UPDATE: Falcons confirm signing.

FLOWERY BRANCH – Reggie Kelly’s career has come full circle.

Kelly, who was drafted by the Falcons in the second round (42nd overall) of the 1999 NFL draft, has signed with the Falcons, according to general manager Thomas Dimitroff.

Earlier, Fox’s Alex Marvez in a sourced report, stated that the parties had agreed to terms.

The Falcons are thin at tight end after Justin Peelle suffered a knee injury against Miami. The extent of Peelle’s injujry has not be fully disclosed.

Kelly played with the Falcons from 1999 to 2002. He developed into a solid blocking tight end while playing in Cincinnati from 2003 to 2010.

He will be reunited with Bob Bratkowski, the Falcons quarterbacks coach, who was Cincinnati’s offensive coordinator during Kelly’s tenure with the Bengals.

The Falcons worked out tight end Anthony Becht on Sunday.

DOL – are there any CB’s still out there that would be better than Owens as a backup? Maybe we can pick up Samuals when the Eagles let him go if the price is not too high.

Oh lord, well, welcome back Reggie Kelly! Solid vet now. Glad to have him.

I don’t think that Antonio Gates was available… Kelly fits the blocking TE mode that Pelle handled for us. IMO, expecting a “brand name signing” at this point is fairly unrealistic.

Peelle must really be hurt though he and Kelly are very different. Peelle is a pass catching TE, Kelly is strictly a blocker.

good pick up he can catch and block for us, we need a corner back for our nickel and dime packages badly. I like franks but there are vets on the market for cheap who can help us out

Welcome back Reggie! I like this signing and hope that he makes the roster. The running game hasn’t been the same since loosing Ben Hartsock. Kelly was a great run blocker when he was here, and he continued to be so in Cincinnati.

Sorry to hear about Peele. That guy made a lot of critical catches on those safe throws where he was going to his knees for TD and 1st downs.

First reaction:

[mumbling to self] Whuuuuuuut….?

Second reaction:

Um. Ok.

Didn’t realize Peele was hurt; he’s pretty underrated as a backup. And you have to hand it to Dimitroff that he didn’t hesitate to bring in Kelly even though his name brings back memories of really bad draft-day decisions.

But none of it matters as long as Julio Jones is healthy. (Knocks on wood) Just give Jerry Rice, Jr. the ball and watch him go.

Obviously this was also a cost effective move for a blocking TE otherwise, I mean geez man. Greg Olson could have been had… Zach Miller etc.

Some of you are complete idiots. Kelly was signed as a run blocking TE. He isn’t going to be asked to do much. He is only being asked to do what he is good at. He will be fine.

Just read where the Falcons have $1.1 million in cap space and that was before we signed Kelly. Not a whole lot left to sign anyone veteran to play nickel. Seems to me that we need some of our big guys to step up and restructure their contracts to make space. If I understand the process they don’t lose any money – just redistribute when they get it.

D-Led,

What’s up with being in talks with a HUGE player that Beau Bock is claiming? Any validity here or just a bunch of BS?
