us and we still need more quality depth cover guys.

There was nothing wrong with my now-deleted post. No insults. No buzz words. Nothing inflammatory. I was simply stating my frustration with Smith keeping the fans in the dark about injuries. Last year it was Weatherspoon’s mysterious “knee injury” that caused him to miss half the season. Now Peters has a “knee injury” that we’ve received no updates on. The fans deserve to know something…anything.

It is too early to judge what Ray Edwards is all about. We gave Anderson 4 seasons to prove he was a bust. May as well give Edwards a little more than 1 preseason game to show what he can do. Frankly, you can knock him for the Pittsburg game all you want. But the bottom line is his presence was made known, hence Walker and Babs had sacks.

Yes, I am very worried about our kicking game thus far. Given reporters have to tread lightly when asking questions, I doubt we will get information from coaches on what they are thinking about the draft pick who “won” the punting job.

What looks crazy about this roster is the depth at defensive line and running back but nowhere else. I know the Falcons have used an eight man rotation on the DL, but boy are they thin everywhere else.

So I thought Kerry Meier was our # 4 wr, but it seems from the preseason that Weems is. I don’t like this because weems, while he has better speed than Meier does, but he doesn’t have the hands that Meier does & he’s shown that with the number of drops he’s had. is this a less broadcast position battle between the 2 of them for the 4th wr slot, i know they’ll both make the team but weems has seemed to get more reps, especially 1st team reps. Atlanta Falcons are making smart business choices for this team. They are picking up players at bargain basement prices that will help them reach the playoff and beyond. They also will get another CB or NB at cheap rate. This is a smart organization that uses common sense for smart business choices.Your so called fans complain and complain for what?? none of us have the money or the business sense like TD has so we need too let him do his thing. FWIW after his first 3 seasons, Edwards had 94 tackles and 13 sacks. Biermann had 106 tackles and 10 sacks. Edwards did have 14 stuffs to Biermann’s 9. (ESPN stats)

Edwards would have to be a real Jedi to account for the Walker sack as he dropped into coverage on that play and Weatherspoon rushed.

Well edwards still didn’t show any promise. The falcons front office just can’t get it right, they don’t pick up what they really need in the draft and f/a(secondary). but then they sign damaged goods(edwards) and think fans not going to notice his non-production.If his knee is holding him up this much, then we won’t see no force from him this year if any.Just don’t know about this front office.
