FLOWERY BRANCH — Falcons general manager Thomas Dimitroff pulled off a major shocker, trading up into the first round to select wide receiver Julio Jones.
The Falcons reportedly sent their first, second and fourth round picks along with next seasons’ first round pick to move up 21 spots.
Here is Jones’ bio:
Julio Jones, Alabama, 6-3, 221: He is from Foley, Ala. He set school records with 194 catches, 3,287 yards and 43 touchdowns at Foley High. He was rated the No. 1 receiver in the nation by rivals.com and scout.com. He signed with Alabama over Florida State, Florida, Oklahoma and Texas Tech. As a freshman, he led the Crimson Tide with 58 catches. He also had 924 yards receiving and four touchdowns. In his sophomore season, Jones battled through a string of juniors. He rebounded to help the Crimson Tide win the BCS national championship as he caught 43 passes for 596 yards and four touchdowns. Last season, he caught 78 passes for 1,133 yards and seven touchdowns. He was noted for his downfield blocking in the run game. Also, he did have some problems with the occasional dropped pass. Despite having a broken bone in his foot, he turned in a phenomenal workout at the scouting combine. He ran the 40-yard dash in 4.39 seconds, had a broad jump of 11 feet, 3 inches and a vertical jump of 38 1/2 inches.

1) It sounded like the ESPN announcers said the Falcons thought they had AJ Green but CIN reneged. If so, this UGA fan is eternally disappointed.
2) Did you see the ransom for Julio? 2 first round, a second round, and two fourth rounds. Wow. I think he is good, but that is Ricky Williams trade territory.

It’s pretty easy to see who the Doggie fans are on this blog. As you can tell from my username, I’m a Tech fan, but I do respect AJ Green’s ability. I don’t think the Falcons lost anything, however, in picking up Jones instead of Green. Jones played for Saban for three years – his toughness is proven. Green? Gotta wonder a bit about mental toughness – the kid knowingly broke an NCAA rule that may well have cost his team three wins. I wish them both well, and I think having Jones on one side, White on the other give them Falcons one hellacious pair of threats at WR.

1. The Falcons did not give up too much. There is a chart that says exactly what needs to be done to move to a certain spot.
2. Dimitroff obviously did not see any impact players at 27.
3. With this set of skill players on offense + another year of maturity for Peters, Jerry, Witherspoon, Moore and company, this is going to be a 12 win team next year, so the Falcons’ 1st rounder is going to be in the 27-30 range again next year.
4. Jones gives the Falcons the two best blocking WR’s in the NFL outside of Pittsburgh. Yes, he drops a few balls, but learning from Roddy White, who dropped A LOT of balls early on, will give him a heckuva start in the NFL.
5. AJ Green is a better WR, but Jones is not far behind at all.
I am not overwhelmed by the pick, but it is exciting.

If the Falcons are drafting in the 26 and up range this year and next, what difference does it make? They feel Jones will be an impact player. That is all that matters. If you are more interested in getting in bodies, then yes, Falcons did a bad deal. This team is close enough where they don’t need alot of rookie bodies. They are young enough. It’s about impact players and veterans to plug in holes now.

Man, this was entirely way too much to give up with our needs glaring on defense still. Jones does drop many easy passes but is a very good blocker with great speed. I think he has alot of talent and upside but this price tag just wasn’t worth it. There is no doubt teams will have to pay attention to jones but it won’t matter if he doesn’t show good hands. He makes great catches at times then drops the 5 yard outs wide open. I would have given this up only for 1 WR and that was aj green. I’m disappointed in what TD did here to say the least. Stupid decision. I hope we make a splash in free agency is all i have to say.

A high price to pay? Look at it this way. First of all this year’s #1 (Jones) is way better than what they would have gotten at #27, so that’s far from losing a 1st round pick- take that one off the table as it’s more than a wash in the Falcons direction. The 2011 2nd and 4th round picks are fairly far down the board @ #59 and #124, as will be next year’s #4 – assuming Ryan, White, Jones, etc..continue the Falcons winning, playoff ways. The net loss of losing two picks this year is offset by the two additional 7th rounders that the birds have via earlier trades with New England and San Francisco. So we’re down to losing the twenty something pick in 2012 and the 2nd rounder this year as the only spots where the Falcons might miss out on an impact player, none of which will have near the impact of Jones.
Good job Thomas! Now just work your usual magic with the 3rd, 5th, 6th and three 7th rounders still in your arsenal and tonight’s whining will be long forgotten.

What the he## would we get? You never know what you are going to really get in the draft. I believe Joe Montana was a third round pick. Ryan Leaf was #2 overall, Aundray Bruce #1 overall, and the list goes on. I just think they gave up too much. As others have said, now we only lose by fewer points when the defense gets torched. I do not like putting all my chips on one square. Spread the chips, and you have a better shot at hitting a winner.

Fustest with mostest. Good move. Falcons drafting to their strength, not their weaknesses. With Matt “damn sure can throw a long pass” Ryan able to throw to Roddy and Julio, defensive weaknesses are indirectly addressed to a significant degree. And the draft ain’t over.

Mel Kiper’s take on Julio Jones:
Jones’ size and speed combination is the best in the draft at the position and his development as a wideout over the past year shows a determination and work ethic that will be loved by the coaching staff. A gifted athlete, what you love about Jones is that he blocks as hard as he runs routes.

This is one way to fight fire with fire….Dimitroff knows more that all you clowns combined. Now the Falcons will have an unstoppable offense just like Green Bay. You can go 2 ways in battle, try to stop their offense by improving your defense and/or improve your own offensive assault and now there is NO defense that can stop the Atlanta offense. It can only stop itself. It is basically a mirror of the Green Bay offense of 2010 but with better weapons….It is going to be a fun high scoring next few years if the running backs hold up! Good job! To the morons who cant see the forest through the trees or think outside the box…you will eat crow in 5 months!

Dimitroff once again blows the first round pick. Way too much to give up and now we get to address our defensive woes in the third round. At least he won’t screw up next year’s first rounder since he threw it away. I’ll give the man credit for finding late round talent, but please leave him out of the draft room on day one.

Dimitroff and the rest of the brain trust probably also fell in love with his downfield blocking abilities . . . this will help Falcons’ running and passing games . . . The only way this can be a good pick is if Arthur said get an explosive offensive guy in the draft and I’ll open the wallet and buy us a couple of explosive defensive guys. This move came out of the blue but I like it. Dimitroff already has a solid team, now he is trying to create an area of strength that other teams can’t match up with. How many teams have 2 corners who are fast and physical enough to match up with Roddy White and Julio Jones? Plus nobody will outwork Jones; he is exactly the kind of player Dimitroff and Smith want as a leader on the Falcons.

I swear some of you so called fans have absolutely no clue! The falcons needed to make a move like this(Great job TD!) Think about it….we needed another explosive offensive threat. Julio can catch, run and block. Teams are gonna have to pay attention to this guy. Also, the falcons are a Winning Team…I repeat…a Winning Team. We really don’t need as many so called pieces as some of you think we do. Peria will be 100% this year and Corey peters is only going to get better this year. This in it self will help the pass rush. Not only that…the falcons go and grab either charles johnson or Ray Edwards in free agency(write it down!) So stop ya crying!!!

and everybody has to remember as well, when FA starts, if any other teams signed our FA, then we will get a Draft Pick and some of the RFA has tenders on there(Grimes/1st Round Tender), so we will get those pick back.
For the trade, I swear that yall need to realize that we aint no last place team or a team rebuilding, We was the top seed in the NFC and second in wins with a offense that didnt push alot and defense was always breaking. Now we will have not only a another target in the offense, also Jones can grown with Ryan together as Young/Rice was in SF. and we still have we had 9 picks in the draft.
FA is coming as well and we need vets now on Defense not no rookies. This is will make Atlanta a very dangerous offense team and shot a bow at MM ship as well, if he doesnt do well, then he is gone.

Great move in my opinion. The Birds can address other needs with their remaining picks and we still have free agency. Also some of the positions we needed filled may be done by players we already have. Those players just need to play to their full potential. powerglide, yea the d was pretty good against average to below average teams but did you see the playoff game? we lost that game becasue we couldn’t stop an elite offense. We need an explosive player on defense to rush the passer every bit as much (or more) than an explosive offensive player. The elite teams in the league do not give up that many picks for 1 player and that is why the pick has potential to be a huge mistake.

All of you panning this pick just don’t get it. This is an EXTREMELY weak draft. There isn’t much in the way of impact players after the first 20 or so. We would not have gotten much sitting at 27. I agree that we paid a bit high with that many picks, but to add a receiver that gives us the best tandem in the NFL?? And don’t forget free agency is coming up AFTER the draft this year because of the lock out.

Everyone saying we gave up too much, are still thinking on a collegiate level. Julio is bigger and faster that AJ. Julio ran a 4.3 40 at the combine with a pulled hamstring. This kid has won a championship at every place he was at. He dropped passes, but delivered whenever it was needed. The Falcons now have the most prolific offense in the NFL. Defense will be addressed in free agency.

Why did we let Marty Hernie pick for us! If the falcons do not win this year , we just gave away the future. The way the packers ran over the defense and the way we could not stop the Saints in the last meeting, what will we do now?
You notice how the Falcons do not get to host a Monday Night game even though we were the #1 NFC seed. No one respects the Falcons and this just sets us back, if we cannot score 50 points a game. Too bad we will not have that First pick next year, ” I guarantee it, unfortunately.”

Julio is way too drop prone to give up 4 picks over the next 2 drafts if in fact Atl didn’t have to give up even more. I can only hope that there are moves planned that will make this inane trade a lot less painful.

Is somebody moonlighting w/ the Browns on the side? They made out like the Cowboys in the Hershel/Vikings trade. Man I WAS so excited about this team this year too. A DT in the 20’s (staying put), would’ve made a lot more sense

Typical TD trade. He falls in love with a player and gives up whatever it takes to make it happen. Gotta admire a guy for his convictions, but it’s not really the drafting style that I prefer. When people complain that we gave up too much for Jones, it’s not about the trade value chart. We’re talking about three probable starts (two firsts and a second) and one or two solid backups for one player. That’s a lot. Also, I’m not a fan of drafting WR’s high in the first round.

The falcons gave up a lot clearly, but if he ends up being a star like everyone thinks then it is well worth it. As a uga fan, it makes it a little painful to think that they could have had AJ, AJ’s hands are better, but physically Jones looks better. However, if he ends up as a bust, this could be something to kill a franchise on their way up.

None of you have the knowledge of football and the scouting of football players like the Falcons or any other NFL team does. I’m sure TD did the best he could to trade up to get Green, but it wasn’t there. I think this trade was the right move b/c right away with Jones there is that TD threat in the passing game that the offense needed. I also think Kroy Biermann will be ready to prove himself this year and that the secondary will be better with another year of experience. GO FALCONS!!! right so your point is . . . we CAN afford to be throwing away our best picks for the next 2 years w/ all of these defensive holes, for another better than avg. WR (currently have R. White, M. Jenkins, H.Douglass & TE TOny Gonzalez), who has a tendency to drop the ball? You know we’re going to have to empty the bank out to pay this kid (which we already did last year for White by the way), so w/ what $ r we going to be luring these Defensive free agents everyone keeps talking about??

You sound like that of either an ex- male cheerleader (we’ve all been around one of those right?) or probably an Alabama man, which is fine – your school is again a powerhouse, but . . . again this it the NFL – Jones was an above avg. player on one of the best teams (& most exposed/watched) college teams over the past 3 years. Had he not been on Bama, we’d be speaking of Julio as a 2nd rounder. As another reader commented he’s not worth 2 starters & 3 quality back-ups that u’d hope to get out of the draft the next 2 years.

Guys stop complaining! TD and blank saw a player they really wanted and they went after him. How many late round picks actually turn out to be studs? Julio will be a STUD for the Falcons with Roddy White on the other side. 3,4 round picks are a big reach! I love this deal! They will sign free agents and get guys who didnt get drafted to fill their defensive needs. Great job Falcons! Also give the Hawks some credit closing out Orlando!

First, I saw Atlanta moved up and grabbed a Game Changer.
I wondered what they had swapped for such good fortune.
So yes, there is some sticker shock.
But, the picks exchanged were all late in the rounds this year and, it should be expected that next year’s first rounder would be a late in the round pick as well.
Odds are, none of the later picks, and possibly the sum total of them, don’t put the points on the board or the 4th quarter TDs that Jones has in him. Roll dice for the tide.

I don’t understand the logic of well we’re shooting for A.J. but came up just short so we go for the next guy at the same position?! That’s like if Miami had snagged Matt Ryan instead of Long, we’d automatically picked Chad Henne, b/c he’s the next QB available?! Wouldn’t have made sense?!
You get a chance to get a REAL blue chipper as in Green or Patrick Peterson, u make this trade – if it falls through – u don’t just settle, for a 2nd tier guy – u stay put or seek something else to fill another Defensive hole – as that’s as greatest team need. Am I wrong?!

We had a great offense – we got out butts kicked all over the field when it counted in the playoffs on Defense. How does having a great offense in any way help our defense – Julio’s not exactly a ball control acquisition??
This is a terrible move.
Julio may be a great athlete, but so is Darius Heyward-Bay & we all see what a difference he’s made – to me this is the same kind of assinine pick.

I think Julio is one that will prove to be a great pick. Counting all the picks we gave up, we have to remember he was our 1st round pick, so we gave up a 2 and 4. I would have preferred not to have given up our 1st in 2012, but that is what it took. I’m glad that he is big and physical, and has all the combine stats.
With some hardnose training, he will learn to concentrate and not have those drops. His size is a real advantage, and I’m glad we didn’t pick some light weight that isn’t going to be able to take the NFL thumping. Good Pick!

Bold move for sure. At first glance looks like we gave up alot, but if you think in terms of the 2 mid-to-late first rounders being P. Jerry and S. Weatherspoon– Or S. Baker and M. Jenkins, then maybe not such a bad move after all. At least it shows TD is not sleeping well after the Green Bay game. My only concern is that Mularkey could turn Jerry Rice and Barry Sanders into busts so there’s real concern that he’ll use Julio primarily as an outside edge blocker for 376 more hand-offs to the Burner. Or my favorite Mularkey trick play when Ice throws a quick horizontal toss to the far WR for a nice 0.03 yard gainer.

Guys this is a verry good move trust me. the falcons are gonna get a stud D.E in free-agency. They already have two very good corners, all they need is a nickel corner. Falcons are probably going to pick in the late 20s hopfully 32 so they dont miss out on a lot. You idiots-trust me, you don’t know more about what the Falcons need, what they should have done or who they should have picked than the front office at Flowery Branch. This was the best pick of the draft for the Falcons. Julio would not have been there at 27 and for the Falcons to do what they did shows how much they know the game, know what they need and know who they should have picked. While I am sure you are all nice people, I am pretty confident that none of you could do a better job running the Falcons. So stop hating, get on board with the rest of the real fans and jump up and down with your hands in the air cuz baby the Falcons are for real. I am going to buy my number 8 jersey now.

You guys have to think about the numbers Julio put up….keep in mind that he was injured during the majority of his college days…..and the most important thing that I think most people are overlooking is the fact that during his days at Alabama, they never had a quality QB that could deliver the ball to him. I’ve seen on too many occasions where Julio would be open in the secondary by 5 yards and the ball wasnt even thrown his way. If Bama would have had the same quality QB’s that UGA had… Julio’s numbers would have been outstanding. He was handicapped by John Parker Wilson and Greg McElroy. This is a great pickup for the Falcons.

The Falcons need LINEMEN, both offensive & defensive and had they stayed at pick #27 they could have had Cam Heyward, Derek Sherrod, or Muhammad Wilkerson, or Akeem Ayers (DE/LB).
This was wayyyyy too much to draft a WR that figures to be a solid NFL Player, but no one is projecting Who-Lee-Oh Jones to be anohter Andre Johnson-type NFL WR.
I have agreed with all of Dimitroff’s prior drafts, but on this one he made a huge mistake.
The Falcons need to get more physical on both lines of scrimmage and giving up this many picks for a WR is not the way to get it done.
This Draft was deep for both Off. & Def. Linemen, all the Falcons had to do was stay put and let some talented guys fall into their lap, instead they got impatient and blew it.

Julio Jones is a very good player. I think he’s a lot like Anquan Boldin. He is definitely going to improve the Falcons.
With that said, that is a LOT to give up for any single player, particularly a wide receiver. By making this trade, the Falcons are basically saying their “process” is close to completion and their window for winning a Super Bowl starts now. Because let’s face it, if they didn’t have confidence in the talent currently on the roster, they would have hung on to some more of those picks.
Jones will be a damn good player. Will the Falcons be a good enough team without the services of the players they could have taken with those picks? We’ll see.

OK people let’s calm down here. We got a bonafide threat opposite Roddy White. Let’s just understand that we have trusted our coaching staff and front office thus far. now ain’t the time for us to be jumping all over them about this. We did go 13-3 last year. the playoffs might have been disappointing but the regular season was spot on. Julio and Roddy are going to be very dangerous….patience

I hate this deal. Jones is far from being a sure star in The NFL. He runs poor routes. He takes his eyes off the ball and drops too many. He gets little separation and only caught a couple of deep tds his whole career at Bama. I wouldn’t have given 2 1st, a 3rd and 4th for AJ and he’s a MUCH better prospect.

we still have six more picks. I think it was a good move(bold move), but a good one. all we have to do is target a pass rusher with the 3rd round pick either a DE or DT that can push the center in the backfield. and get O line with the rest of the picks

Some of the comments here are just idiotic. If you don’t know what you are talking about, don’t make up BS. Unlike AJ, Julio has true real work ethic. He is a good person, does not get in trouble and is an “angry” WR. (I am a huge Alabama fan and I was excited when he selected Alabama). I have been screaming for Julio and hoping that my Falcons would trade-up to get him. Yes I am biased, but I have watched this kid since he came to Alabama. Someone said he can’t run routes; someone else said he can’t catch. I am sure someone said he can’t block. Well trust me he does it all and does it better than anyone else-he was voted all SEC his 3 years, he does not complain, he works hard, say’s yes sir to his coaches and is going to be the first one to practice and the last one to leave the film room. You guys have no idea how freakishly good this kid is and unless you watched him play-you can’t have an opinion of him. And if you have a bad opinion, then you have not seen him play. He is a Falcon, we should be very thankful as fans that the Falcons have decided that they want to improve their offense with an impact player. Oh and for those of you shouting “DE” remember, there are plenty of picks left and there are plenty of Falcons who have been picked in the past; the average age of the team is 26. This was a fantastic draft; quite frankly one that the Browns could not afford-with next years #1 pick at 32…The Falcons get the better end of that trade. Well done guys, proud of my Falcons doing what it takes to really improve the team with immediate impact, speed and attitude. Keep it up TD and team. It is moves like this that make me proud to be a life long Falcon fan.

Great Move!!! The Falcons were not going to get an impact DE at 27. They took a chance, but I believe Julio will make the Falcons and fans more than happy. I think Dmitroff saw that the past two teams that have won Super Bowls, Packers and Saints, have done it with a stable of great WRs and great QB play. Players like Julio don’t come around every season. Now the Falcons could have the best WR tandem in the league in the next couple of seasons. Plus, people still seem to think that Roddy White is really young. I think he is 30 now. He is in the prime of his career, but it will not hurt having Julio to take some pressure off and become the man once Roddy slows a bit.

I suspect a major motivation here is that there was no strong feeling of good value at 27. Just as surely, they have eyes on some people they feel will be good value in rounds 3-7–there will be a diamond in the rough somewhere in those picks. The LB or DE they need to pressure QBs will come from somewhere, free agency I guess. And Julio Jones is a great add for us. The only issue I do not see being discussed is the speed RB we need.

ATL gave up alot but will reap the rewards with the most physical receivivers in the NFL with White and Jones. This will make Matty Ice an even better QB. The other team can’t score if they can’t get on the field. Jones is also a very good down field blocker and will help the run game. Too many pluses to mention here.

Everyone has different emotions on this deal. I’m still wondering myself. He’s a good blocker that drops some balls. We gave away a lot of picks but I think when you have a good team it’s sometime better to add a really great one than a few good ones. I hope he is great however if this position is that important, we could have had DeSean Jackson last year and been looking for a pass rusher this year. I still think FA is the place to find our pass rusher. Again that could have been Peppers.

What Cold Hard Facts had to say:
Atlanta traded up with Cleveland for the No. 6 pick. They had two obvious needs: a playmaker in the passing game and a playmaker on the defensive line. They opted for the former with Jones, who was an open-field gamebreaker in Alabama’s run-first offense. Again, picking WRs high in the draft is almost always a bad decision. There’s a high fate of failure at a position that really has minimal impact on the success of a team, despite the NFL’s obsession with the position. But the Falcons felt the need to give QB Matt Ryan some help: despite his big-time rep, Atlanta ranked just 19th last year in average per pass attempt.

These blogs are funny. The Dawgs and War Eagle fans are calling this a bad pick. Truth is that none of us know. It’s pure speculation. AJ Green could turn out to be a bust. Anyone thinking the Falcons should have traded up to get him don’t realize that Cincy wasn’t going to give that pick away unless the Falcons were willing to trade even more. Let’s give Julio a chance. He should add some depth for Matt Ryan.

I’m curious if tonight we’ll hear “the browns have traded their 2nd round pick to the atlanta falcons” for a player, maybe Mike Jenkins, since the league year technically starts today and players can be traded. Like the Julio move!!! With losing the draft picks this year and next doesn’t this now make that floating money out there not being spent? What I mean is, can’t that money be used now on signing our own free agents and signing Ray Edwards, Mathias Kiwanuka or Charles Johnson? Interesting tweet reported last night at the end of the draft after the Saints drafted Mark Ingram? Bush tweeted ” Its been fun New Orleans”. How would Bush look in a Falcons uniform? Would you define Bush as explosive? We grabbed Dunn a few years back from Tampa Bay why not Bush from the Saints?

1. We gave up one first round pick next year (the other was a swap) for everyone yelling we gave up two
2. If we get Nnamdi Asomugha and put grimes on the nickel we will have the best secondery in the league. We freed up money with less high draft picks and we showed Nnamdi we want to be winners which is what he wants.
3. We are deep at every position on D (except linebacker) and the sacks will come with better coverage and our line is more experienced.

While this will produce some dividens, I’m a little disapointed. I think TD and MS got a little case of tunnel vision and took a HUGE risk that didn’t necessarily have to be taken. In my opinion we should have boned up the defense. Our O was good enough last year to go deep into the playoffs if not for our D giving up too many points. Take all our picks to get that D up to a respectable level and then next year get your receiver out of Calvin Johnson. They guy is still a beast and he’s from ATL. His family is here, he went to GT, loves the city and being close to his family. And he already has 2 condos here. He would have jumped at the chance to be on the ATL Falcons with Matt Ryan and Roddy White… perfect tandum. But it will never be… and I think we’ll be okay with JJ – but we would have been better with CJ

Without reading anyone else’s post, I’m probably repeating a common theme but here’s how I see it:
Given Dimitroff’s good maybe even great track record of finding solid players in the draft’s later rounds, this seems an awful lot to give up in exchange for any one player. I’m not all that high on Julio Jones personally but I can concede that there’s a possibility he can be a game changer; at that, however, I can’t see how any one single player that’s not a quarterback can be worth five.
What I take from the deal is that the Falcons A.) expect to improve their defensive personnel once the free agency period begins or B.) that the staff sees so many holes that not all of them can be fixed so they’ve adopted the strategy simply trying to outscore the opposition.
I don’t like being skeptical but this one’s a head scratcher to me. Right now I’d say the risks involved are unlikely to justify the reward but hopefully I’m dead wrong.

Please people, TD has taken us to a level that we have never seen before. This is now a well respected organization, have you guys really forget about free agency? We are very lucky to have him at the controls. several plus’s here.
Blocking down field – (we are a run first offense) how many times have we ALMOST broke away for a touchdown? Do not underestimate good blocking. I know it’s not glamourous.
Speed – This young stud will take away the double team on Roddie White, If you remember, Roddie dropped several balls early in his career. Our Coach’s worked this out of him!
I am really suprised at all the people who complain when we don’t make aggresive move’s are now here complaining when we do.
I grew up here in Atlanta, I went to my first game at 8 years old, I have watched every game (that was not blacked out) for many , many years) I trust this organization, I trust TD!

this article was taken from http://www.profootballweekly.com/2011/02/26/jones-takes-pride-in-blocking-ability
this is something to be excited about
INDIANAPOLIS — In Alabama’s game against South Carolina on Oct. 9, WR Julio Jones fractured a bone in his hand. The next week, he played through the pain, but caught only one pass for eight yards.
The next week, he had a slightly better outcome: he grabbed 12 passes for a school-record 221 yards against Tennessee. It is that toughness that has NFL scouts looking at Jones as a top-15 pick in this year’s draft.
Much of Jones’ Saturday news conference at the NFL Scouting Combine focused on his blocking ability, not the normal topic of conversation for a receiver. But then again, Jones isn’t your typical receiver: when asked who he models his game after, the first name out of his mouth was Ravens MLB Ray Lewis.
“I love how (Lewis) plays, Hines Ward as well, the way he blocks, the way he is committed on every play,” Jones said. “I have a defensive mentality, I’m not scared to hit, I’m a physical guy, and I look for that. I like to hit defensive players because they’re not used to getting hit, they’re used to hitting offensive players and getting them out of their comfort zone, so when I hit them I try to get them out of their comfort zone.”
For Jones, who checked in at the Combine at 6-2, 220 pounds, takes pride in his blocking ability because he views it as a way to help out his teammates.
“I’m not a selfish player,” Jones said. “I go out there and block. I know just like the running back, he has got to sit in there for protection when I go out there for a deep pass. I want the ball, too, when I go out, so I know he’s going to block for me and he’s going to handle his responsibilities, so I try to do the same.”
Inevitably, Jones was asked to compare himself to fellow SEC star A.J. Green, and offer his opinion on who is the better receiver. However, Jones refused to make any predictions about Green, who is training for the draft at the same facility that Jones is, and whom Jones considers a friend.
“A.J. Green is a great receiver, and there’s a whole bunch of other guys that are great as well,” Jones said. “I can’t say I’m better than (A.J.), I can’t say he’s better than me.”
In addition to his physical style of play, Jones also had to battle through multiple injuries during the season, not just the broken hand. But Jones refused to make any excuses.
“A lot of guys have injuries,” Jones said. “Unfortunately I had probably more than everybody else, but I didn’t quit, I didn’t stop, it didn’t hold me back, I didn’t miss any practice, or nothing like that. I finished my season.”

Great move Falcons, I’m just glad they’re trying, saw something they liked and went for it…I trust the front office of the Falcons, I think they add defense in free agency and get a few 2012 picks back through trades. We can’t evaluate the move until we see what happens on the field and what we do in free agency.
Take the gun away from your head falcons fans…back away from the ledge!!

Since Newton was drafter first does this mean he won’t be taking a cut in pay from what he was making at Auburn?

I think we traded to much, but I like having a receiver with that kind of height and speed. All the weapons in the world wont help if we cant teach Mike Mularkey how to call plays. It wont matter what you do if you continue to Run, Run, Pass every freaking time you have the ball.

the falcons was a 13 win team. they don’t need multiple draft picks, they need impact players. I feel they got the best WR for them. JJ will be a number two. and dont forget we still have free agency. I have a feeling the Blank will be spending some of the Home Depot money in the FA market for Defense

GREAT MOVE!!!!!!! couldn’t have been better
1.) we save the money we would have to pay those other picks.
2.)Arthur Blank Okay’d this move, so he will be spending money in FA(Can you say Nnamdi Asoumogha??)
3.) We still have 6 more Picks.
4.) T.D still can trade Jenkins, Douglas, Snelling or somebody and get another 2nd for next year or late first.
This move makes Roddy being doubled less effective with a similar guy on the other side who is more explosive. Yeah we needed Defensive help, but who were we going to take at 27? Yeah, Bowers dropped but it was for a reason and I still wouldn’t mind having him if we can trade players. Give it half a season and T.D will be up for another executive of the year honor..Especially if him and Arthur sign Nnamdi

Another thought comes to mind………….not that Roddy is going thru the motions but drafting Jones might amp up his game a notch.

Don’t fret, When Justin Houston stops falling,we can pick him in the third round! Great trade of picks for Julio Jones! Most of the later round picks won’t help as much jj. Has Witherspoon or Jerry helped that much from the last two drafts? I am just happy the Falcons didn’t just sit there for the Tenth best Defensive End!I have followed the draft for as long as the Falcons have existed, and this is one of the better moves the falcons have ever made! Besides who would want a player as dumb as A.J, and I am a big dawg fan!

I cant believe we still have idots saying we gave up TWO first round picks…. It’ll be ok guys, we still have six more picks this year and we still have free agency! Roddy turns 30 this year & we traded up for as close to a sure thing as you can get and filled a need at the same time. Guys please stop thinking your smarter than TD just because you play madden or own a fantasy team… GD! We were 13-3 last year!!!

There is a typo in the photo caption. Bryan Evan was not playing anything close to “defense” when he was at UGA, let alone in that gave against Alabama…

JOEY THE BULL you r an absolute MORON! Julio Jones will be mediocre & probably hurt for most of his career. He works hard at . . . DROPPING BALLS that’s right.
As for your juvenile comment that ‘we the fans must know better than the front office,’ unfortunately it appears that is the case!
TD PULLED A MAJOR MATT MILLEN THIS YEAR!
Totally Unnecessary & JJ is NOT WORTH what we gave up. AJ GREEN & PATRICK PETERSON will most likely be in the HOF in the future. Julio Jones . . . maybe in your BAMA HoF, but I could even see that NOT happening @ such a storied program.
Congrats BROWnS u took us behind the shed on this one!

I come in peace, I didn’t bring artillery. But I am pleading with you with tears in my eyes: If you #uck with me, I’ll kill you all.

You can talk all day long about what the Falcons had to give up. They already have a lot of good young talent on defense…and on paper there starting lineup on offense just got that much better.
Bottom line….J Jones >>>>M Jenkins

MARK THIS DOWN To all you AJ loving fans Julio Jones is a much better overall receiver than A J .AJ played in a pro style offense with a #1 Quarterback pass first. JULIO played in a run first offense with aHEISMAN TROPHY player in MARK INGRAM.Julio is faster stronger and tougher than AJ GREEN.I VE NEVER SEEN A TEAM TAKE julio out of the game but I VE SEEN AJ crawling on the field injured. While Julio is riding EHE BIRDS to the SUPER BOWL AJ will be shut down and injured by the likes of Pittsburgh and BALTIMORE.You all seem to forget that JULIO AND CO. KNOCKED THE BLACK OUT IN ATHENS NO PUN INTENDED and while JULIO enjoyed a great game AJ WAS SHUI DOWN.i D RATHER GO TO WAR WITH AMAN INSTEAD OF A TIPPIN TEENAGER.Please check the head to head stats THE above picture is no fluke

Easy decision here between Green and JJ….rather have a kid out of college coached by the Saban Machine than the Richt Rabblehouse…. JJ is a multi-purpose addition…he displayed many more talents than Green (and not to disparage Green and his own abilities)… JJ will last longer than Green in the Big Show… he will work harder and has already been groomed for the professional arena… unfortunately, Green has only trained and been prepared for the sandlot league… believe me, the men in the front office are eons above the Smith family….they have proven that they are walking the right path… Jones will fit in well at all levels….remember, a SABAN product…!!!!
