UPDATE: 6:35 p.m.

With center Todd McClure out for the season-opener, the Falcons signed Brett Romberg  to likely serve as the backup to second-year center Joe Hawley on Tuesday.

In order to cut the roster down to the league-mandated 80, the Falcons waived wide receiver Doug Beaumont, cornerback Kirk Belgrave,  running back Philip Sylvester, linebacker LaMarcus Thompson and linebacker Youri Yenga. The team reached an injury settlement with wide receiver Tim Buckley.

Romberg, a 6-foot-2, 293-pounder, played 10 games with the Falcons in 2009. Overall, Romberg has played in 46 NFL games and made 19 career starts.

Buckley,  who was originally signed by the Falcons as a college free agent on April 26, 2010 from Alcorn State.  He spent the entire 2010 season on the Falcons practice squad. His injury was not disclosed.

The Falcons must cut the roster down to 53 players by September 3 and may establish an eight-player practice squad on September 4.

PREVIOUS POST:

The Falcons have to cut their roster down to 80 by 4 p.m. today.

They have released running back Philip Sylvester and linebacker LaMarcus Thompson, according to their agent.

Also, not at practice today were wide receiver Doug Beaumont, wide receiver Tim Buckley and linebacker Youri Yenga.

Sylvester, a speedy back from Florida A&M, is a candidate to return on the practice squad if he does not land on another team’s active roster. In addition to the Falcons, the Dolphins and the Titans wanted to sign him as a free agent.

James Sanders — Tell your agent Gary Uberstine to call the AJC back!!! Just left my man a voice mail. We have C. Viv at practice today. He’s about to talk to TD. We should have an update later.

Also eager to hear any Sanders updates – this stats article makes a strong case for his value in pass defense:

The Falcons and TD have to get very aggressive with FA signings. This has been a big fault of TD he seems to want his draft’s to make the team and will hang with them too long! No one but him can give a flying flip! It is now or never for the FALCONS. First round playoff losses won’t do. They can’t end this season with excuses. Please get Sanders!!! Please scan the cut boards at 53 and get the Birds some help interior DL, OL and DB, please get some quality depth, because injuries will happen, you have to have guys who can play. Someone call TD and tell him to latter for being cool, lay it all on the line!

They should have added Gurode like “yesterday” if Matty ice goes down,
Falcons are done. Ryan closer to Trent Dilfer than Tom Brady.

Give Ryan credit for hitting Jones in stride on a route where the receiver was running away from him, a pass Ryan has about given up on. Don’t know what happened on the second one to Strickland.

Biermann leading the DLine in tackles again. P Jerry has 1 (a sack) in 3 games. Better put Abraham, Edwards and Biermann all out there on passing downs. Put 3 down and let Biermann stand and move into different lanes. Our LB’s don’t seem to have much pass rush ability.

My inside source tells me that Sanders will sign a 1 yr deal tonight once final players are released. Source also says Falcons have inquired about trading for a CB, no name given. Also willing to bring in Gurode if he does not sign with Seattle.

I actually know Andre Gurode (since he arrived in Dallas as a rookie). Can’t believe Jerry didn’t want to shell out dollars to help protect Romo. Whatever the case, I’m not sure the Falcons have enough cap room to afford him. There would definitely have to be addition by subtraction to bring him into the nest.
