Bill Parcells reflects on if he’d drafted Matty Ice

What if the Dolphins had taken Matt Ryan in 2008? (Jason Getz jgetz@ajc.com)

BIRDLAND –  Duane Charles Parcells, who’s also known in the football world as Bill Parcells, revealed  to Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald that he wishes that he’d taken Matt Ryan in the 2008 NFL draft.

Parcells, who’s no longer with the Dolphins and is not media-friendly, conducted a brief phone interview with the persistent Salguero, who writes that he made more than 40 requests and eventually likely wore down Parcells. (Way to go hard in the paint Armando!)

Here’s what the Duane had to say about Matty Ice:

Parcells will probably have to answer for his work in Miami during his ESPN show. Perhaps he will address it there with more depth than he did with me. But let’s tackle the highlights now:

Should he have picked quarterback Matt Ryan instead of offensive tackle Jake Long in 2008? Knowing the results, “maybe, we should have,” he said.

But the Long pick, the choice of a player who has been in the Pro Bowl every year he has played and will be Hall of Fame worthy if he continues his current course is difficult to criticize.

Who would be the Falcons quarterback if the Dolphins had taken Ryan? The Falcons probably would have taken LSU defensive tackle Glen Dorsey with the third overall pick. Or, the Falcons  could have traded out of the position and picked up Joe Flacco, who was the next quarterback selected with the 18th pick.

They could have handed the keys over to  Chris Redman for a year and then selected Mark Sanchez in 2009.

In 2007, Parcells turned his nose up at a position with the Falcons. He was reportedly set to become the vice president of football operations. But some contended that he used the Falcons’ position as leverage to land a similar czar of football position in Miami.

Or perhaps he had some facts about what was going on in Surry, Va.?

Well, Parcells is set to do some work for ESPN during the draft. Perhaps,  he’ll go into more detail on the worldwide leader.

Parcells is nothing but a bag of wind! He thought he could get by with a mediocre QB at Miami like all his other stops. Come On, Phil Simms, Drew Bledsoe, Quincy Carter, Chad Henne, et cetera. Does any of these guys say franchise. Simms was hurt one year and somebody with the letter H took the Giants to the Super Bowl. Parcells is just over rated at best. The best thing he had was Bill Belichek who is probably the best coach of all time in the NFL.

“Who would be the Falcons quarterback if the Dolphins had taken Ryan?”

I believe people are banned from posting his name on this blog. Just sayin’…

Ignore Chris Mortensen and the other naysayers. You reported the quote accurately.

Personally, I’m glad the Dolphins took Jake Long.

I wish Parcels had taken Ryan. He has done nothing in the post season and that is all that matters! And no, I do not care about the regular season records, even Jim Mora won a playoff game.

By the way, that isn’t Chris Mortenson, it is some fake account that makes that guy seem pathetic…. just be yourself dude… if that isn’t good enough then work on being a better person

Seriously, why would a guy name Jay Lambert have a twitter account that makes people believe you are @Mortreport (his real twitter), I mean if you are so pathetic that you need to pretend to be someone else, at least pretend to be someone more exciting that Chris Mortensen lol

If Cam Newton does, in fact, go to Carolina, would that solidify the claim that the NFC South is the best division?

Quit the “Matty Ice” crap. He has not won Anything. He has played like @#%$ during any game that is important. Just ask the Packers or Saints (during the last meeting) or the Cardinals.

Is Parcells unhappy that he failed to draft Ryan? Is Arthur still upset that the Tuna left him at the alter? I’d say yes and no exactly in that order.

Thanks Reid! I did bow down to the fake Chris and change the headline. He reflected on the move, however briefly.

I wish the Dolpins would of had taken Ryan. The Flacons would be better off with help on defence. I just dont understant the hype surronnding Ryan.

Jake Long is one of the premier left tackles in the world and he says he wishes he would have drafted Ryan? I don’t care who your QB is, if he’s not well protected, he’s no good. Jake Long is the type of guys that can protect your QB for a decade and he’s regretting that? Foolish. Look at Stafford, he hasn’t even started 20 games in his career yet. Why you ask? Because of his O-line. I’d love to have Jake Long, Joe Thomas, Ryan Clady, etc blocking for my QB.

@Everybody who says something negative about Ryan. First off the falcons are way ahead of schedule and the main reason for this is Ryan. Anybody with a shred of Football intelligence would tell you it takes five years successful off seasons to build a contender. In three years we went from winning four games to 13. Ryan is in his third year and has only played in two playoff games Ryan just needs more talent around him more playmakers. I laugh at people who say stupid stuff like Ryan is a bust or Ryan isnt as good as people say, if anything Ryan is better than what people say he is. Roddy is a good reciever but he would just be in the top 20 without Ryan but with him he is in the top five. You guys need to chill out and give him time to develop.

Hiram Saint- Are you kidding me? I can understand your questions about Ryan and his playoff performances, but Sanchez and Flacco? They win games because of one reason…DEFENSE. That’s it. Not because of their ability. I recall that going into week six against the Broncos, the CBS pregame show was touting how Sanchez hadn’t thrown any interceptions yet, but then showed highlights of at least eight passes that literally bounced off the defender’s hands. That sure sounds like an elite QB to me. Flacco and Sanchez are fortunate to be able to win games by their team kicking a couple of field goals, not their ability. If the Falcons were that stacked on defense when Ryan came into the league, I’m pretty certain he’d have won a few playoff games by now, maybe even a title.

You’re right about Jake Long but look where that has gotten the Dolphins. The Colts drafted Peyton Manning and he makes their line look like the golden standard because he can dissect defenses. Same with Drew Brees. Most of the Saints’ linemen are very overrated because of Drew Brees. Ryan would’ve done the same thing in Miami because that’s the kind of QB he is.

To all of you Matt Ryan haters, even Peyton Manning has only won 1 Super Bowl…took him awhile too……Brett Farve, I believe only has one as well…Matt will lead this team to atleast 1 and more than likely more in his days here

Thanks to D-Led for bringing us this nugget, but — please — we are going forward.

I’m SICK of hearing about the GB4 trade (and Brett Favre’s annual exercise in, uh, futility… humility, ah, yes HUBRIS.) I lived the Profit years and many others.

No regrets (other than BVG figuring out a new defensive plan against GB during last season’s playoffs because aren’t landing another less taxing schedule). But I started with positive, and I will end with “Can we have an NFL Autumn?

Give me a break on taking Jake Long. Of course you take the QUARTERBACK. The Dolphins and Falcons have brought in the same number of LT’s. The Dolphins have brought in three times the number of QB’s. And as Tony Sparano is leaving next year the new head man will “identify” QB as a “position of need” Ryan doesn’t have to prove anything to anybody. p.s. Aren’t Saints fans ignorant for being here?

Of course you take Ryan. He is a franchise quarterback. It would be great to have Jake but your team revolves around the quarterback and one great O lineman is not going to have the impact a great QB will. Atlanta will get better and better as they build. We just have to worry about keeping up with Green Bay because they also seem capable of being power house for years to come. We need need a big draft this year out of Dimi and Smitty.

For all you ingrate morons masquerading as Falcon fans, under TD, HCMS & MR2 – you have 3 consecutive winning seasons. You lost 2 playoff games due to defense – the first due to Keith Brookings bone head move, the second because GB never punted. You were in the GB game until 2:22 was left in the 1st half. Matt Ryan is a good QB, the Falcons are now a very good team.

Sorry guys Matt is overated…when the falcons can’t run…they lose. His playoff performance(s) are terrible. He never changed the snap count against Arizona and that cost us a game we should have won…not to mention that terrible interception that ended a strong opening drive. I’m a big time Falcon fan and he need to be better plain and simple. I won’t fault him for getting creamed by GB…they are just a better team than the Falcons. Ryan has to play better before I will ever consider him an elite QB…please stop with comparing him to Peyton Mannning, his not even better that Eli Manning!!!
