5 things we heard: Ray Edwards headed to Philadelphia

Minnesota Vikings defensive end Ray Edwards would be a nice fit for the Falcons. (Associated Press)

Minnesota Vikings defensive end Ray Edwards could be headed to Philadelphia. (Associated Press)

With most of the NFL writers in town last week, we passed some time during the eight-hour league’ meeting cross-checking free agency notes, catching up on league gossip, rumor and innuendo.

Here are five things we heard bouncing of the walls of the swank Atlanta Airport Marriott Gateway:

  1. Ray Edwards is headed elsewhere: The Falcons reportedly have had a change of heart. They are going to focus on retaining their 11 free agents and will not be a player in the Ray Edwards derby. The defensive end is expected to land in Philadelphia.
  2.  Tyson Clabo is staying put: Although the Falcons planned for a potential exodus of offensive linemen, they appear ready to retain two of the three starters. The order of priority is believed to be Clabo, Harvey Dahl and then Justin Blalock.
  3. Stephen Nicholas is headed to the New York Giants:  Nicholas is viewed as a potential starter for the Giants. For the Falcons, he opened last season as a reserve. He has started 24 of the last 32 regular-season games with the Falcons.
  4. If no Edwards, what are the Falcons going to do at defensive end? I didn’t get a plausible answer for this. Kroy Biermann thinks he can make another leap if he doesn’t have to play on special teams.
  5. Charles Johnson likely headed back to Carolina:  Johnson, the former UGA standout, could be another defensive end target, but Carolina general manager Marty Hurney said it was rather easy to figure out their priorities. Translation: They plan to re-sign Johnson and running back DeAngelo Williams.

DOL, who are the Falcons looking to bring in defensively? I agree with resigning Clabo and Dahl; they are the fuel to the run game.

I really think the Falcons make a run at Nnamdi Asomugha considering both defensive ends are porbably going else were. They will sign Nnamdi for around $9 million a year and move Grimes to nickel.

see all ex falcon line backers land in the nfc east and, that would be the second to land on the NY Giants roster. Love Steven but lets consider that he was drafted to play middle and now four years later he was projects to fight with Mike Peterson for the starting strong side linebacker spot

The 3 stooges are now scratching their heads wondering why they didn’t draft for their sorry D who was ranked 22nd against the pass. With Brees , Freeman and Newton, it’s gonna be a free for all against the Falcants this year in the NFC South!

I would love to see an end come in here, but I’m not sure one end is a fix. Our D is still a young unit and developing. TD may have something up his sleeve, but as I recall a 13-3 record was not too shabby. So, SeenThisB4, don’t be surprised when the Aints are not the NFC South Champs, again, looking up at the Falcons.

To be an AINTS fan you have to do a whole lot of pretending, ignoring, postering, and be deep, deep in denial. How else can them commenting about our pass DEF when their entire secondary couldn’t garner more INT’s than Probowl CB BGrimes? How else can anyone them ignoring the AINTS poor pass rush, when their front 4 garnered only 2 more sacks than Falcons Probowl DE JAbraham?

And please, please, let’s not mention the AINTS sorry, pitiful run DEF. In the playoffs, the Seattle Seahawks, the worst playoff team in NFL history, with the NFL’s 25th ranked OFF, ripped that SORRIER THAN SORRY DEF apart. With $18M under the cap, and the ability to drop even lower, the Falcons can sign just about anyone we want. CAN THE AINTS SAY THAT?

We have a Probowl DE, CAN THE PITIFUL AINTS DEF SAY THEY HAVE A PROBOWL DE? You’re desperate for DE help. We have a Probowl caliber CB’s, CAN THE PITIFUL AINTS DEF SAY IT HAS A PROBOWL CALIBER CB? What do you AINT loving fanatics have to say about FS? I challenge any of you AINT FANATICS to answer intelligently and honestly any of the following questions.
1-What are you going to do about FS, bring back old ANCIENT AGE Darren Sharper?
2-What are you going to do about that sorry DL, the one that gave up so many rushing yds and couldn’t generate a decent pass rush?
3-What are you going to do about your secondary, which made fewer plays and garnered fewer INT’s than Falcon’s CB BGrimes?
4-When are you going to quit whinning and crying about the injuries you suffered? The Packers suffered as many, if not more, injuries than any other team and they won the Superbowl.

The only team your BELOVED AINTS will finish ahead of in the NFC South Division is the Carolina Panthers. You’d better hope your BELOVED AINTS will make the playoffs again as a wildcard team, because that’s the only way you’ll get there. And if you do make the playoffs, let’s hope your BELOVED AINTS won’t have to suffer another monumental embarrassment at the hands of another team to make the playoffs with a losing record.

It would be so nice to splash the league twice in 3 months, first with drafting Julio and now by grabbing Asomugha and adding in a quality OLB in Manny Lawson of the 49ers. Manny is not a elite pass rusher, but is a fundamentally sound veteran who is also one of those 4-3 linebackers stuck in a 3-4 scheme.

Man, that deal with clabo better not be something huge. Honestly, I would’ve let clabo and blalock walk, kept dahl, and let the young guys play and develop since they have more upside. But I also don’t feel any type of way about not going after ray edwards. I never believed in the guy anyway. I always thought he got allen and the williams brothers leftover plays. IF anything going after charles johnson should be the move if DE is what they’re looking for. FA is going to be crazy though.

No way the Falcons sign Asomugha. First they are going to have to pay pro bowler Grimes as he is a FA. Once they do that there is zero chance they will pay another CB 9+ million. You cannot commit that much $ to three CB’s, it would be around 20-25% of their salary cap. However they do need to get a savvy veteran who can groom the young secondary and play some good nickle. I think the Dline will be better this year simply because they are healthier and more experienced. Their interior lineman should be nasty, look for the pass rush up the middle to be exceptional. Agree with The Bierman that he does not need to be on ST. So a better interior pass rush + a veteran DB in the nickle slot should help the pass defense overall. Take away the greenbay game and the defense was overall better than average with all those young guys being key contributors.

ok, slim and ken…here goes
1) Sharper will not be the starting FS. He started last year on the injured list and contributed quite well. i think Jenkins will do a great job this year
2) at least the Saints addressed their DL…unlike the falcants…cam jordan will add some depth in case of injury..
3) Harper and Porter will do just fine..along with 2010 number 1 pick Robinson..this years pick of johnny patrick may be this years steal in the draft…
4) with no major injuries last year, the falcants still didnt make it to the SB…

and what about the Saints number two pick?…Ingram will provide a potent running option to go along with the other RBs and of course, the passing game….

Glad to hear the Falcons won’t waste money on Edwards. He’s been at best an 8 sack guy in a contract year on a very talented defensive line that got to play the Lions twice a year. I don’t consider him enough of an upgrade to throw money at him like some of the more desperate teams will do. If Carolina doesn’t franchise Johnson, they should take a shot and the younger guy with more upside.

Just saying, your logic is flawed. No reason that Roddy “the best WR last year in football” can not duplicate or exceed the #’s he put up last year. He was double teamed all year, especially the second half. The offense will be throwing more this season and Jones should help the doubles and free up the underneath stuff whic Roddy excels at. Plus he should be able to break plays for longer gains as well because of equal coverage in the secondary. Jones will take catches away from jenkins not Roddy, 30+ and maybe a little from TG. Add the extra throwing this year and Roddy will be just fine. He is not primadona WR in regards to his touches, he juts wants to win. Of course you being an Aint’s fan you would not know this. But by all means keep wasting you life trolling Falcons blogs, hopefully you learn a thing or two.

I will not believe it until I see it. I would be shocked if the Falcons didn’t attempt to get some help at DE. I don’t believe that Edwards is headed to Philly. So he takes a visit, that is not a done deal. Nobody can talk yet so how is it he is headed to Philly? Maybe his agent said that is one place he is interested in, but again, that is not a done deal.

I’ve heard that Johnson said he wanted to stay in Carolina, I just can’t figure out why. Kiwanuka may be a cheaper option that can give you something in the rotation if you don’t land Edwards or Johnson. I know about the injuries but I’ve got to have someone else at DE that can provide a pass rush. I just think we will be sorry if we go with what is on the roster.

How does Julio replacing Jenkins take catches away from White?? Are you daft? How about he takes catches away from the guy he replaces, makes incredibly more sense doesn’t it. Julio’s presence on the field will spread out defenses and pull double-teams off Roddy. If anything, Roddy will be more productive.

Roddy 110 catches for 1,400 yards and 18 td’s
Gonzo 40 catches for 400 yards and 7 td’s
HD 30 catches for 500 yards and 3 td’s
Julio 55 catches for 850 yards and 7 td’s

Some heads in the front office will start to roll next year because we won’t make the playoffs with oure current Defense. And TD will look like the GM I’ve always considered him to be…way in over his head. Again, he doesn’t know what he’s doing and this years draft confirmed it.

One last thing- Kroy is nothing better than a back-up DE. He didn’t cut the mustard last year and won’t this year. We not only need help on the DE but also in the middle of field.

Again, this goes back to TD. Look folks- we’ve been in this position since the release of Malloy/Brookings and still have not found a replacemen like TD promised. Don’t you remember Dimitroff comments about putting defensive play-makers on the field after the playoff lose to Arizona.
Either TD is stupid or he can’t evaluate talent. It just that simple.

So, if we by-pass on Defensive help, then that means that we put all of eggs in Julio’s basket…when we really didn’t need another WR.

I love all these people who are blasting the Falcons front office. This is the group that finally put back-to-back winning product on the field, and not just that, but they’ve given us three winning seasons and just last year we were one of the best teams in the NFC. I don’t know of anyone who could be Green Bay at the end of last season. Yes, there is still some work to do, but it is darn foolish to say that Dimitroff cannot assess talent, or worse yet, to call him stupid. Just three years ago this organization was a joke. Since then, like every other team in the league, we’ve had good draft picks and bad draft picks. We’ve had good free agent signings and bad free agent signings. Look at teh core of talent this team has and you can see a perennial contender for years to come.

Not surprised about Edwards. The boxing and press releases may well have created a Falcons Filter veto. Thx for the intel, Dled.

If I understand correctly, the cap is about $10 mill or so below the last capped year, so some fiscal decisions will need to be made all around the league. The Falcons may not do a big splurge, deciding instead to retain Grimes, the OL (or most of it), and Snelling if he isn’t too pricey. Next year, I think Abe’s contract is up so the may wait a year on DE, and stick with what made them 13-3 last year (with Sidbury perhaps in a fish or cut bait year).

Trade is also a possibility, Jenkins for Mario anyone??? (yeah I know, that blows past wishful thinking into hallucinogenic mushrooms territory.

Free agent wise, I want an experienced, solid Nickle back and an experienced, solid LB for the D.

Great news the Falcons problem was not DE. Resigning Clabo is great news. I think they can manage without singing Dahl. We have debt at his position. I would like to see the Falcon.s make a few trades to insure success for next years draft. Great job so far T. D.

While I appreciate “just sayin” not cowardly posting and failing to respond to other falcon fans, I think the 70yd int TD did not surpass the 65yd Tecmo bowl TD run. To the Aint’s fans, the success of your team has been staked on rookies and retaining free agents in a period where other teams have as much as 60 million that they HAVE to spend on free agents. I understand team loyalty but are you really excited about that? At least the Falcon fans are honest about the state of the team.

D Led,
I think I’ll make my final decision once the free agent frenzy begins…this is gonna be one of the wildest pools ever. There is gonna be a lot of wheeling and deealing done. If I were an Aints fan I would stay away from talk about last year’s playoffs altogether. If I were an Aints fan, I also would use our ONE Superbowl in the history of our franchise as bragging rights against Falcons’ fans…nevermind the fact that any team can luck up & win ONE Superbowl. Don’t believe me? Just ask the Bucs, Colts, Ravens, & Rams. SUCCESSFULLY DEFEND a championship…then talk. Actually be the REIGNING champs…then possibly have something to say.

swatguy: I’d like to believe that about Bierman, I’m just not convinced. ST or no ST, he’s had his chance to prove he can be a starting DE in this league. While he’s proven to be a solid rotational player at the position, I’m just not comfortable going into the season hanging my hat on a player that racked up a whopping 3 sacks as a starter the previous season.

Well D-Led, I guess you didn’t like my questions about this article so your not going to post it. I’m assuming instead of posting something that has merit for others to respond to, you censure my post and simply post “FalcFans.com » Falcons to pass on signing Edwards” as your response to me.

To me, that’s bad journalism.

So we trade 5 freaking draft picks for a WR with the thoughts that we would acquire Defensive help via FA and now TD is going to stand pat. We are toast. Packers, Bucs, Eagles ALL getting better, we are not getting better. With an aging Abe and ZERO help on the other side, this year the Falcons take a step back…probably for the next couple of years. Until Blank and Dimitroff get it through their heads that DEFENSE wins Championships we will always be a post season disappointment.

I wonder what prompted the Falcons to back off signing DE REdwards. Apparently KBiermann has convinced management that playing on special teams definitely affected his overall ability to get to the QB. With the likelihood of OLB SNicholas joining the Giants, it looks like we’ll be going after a FA OLB. I strongly believe that our pass rushing problems rests at the feet of DC VanGorder.

There are teams, like the Eagles, that don’t get a strong pass rush from their DL. But they use creative coverages and blitz packages to get the job done. VanGorder has to stop putting all of the burden for rushing the passer on our DL. If he trusted our secondary more, and blized our LB’s more, he wouldn’t have to complain about our LB’s pass coverage skills.

Our secondary is simply too quick, fast and athletic to be playing so much doggone zone DEF. CB’s BGrimes and DRobinson aren’t what one would call shutdown CB’s, but they’re definitely solid cover CB’s that can be trusted to stick with their man and make plays. And we actually have safeties the can cover and be very physical as well.

With DT PJerry returning healthy, and if he stays that way, our pass rush, especially our interior pass rush, will improve tremendously. In certain passing situations, I’d like to see us use LSidbury and Biermann at DE, and let JAbraham rush from different positions, which is what we did with him when he got 16.5 sacks.

There are numerous things VanGoder can do to improve our pass rush without adding to our DL.

I’m dissapointed to hear about ray edwards, but some of the stuff I read had me wondering if he would really be that good of a fit anyways. However, I want to see some moves to help the D in this short free agency. If not ray then who? I understand the D is young so a years experience should help them improve, but will it help out that much? The falcons are really close to a superbowl, and they made one big move for julio jones, make one big move or a couple smaller moves to help the D and who knows.

Everyone just needs to calm down, the Falcons will be adding pieces to their Defense in Free Agency. They’re just looking to save money. Ray Edwards had 8 sacks, I repeat, 8 sacks. Didnt Biermann have that many 2 yrs ago? What if he gets a big contract then becomes a 3 sack guy like Kroy? Once teams start cutting players Thursday, the FA pool will be even deeper. We will be able to get productive proven vets at a more reasonable price, on shorter contracts. Maybe not superstars, but good enough to help get the job done.

We need a good DE. For anyone NOT seeing that then you didnt pay attention to the season. We were once again near the bottom in terms of defending against the pass. Kroy is NOT going to cut it. Failure to get a good DE this off-season will be viewed as a failure.

What happens if the elder Abe (who represents all the rush we have) gets hurt? Then what do we have? NOTHING. Not to mention that if you go with Kroy AGAIN this year, and AGAIN he cant take the next step, what happens next off-season when you have to replace him AND Abe (when he retires – which is speculated this may be his last season)? We do not have a 1st rounder next year. Where are we going to get all those DE we will need.

No….a good DE is a must.

I believe some one just keeps imagining what they would like to see happen and then passes it along as fact (what they claim to hear). We need another CB more than DE. Just look at the losses from last season and the top teams in the NFC. They are loaded at WR.

D-Led – No offense man but if the Falcons aren’t taking a DE, aren’t interested in Nnamdi and the OL is staying put, what are they going to do? I don’t see them sitting out free agency the needs on the defensive side of the ball are just too great. I mean considering the past free-agent victories (Tony G and Mike Turner) I think their planning something big, something that may even surprise you.
