Matt Ryan 8th on SI’s list of highest paid American athletes

MATT Ryan at Pro Bowl

BIRDLAND – Back in May of 2008, Matt Ryan signed a six-year, $72 million contract that included $34.75 million in guarantees with the Falcons.

Because Ryan’s set to receive a major bonus when the lockout is settled, he’s No. 8 on Sports Illustrated list of the top 50 highest-earning American athletes.

The bulk of guaranteed money in Ryan’s six-year, $72 million contract he signed in 2008 should be paid out this year, when he’ll earn a $22 million roster bonus on top of his $10.25 million salary.

The magazine projects that Ryan also will make  $450,000 in endorsements which would bring his total salary to $32.7 million for 2011.

Golfer Tiger Woods ($62.9 million) is at the top of the list followed by golfer Phil Mickelson ($61.1), NBA star LeBron James ($44.5), Indianapolis quarterback Peyton Manning ($38.07), New York Yankees star Alex Rodriquez ($36), Los Angeles Lakers star Kobe Bryant ($34.8) and Boston Celtics star Kevin Garnett ($32.8).

Ryan has led the Falcons to 33 wins which is tied in NFL history with Hall of Fame quarterback Dan Marino for most wins in his first three seasons in the NFL. He is an impressive 20-2 at the Georgia Dome during the regular season.

Hopefully he’ll get to play 16 games this year, take the Falcons through the playoffs and all the way to the Super Bowl.

…..a reliable pass rush would really help.

Ryan is decent, but he is a step below guys like Aaron Rodgers, Sam Bradford, Matt Stafford..He really hasn’t shown up in the playoffs yet and doesn’t seem to be able to get the ball downfield..Right now were a dink and dunk offense..overrated is the word I would use but hopefully he’ll prove me wrong..

lanier – first of all, he DOESN’T make Manning money – Manning makes 16%more. Secondly, it’s not “Incrediable”, it’s “Incredible”. Duh.

I paid $32.67 for a XBOX 360 and my mom got a 17 inch Toshiba laptop for $94.83 being delivered to our house tomorrow by FedEX. I will never again pay expensive retail prices at stores. I even sold a 46 inch HDTV to my boss for $650 and it only cost me $52.78 to get. Here is the website we using to get all this stuff, http://GoGetBids.com

GB — You are pretty tough. Only a few quarterbacks have taken their teams to the playoffs as rookies. As you may know, I covered Favre in Green Bay. Matt’s way ahead of schedule to just be in year three, going into year four.

Many fans outside of Atlanta are starting to see the real Matt Ryan (see ESPN article) . He CAN NOT carry this team like the top tier QBs. He lost at home in the playoffs. Matt Ryan is 0-2 in the playoffs. Yet he’s one of the top 10 highest paid athletes in…for what? Is he suppose to be Atlanta’s savior?

Well, as John Clayton (ESPN) pointed out, Matt Ryan is going to have to learn how to stretch the field or the deal for Julio Jones could turn out to be the dumbest pick in a long time.”The Falcons’ coaching staff asked Ryan to throw only 38 passes longer than 21 yards. He completed only nine.” Ouch! Folks, we all know Matt Ryan CAN NOT stretch the field with accuracy.

Ryan was a good pick. With the addition of Julio Jones, he
should be able to take it to the next level.

Good money so far. Excellent money, now he’s just got to bring some playoff success to justify this portion of the contract. This is a good time to buy his stock actually because of the recent playoff failure.

Seriously though, they have harped on the process. This team is being built gradually and last year they had some terrific wins and comebacks to put themselves into the position of being the number one seed before a rather epic failure. The bones of that team are getting better. It’s not a flash in the pan like all the old Falcons teams. We aren’t pitting all future hopes on the fragile knees of a guy that got the most carries in league history.

Ryan simply does not have the athletic ability or arm strength of some of our past signal callers, but overall he’s been pretty solid.

Mistakes and failures can lead to opportunity. As a team I cannot remember a time in my relatively short life that they have had a more complete overall team than this that is really competing to win every game.

We are in great hands with Ryan. We are going to have to out score the other teams again this year. BVG did a great job (minus the GB game)with the talent he had to work with. They just need to get this CBA done and let’s get started. Great job Mr. Ledbetter.

The Packers game was the best test of Ryan thus far and what happened?

PMC

The Falcons are pulling out most of the games they should win under Ryan and they are also winning games at times when they don’t have better talent or they shouldn’t win. They aren’t generally losing games they should win. There haven’t been many of those Green Bay style losses to terrible teams and that used to be the norm.

Dear Matt Ryan,

I wanted to let you know about a position that has opened up. It is underneath Arthur Blank’s bus. It has been open for awhile. You are very talented, but so are athletes like LeBron James and, closer to home, Andruw Jones. Great players make big plays to win Championships. Talented players/coaches who disappoint in the playoffs wind up under Blank’s bus.

hell for all that money i need him to stop looking his wr down, cause for that money we can get a qb that is not making high school mistakes, he needs to win playoff games, regular season is okay but great qb’s do what brees and rodgers done win in crunch time and right now matt is 0-2 in post season.

GB stands for GooberButt. You are now on total football restriction. You are not allowed to even watch a game until you grow a brain. Same goes for O.J. and lanier.

We just need to hang on to the OL and beef up the pass rush and we will be in great shape.

Good point but that wasn’t Matts fault. The offense did score 28 if I remember correctly. It was the defense that could not stop the fudge Packers.

Joe, he stared down Roddy White, on 4th down. Everyone in the freaking stadium knew who he was going to go to, He could have looked the other way and it still would have been a pick 6 on that route.

Jenkins is woefully unreliable and was responsible for the pick in the end zone. Tony Gonzalez can’t run anymore. The Falcons basically had ONE receiver, who would you throw to on 4th down?

Did anyone see the NFL network show last night about the “10 most snakebite franchise’s” of all time? The Falcons didn’t make the list. ARE YOU KIDDING ME? The Falcons are the number 1 most snake bitten Franchise.
Every time we are suppose to be great and possibly go to a super bowl, our QB gets injured.
Every time we get in a big playoff game we are suppose to win, we find a way to crumble under the pressure. (the Minnesota game and win at the frozen tundra does not count because we were suppose to lose those games)
I could go on and on about our bad luck
We have suffered enough through the years. It is our time now for years to come. Odds are in our favor for success.

Ryan is extremely overrated. He was a weak arm. His high salary is due to the organization trying to get rid of the stain that Mike Vick left on the team. They reached to far with Ryan. His numbers are not that good. Go to NFL.com and look at his stats.

I remember when Peyton Manning first got in the league: and he didn’t win a playoff game until like his 6th year. I remember him getting blown out in one playoff game to the Jets like 41-0. People seem to forget Manning’s early struggles in light of his recent successes.

Ryan is in good shape. Yes he hasn’t won a playoff game yet, but I really believe that will come. There are only like 6 QB’s I’d put ahead of Ryan right now: Manning, Brady, Brees, Rodgers, Big Ben, and Rivers. I think once Ryan proves he can carry the offense like these other guys, he’ll surpass some of them( especially Big Ben and Rivers). But that means that the Falcons will need to take the training wheels off him and allow him to make mistakes in order for him to get better. I’m of the opinion that if you can run a great 2 minute or 1 minute offense( which Ryan can), then you can have the offense filter thru you. The Falcons really aren’t far from being a Super Bowl contender. They probably overachieved a bit last season, but this is an organization that isn’t going anywhere. The Birds are a consistent playoff contender at worst.
