FLOWERY BRANCH — Defensive end Ray Edwards, the Falcons’ prized free-agent signing this offseason, had  minor knee surgery during the lockout and will not play in the exhibition season opener on Friday, head coach Mike Smith informed the media after Wednesday’s morning practice.

Edwards was in the locker room by the time the media found about his surgery. So it is not known at this time when the surgery occurred.

Smith did term the surgery as  a “minor procedure.”

Edwards has not participated in any contact drills.

“So far, he’s hasn’t done any hitting at all,” defensive line coach Ray Hamilton said. “He’s working with us during the individual period. He’s looking pretty good. He’s look lean, tough, athletic. The next step is to get him into some action.”

Edwards was signed to a five-year contract worth $30 million that included $11 million in guarantees.

He described himself as “the missing piece” to the Falcons defense after signing with the club.

Also guard Mike Johnson, who has been out with a concussion, will not play against the Dolphins.

Running back Michael Turner returned to the team and is set to practice this afternoon. Smith said that Turner will play against Miami. He missed the last two days of practice to tend to a personal matter.

Edwards joins Turner (groin), wide receiver Eric Weems (knee) and defensive tackle Jonathan Babineaux (shoulder) on the list of players who had offseason surgery during the lockout that have been announced since the start of training camp.

Swamp People – You may want to address that information on a Aints blog; then a participation or vote would be warranted.

[...] D. Orlando Ledbetter of the AJC also reports that guard Mike Johnson is expected to miss Friday night’s game due to a concussion he suffered on Sunday. Michael Turner returned to practice after undergoing off-season groin surgery and is expected to play against the Dolphins. Turner was slowed by a groin injury early last season, missing the Falcons Week 2 matchup against the Arizona Cardinals. [...]

Well Swamp, it appears that Katrina blew most of your beloved Aints fans and unwanted criminals to our city. We just need a stronger storm to blow all of you back to where you belong – THE SWAMP!

Back to football: This is a smart move by Coach Smith; he just wants his new prized DE to relax and learn the system for the upcoming season. There is no need for him to play in any of these meaningless games!

I love seeing so many Saints fans here. It means they know we are the better team. That’s why they have to talk trash before the season starts because after Sep. 11th they’ll run and hide, just like last season.
Everyone knows the depth of the Saints has taken a big hit the last two seasons and this year they are looking to start as many as five new players on that “vaunted” defense. All I have to say is that you better hope Drew remains upright because that’s your entire team.

This is bigger news then the Falcons are making it out to be. There is a reason Edwards was very average last year and now the truth is coming out. No way that this “procedure” will not have an impact. Gosh why do we always sign guys that have issues and don’t turn out to be the player we hoped i.e D Robinson.

@RIZEUPP – Good question, however this is the NFL, baby. Hey buddy, it’s real simple look at it this way the USA manufactures every year approximately 1,000,000 — 1 million very good football players so called atheletes. Drill that number down or up to the NFL you have 1,600 + players divided between 32 teams that are “THE ELITES, GREATEST FOOTBALL ATHELETES ON THE PLANET” – hey even those guy’s need clear-up minor surgeries “floaters” occasionally. Big “Ray” will be jus fine “BELEIVE ME” – you will be impressed with his play!!!!! Big Abe is going to be the happiest guy on the team next season! is my bet!!!

Go Falcons

the espn power rankings are out ! how did the failcans drop from #2 to #6 while the saints moved up from #5 to # 4 ??????? according to y’all we’re older , slower and have lost considerable depth! how can this be? the writer for the bleacher report thinks they got it wrong tho, he thinks the saints should be in the #2 spot – oh well!
