5 things we learned at minicamp practice

Falcons safety Thomas DeCoud soars high for a pass at Tuesday's minicamp practice. Can X-Men fly? (D. Orlando Ledbetter/DLedbetter@ajc.com)

BUFORD – Here are five things we learned at minicamp practice on Tuesday.

1. Free safety Thomas DeCoud is a fan of X-Men:  DeCoud, who was sporting a blue X-Men t-shirt, was working out at C.E.S. with Chip Smith. Also, a member of the Saints was working there. When the Saints player left, DeCoud knew it was time for the Falcons to start getting together, too.

2. Quarterback Matt Ryan is a married man: “It’s been great,” Ryan said. “It’s been a month now. The first month has been awesome. Everything you could hope for. We’ll just leave it at that.”

3. Ryan and backup QB John Parker Wilson have been drilling Julio Jones: While Jones wasn’t at the first practice, he has been meeting with the quarterbacks and wide receivers. Also,  Wilson said that Jones is a fast learner and will not have any problem picking up the offense.

Ryan is not sure how the Falcons plan to integrate Jones into the offense.

“It will be interesting to see,” Ryan said. “He’s a big physical guy. I think he can do a lot of things for us. I think he’ll play a big part. He’s really good at blocking in the run game. That’s important for our offense.

“I think he can bring some unique things. I’ll be interested to finally get to work with him and see the skills sets he has in terms of route running.  Once we kind of find out about that, I think we’ll know more about how we are going to use him.”

Julio, go deep!

4. Linebacker Mike Peterson is a good role model: Peterson is leading the drills and trying to make sure the Falcons stay out of trouble.

“A lot of the young guys will tell you, I’ve been checking up on them,” Peterson said. “I’m just trying to make sure that they are working out. We took down notes last year during the season. ‘Check on your notes. Stick you head in the playbook. Stay out of trouble. Keep your nose out of the news.’ As a veteran guy, sometimes I have to play that Daddy role or that Uncle Pete role. But I think the younger guys accept it and probably expect it.”

5. Wide receiver Michael Jenkins was not upset with the drafting of Julio Jones: Jenkins was not taking aback by the selection of Julio Jones in the NFL draft.

“It was a big move,” Jenkins said. “They obviously felt that he could come in and add to our offense. We are looking forward to seeing him out there making plays, the same way he did at Alabama. I know that everybody is excited to see him get out there.”

It’s nice to see the kind of players this organization has assembled. They are a TEAM of Professionals. Man it’s easy to route for this team.

Ryan is running the offense in this minicamp and hopefully will be given the same kind of freedom during the season. The coaches need to turn him loose. Last year’s Ravens game is indicative of what this man can do.

classy answer my jenks. wouldnt expect anything otherwise. and jenkins is still a valuable part of this team. he made some big catches on game winning drives last season and is a jump ball threat in the redzone

SeenThisB4: We saw the true Brees last year.. He makes poor decisions under pressure!! The only way you guys win the NFC South is if the Birds have significant injuries, or does nothing about the poor pass rush we had last year. Roddy and Julio burn you guys for multiple TD’s next year!!

Right now the Saints nor the Falcons are beating the Packers………so we need to focus on them 1st and hopefully free agency will help us close the gap and be the best team.

SCfalconfan: Maybe so, but your only as good as your last playoff whipping to the sixth seed.

Injuries? I guess you forget we were plagued with injuries this past season, especially at RB, which made Brees’ offensive more one dimensional and susceptible to the rush and THAT is why you fools got the division title from us. The las time we had a healthy running back corp, we ate your lunch on your home field. It’s YOUR team that won’t be able to maintain that injury-free status that you enjoyed all last year.

I will say one thing for your team, I like your Julio Jones pick. He’ll compliment White very well. Having two high caliber WRs will prove how average of a QB Ryan really is. Wait and see.

STB4 is out.

I think we will see Jenkins turn in to Finneran 2.0. I the respect that he is a big target. He may not have the hands that Finn had but I think we could see him as the passion receiver that we loose with Finn retirement.

The Saints did alright without Bush, he was out with a broken fibia most of last year. I think the Saints should try to keep him, but if he wants out, all he has to do is not do anything at all, cause the Saints will not pay him the $11 million he’s scheduled to get. Maybe the falcan’ts will want to pay him that much, but I doubt it.

Realistically, he’ll be offerred $2.75 million, and my guess is that is with incentives. Here’s the thing with him, the best chance he has of leaving some sort of mark on the NFL is amassing SB trophies, and he knows it. There’s only a few teams that can offer him that opportunity, and he’s currently the #2 RB on that team, behind Pierre Thomas, with Chris Ivory, Hamilton and now Ingram all on his heels. So if he leaves, he’ll be missed,…., by the sportswriters mostly, who like to write inane columns about his tweets.

hiramsaint

he does add a dynamic but not hardly 11 mil worth. imagine if you had paid a rookie 72 MIL and were 0-2 in the playoffs. i think we’ll be ok with or without due to our depth. that depth didn’t help last year though and i know of another team who will likely find out that things can and do change drastically from one year to the next.

DOL, I can’t thank you enough for the report today on the radio. More information than I have heard from anyone on the state of our Falcons. Thanks for everything.

Uncle Pete says “keep your nose out of the news”. Keep up the good work Mike!

Hiram, STB4, with the exception of being the fortunate beneficiary of a horrible Brett Favre pass, we all still remember your team’s fans as decades-long paper bag wearing boo birds. You do remember the paper bags from the old videos, don’t you?
