Falcons guards Justin Blalock (left) and Tyson Clabo help Ryan to his feet after a hit against Tampa Bay (Curtis Compton / ccompton@ajc.com)
FLOWERY BRANCH – Justin Blalock , who’s been a starter since his rookie season in 2007, has agreed to terms on a six-year contract to return to the Falcons on Sunday.
Blalock was drafted in the second round (39th overall) of the 2007 draft.
He struggled his rookie season, but things starting to come together for him under veteran NFL line coach Paul Boudreau.
He’s extremely durable and has started 62 of a possible 64 regular-season games.
Also, Blalock had a 41 on the Wonderlic test and is a smart and heady player.
After practice on Saturday, Falcons coach Mike Smith stated his desire to have Blalock re-signed.
The Falcons have already agreed to terms with starting right tackle Tyson Clabo, but lost starting right guard Harvey Dahl to the St. Louis Rams.
Blalock can not practice with the team until Thursday when the league calendar year starts or if the new collective bargaining agreement is ratified and the year starts sooner.
The only internal free agent left is cornerback Brent Grimes, who is a restricted free agent and has a first-round tender.

I have been waiting on this signing. Now I can relax.. Good job!!! Let’s give credit where credit is due. TD you have done a great job. Being the GM is not an easy job. Thankfully we have a good GM that is not only putting a championship contending team on the field now but also building for the future.

One more piece of the puzzle in place. Maybe they should slide him back over to his natural spot on the right side and let the young guys battle it out for the LG spot.

Been a fascinating free agency/trade season the last few days, and for all the noise created by Philly, the Jets, the Patriots and Carolina, I love what TD has done. Didn’t worry about making a big splash, just quietly resigned the guys we wanted to keep and filled our biggest hole at DE with Edwards.
Let go of the guys we needed to: Norwood (never on the field), Koenen (good, but overpriced now), Dahl (see Koenen), Jamaal (Rich McKay’s last huge bad draft decision) and Jenkins (steady, great blocker, good teammate, but not worth the #1 pick). Don’t know yet about Snelling’s status, but hope we keep him.

I’m guessing the fact that Ryan rarely gets sacked except off the edge or via safety blitzs, OR that the Falcons have had one of the top running games since TD and company arrived doesn’t really count in your world??!!
And since it obviously is unimportant that an OLine has a comraderie, I’m thinking you must have a all-pro left guard available and ready to step (for less money) and quickly learn the Falcons’ system and the other linemen’s moves.

but we missed the boat not going after ex-raider cb asomugha (sp?). guy like that comes around once or twice every 20 years. the secondary, not the pass rush, is our most glaring weakness. with a guy like asomugha, we could have manufactured more pressure via blitzes confidently because we’d have had shutdown abilities in the secondary. oh, well.

I agree our PASS PROTECTION was not great and can be vastly improved BUT..Our running game is a different story. Which starts with the O Line. I like this. I thought we would lose 2/3 of our offensive line free agents. I love what this team is doing. I would like to resign Snelling, but RB is the easiest position to replace. Heck, even Tiki would be an ok backup to play a few downs for Turner and Quizz.
I would like to get Grimes locked down because (contrary to Saints fans beliefs) WE had the best defense in the NFC South and Grimes was a big part of that.
While is is true that the Aints were 4th in Total Net Yards (as they will be quick to point out), that stat is meaningless in football. The ONLY stat that really matters in football is Points Allowed. If you want proof of this, 8 out of the top ten teams that allowed the fewest points were in the playoffs. The two teams that allowed the fewest points were in the super bowl. The Falcons were the 5th best defense in the NFL. They were better than the Saints and the Jets. The media would have you believe our defense was a division II college team defense. They have been much maligned by the so called “experts”. The truth is, they were very good. The only thing the stats tell us is that it took teams fewer yards to score MORE points on the Saints. The Falcons play a bend but don’t break defense which is why they give up a lot of yards and not a lot of points.
Having added a decent pass rushing strong side DE (something we haven’t had since Patrick Kearney), this defense got a lot better. That’s right folks. the best defense in the NFC South got even better. I am excited for this season to get started.

Excellent job by TD to retain 2 of the 3 UFAs on the line, Clabo being the most critical. As much as I would love to keep Snells the reality is he can be a starter for a handful teams, New England comes to mind and he’d be a perfect fit in their system.

Saints Fan, I pity you. If we could dump a few more scrubs we call starters, we could just make REAL Saints fans vanish. 13-3 has nothing to do with the o-line. It’s because Ryan can scramble, and we have clutch receivers. And a fairly decent TE in Gonzales. I mean our record looks good in this scrubby NFC south where there are no REAL opponents above mediocrity, but those teams are good cannon fodder I suppose. Beards. The O-line should all grow beards. BEARDS ROCK. Also when the Falcons use John Parker Wilson in the Wildcat formation, look out. Opposing D’s will crumble. They won’t know what to do. As I’ve said, dump the scrubs and we will shine.

I think we will miss Dahl in the run game, but the Falcons were ready to play 2 guys who were backups as starters if they needed to which means they have confidence in those guys. Hopefully they can step right in. I think that is going to be the most interesting position to watch in training camp. That is really the only starting position that is up for grabs right? Maybe Peterson and Nicholas could be a battle. From the reports I am reading out of camp, some of the undrafted rookies could battle for the nickle back spot.

I AGREE WITH SLY TY! CHEERS! CHEERS! FOR THOMAS DIMITROFF!! EXECUTIVE OF THE YEAR! GREAT JOB ON RE-SIGNING THE OLD TEXAS LONGHORN, JUSTIN BLALOCK. BRENT GRIMES SHOULD BE NEXT, UNLESS WE MAKE A RUN AT ANTONIO CROMARTIE! GRIMES WORKED HIS WAY UP, THE OLD FASHIONED WAY: HARD WORK! LET’S GET HIM IN CAMP! THEN, WE’RE SET!

Maybe, just maybe they have not signed Grimes because they are talking Cromartie or Samuel. Just saying. TD never tipped his hand about Julio and the draft….maybe they are doing the same thing now.

Dimitroff has done well, but we still need another DB even if we sign Grimes. We need a big corner who can bump & run with the WR. C.Owens is no match for any NFC or AFC receivers. Get M.Ryan to restructure and go get Cromartie (CB) and M.Floyd (WR).Make a splash like the Eagles. They are definitely the team to beat in the NFC.

Many of you guys on here may disagree, but the Falcons were a Wild Card at best without Jason Snelling. He is versatile and always plays extremely hard. Personally I like him better than Turner. MT is starting his decline. Snelling always gets the job done when Turner is out. They need to get him signed.

D-Led – WHY would you say that Grimes is the ONLY free agent the Falcons have not re-signed when SNELLING is a free agent who has not re-signed. WHY DO WE HAVE THE WORST SPORTS COVERAGE IN THE COUNTRY? First, the AJC’s irresponsible coverage of the Thrashers, now we are stuck with this idiot covering the Falcons.

I can’t help but laugh at so many Falcons fans, which is sad being that I am one. I constantly hear stuff like “Turner is starting his decline” and “Abraham is past his prime” being said by the media and by fans.
Turner was injured most of the year last year and still led the NFC in rushing even though we had 8 games against the top 10 defenses in the NFL. He has had surgery to correct that injury and will be even better this year. I would like to sign another RB to take some of the pressure off of him. I like Snelling, but if he doesn’t sign I am not worried. RB is by far the easiest position to replace.
JA may be getting older, but statistically he hasn’t lost a step yet. 2 out of his last 3 seasons were the best in his career. Last year he led the NFL in sacks by a DE even though he had NO help on the other side. JA is probably the most under appreciated player in the NFL. Now that we have Edwards, that means Biermann and Sidbury will be in constant rotation to give JA a break on running downs. JA will just have to worry about one thing…. getting to the QB. If he can continue to get 13 sacks a year, I don’t care if he is 97 years old.

I agree with SaintsFansAreFunny that MT’s “decline” is far overstated but that said, I think the Falcons rush him too much. I don’t think these injuries happen by accdient. Snelling provides a change of pace and something to keep Turner’s legs fresh. If he bolts, we are definitely going to need someone to fill those shoes.
But I agree with ohyeah…..we NEED UPGRADES IN CB!!! Asomugha, Joseph, Cromartie, etc etc…….while overall I put great faith in this management, it does worry me that they don’t seem to think that this position is a weakness.

By the way, how is it that even the most casual Falcons Fans are aware that Free Agent Jason Snelling has not yet re-signed with the team, but the Falcons very own BEAT WRITER who GETS PAID to follow the team, thinks that Brent Grimes is the only unsigned free agent. First “C-Viv” was paid to LIE about the Thrashers, now “D-LED” is compensated for incompetence. Welcome to Atlanta.

They haven’t signed Grimes yet because he is a RFA. They don’t have to sign him right away. They are seeing who will bite and give him a contract and ATL will more than likely sign it. They are letting the market determine Grimes’ value as opposed to possibly overpaying him.

If I had to lose one of the 3 OL guys it would be Dahl … he is a mauler but he had too many penalties last year. Defensive linemen got in his head. I remember he had a crucial penalty in our loss to the Saints on 12/26. Now Baker and Mike Johnson need to step it up. I like the moves so far. Good job.

Have you considered that the line is the first line of defense. With a better pass rush up front, it helps all the DB’s tremendously. The QB will not be able to freely get that ball down field to his receivers.
I like Dimitroff’s approach to address the D-Lines weakness up front first and then assess the DB’s and Corners from there. Grimes is a very fine play maker and should benefit greatly from the addition of Ray Edwards. Dunta too.

If Grimes gets away we get a 1st round pick. That’s about a year away and if we choose a CB with the 28th to 32nd pick we still have to wait 2 to 3 more years for any experienced results. Sign him and quit waiting for other teams to make an offer. Make him feel wanted so he might want to stay here when his next contract comes up. He has developed into a good CB and should not be treated with any less respect just because he was undrafted. We definitely need him after loosing Brian Williams and the awful play of Chris Owens against Green Bay. I think Owens play was the main cause in the GB loss. I hope it was a just bad day and not his best effort.

UGA 1999, we need a WR. What if Philly keep all CB. I know to beat two good corners, our running game and TE must be on key. I agree with the CB, but I think another WR is just as important as getting a RB. I think we are solid on RB.

Don’t get me wrong! I’m happy with the Edwards pickup. And I agree: it all starts with the line! If you have a bad defensive line, then the flashiest set of CBs and safeties doesn’t usually do you a damn bit of good. But why can’t we have both? Just one CB to push everyone currently in the lineup wouldn’t be a bad thing, would it? Let’s not create a false choice dillemma.
