Falcons release former first-rounders Anderson, Jenkins

Jamaal Anderson got one of his 4.5 sacks last season against Seattle. (Associated Press).

FLOWERY BRANCH – The Falcons cleared $7.8 million under the salary cap by releasing veteran defensive lineman Jamaal Anderson and wide receiver Michael Jenkins on Friday.

Anderson and Jenkins were both former first-round picks.

Anderson taken eighth overall in the 2007 drafted and never blossomed in to the sackmaster that the Falcons envisioned when he was selected. The Falcons passed on future stars Patrick Willis and Darrelle Revis. Willis, a linebacker, went 11th to San Francisco and Revis, a cornerback, went to the Jets with the 14th pick.

Willis has been to four Pro Bowls and has been named an All-Pro three times. Revis has been to three Pro Bowls and has been named All-Pro two times.

Anderson played in 60 games and made 47 starts, but had just 3.5 sacks (The Falcons officially have him for 3.5 sacks. Pro-Football-Reference.com has him for 4.5 sacks. The Falcons gave the credit for the sack against Seattle to Jonathan Babineaux.)

Jenkins was selected with the 29th pick in the 2004 draft.

He was a mainstay in the offense, but never amassed over 100 yards receiving in a game. He had a career-high 53 catches in 2007 and a career-high in yards of 777 in 2008.

Jenkins’ future was in doubt after the Falcons traded five picks to move up 27 spots in the draft to select wide receiver Julio Jones with the sixth pick of the 2011 draft.

With the extra cap room, the Falcons will likely be able to pursue free-agent defensive end Ray Edwards.

Yes!!! They finally got rid of that bum (Anderson), we will however miss his run defense, we definitely need some dept (soon) on both the offensive and defensive lines….Going to miss Jenkins, he had some potential, was an okay possession receiver with some speed.

The best news of the week. Thank goodness. Truly addition by subtraction! Now get some body in here to help John Abraham.

Not going to miss Jenkins neither. He never really put fear in no opposing defense. Never was one to draw double coverage. Would rather they dumped Harry Douglas also. A Bust.

A prime example of a player who should have stayed for his senior year – Jamaal Anderson and Jenkins. The Falcons blew 2 first round draft choices on these under achieving under class men. This is the difference between the ‘cons and a winner like Green Bay. We need better analyzers of talent.

someone suggests get a speedy back and then says get marion barber. another says get randy moss to stretch the field. when matt ryan doesn’t even throw a good deep ball. and moss can stretch the field about as well as tony g. maybe 10 years ago. numb nuts.

we need talent in the trenches! great teams have studs on the line. who do we have? we need a playmaker at corner! the falcons have so many needs its making my head spin! don’t forget lofton had to have offseason surgery on both knees!!!!!!!

the falcons are looking like superbowl contenders. the offense is gona be top 10, jacquizz rodgers was the best pick in the whole draft for taking him in the 5th, he will give us speed and versatility. will be a fan favorite by the end of the year. all we need now is a good 3rd reciever, a slot guy who has speed and can catch well. also a couple adds on defense like another CB and DE that can platoon with bierman, i like ray edwards but i dont want him if he is askin for over $5 mill, bierman is good and we can sign a cheaper DE and get about the same production. ill throw out a couple names for a WR/CB/DE when i check out some available FA later

These moves were long overdue…
I think both contributed in the own way, but no where near enough for the money they made and the expectation of their draft position.

They both will help a team because they can make plays as a WR and a DT… but it will be at a greatly reduced price. They can not be 1 or 2 at their position or it will kill your team. Like it did to the Falcons.

Gotta be honest. You have to make sacrifices to get to the top. The Falcons are angling to make a big splash in free agency and they needed cash to do that. So Norwood, gone Anderson, gone Jenkins, gone. I like Michael Jenkins but let’s be honest, he dropped a lot of passes. Anderson was a force defending the run but never quite found his way to the quarterback. And Norwood has great hands and blazing speed but was a gamble after the injury last year. The Falcons are getting really close to the number they need to attract a top free agent. Strange that in this “speed dating” free agency no word yet on the top players involved. Look for the birds to land at least one of them. And it will be a defensive player, the offense is loaded.

Depending on how a couple of the rookies pan out, I’d take JA98 back at the league minimum. He has zero burst and no tools to penetrate, but damn if he isn’t an immovable rock on run D. Still, I’d give even the undrafted FAs a hard look before that happened.

For me, Jenkins’ legacy will be three catches: Catching Matt Ryan’s first NFL pass (for TD), that clutch grab with one second left against the Bears to set up Elam’s game-winner, and the third-down catch against the Ravens (on seemingly the same pattern), that he caught with just three or four of his fingertips, to set up the Ryan-to-White game-winner. After seven seasons, though, you’d like to be able to say more about a receiver’s game than, “Boy, what a blocker.” Wish him the best elsewhere.

Now go get Osi.

jenkins needed to go, mediocre just doesn’t cut it at the highest and he wasn’t going toget better. part of my routine-’I'm so old I remember when being able to catch the ball was more important than vertical leap or what you look like, today steve largent wouldn’t be allowed to sit at the diner’s counter and would be made to sit at the back of the bus’
anderson did not fill the spot of DE stereotype, however, watching that guy push people around cause log jams and confusing that altered the plays of other teams and increasing the positive stats of everyone around him, i don’t feel good about the release, he should’ve been used in a way that worked well for who and what he is, like so many big guys that fit the part but can’t or won’t block can be out performed by a smaller player that doesn’t look like he fits the part but will block, without penalties and without the need to play dirty, and set a teammate up for success,

Harry’s injury takes two years to heal fully. He should be physically restored now. Before his injury he was the most explosive player on the roster. Kerry Meier was turning heads last summer before his injury so, he might be that 5th reciever. Also, Weems should get more snaps in the offense. I’d like to see Finn bulked up as a backup TE, Tony don’t block while Finn blocks and catches (less than 5 mil. than TG)

None of this blows my mind. I kind of wish they kept Jenkins around for insurance. When he’s on, he’s decent. But there is a clear drop-off in production between him and Roddy. Also everyone acts like Tony Gonzalez is some broken down cripple. I think with Julio helping to spread the field, it will loosen up coverage along the sidelines for Tony. Add in a proven running game that can get the job done later in the year and on the road: and this is an offense that can do some damage. If the Falcons are one and done in the playoffs this year, its the play-calling not the talent.

I would prefer for the Falcons to TRADE for Osi Umenyiora, and sign Asomugha. Then taylor the rest of the cap around those two deals. ESPN Adam Schefter did just say there is a new team in the running for Asomugha and no one knows who that team is (not the Cowboys). With all of the NFC getting better in the receiving game (remember when NFC used to be full of great running backs), the Falcons need a play maker on defense who is one of the best in their position.

Don’t worry about Jamaal Anderson’s future. Somebody that runsa 3-4 defense will pick him up. And Jenkins will play somewhere this year.
Don’t fall in love with DE Edwards. The rest of the Vikngs D-line made him look better than he is. So far Dimitroff and company are right on schedule so don’t panic before the team has even gotten their pads on.
Finally, all of you out there that want Randy Moss must be suffering from dimentia. Throughout his career he only puts out when he wants, admits to taking plays off, and at this stage in his career will underperform and be over paid.
Hey, the Falcons are coming off a 13-3 record, not a 3-13. Let management do what they do. They’ve been wildly successful so far in re-making this team.

According to Viking Update
http://min.scout.com/2/1090000.html

Since the draft, the Falcons and Edwards have been linked. Yet, as the story currently goes, the Falcons not only aren’t going to sign Edwards, there may be something they learned in their due diligence that has turned them off of the free agent defensive end.

According to the bow-tie crowd in Atlanta, the Falcons cooled on the idea of offering Edwards a huge contract and believe his will land in Philadelphia. The Falcons are rumored to be more concerned about spreading money around to sign some of their own UFAs, as opposed to raising the bar on re-signing future free agents by throwing eight figures of guaranteed money at “an outsider” that wasn’t part of their 2010 success.

OK UGA1999 are you in ATL or something??? Like there could be a lot of factors in this. 1. You could be a closeted saints fan just making up some name to pull our leg. 2. You could be delusional and really think nnamdi is coming. 3. You have something backwards, as we’re going after osi and your getting nnamdi twisted. 4. Could be what I jus said about the conference just being for the players we’re resigning. 5. You could have nothing better to do but get everyone excited and get attention. or 6. YOU COULD BE TELLING THE TRUTH WHERE 99.9% OF PEOPLE IN HERE DON’T BELIVE YOU. lol! We’ll have to wait and see. If we never were in the hunt for nnamdi and he signs with the jets or something I would just love to here your explanation though. lol!

Why wouldn’t you resign Peterson? The cost doesn’t affect the cap, and he can play all 3 positions in case of an injury. He is no risk, and provide depth at a cost that doesn’t impact the team.

A healthy Sproles does not scare me anywhere near the way a healthy Bush did. The only guy we had that could even come close to keeping up with Bush last year was a rookie LB that couldn’t stay on the field.

I’m torn between Blalock and Dahl…you never hear anything about Blalock, which is a great thing for an O-lineman and Dahl is just nasty, another great thing. haev’t seen enough of Mike Johnson to say he can fill that role of a nasty guard. Grimes you’ll tender, Weems is an “eh” because he’s only special teams…maybe Rodgers can fill that roll. Snelling is a decent backup but you don’t pay a lot of money for big.slow back up running backs.

Grimes will depend on whether or not someone tries to get him. Weems had a really good season and they can probably tender him and keep him.

Snelling: They really like him and you won’t turn the job over to Rodgers as a rookie in the even that Turner gets hurt they’re gonna want a veteran that knows the system.

Doesn’t Grimes have a 1st round tender put on him? I really don’t think a team would give up a number one for him..he’s good, but he isn’t in a first round pick class. Not saying Rodgers would fill in for Turner..maybe there is a running back who was cut by another team to fill that back up role. Rodgers is a third down back. Good luck to Jenkins and J.Anderson. We could say two first round picks down the drain but that was 4 or 5 years ago. the first round draft is good when you can get that one franchise QB, LIKE RYAN.. The falcons are deep at wide reciever with weems, douglas, and the new kid meier at the slot. These guys are smaller and have more speed than jenkins. J. A was moved inside to d. tackle. I believe Ray Edwards is what J. A. should have become. Ray Edwards can put pressure on the QB, especially get to the QB. I believe right now Ray Edwards is on top of his game. He can also help smother the run. WE need to get him because the eagles, titans and other teams are wanting his services.

DawgRed24

UGA1999- Let’s just say you are right in the 2 big signings. Can you shed some light on how we fit those 2 and Grimes under the cap. Restructuring? More cuts? Combination of both? And no, I don’t believe we would make a splash like getting Julio, only to sit on our hands during free agency, but you have to admit, your story comes across a little far-fetched.

DawgsnFalcons

July 29th, 2011
12:26 pm

falconfever74: Not saying Rodgers won’t get the rock but he’s not a feature back. Running the ball between the tackles in College is not the same as in the NFL. Not saying he can’t do it but that’s what Turner is for and typically you will not see a team turn to a rookie to carry the ball for them exclusively. That’s why I say they will try to resign Snelling.

Gotta understand that Kerry Meier won’t do much this upcoming season..he had an acl tear last year and like Douglas he’ll come on very very slow. maybe 1 catch per game, if that. Douglas should be better from last year but they still need another tigh end in the mix…Tony is not what he was 5 years ago, that’s just being realistic.

DawgRed24

Dawg1999- Got it. If you are correct, you are my new favorite person. That makes sense to me. Would you say most signings are done way before the media hears from “sources”?

UGA 1999

July 29th, 2011
12:30 pm

Jerseyfalcon….Tony is not what he was 5 years ago…agreed. However he is still a dominate force and a threat to any defense that the falcons will face. By adding Julio teams are forced not to double Roddy or Tony. Even with a “Cover 2″ there is no way they will be able to cover everything that Ryan will have access to.

DawgsnFalcons

July 29th, 2011
12:31 pm

Meier will not make an impact this year if he even makes the team. I could see him perhaps on the practice squad if they feel he’s healing according to schedule and they like his chances of eventually contributing. Do not put your hopes in Meier. I believe they will go with Roddy and Julio obviously and they’re expecting Douglas to step up. There’s a slim chance they might get Jenkins back as a possesion receiver for less money unless someone picks him up first.

I’m a happy Falcons fan today. Anderson was dead weight since he put on a Falcons uniform. If the Falcons shock the world and pick up Asmogh we’re going to be tough to beat. Sorry about Jenkins. He was good, but his career is far from finished. He will catch on with someone else. Should be a great season.

That’s the best move since slice bread. These folks might know what they are doing now. Go Birds.

grimes would make a good safety.he had a good season , but he struggles against bigger recievers. he is athletic and has good speed. falcons need another CB ., Moss would be a pretty good addition. get him if possible, sidny rice wouldve been good also.but too much money.harry douglas might come around, who was the rookie that got hurt last year Meijer, he has potentail too, michael jenkins is a good reciever, show the man some respect. GO DAWGS ! AND GO CALHOUN falcons win only 8 or 9 this year. wild card at best but doubtful,

Say goodbye to the last wasted remnants and legacy of Rich McKay’s brilliant picking as a below mediocre GM.

Good riddance !!!!!!!

As an old school sports fan I love defense. The Pittsburgh Steelers won four super bowls with defense. Your defense starts up front and ends with your DBS.

I really like Jammal Anderson as a inside run stuffer he should have motivated himself to stay with the team. The Falcons are up and coming, could have been a part of something really big. As for Jenkins well again lack of motivation. In life you have to motivate yourself.

I was very happy to see the Falcons get some much needed help on defense with “Ray(BOOM,BOOM) Edwards he’s gonna take QBS to the upper room.
