BIRDLAND — We pointed out last week that the Falcons are nearly certain to pick a linebacker at some point in the draft.

Most of the guys they are kicking the tires on are considered third and fourth rounders.

They’ve checked out Georgia’s Akeem Dent, California’s Mike Mohamed and others.

We need to add Miami’s Colin McCarthy to the linebacker list, according to a report by Aaron Wilson of the

McCarthy was a team captain last season for the Hurricanes. He had 34 tackles for loss, 4.5 sacks and three interceptions over his career.

I did some youtube scouting and didn’t come away impressed. Check him out for yourself. Click here.

He seemed to be chasing on a lot of plays in that Wake Forest game.

The Falcons are scouting the Hurricanes heavily for this draft. They also are checking out defensive end Allen Bailey, wide receiver Leonard Hankerson, cornerbacks Brandon Harris and DeMarcus Van Dyke.  Traditionally, the U players have that “speed and urgency” that general manager Thomas Dimitroff talks about. But these guys were just good enough to get Randy Shannon fired.

In probably a much bigger note, Wilson reported (also un-sourced) that Purdue defensive end Ryan Kerrigan was set to work out for the Falcons yesterday in Indiana. He would be under consideration for the first round pick.

The Falcons official draft picks were released on Tuesday.

The team will have its full allotment of seven picks plus two seventh round picks acquired in trades with Detroit and New England.

The draft will held April 28-30.

McCarthy in that pic reminds me of Brooking in his later years as a Falcon…don’t see that filling any needs

Three of the top 100 players – that sets up for a pretty good draft.

DOL, you are 2 for 2 in posting pics of a LB prospect getting burned. Plenty of pics on google imagine search of McCarthy making a hit.

Coloradobulldog — I tried for a better picture. But I have to use AP or AJC. Then after watching the video, I felt the picture fit perfectly.

D-led…do your research over a little. Not dissin you…just saying maybe you should take another look at McCarthy. He blew up the senior bowl and looked good at OLB..strongside. This is good news to me because I didn’t think we were looking at McCarthy. I could see jus getting him in the 3rd round. Hopefully he falls because he has 2nd round grade. Bet they worked him out to see if he could take SOLB posistion after Peterson, because we might be letting stephen nicholas go. McCarthy could learn under peterson. McCarthy can play coverage which is the most important thing with Brees in the division. Hope we get him

The Falcons can look right at home for their later round picks and they will be pleasantly surprised. Pick GT Anthony Allen in the 5th. Forget all that triple option nonsense this dude will be a beast, thrust me! Then with last 2 picks take UGA take Darryl Gamble LB who will surprise and WR Kris Durham. These guys will surprise but we know TD will go to Montana and give guys a chance. He sure won’t give a Tech guy a chance. But you saw it here, these guys will be the steals of the DRAFT!

I like the Kerrigan kid outta Purdue.. Needs (seemingly) to add 20 lbs for DE in the League, though..

He want be picked before the 7th round & you can quote me on that. The 1st 2 picks will contribute early. WR and LB will be the pick of the Falcons in that order.

I thought the Falcons got Detroit’s sixth-round pick because the Lions lost a pick for tampering violations.

I like for us to add weapons around matty so if we can trade up to grab a j greeen i would if not the wr from maryland may be there but we need more offesnsive weapons and get us one or two defense, but we need a de badly and i think free agency is where we fill that need then next year draft someone.

Hopefully, they can sign a linebacker who can get to the qb on the blitz. The current ones sure as hell can’t.

We are good at linebacker we need a end or WR, We can go linebacker abbout the 4th pick with Akeem Dent or second round with Greg jones but if we need a lb go with Justin Houston in the 1st round to play End or linebacker.

The falcons need to get a wr then a defensive end with the 2 pick then we need a speed back in the 3round after every thing else will fall in to place

McCarthy, huh? We don’t need another “chaser”, we had one and let him waltz over to Dallas…

Now Kerrigan is a whole other story. I’ll take that young fella ANY day! I’ve been waiting for the second coming of Patrick Kerney for a while…

Homer pick but Dent would be an excellent pick in the 3rd or 4th rd. He has the measurables AND the production.Kerrigan doesn’t impress me for a 1st rd pick. I’d sooner go for Allen Bailey or Houston.

Take Dent and Gamble both in late rounds. Watched them personally at UGA. Gamble was always around the ball. As far as other draft choices, man, we need some white guys on the Falcons. I’m just saying….we look like Grambling out there. GO WHITE GUYS! Get the Perdue guy and it raises the team IQ and lowers the team arrest potential immediately.

Only way we get Kerrigan is if TD is willing to trade up and grab him before Jacksonville, New England or the Aints grab him….

Should have picked up free agents Marcus Stroud and Bob Sanders to complete the D. Then, could have moved up to get AJ Green in the draft and we would have been set. Cut Jamaal Anderson and Chris Owens (these two cost us the playoff game) please. Those late 1st rounders the last few years TD picked like Jerry and Weatherspoon are not going to be good players. Lastly,…Bad move on passing up on Clay Mathews. Wake up!

I have a question

LOL…had to laugh at the idea of pulling a police report on players from “The U”.

Seems the Falcons are still interested in Bailey, but probably wanted to shift their perceived attention away from him. Watch them grab an OT in the first round, then nab Bailey in the second. Or a WR. Or, I don’t have a clue what I’m talking about (most likely choice).

Falcons relax...

@ TD is asleep. ARE YOU FOR REAL??? Bob Sanders? He gets hurt when taking a knee. And stroud? Why Stroud? We already have DT’s. Jerry 1st rounder, Peters, and then babs. That would take uneccesary cap space. And the dumbest comment of all, MOVING UP TO GET AJ GREEN!!? Do you seriously know what it would take to get him. We pick like 27th. He’s a top 5 pick PERIOD. It would take a 4 picks to get up there. Stop fantasizing and get real before calling out TD. Sean Weatherspoon IS OUR “CLAY MATTHEWS.” Weatherspoon showed plenty of flashed. Just got hurt thats all. Your doubting the guy who turner our franchise around.

Tend to agree with DOL with the picture of McCarthy. This guy is a mixture of Big Play Ray and Keith Brooking all rolled up into one. Can’t cover pass middle or sideline, short or deep, in or out, can’t cover a sweep, can’t cover a draw. Hopefully he had better games than what was depicted on the video.

The Saints emblem, the Fleur-de-lis, is a flower, a lily to be exact. Seems a little sissyfied to me.

as opposed to the 48-21 pulverizing wood-shed treatment the falcan’t got on their home field where they were suppose to be invincible, ‘cept when they have to play the Saints and Packers. saw that on TV myself.

The Falcons need play makers, no matter where they get them. Interesting that DOL thinks that players from Miami’s defense got Randy Shannon fired. Miami had the most players out of all schools invited to the NFL combine and believe me, they actually view game film of these guys before inviting them, they don’t go off of internet video (that is a real laughable way of scouting). Also, Miami’s defense played well last year. Lastly, most Miami players play well when they get to the NFL (that stiff Jammi German was the exception to the rule). DOL, so some research, which school sent the most players to the Pro Bowl last year…….Miami with 9 players.
