FLOWERY BRANCH –Linebacker Akeem Dent, the Falcons third-round draft pick (91st overall), is not practicing on Sunday morning and is wearing a brace on his left knee.

Falcons coach Mike Smith will give a post-practice update on Dent and the rest of the injured players.

Here’s the Dent file:

Name: Akeem Dent

Size: 6-1, 242

College: Georgia

His production: Dent, who redshirted in 2006 after coming out of Douglass High, started all 13 games last season and had a team-best 126 tackles, including 6.5 for loss and 2.5 sacks. He also forced and recovered two fumbles. He graduated in December with a degree in housing. He played inside and outside linebacker over his college career and has experience in the 4-3 and 3-4 defenses. At Georgia, he played inside linebacker in the 3-4. He played both inside and outside in the 4-3. When he lined up outside, he played the strongside position. He was named to the All-SEC second team by the Associated Press last season.

The skinny: He completed the bench press (lifting 225 pounds 24 times) at the NFL scouting combine, but did not participate in his position drills. “He is strong and very aggressive, and when he delivers a blow, he delivers it with great force,” ESPN draft analyst Mel Kiper said. “He can be a 4-3 middle linebacker.” His favorite player growing up was former Falcons linebacker Jessie Tuggle, who announced the pick of Dent on Friday night in New York. He is represented by Atlanta agent Hadley Engelhard of Enter-Sports Management.

Hope it is not a serious injury. I can’t wait to see what he can do in game.

What does that mean…”to hell with Georgia?” Hopefully, for the good of the team and his own good, A. Dent will recover quickly and have a huge impact on the Falcons success. Why cannot we simply encourage people’s success. Go Falcons!!!!!!!!!

Hand Solo is a GT fan, he ment no harm

If I had a daughter, sir, I’d dress her in White and Gold,
And put her on the campus to cheer the brave and bold.
But if I had a son, sir, I’ll tell you what he’d do—
He would yell, ‘To hell with Georgia!’ like his daddy used to do

What a shame some people worry more about UGA than winning Championships. Its so bad, they put it in their fight song. And the sun shines on a dog’s azz every blue moon and they win something, its taken away because of cheating.

Wow, the Falcons have at least one high draft pick every year who goes down with an injury. I hope it’s not a season-ender, but it’s never good when a guy is in a knee brace less than 48 hours after a game.

I’m a huge Georgia Tech fan, but once a Bulldog becomes a Falcon they are no longer a Bulldog to me. Virtually everyone knows the words to “Ramblin’ Wreck”, but I don’t think we need to reiterate them after an ex-Dog gets injured.

I think that hand solo’s comment was more directed to the blogger posting a history lesson on mr Dent. I would say that most atlanta area fans knows who mr Dent is and who he played for in college. He was a third round pick at backup to a backup linebacker. The only reason he got a whole blog entry his he was a UGa player. Is mr Ledbetter going to post the same college histiry for evey injured player? I dont think so.

But I do wish Mr Dent will and hope the injury is not serious and hope he can get back on the field soon. I hold no ill feelings toward Mr Dent eveb thou he went to UGa and I am a Jacket fan, I am also a rabid Falcons fan!

Late Breaking news… EVERY NFL team has high draft picks that are injured every year. Its football. It happens.

I don’t understand why everyone is making such a big deal out of all these Falcons draft picks that get injured. Yes, it stinks when it happens. But, it really isn’t any more frequent for the Falcons than it is for any other team.

I’m a huge fan of both UGA and Tech (so both sides can flame me, I guess), and that makes every other team in the SEC and ACC an enemy to me.

That said, am I crazy to think the Falcons are better off getting Julio instead of A.J.? Julio just looks really strong, solid, and quick. A.J. is an amazing talent, but he didn’t seem as NFL-powerful as Julio is looking.

By the way, I really pity the Dolphins fans this year. Sure, the Falcons looked great when the starters were in there, but the Dolphins have just zero talent. That game would have gotten really ugly if it were the regular season.

As for the Falcons, the only thing I worry about is the depth at secondary (not QB, because Redman has shown he can handle the backup job). And that killer schedule. Can’t wait to get rolling for real.

I’m a diehard Jacket fan. Hate the Pups… but I’ll echo Golden… this dudes a Falcon now. I love Wire’s work ethic and his great story, but don’t want him backing up Lofton. Peterson is a runstopping beast…but for how much longer? Dent, get well soon young man.

We are seriously hoping that the injury is not serious since we like to see him play. Well I hope Dent recovers soon because many fans are waiting for him. Go Falcons, indeed.
