FLOWERY BRANCH — Falcons general manager Thomas Dimitroff pulled off a major shocker, trading up into the first round to select wide receiver Julio Jones.

The Falcons reportedly sent their first, second and fourth round picks along with next seasons’ first round pick to move up 21 spots.

Here is Jones’ bio:

Julio Jones, Alabama, 6-3, 221: He is from Foley, Ala. He set school records with 194 catches, 3,287 yards and 43 touchdowns at Foley High. He was rated the No. 1 receiver in the nation by rivals.com and scout.com. He signed with Alabama over Florida State, Florida, Oklahoma and Texas Tech.  As a freshman, he led the Crimson Tide with 58 catches. He also had 924 yards receiving and four touchdowns. In his sophomore season, Jones battled through a string of juniors. He rebounded to help the Crimson Tide win the BCS national championship as he caught 43 passes for 596 yards and four touchdowns. Last season, he caught 78 passes for 1,133 yards and seven touchdowns. He was noted for his downfield blocking in the run game. Also, he did have some problems with the occasional dropped pass. Despite having a broken bone in his foot, he turned in a phenomenal workout at the scouting combine. He ran the 40-yard dash in 4.39 seconds, had a broad jump of 11 feet, 3 inches and a vertical jump of 38 1/2 inches.

1) It sounded like the ESPN announcers said the Falcons thought they had AJ Green but CIN reneged. If so, this UGA fan is eternally disappointed.

2) Did you see the ransom for Julio? 2 first round, a second round, and two fourth rounds. Wow. I think he is good, but that is Ricky Williams trade territory.

I should be thrilled that the Falcons got Julio, but I’m disappointed to hear that Atlanta almost had Green. :/

It’s a lot to give up but the Falcons only need a few more pieces and this is a big one. We can add a DE in free agency.

Now ATL has the 2 ugliest WR’s in football history. What a huge mistake by Dimitroff. This guy can’t stay healthy.

Green is so much better than Jones. Jones caught 78 passes BUT how many did he drop??

Wow o wow. Did you see how many draft picks they gave Cleveland??? wow.

The irony is the Falcons have 2 great deep threats now, but Ryan can’t throw a deep ball!

You are right about the balls…But when you are as close as the Falcs are, sometimes it takes a move like this. Julio is fast and defenses will need to pay attention to him. Roddy should have a great year this year!

wow………..what years are the picks for …….. are they all for this draft or a couple of future drafts?
I think TD is going to use some additional picks to trade back into the 2nd round for a DE or BPA.

Very disappointed in what the falcons gave up… julio jones’s hands are not any better than michael jenkns… he’ll be more physical than jenkins, but that is the only positive I can see… did somebody let that fool ken herock back in the building?

How many weapons do you need on offense? We need defensive playmakers. I am not completely sold on Dimitroff = genius. I am not saying he is horrible, but the jury is still out, in my view

Wow, wow, wow. That’s too much to for Julio Jones. What about another Cornerback, DE. I’m very disappointed. You can get a Ocho Cinco, TO, or someone else in free agency. I can understand they would have gotten AJ, but all of this for Julio. Come on Thomas and Arthur, you all are better than this!!!!

Come on people let it play out. They gave up four picks for him and really its two with the 2nd this year and 1st next. So we will be fine, and when play the Saints, Tampa and Carolina and they can’t matchup then everyone will be singing the Falcons praises. LET IT PLAY OUT PEOPLE.

1) They gave up too much.

2) On the other hand, the Bengals apparently valued Green too and aren’t they usually wrong about everything?

Like how these Falcons deal! Maybe too much for Julio only time will tell. BUT you have to admit they have the guts to make a bold move and Julio is as talented as a receiver can be. AJ may be better and I’d rather have him, but happy they got Julio. Now up to the coaches to work on his droppitis!

I seem to recollect Roddy White dropping a few balls early in his career. I also heard Mel Kiper say this kid graded as the highest rated blocking WR ever….I did not like next year’s number one though…but if we execute this year…that pick is late anyway…money for free agency.

I like this move a lot. he has a huge strength advantage over AJ Green..corners are good enough in the NFL that you need that added strength at WR to take the ball away sometimes.

That is alot to give up, but TD has a plan. I think you are going to see some of the free agent o-line leave in free agency. I think we will pick up draft picks from our free agents leaving. I think that is the thinking by TD.

AJ is a game changer.. hopefully Julio can turn into Andre Johnson.

do like his blocking ability, but AJ was a decent blocker, wiry strong..

@ any rate.. welcome to Atlanta Julo.. you’re a hard worker and pro..

It’s pretty easy to see who the Doggie fans are on this blog. As you can tell from my username, I’m a Tech fan, but I do respect AJ Green’s ability. I don’t think the Falcons lost anything, however, in picking up Jones instead of Green. Jones played for Saban for three years – his toughness is proven. Green? Gotta wonder a bit about mental toughness – the kid knowingly broke an NCAA rule that may well have cost his team three wins. I wish them both well, and I think having Jones on one side, White on the other give them Falcons one hellacious pair of threats at WR.
