 UPDATE, 5:18 P.M.

Falcons third round pick Akeem Dent from the University of Georgia and Douglass High agreed to terms on a four-year, according to his Atlanta-base agent Hadley Engelhard.

Here’s some info from draft day on Dent, who attended some of the offseason workouts at Buford High.

Falcons general manager Thomas Dimitroff said Dent will be expected to contribute on special teams and backup at all of the linebacker spots.

Dent played outside and inside linebacker at Georgia.

“He’s a tough, hard-nosed guy who fits our scheme as a (middle) linebacker, but he also has the versatility to play all three positions,” Dimitroff said. “He will be a core special teams player for us, which is very important.”

The Falcons were also impressed by Dent being one of Georgia’s captains and by him attaining his degree in Housing.

“He fits in line as far as what we believe in having the right locker room,” Dimitroff said. “He played in the SEC and that speaks for itself. He knows football. He’s passionate about football.”

Earlier, the Falcons signed three of their six 2011 draft picks and a kicker on Thursday.

Kicker Matt Bosher, offensive lineman Andrew Jackson and defensive end Cliff Matthews were all signed to four-year contracts. The club also signed kicker Jacob Harfman to a three-year contract.

Bosher (6-foot, 208 pounds) was a sixth round pick (192 overall) from Miami.  He handled both punting and placekicking duties while playing at Miami.

Jackson (6-5, 299) was taken in the seventh round (210 overall) from Fresno State. He was a highly coveted tackle after his junior season, but he dropped in the draft after an injury-plague senior season.

Matthews (6-4, 268) was picked in the seventh round (230th overall) from South Carolina.  He recorded 144 total tackles, including 16.0 sacks and 17.5 tackles for loss over four seasons for the Gamecocks.

Harfman (5-10, 195)  played for Southern California over the last two college seasons. He punted 92 times for 3,719 yards and a 40.4 yard average while with the Trojans.

With the Falcons stocking up on punters, it looks they are preparing for Michael Koenen, who is a free agent, to sign with another team.

Andrew Jackson was considered a top flight prospect before suffering an ankle injury.

Any news on Edwards or if we’re interested in/talking to less popular DE’s like Mark Anderson, or an older guy like Shaun Ellis, anything? Also I heard with Mathias Kiwanuka resigning, Osi might be becoming avaiable, any truth to that?

I’m getting impatient. Falcons were supposed to hit the ground running in free agency. So far, no DE signed and no OL re-signed. Meanwhile our options are dwindling. Tick, tock.

i hear ya honest_abe, but all im saying is if the $’s already spent, which it is in jenk, i’d rather have it invested in a position of need, well at least in a position of need after this year, which TE will be, but i don’t envision wr being. Douglas would be the slot in that & Mier would be the # 4 option. We still have a ton of weapons, but i hear u completely, we need to re-up our O-line & get a DE, a believe a vet nick-back as well, but if the offers out there, well at least the need & we can fill it, getting back something that fills a need for us going forward, why not do it?

This is all noise while DEs are falling off the the baord. The ransom for Julio Jones is only justified if we sign a productive DE so as each moment passes, the less and less favorable the Jones pick looks.

Do something!!! I can’t believe the number of free agents that are being signed in the NFL and I don’t understand what Atlanta is doing. They lost the game to GB because of no pressure and the inability to get to the qb. They were close on many occassions but close only counts in horseshoes!

So no big pickups expected for the Dirty Birds.

I think that the Falcons should go after Ray Edwards as a second option since they decided to back off of Charles Johnson. They didn’t go after Peppers last year, and they can’t afford to let the good and experienced DE’s go to other teams. I think they should also look into getting Carlos Rodgers the cornerback from Washington or Jonathan Joseph from the Bengals. The Falcons must also keep their Oline together to have the same success that they have had recently.
