Mike Peterson (53) chases down a play. (Phil Skinner / pskinner@ajc.com)
Falcons linebacker Mike Peterson, in his quest for a Super Bowl ring, agreed to terms with the team on Thursday.
“Time to take care unfinished business ..just agreed to terms w/ FALCONS…let’s get it!!!,” Peterson wrote in a tweet.
We talked to Peterson during the lockout at one of the player-led practices at Buford High.
The new practice rules should help more veterans like Peterson, who turned 35 this summer, stay in the league. This will be the 13th season in the league for the former Florida Gator.
Last season, he started at weakside linebacker and helped the Falcons’ run defense rank 10th in the league (105.9 yards per game.) Peterson made 79 tackles, had one sack, two interceptions, one forced fumble, two fumble recoveries and five passes defense.
During the season, he said coming to the Falcons and the way they practice might have added two years on to his career. Coach Mike Smith gives the over 30 club practices off and carefully records their practice reps.
Here’s the chat with Peterson from Lockout Land. CLICK HERE.

is lawrence sidbury about to bust out this year? because i just don’t see how we’re going to get any pressure on the qb.
bvg’s bend don’t break scheme is ok for the regular season when the offense can play keep away. but the falcons run game is in decline and so this defense has a great chance to be the worst in the league.

Peterson is a good mentor to the young LBs and Akeem Dent will benefit from Mike being in the mix. As a player Peterson is a human missile who will give up his body for a big stop. Attitude, physicality and desire are some of Mike’s best traits.

MLH — That is a possibility. We have to let the dust settle first.
Larry –That’s why he plays in the base and not the nickel. He can still hit folks in the run game. TD loves his energy and swagger.

Jimmy Crack — Maybe he’ll go to Cleveland and be the change of pace guy behind Peyton Hillis. He can fish in Lake Erie.

DOL, is it possible that the Falcons are more actively pursuing the trade route rather than FA to answer their defensive questions? Or are we going to see a flurry here in the 24 hours starting here with the cutting of Norwood and resigning of Peterson this morning?

I feel bad for Norwood.. I finished my two degrees from Miss State Univ. and Norwood was our hero and we loved him as a person.. Good Luck man and try too stay healthy. Too be honest guys, I do not think he will be productive in this league and he probably will retire early in his career.

I see that the Falcons are standing pat with that pathetic defense. Why is it that every year the Jets and the New Englands and many other teams are actually trying to improve their teams and the Falcons are content to play with the same old pathetic bunch of defenseive players. I predict that this year it will catch up with them and we will be lucky to even make the playoffs. The Packers exposed the Falcons for what they were. Over rated and getting no better.

TDawg, how do you see that after only 2-3 days of free agency? Last year the Falcons stayed pack when they broke the bank for Dunta? Not many free agents have signed their contracts yet. And most teams haven’t even released their cap casualties yet. Everything will work out.

I can’t believe they are signing this old guy. Do the Falcons know what they are doing? We heard all this stuff about Ray Edwards, and they haven’t done anything but resign these sorry players who didn’t do anything against Green Bay. What about another cornerback? What about another receiver? What about a younger, faster linebacker. What about another pass rusher on the outside. What about another quarterback to compete, hopefully it will make Matt think before throwing those costly interceptions. Do we want to win, or go home again!!!! You are not going to win anything with those two cornerbacks, and no pass rush. Are the Smith running this organization again? Cmon guys, look at what the Packers did to our sorry defense? Also, please go after another receiver. Roddy needs some help, and a rookie will not do it. We need another veteran on the other side. Mr. Blanks, u are better than this!!!

D-Led, I refuse to believe that Falcons can “stand pat” on there non-existant pass rush against the great passing teams like Green Bay and New Orleans. After the Packer beat-down at home, the pass rush needs a serious upgrade – Dimitroff has to know this, right?

Putting pressure on the QB and wrapping him up when we get there was the key failing against Green Bay in our playoff loss for our otherwise surprisingly effective defense last season. I was very worried about our defense coming out of pre-season last year and things turned out much better than all of us expected despite our shortcomings. That typed, Grimes, despite his athleticism and pro bowl, is not the answer as a starting CB but is a perfect nickel guy. We can get by with him if we can consistently get pressure on the QB. Since the best DE re-upped with Carolina, I say either sign DEs Ray Edwards (26 yrs old and a rush specialist) or Matt Roth (28 yrs old and a rush specialist) or make a bold move and sign the best CB in the league Nnamdi as he can be had from Oakland.

S.O.S. from the Falcons. Same Ole “Mess”. Geez. I should have known we Blank, Smith and Dimitroff was feeding us a bunch of B.S. with their speeches after we got destroyed by the Packers! They have yet to address our biggest problems…UPGRADING OUR DEFENSE!.
How the heck can New England and possibly New York Jets improve their defense considerably and the Falcons seem content to go with the same crap! I’m totally disgusted.
I can careless about who they tried to sign (Johnson from the Panthers) than I am about who they actually signed. Peterson and Nicholas sure do SCARE opposing offenses! Did a lot of good against Green Bay.

I actually meant, I care more about who we actually SIGN than who we “went after”. Far too often, its reported here and elsewhere about who the Falcons “pursued”, but for whatever the reason, didn’t sign. To me, its just P.R. by the Falcons to show us (the fans) they are active, blah, blah, blah. As far as I’m concern, its about the results of those efforts, more so than the effort itself. Bottom line…What did you do to improve? So far, I’ve seen ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to the contrary.
Is it an IMPROVEMENT to the team so far that we re-sign Peterson? No. Is it an improvement that the Patriots sign (or about to sign Hanesworth?). Yes. That’s my point.

I think the Falcons front office is playing it right. They are waiting for the market to be set before they jump in and over pay for a player they covet; I’m thinking about a certain player signing with the Kitty Cats. Thomas Dimitroff has been the best GM at getting inexpensive players that come in and produce without going too far out on a limb. We can argue the merits of Dunta all you want but the fact is that teams targeted Grimes a lot more than Robinson which mean Dunta was doing his job. Plus what the Falcons are paying him looks like a bargain compared to what some of these other cornwers are going to be getting this season.
Let’s lock up Grimes and do our best to get either Cullen Jenkins or Ray Edwards but not have they make it impossible for us to get Clabo, Blalock and/or Dahl back.

The Falcons will be a better team if they get a running back with speed to spell Turner. Oh yeah, they stole Jacquizz Rogers in the draft (considered by many to be the third best back in the draft–and ahead of Mark Ingram).
The Falcons will be a better team if they get a top quality wide receiver to take the heat off Roddy. Oh yeah, they got 6′4″ Julio Jones who has run a 4.2 forty.
They were NFC champs last year. They got blasted by the Packers, but I recall they beat them during the season. Get over the Packers–that was one game.
Give Thomasso and Smitty a chance to assemble this team before they’ve even met on the field this season. They’ve shown they know what they’re doing by their record over the past three years. So, take a deep breath and enjoy the ride.

Careful, old qb…
You are making too much sense for this bunch.
For all of those complaining about the defense, get over it. In today’s NFL, the passing game is Numero Uno. The defense is constantly being hamstrung by new rules changes. And Julio should be a stud opposite Roddy White. You can’t win if you can’t score, and Dimitroff has put two big scoring threats into this already pretty good offense.

I see great things coming this year from our Mizzou players. Ray Edwards will hopefully be signed and he will provide just the right amount of push along with Abe and Kroy rotation to keep this defense competitive. Dunta may be tested more this year with Grimey getting more respect. Expect his ints to at least double. =)

Ok, I’m only going to say this once so listen up. “Brent Grimes isn’t going to get any taller”. It took me two years of listening to my neigbor bitch that he wasn’t tall enough. He’s now a Grimes fan. One of the greatest DB’s that ever played the game was Darrel Green for the Redskins. He was 5′9″ and weighed 184. He played for twenty years and hold tons of records. Grimes has the athleticism to make seemingly impossible interceptions. And dare I say it (oh yes, do, do), he hits ball carriers a hell of a lot harder than Deon Sanders ever did. Grimes is the total package, just packaged a bit more compact.

Ramble on, the passing game is king, which is why the Falcons need desperately to do something at defensive end or outside linebacker to ensure that they can reach the QB without having to rush Thomas Decoud.
Biermann made ONE great play last year. That’s not cutting it. Nicholas is a decent player but that’s it.
Neither one of these signings makes a bit of difference to improve what they couldn’t do last year which is get to the QB.

ha you guys are too funny! someone just compared darrell green to brent grimes. darrell green is arguably the best corner to ever strap em up. brent grimes is a nickel back that played very well last year and will get overpaid this year.
look super bowls are won with both offense and defense. but the key is to have dominant big men in the trenches! the falcons undersized offensive line was slightly better than average last year but is in danger of possibly losing 3/5 of that line. the undersized defensive line is mediocre to say the least (except abe) who is on the downside of his career.
TD gets all this praise of being a genius. i’ve yet to see any of his brilliance. the falcons played one of the easiest schedules last year. they played the nfc west. nuff said. they got blown out at home to a wildcard team. those of you that think this franchise has become some sort of dynasty. wake the hell up! we need A LOT of parts! the rb has alot of wear and tear and showed signs of slowing down last year. the TE is hundred years old. the middle linebacker has two busted knees. this team is a lot close to the lottery than they are to a super bowl. oh well at least cleveland gets our #1 next year. yay!

We need to sign Bob Sanders. At least for one year or two. There needs to be someone on defense besides Abe that the offense respects. Osi would be a good fit also. I don’t think that Ray Edwards any better than Kroy, so please don’t overpay him. Remember, he was average on a GREAT D Line that left him free while everyone else was double teamed. None of our DT will be double team. No worries though, there will be DE left after everyone trims down their roster for the salary cap, which brings the question, How in the world is the Redskins not over the cap with the amount of money Daniel Snyder pays his players?

chc4, you of the few have a clue. Of Sidbury or Beerman, one will have a breakout season. There is no need to run out and overspend on a DE. When birds are hatched they have to develop their wings to fly. Let the young birds come into their own. This is the season for that. These two players played college at not well-kown football programs. We saw a taste of the Beerman last year. Now that he probably won’t be playing SP teams he has more of a chance to “Rise Up” to the call. Plus he has that crazy woman on his side now and only two things can happen. She can weigh him down to where he can’t concentrate or he will take out his frustrations on opposing offenses rather than at home. Either way you got Sidbury waiting to go Ape$#!t when given the opportunity.
Stop basing the complete season on aquiring a DEFENSIVE END! DAMM!

IT appears TD is on top of his game after all…that doesn’t surprise me…absent TED…when has another HIGH PROFILE guy been so committed to ATL…well we can throw in Author Blanks of course…the architecture of this renaissance… I BELIEVE…Author Blanks is going bring a ring to this city.
I agree with Joey…Good News about Peterson and Norwood…MM meaning our offensive coordinator of course …just has to call the same plays for Rogers…that he USE TO call for Norwood…and watch this offense explode…we gotta another Home Run hitter…when teams stack the box…WE need to make they asssssssssss pay.
THAT’S WHATZUP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Good news on Peterson…It’s to bad Grimes has put us out of his price target…dude deserves to get paid.
But in the NFC South…with Drew Breese…an I hate to say them Saint’s…especially with Marques Colston…what he like…6’7” or sumin…anyway…against Grimes it feels like he is like 6’7”…Breese will eat us alive…for the record…they will always be the Aint’s too me.
Grimes will always be a nickel…in the NFC South.
Breese will take advantage OF GRIMES on big plays…we seen it last year.
For the right price…GRIMES is a starter…for MAX DOLLAR.
GRIMES is a nickel…I don’t see TD shelling out max dollar for a nickel.
Brent Grimes, dude…work with us Daaaaaaaaaaaaaawg.lol

Peterson must be a back up and not a starter. Coaching our draft picks will be all he needs to do.
