FLOWERY BRANCH –

Cornerbacks Christopher Owens and Dominique Franksare playing at Grimes’ left cornerback spot, but will battle for the nickel back position.

“It will be a good battle all the way through training camp,” Smith said.

Owens ended his rookie season as a starter at left cornerback. He opened last season at nickel back, but an injury slowed him and he was replaced by Brian Williams.

After Williams was injured, Owens played in the playoff game and didn’t have one of his better performances.

Franks, was a fifth round pick (135th overall) in the 2010 draft. He played in two games and had one interception last season.

The Falcons are counting on Owens and Franks to continue to improve under assistant coaches Tim Lewis (secondary) and Alvin Reynolds (defensive backs).

@Moses, I don’t think Grimes ever looked as bad as Owens did last year.

And again, I’m not looking to completely cut ties with Owens, just want more competition for that position.

OUR IMPROVED PASS RUSH WILL HELP OUT OUR SECONDARY. BUT, I PREFER FRANKS TO WIN THAT JOB! OWENS GOT EXPOSED LAST YEAR. YES, EVEYONE IS ENTITLE TO A BAD GAME. BUT, WHAT CONTRIBUTION DID OWENS MAKE ALL YEAR LAST YEAR? AT SOME POINT, “YOU ARE WHO YOU ARE”! I WILL GO WITH THE YOUNGER GUY, FROM THE PASS-HAPPY BIG 12!

Is there anyone out there that thinks Brian Van Gorder is the right person for the Defensive Coordinator job? As a matter of fact, i really don’t like our choices for coordinators. Really wish we had people that attack on either side of the ball, and could maximize the players talents…..just saying!
