FLOWERY BRANCH – While it’s too early to declare a winner for the starting right guard position, Garrett Reynolds appears to have a commanding early lead.

With Harvey Dahl off to the St. Louis Rams, Reynolds and Mike Johnson were set to compete for the open spot. Reynolds is listed as the starter on the “unofficial” depth chart released by the team for the exhibition season opener against Miami at 7:30 p.m.  Friday at the Georgia Dome.

Reynolds opened training camp working with the first team and has not relinquished that role. Johnson’s bid was sidetracked last Thursday when he suffered a concussion. He’s in the league’s concussion protocol and is officially day-to-day.

He did not practice on Monday.

Reynolds is not taking anything for granted.

“Just worry about myself and my own technique,” Reynolds said. “I see things every day on film. I write down anything I need to fix. I look back over it and try to focus on that the next day when I get back on the field.”

Reynolds, a fifth-round draft pick in 2009, is huge at 6-foot-7 and 310 pounds for a guard. He was drafted as a tackle, but has been trained to play both spots over the last two seasons.

“I feel pretty good in there,” Reynolds said. “I’ve been getting use to it the last couple of years.”

Johnson was taken in the third round of the 2010 draft and he’s 6-6, 304.

While he’s out, Reynolds will get a chance to play.

“There are still a couple of things I need to keep working on,” Reynolds said. “I feel comfortable in there communicating with the guys. But it’s still a work in progress.”

The winner will have a huge role to fill because Dahl was such an aggressive and nasty player. Reynolds believes he can provide that same level of nastiness.

“I learned a lot from Harvey and watching him play,” Reynolds said. “I try to play the same way that Harvey always played.”

Random notes: the first depth chart of the year nearly always reflects the status quo from last year. Peria Jerry was limited to backup duty in 2010, so he enters in that role in 2011. Peterson was a starter in 2010, so he’s still listed as the starter. In general, the new guys are listed behind the returning guys on the first depth chart. They have to earn their spot.

The one exception is that Julio Jones is already the starting WR. He has already earned it – Julio has taken our entire secondary to school since the start of camp. It begs the question of whether he’s THAT good, or whether our secondary is in trouble. Tony Gonzalez says it’s not the secondary – Julio really is that good.

The odd thing on Peria Jerry isn’t that he’s listed #2. It’s that he’s listed at the 3-tech while Vance Walker is listed at the 1-tech behind Peters. Peria was drafted to be our starting 1-tech, while Vance Walker was told the day he was drafted that the Falcons wanted him to play the 3-tech behind Babs. Perhaps that’s another minor mix-up on the depth chart?

Interesting that Rafael Priest is listed as a backup safety. I’ve seen him get many more reps at CB than at safety so far in camp.

Some responses to questions and comments, based on what I’ve seen in camp:

Pretty Boy Floyd – Garrett Reynolds and Mike Johnson each have prior experience at both the guard and tackle position. That much is a toss-up between them. At least for the first depth chart, Reynolds gets the edge in that the right side has been his side – he has practiced at RG and RT with the Falcons over the last two years, while Johnson was mainly at LG in camp last year.

D-Led – they never list more than one holder to start the year. Parrish and Kerry Meier took turns holding for Matt Bryant in today’s field goal drills. The competition isn’t over yet.

Shaggy – the K/P from USC has already been cut. So has OT Rob McGill (Louisiana Tech), which took me a bit by surprise. I’m wondering if that was an injury settlement and the team simply left out the details in the press release.

Fantastic Falcon Fanatic – Dent will be second string at one of the LB positions in an upcoming depth chart. He’s almost a lead pipe lock to make the team. Rodgers easily beats out Smith at RB. He’ll be battling Snelling for the #2 spot. Again, the first chart always lists the new guys behind the old guys. In reality, Rodgers is already #2 or #3 while Smith is on the bad side of the final roster cut trying to play his way back in the door. There’s a strong chance both Sidbury and Matthews make the cut. A “surprise” WR won’t happen unless someone gets hurt or unless the team decides to expand the group and keep six of them. But they haven’t done that since the start of the 2008 season.

The Fantastic Falcon Fanatic — He will make team as No. 2 MLB and get cross-trained outside, while playing on special teams. Meier’s knee is holding up well. He has not missed any practice. He had an awesome practice on Monday. It’s going to be a tough battle for Johnson and Smith. Matthews is looking pretty good. Sidbury and Davis are fighting for spots. I don’t see a real surprise there, but the Harvey kid is going to show out in these exhibition games. I think he has some practice squad eligibility left.

I am from Atlanta, but I currently live in Cincy. For that reason, those are the two teams I know most about. I used to think AJ was head and shoulders above JJ, but now I am glad we got JJ instead of AJ. After seeing reports from both camps, I think JJ is the more well rounded player and a better fit for ATL. I have read several reports from non Atlanta media that have said JJ looks like he has been in the league for 3-5 years. He has made some big plays in camp already, some while being covered by 1st team DBs. I think AJ will be a great player too, but there isn’t much he can do that Julio can’t. On the other hand, there is a lot Julio can do that AJ can’t. JJ is going to contribute so much more to the run game than AJ could. He is also able to break more tackles than AJ can. I think AJ will be the better pure receiver, though not by much. Julio will be the better all around player by contributing on every play and not just the plays where he is thrown to.

@D. Led – I am a regular critic of yours, but I just wanted to compliment your recent reporting. I can tell you’ve stepped it up a bit, and I just thought I should give credit where it is due – it’s only fair.

If I remember, Reynolds is a nephew of Gene (Hacksaw) Reynolds. There won’t be a problem with him playing mean, and nasty.

the schedule is way to hard this year and this franchise has had 3 winning seasins in a row and the saints and tampa bay and carolina got better,so this season will be awful, but cant wait till 2012.

Who ever said that Julio has better hands than Green hasnt obviously never watched any of their games in college. Love Julio and all but dont say dumb stuff like that. AJ was by far the best college receiver and was hands down the better “8″ of the two. Should have done more to get Green, but i will take JJ as long as he doesnt drop balls like he did in college.

Who drafts special teamers in the THIRD round?! If he can’t beat out Koy Wire, he’ll be an instant bust.
We needed some solid depth, emerging star that high in the draft and we got nuthin. Ugh.
