FLOWERY BRANCH — Falcons coach Mike Smith said the Falcons will likely play their starters a significant portion of Saturday night’s game against the Steelers.
“In terms of the amount of snaps that they are going to play, I don’t know that we’ve sat down and decided,” Smith said. “But we want to keep those [starting] units in there and get them as many exposures as possible.”
Smith said the team will do some game planning, including film work, as they switch from a training-camp to regular-season schedule this week. The coach said there was no game planning for the exhibitions against the Dolphins and Jaguars.
Also, in the past, he’s wanted the starters to go through a regular halftime and then return to the action. So, if he stays with that plan, we could see the starters well into the third quarter.

Falcons center Todd McClure returned to practice on Sunday. The 12-year veteran received some "veteran rest time" from head coach Mike Smith. He'll see action against Pittsburgh. (D. Orlando Ledbetter/DLedbetter@ajc.com)

Lol at Quizz sharing a spot with Gartrell, that dude is so clumsy. What’s happened to Sidbury? He was supposed to be our future at DE. Also why the hell isn’t Palmer our 2nd tight end? Dude can catch and block solid. Franks should win nickel spot easily and take Grimes’ starting spot soon, dude can ball like I’ve been saying. Also Jerry hasn’t shown much yet, might be a bust or a good surprise this season. Steelers will be a good test for Matt Ryan and he should show his true worth against them. Go Falcons!!

Fantastic Falcon – Not sold on Reynolds? He played well vs Jags.

Runner – Jerry not shown much? I agreed up to this year, but he’s showing more mobility and did you notice that he commanded a double-team most of the Jags game and has hits on QB last two games?

@ JB, true, he is just recently coming back after a devastating injury plagued season. I guess I just expect more out of the former first round pick

Am I the only person that is not impressed by Big Ben? He has all day to throw the ball behind that big o-line.

It’s not jealous hell it’s THE pick to make in fantasy football. I’m a Falcon fan and a Ryan fan but my QB in fantasy football would be Tom Brady. If you play fantasy football you mean you would only draft Falcon players???? If so no need to even play.

Mike has got to be nuts thinking of playing starters well into this game. Pittsburgh is likely to be the most physical defense we see this year. Getting ready is one thing getting hurt is another.

Best test of the preseason to see where we really are. Our ones vs. their ones for at least 2 quarters.

will the falcons still make a play on a proven corner like Kelvin Hayden? for the nickel spot in the secondary

I can see TD giving Brian Williams a call if necessary. He knows the defensive schemes. I still believe there could be some sort of trade or late-preseason signing in the works. But heck, other than the NB spot I think the red and black are good to go. We will pressure QB, tip passes and finish sacks like never before. Here’s to Gritz Blitz 2.0!

@ Mo, its his teammate for crying out loud… you must have never been involved in sports if you’re actually defending Roddy for choosing Brady over Ryan. Ryan is as good as most quarterbacks out there and of course Roddy should say choose Matt!! It’s his teammate for crying out loud.

What are we gona do about that 57 million dollor cb that cries about a ham string each year. Let’s be real. we are 2 men short in that secondary from makeing a run for the big one: and thats with the nickle back and that right corner (what a wast of money on Robinson)

DOL, I’ve said this before, and I mean no disrespect if you really think he’s a player, Valdez has been at the party for three years and still can’t dance. IMO he is not a viable option for a back-up on the OL. I’ve seen faster more surefooted grandmothers in the roast beef line at a Piccadilly Cafeteria.

Rocket — Well Rocket Coach Boudreau really liks him. This is from a note for tomorrow:
Valdez has to make the roster because his practice squad eligibility has expired.
“Jose has as good of feet as anybody that we have,” [offensive line coach Paul] Boudreau said. “He’s good in space. He’s very smooth. His whole thing is getting [repetitions] for playing time. Each year that he’s practiced, he’s done pretty good.”

This game means nothing…..the only game that matters in against Chicago week 1. Just want everyone to come out healthy…..
