Atlanta Falcons cornerback Brent Grimes, left, and safety William Moore, right, tackle Green Bay Packers wide receiver James Jones during 2nd quarter action at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta on Sunday, Nov. 28, 2010. Curtis Compton ccompton@ajc.com
FLOWERY BRANCH – Falcons cornerback Brent Grimes signed his first-round tender worth $2.61 million and was on the practice field for the Thursday evening practice.
All of the rest of the Falcons non-unrestricted free agents – Quarterback John Parker Wilson, wide receiver Eric Weems and defensive tackle Vance Walker – signed last week and were attending meetings and taking mental reps at practices.
Grimes, who was a Pro Bowl alternate and played in the game, had five interceptions which was tied for the team lead with safety William Moore.
In 2010, Grimes was targeted a league-high 119 times by opponents (according to STATS, Inc.) Grimes answered the challenge, posting an NFC-best and a franchise-record 23 passes defensed to go with his five interceptions.
There is nothing new to report on running back Jason Snelling, an unrestricted free agent.

There is no crow for D-Led to consume. He merely pointed out that the other RFA had signed tenders and were in camp for meetings, classroom work, and on the sidelines at practice. Brent chose to stay away. Simple as that.

For all of you DOL bashers, take note. In his article the other day, the headline was phrased as a QUESTION, not a statement of fact. The headline was ASKING whether BG turned his nose up at $2.61 mil.
Next, as a RFA, BG was well within his right to sit back and wait to see if another team would make him an offer. THIS DOESN’T MEAN HE WANTED TO LEAVE. By having another team step in and make an offer, it would force the falcons to match the offer or let him leave in exchange for a 1st rounder. This latter point was CLEARLY EXPLAINED in DLed’s post.
But of course, everyone took it as DLed trying to run Grimey out of town and then it all blew up for no reason. Of course his new agents, Condon and Dogra advised him to wait it out. It’s not a “holdout” if you’re not under contract. So again, everybody is up in arms thinking DLed said Grimes was a holdout. NOT TRUE. Why wouldn’t he want to wait and see if he could get more money? He earned the right to do so.
In the end, I’m glad this is all over, at least I hope so.

Cuts will be made and we will have a little more cap space. There is 90 men on the roster right now (correct me if I’m wrong) and there is a game next week so that number may drop to 75-ish players. If that indeed happens then look for Thomas and Co. to re-sign Snelling for one year and possibly bring in either another WR or maybe even a DB, preferrably a safety. “The Sandman” and “The Missouri Hammer” need a seasoned veteran backup. That’s a thought for second!
The 6-foot-3, 230-pound Mays, a second-round pick in 2010, replaced veteran Michael Lewis in Week 4 last year and looked like a draft-day steal, collecting 11 tackles and making a highlight-reel touchdown on a block-punt recovery in the end zone in first NFL start at Atlanta.
But his other five starts weren’t so memorable. He didn’t have an interception and defended just two passes, displaying a lack of ball skills and play-making ability, tags draft experts gave him out of USC. In college, Mays, a first-team All-American as a senior, had just five interceptions in 50 starts.

At the risk of DOL banning me yet again for pointing out the obvious, why is this guy still covering the most popular and successful team in the state? He is constantly scooped on stories concerning the Falcons and I’m not talking about other papers scooping him. This guy gets scooped by other AJC reporters and by fans on his blog!!!
Just when you think DOL couldn’t lower the bar on integrity for the AJC he manages to drop that bar into the sewer. Manufacturing a story out of nothing like DOL did did with the Grimes “holdout” was bad enough, but then he manages to insert himself into the story and continued to report on it.
Ignoring even the most basic journalistic rules like DOL did would result in firing or at the very least being moved to the obits at even a small town newspaper. The brain trust at the AJC will probably give DOL a promotion. Why should they care, it’s the fans of the Falcons who suffer.
I’m sure my truth filled msg will result in another ban from DOL. It’s sad that the most racist hate filled excrement spewed on AJC blogs don’t even get removed, but point out DOL has no talent and even worse no integrity and you get banned.

If Grimes has another year like last year, the money will take care of itself. As for his wife, she will obviously take care of the money no matter what the amount is. I wish Grimesy had come in and attended meetings knowing that he most likely would not be offered by anyone else, but at least he’s in now. He just needs to go out and prove that last year was not a fluke. I think he will, but we’ve seen a lot of one year wonders so he needs to prove his worth on the field.

Not only is BG our best corners he is one of THE!!!! best corners in the leauge. 5 int’s and two of them from Drew Sleeze. He is also underrated in my opinion. Not a shutdown D.Revis type but a playmaker type corner. Why did the Falcons only sign him to a 1-yr deal. Yea I’m happy He’s back but will we have to do this dance again a yr from now?? Come on TD!!!!!! Look for grimes to make even more plays also because 1) the edwards addition, 2) Not only does he have to back up his talk now but Miko’s as well, 3) he wants to prove to the falcons that this 1 yr $2.6 million isn’t enough and I agree. Top 5 redzone defense

I am stoked that Grimes signed his contract. I hope he has the same succes he had last year, and then a long term deal can be reached with him. He deserves good money for what he does on the field. I just cant stand his wife getting involved. Kurt Warners wife almost killed his career a decade or so ago. I hope Grimes can teach his wife to know her role.

So, if he signed a one year tender, does that make him an UFA after this season? If so, I hate that we didn’t work out a long term deal with him. If we were to get another stud corner down the road, he would be the perfect nickel back and he is at least solid in the starting CB spot. I don’t really know if he is Pro Bowl caliber, but he made the Pro Bowl…so I guess he is.
I love our chances this season, but the schedule is brutal. We might be a better team better than last year but only go 10-6.

I like grimes and think he is a good player I think he is greatful and wants to be a falcon. If you could sit out two weeks to see if another company would pay you more I think 99% of us would do it. It did not affect anything. Some posters need to grow up. I love DOL but I also questioned his motive. It was a little slopppy (still my man) just my thoughts. Believe it or not Grimes is the best option. He is young and will grow with this team. All he has to do is keep gettin better which I believe he will. This team is stacked and built for the future. Be patient. We made a big enough splash and remained prudent. Why bring a 30 yr old in and pay 8 million dollars per. We have been getting by on smoke and mirrors but that is about to change due to tweaks and not greedy spending the eagles made ( just see the miami heat) it takes a team and not one or two superstars and no supporting players. People think before you post. Not mad at you DOL you just suprised me.

“All of the rest of the Falcons non-unrestricted free agents …”
Does this mean restricted free agents?

D-Led never used the word HOLDOUT in is article. Grimes’ dumb wife called into a midday show(which noone can hear) and accused D-led of attacking her husband.
Good writting, a dumb wife and Grimes better not get burned now he’s gotten paid.

DLed constantly gives us information, articles, an occasional opinion and a place to discuss our thoughts. The attitude of the asshats on this blog is the reason I left Atlanta 8 years ago after spending my entire life there. It is the hateful, chip on your shoulder, entitlement mentality that has destroyed Atlanta (and this country) and is just crappy to read jackwagons criticize the very guy giving you all the Falcons information he knows and a place to chat about it..as you sit in your mom’s basement with your pants on the ground typing away thinking you know more than TD.
I do miss Fellini’s Pizza though.

Seriously? You have just as many typo’s and misspelled words as DLed!! So now Grimes can’t get burned because his wife went off on DLed? We know you were never an athlete, because if you were, you wouldn’t say such stupid things. But one thing we can count on is DLed waiting for his next opportunity to take a shot at Grimes. Classy! Some of you just don’t get it, and never will so I wont repeat myself. Bottom line…we don’t know the whole story! I can tell you there is definitely more to this story and I hope it comes to light. (Stop deleting my comment DLed!)

Snelling inked his deal, he will be a falcon… Thank goodness, we needed RB depth. He’s a solid back-up for “The Burner”. Also Brent Grimes’ wife is a dumb woman. She must think she’s a real house wife or something. Hopefully Brent made that crazy bat sign a prenup. You seen a picture of her? She’s a dog

You Failcons fans kill me with that bs about the Saints won the Super Bowl because of Hurricane Katrina. So in other words if a city is effected by a natural disaster the NFL shows them special consideration and Gives them a championship? That’s the most stupid ass thing I ever heard. Miami gets hit often by hurricanes so much so that the nickname of the university of Miami is the HURRICANES using some of you Failcons fans logic the Dolphins should win the super bowl often. I tell you what if thats the case how come the NFL didn’t hook y’all up with a super bowl win after the olympic bombings which was actually a terrorist attack. And if a natural disaster suppose to make a team better y’all better pray for one. Who Dat Baby???
