Here’s the story from Cam Newton’s workout. He put on a show.
PRE-PRO DAY POST BELOW
Quarterback Cam Newton will get another chance to impress NFL scouts at Auburn’s Pro Day today.
I’m heading over there and will update how theHeisman winner and Westlake High grad performs after the workout, which is scheduled to start at 1:30 p.m. I’m sure I’ll send out some live tweets. You can follow me @AJCFALCONS if you want those updates.
NFL draft analyst Mike Mayock is going to be there.

Auburn quarterback Cam Newton responds to a question during a news conference during the NFL football scouting combine in Indianapolis, Saturday, Feb. 26, 2011. (AP Photo/Darron Cummings)
More importantly, Carolina coach Ron Rivera is attending. The Panthers have the top pick in the draft. Rivera could have elected to attend Ryan Mallett’s Pro Day in Arkansas.
By now, you all know that Newton didn’t perform too well at the scouting combine. The alarming thing was that he couldn’t make the 10-yard out throw to his right side. As a right-handed quarterback, that should be his money throw.
“I don’t take the 15, 20 or 30 throws (at the combine) and have it change my mind about anything,” Mayock said. “It’s important to me as an evaluator to watch as much tape as I can, but I have to see a quarterback live. I have to see how the ball comes out of his hands.”
Newton appeared to be uncomfortable with the receivers at the scouting combine. He held onto the ball too long as he was waiting for them to cut.

Mike Mayock has Missouri's Blaine Gabbert as the top rated quarterbackentering the NFL scouting combine. Gabbert throws a pass during his team’s Setp. 19, 2009, game against Furman in Columbia, Mo. (The Associated Press/L.G. Patterson)
“That was the first opportunity I got to see the ball come out of his hands,” Mayock said. “I think he was little frustrated by his inaccuracies. He didn’t throw a bunch of completions. . .You get to the five-step (drop) and the coaches are telling you to throw to an area. You have been coached your entire life to complete passes. So there is a little bit of a contradiction for a kid that’s never done this before.”
Mayock had Missouri’s Blaine Gabbert and Washington’s Jake Locker rated ahead of Newton going into the scouting combine.
“Nothing changed for me,” Mayock said. “He has a big arm. (He has better mechanics than Vince Young or Tim Tebow or any of those other big guys. I still have the same questions I had coming in. For the next two months, I’m going to try to answer them.”
Mayock likes Newton’s intangibles.
“I saw a kid that lit up the room when we talked to him,” Mayock said. “I saw a kid that was intelligent.”
Mayock said he still has two issues with Newton.
“He played in a pass offense that was fairly simple, not a lot of reads and he didn’t have a lot of patience in the pocket,” Mayock said. “But that’s what he did to win a national championship. . .Secondly, you have to figure the kid out.”

If I am going to draft a QB for my NFL team and I have one of the first picks…
I am taking Cam over the other obvious choices.
Cam has intangibles the other guys haven’t shown me…These include good leadership skills, belief in his abilities during tough moments in games, and an athleticism that is off of the charts…
Many will say it was just college football, but he performed his magic versus the toughest teams and players college football has to offer! Future NFL defensive players from the SEC!

Cam Newton will do fine in the NFL. He is a bona fide first
round pick. I have known him since he was two years old and
watched him progress. He has been groomed to be a quarterback
since he was six years old. He has gone to numerous football
camps all over the country since he was a youth. He is the real deal!
No other quarterback in the country could have accomplished what
he did at Auburn. He has a set of unique skills. As a freshman at
Westlake High School in Atlanta, his skills were far superior to
those of his junior and senior receivers.
He has excelled at every level. He has two national championships.
He also carried his junior college team to a national championship.
He is not another JaMarcus Russell. Whether you like him or not,
judge him by his football ability. I hope he does not go to Carolina
as he will cause problems for the Falcons. I would rather that he go
to a team not in our division.
If Mallett had accomplished what Cameron Newton has
accomplished, most would be clamoring that he should be
the number one pick in the upcoming NFL draft.
I rest my case.

He thinks that he is better than he really is, therefore no real desire to have to prove himself or work his tail off. Now, there is word that he wants to be an entertainer and an icon……great….tryout for American Idol, but he will have his head taken off in the NFL trying that routine. His pimp daddy got him where he wanted in college, but no way he and the church can afford that in the NFL.

Everyone in the free world will tell you that they thought Auburn hiring Gene Chizik was at least a stretch, maybe a gamble, some would say colossal mistake. At least that’s what they said originally. So, then Auburn runs off to a perfect season and most of Auburn’s enemies and rivals say that Auburn was a one-man team – they wouldn’t have won without Cam Newton. Heisman + most every other major player of the year awards + national championship + about 5 or 6 national Coach of the Year Awards for Chizik.
At what point do you see that he is a “corch” killer, as you claim? Based on what we have heard for the last 6 months, he is the definition of a “corch” MAKER! Gene Chizik was a nobody and a terrible coach and now has a national title, the nation’s longest current winning streak and a room full of coach of the year trophies
Also, as to your assertion that he is a locker-room killer, I invite you to try reading. Read ANY article about this team from throughout the year. Pay particular attention to quotes from teammates. Not an article went by where Auburn players didn’t give credit to #2 and his leadership qualities within the huddle, locker room, practice fields, etc.
Nice try, but you need to sell crazy someplace else.

So much hatred. So many accusations. Complete lack of proof. Let’s try a fact check…
Laptop at Florida. He didn’t steal it. The OFFICIAL word from Florida is that he was guilty of purchasing a stolen laptop. He admitted to it and complied.
“Cheating” scandal at Florida. The OFFICIAL word from the UF Academic review board is that he was never scheduled to have to go and visit them. They have no record of any wrongdoing and do not know where the accusations are coming from.
Recruiting benefits. The OFFICIAL word from the NCAA is that he did nothing wrong, never knew about anything that was going on that may have been wrong. Auburn knew nothing, did nothing wrong. Both have 100% fully complied with all requests the entire time.
WHERE is your evidence? Those calling him a thief and a liar and whatever else you’re creating – do you have any evidence? Do you know of something that the FBI, NCAA and scores of Universities who recruited him couldn’t find? Every record has been searched. Every file has been opened. The ONLY thing that has come out has been the constantly-changing testimony of three alums from a rival school who happened to be the jilted bride in the recruitment. And now there are some phony tapes that were not available last fall but magically appear now. Only to be released by an Alabama supporter, radio personality. He admits that he’ll release them on the first day of his new radio show. Does that sound like sensationalized attention he’s creating for himself?
Someone … anyone … find any legitimate reason to hate Cam Newton. He beat your team, your hatred of Auburn, he smiles a lot … those are not reasons to hate Cam Newton with such an intense vitriol. Read comments from the NFL execs (who may know more about this than any of us.) They all seem to think his smile, demeanor, personality are all genuine, sincere and the type that can light up a room. I’m guessing they’ve spent more time with him than anyone posting here. Maybe they know something from FIRST-HAND ACCOUNTS. People throwing stones at him in blogs have only read hate mail from people like Thayer Evans.
Again, someone post some FACTS or any really legitimate reasons for the hatred, please. Again – the fact that he wins and smiles is not a real reason.

It just upset people to see Auburn piece together a national title team. Don’t worry that our offense GREATLY IMPROVED under the helm of Chris Todd, who was benched under the last staff. Don’t worry that our defense was abysmal last year causing us to lose 5 games, but that year 2 under our new DC produced excellent run-game results, as well as very timely defense.
I’m sorry the whole world was too busy banking on Alabama vs. Ohio State for the national title game, you sure missed a very organic and breathtaking climb to the top. By the time you all finally realized that Auburn was the real deal, these allegations have come out and it became a convenient crutch to let your little surprised heads sleep at night.
Haters are gonna hate, but the people who claim Auburn is a cellar team because of our one bad season under Tony Franklin’s office need to take a quick peruse of these stats, and tell me just how irrelevant Auburn has been. It was just that we were very fortunate to have it all come together to win a national title, which is what any team needs.
Y’all take a look at this, and tell me how surprising is it that a team that has gone undefeated 3 times in the past 20 years, including as recently as 6 years ago, made it to the nat’l title and won against a physically undersized Oregon team.

I love how Mike Mayock refuses to put Cam at the top of the QB draft board. Look at Gabbert’s numbers. He threw 16 tds. and 9 int last year. Those are not #1 pick numbers. Also, this is the same spread offense where Chase Daniels put up video game type numbers in the years before Gabbert got there. He is not impressive at all. Mayock has Jake Locker ahead of Cam also. Please!!! This guy is another Jay Cutler. He looked terrible in the Senior Bowll regressed at Washington this year. What makes him better than Newton? Please tell me. I would put Christian Ponder ahead of both Locker and Gabbert.
Carolina is going to pick Cam Newton #1 overall. That franchise needs a QB and a dose of excitment in a bad way.

Haters hate,
Actually the official word was not that Newton “did nothing wrong”. The NCAA actually stated that at the time of the allegations last year they did not have sufficient evidence to prove Newton knew what his father was doing. The case remains open as the NCAA continues to investigate, it’s far from over. Now, it’s true that the kid deserves the benefit of doubt, but if you really believe Cam’s dad was asking for that money (which by the way is a fact admitted to by all parties concerned and shows there was unethical conduct going on behind the scenes by the Newton family) without Cam himself knowing about it I have some waterfront property in Kansas to sell you.
You have a right to your opinion, but your opinion seems to be far less than objective. Run first QB’s don’t win championships in the NFL, end of story. Whoever drafts Newton better be prepared to build a good system around him and give him 3-5 yrs to develop. Newton is a hell of an athlete and can find some position to play even if it’s just as a specialty QB in short yardage/goal line situations like Denver used Tebow, but he has a long way to go to make it in the NFL, time will tell…

I am not too sure Carolina will jump on Cam so quick. He is a excellent athelete but I think it might take an NFL season, for him to adapt his physical skills into an NFL team’s requirements. Carolina has so many positions they need to fill, unless they can stick with Clausen for one more year, I don’t know if they will take him. A lot could depend on the Carolina fanbase, as they would be required to swallow another bad year, and Carolina Fans might not be willing to do that. Then again, one player doesn’t appear to be able to turn them into an instant winner, unless he can fill about 10 spots on their team. Whomever get’s him will have a future good, maybe even great quarterback on thier team in the years to come either way. Carolina may be best served by getting some linemen to protect, who ever is behind the center. It might not be fair to Cam either, to throw him to the wolves in Carolinas situation. Time will for sure tell.

Scam Newton,
Nowhere in my post was I saying that he was a sure-fire Hall of Famer, or a starter, or even a guaranteed moderate success. I was just asking for why people love to hate him so much. I’ve yet to hear any objective reasons that are based on anything factual. That was my point.
As for your inland oceanfront property – real estate is not where I’d like to spend my $8 fortune right now. Do you know everything your father ever did? Did he ever come home and say, “I lied to my boss today, son. Just thought you should know.” Or, maybe he knowingly played golf with 15 clubs and won the tournament. Did he come home afterwards and say, “Yes, son. I cheated. but I won, so who cares.”
Crazy thoughts, I know. But who knows everything their parents do? If a parent is having an affair, I’m guessing many of them may hide that from their children. That’s not typical dinner conversation for families. I would think that Cecil would have done everything in his power to hide his dealings from the rest of the family. THAT makes more sense than anything else.

No money changed hands or the SEC and NCAA investigators would have found it. As far as Cam knowing, (which, according to the latest NCAA statement matters not) At age 21 would you have known if your father talked about robbing a bank? I think not.
I cannot remember a player whose coaches and team-mates respected as much as Cam Newton was respected at Auburn. His work ethic and leadership are exceptional. You cannot fool those type of people, Cam is the real deal.
As far as an investigation “still going on”, that depends on your definition of “ongoing”. Investigative agencies almost never say “this case is closed”. If they do that, they can’t CYA if something unexpected turns up ten years later. What they do say is “no evidence at this time”. Then they put the papers in folders, put the folder in a box, put the box on a shelf and forget about it. The haters should do what the NCAA has done and forget about it.
The only Person Cecil Newton talked money with was Mississippi State street agent Kenny Rogers, who suggested a deal to Cecil so Rogers could get his 10% agent’s fee off the top. $20,000 would have helped Rogers with some of the bad checks he had floating at the time. It appears the MSU money boys knew better than to trust Rogers with $20, let alone 200,000, so the money was never made available.
When the NCAA declared Cam Newton “:Eligible Without Condition” on December 2nd, they were satisfied with the investigation’s results and moved on to other things. Mississippi State may yet have some problems out of this, but Cam Newton and Auburn won’t.

Haters hate,
I agree that parents do keep things from their children, but this is a completely set of circumstances with Newton. Affairs and a father lying to his boss typically don’t directly involve their children. It’s a little different when said child is the point of contention. Even if Cecil didn’t directly tell his son, you truly believe that Cam was oblivious to what was going on? Not to menion he is 20 yrs old, while young, he is not some 9 or 10 yr old kid that you can just pull the sheet over

The discussion was about Newton not Auburn. Not once was Auburn mentioned in anything I said. I could care less what Auburn does.
It was asked what legitimate reasons are out there to “not like” Cam Newton, and there in lied my responses. People don’t like Newton for the same reason people mock Reggie Bush. You get caught doing something unethical, people are going to “thumb” their nose at you. While this doesn’t directly involve Auburn, that’s the school where he played ball, thus Auburn gets the collateral damage.

The difference is that Cam Newton has been caught doing exactly nothing unethical. As far as anyone, NCAA and SEC investigators and the efforts of most unethical group of scribblers that have ever disgraced the journalistic profession can determine, not one scrap of evidence has indicated that Cam Newton did anything wrong or knew anything wrong was going on.
The best information available is that Kenny Rogers approached Cecil Newton about getting money for Cam’s signature to play at Mississippi State. How seriously and for how long Cecil entertained the idea is impossible to tell, but sooner or later he came to his senses. There is zero reason to suspect that Cam knew anything about it.

You are correct. Cheating in golf or hiding an affair are totally different issues than trying to score a mountain of cash for your child’s services. The latter is the most reprehensible on the list. I would submit that the level of evil of actions by the father is directly proportional to the lengths the father would go to to cover it up.
“I spilled the milk.” No hard in coming right out and admitting everything.
“I borrowed a quarter from your piggybank.” Easy to admit. But may hurt the child’s feelings.
“I gave your bike to the neighbors because you weren’t using it.” Definitely can be admitted, but will be a little bit more difficult.
“I told your girlfriend that you cheated on her.” Could possibly avoid this conversation in hopes that it never comes up.
“I slept with your girlfriend.” Many fathers would do whatever they could to cover this egregious error.
“I have been embezzling money from my company.” Of COURSE someone as morally bankrupt as this would lie to their family about it.
“I sold you to the highest bidder.” OF COURSE the father would do everything in his power to hide any shred of evidence of this proposed solicitation to anyone and everyone.

Where there’s smoke, there’s fire … right?
WHAT smoke? ALL you have is the allegations from three rogue boosters from Mississippi State. That’s barely more than a puff of smoke. That’s less than a single birthday candle.
I told AJ Green’s dad that I’d give him a pile of money and a Trans Am if he went to Georgia Tech. There!! LOOK at all that smoke! There HAS to be something to it. Where there’s smoke and sparks, there’s fire. Where’s the outrage? Where’s the commotion? Where is Fox Sports reporting on how awful AJ Green is?
Reality is – there is no smoke. There is likely no fire. The ONLY “evidence” of any impropriety by Cam Newton comes from three guys at Mississippi State. That’s it. They have zero evidence. They have zero proof. They have some doctored tapes and tons of emails and text messages that somehow were deleted from their phones when they suffered water damage. That’s so very convenient.
Oklahoma recruited him. Tennessee recruited him. Why have none of their angry boosters approached and said, “Yeah, he begged us for money too.”? Wouldn’t you think there would be someone, ANYone who would be able to corroborate this story by now? The investigation has been going on for well over a year. FBI, NCAA, SEC and virtually every sports writer in the western hemisphere has been digging into everything they can find to find ANY shred of evidence. And still all they have are three guys from Mississippi State who change their stories weekly but still say, “Yeah – he did it. We can’t prove it, but I cross my heart swear that he knew.”
And that is what so many people from rival schools are hanging their hopes, dreams and happiness on.

Where there’s smoke, there’s fire … right?
Usually yes.
Ive said it a million times. If Cam knew his father was shopping him that makes him ineligible right there. Doesn’t matter what school or if any money changed hands.
If you don’t believe Cam knew what his father, who he professes to be extremely close to, was doing you are either
1. An Auburn Homer
2. An idiot
Its that simple.

Every 5 years there is a player that comes along that is “once in a generation.” Give NFL fans (including myself) a few months off and they can make any team or any player sound relevant. Cam I don’t like you, but you are an incredible athlete. Yes his passing statistics were impressive in college, but there are always bound to be some passing windows when you can tuck and truck at any given time. There arent any drills out there that can simulate the stress on the mind and body like an NFL game. Taking Cam Newton #1 is obviously a gamble, but at far as quartabacks are concerned there is no such thing as a guaranteed thing out of college.

To Haters Hate,
The NCAA did find that Newton’s father pimped him out, however, the way the rule is written, if the kid is unaware of this, then no foul. Which is viewed a BS in everyone’s eye except for Auburn fans. Had this occurred at any other school, you would be riding the coattails of the rest of the haters.

Ok – hate the rule, don’t hate the guy that abided by it. If it’s asinine for the NCAA to declare him eligible, shouldn’t people hate the NCAA? Cam Newton – in this scenario DID NOTHING WRONG. Why hate him? Hate the rule, not the player.

Lets just be honest and keep it real. We all know why the haters are hating. The age old addeage. Black quarterbacks are not smart enough and run first. Lets keep it real. All a bunch of bull!!!!! “Oh he’s a good athelete, but not good enough to play quarterback.” That infuriates me that some of us still have this mentality from the early 1900’s. The kid is in fact a definite first rounder and guess what else?? He will be a first rounder at your precious position QUARTERBACK!!!!! Did I say that out loud??? Yes I did. I am a Bulldog fan, but I am also a Cam Newton fan. Do your thing young fella!!! I like good football period!!! Doesn’t matter the color.

30 touchdowns passing, 20 touchdowns running in the SEC, and Blaine Gabbert (16 tds, 9 ints) in a wack conference is somehow better and more suited for the NFL than Cam Newton? Please…With Newton haters, its all about the 1st round money, they hate to see him get paid. He will get paid on draft day more than most of his haters will in their lifetime…and that, along with the color of his skin makes them mad.

Cam Newton has already signed a million dollar a year contract with Under Armor. Many millions more will be his shortly after draft day.
According to reports from today’s pro day at Auburn, Cam wowed ‘em both on the field and in interviews. Completed 51 of 55 passes including 19 in a row at one time. He’s very intelligent and personable and a natural leader, a pro team’s dream.
I wonder if one of the teams drafting down in the order will trade up to get him? Carolina could probably be bought out of the first pick for two or three good players and a lower pick. Getting Cam Newton would be worth that to one of the stronger teams.

Okay, since I live rent free in the heads of Georgia fans, let me just say, WAR CAM EAGLE. Thankfully, I don’t have to actually hang out in their heads as it’s just a bitter place. Clinging so desperately to a 1980 national title? HA!
University of Tennessee, LSU, Florida, LSU, Florida, Alabama and Auburn all have BCS National Titles. We’re the part that makes the SEC great. You know, the side that wins bowl games.
So you claim Cam was paid to come to Auburn but a) offer no proof nor will you find any and b) you were still beaten on the field. And beaten badly. Hell, I beat Ben Jones so bad he had to team up with teammates to do chop blocks – which was probably coordinated from the sideline. AND I STILL beat him and his QB. Don’t hate me because I’m beautiful.
Anyways, in closing…
WAR CAM EAGLE… you bitter clingers.

Rod,
I am a UGA fan also but I do not see where anybody had anything to say that was racially motivated on this blog. I think most of the issues are supposedly about his character and his readiness to play quarterback in the NFL.
I think he will do great once he makes the transition from college to NFL, and with good coaching he will be very good most likely. I just do not believe he is ready to step in right now and start at the pro. level. Remember, Auburn ran an offense that isn’t used in the pros. and Auburn had that type of offense specifically to fully utilize Cam’s natural talents.

If you recall, I posted that half of the receptions is on the receiver. Those out routes and post patterns are as much timing as anything else. And when a QB is not used to the speed of his receivers, getting that timing down is as much luck as skill.
Newton was the best completion passer in Div-1A football last season. That says it all. Now, with receivers he is used to, he nails those same routes he had issues with at the combine. Like I also wrote then, this further undermines the credibility of the NFL combine.
Big time players like Newton can overcome the limitations of the combine. The real damage is done to other deserving players without the resume!
I’m not an Auburn fan nor alumnus. However, if the Carolina Panthers do not take Newton number one in the draft, I strongly believe they will regret it. And, I am a Panthers fan!

To all of you that say these comments aren’t racial, please tell me why everyone thinks Gabbert is a better prospect than Newton. Answer these questions about Blaine Gabbert.
Where his stats better?
Did his team win more games?
Did his team win the national championship?
Did he win the heisman?
Did he play in the toughest conference in America?
Did he go undefeated in the toughest conference in America?
Is he more athletic than Cam?
Did he run the same spread offense in college like Cam?
It is so funny when I hear media types and ignorant fans gush all over Blaine Gabbert. If he had Cam’s resume, he would be the odds on favorite to be the overall #1 pick. Conversely, if Cam had Gabbert’s pedestrian numbers (16tds & 9 ints), the draft experts would be trying to move him to receiver or tight end.
In addition, they keeping making a big deal about the “icon” and “entertainer” comments. Isn’t that what the NFL is looking for? Sure they are. That’s why the NFL has the billion dollar t.v. contract. The society loves to villify the black athlete. That’s why I keep rooting for M.V. The more they hate, the more we embrace! And to those that dismiss the racial componenet of some of these negative posts, “open your eyes”!!!

It is absolutely amazing that no matter what a brotha does he gets the hate. Give this man credit for taking a half xss team from the outhouse to the penthouse in one year. Like one poster said ” Blaine Gabbert’s numbers are 16 tds and 9 int last year.” If Cam had those numbers and was supposed to be the #1 pick I can only imagine the indignity that would cause. The only knock is that he has only done it for one year at the highest college level. Get a life and stop hating on this gifted person/athlete. Stop comparing him with JaMarcus Russell, there is only one similarity which is obvious. Do all QB’s with Ryan Leaf’s heritage get lumped in with him. Nuff said. I had the pleasure of coaching Cam in high school if you ever met him you would know this guy has a good heart and great work ethic. Nobody in this world is without fault. So if you ever cheated on a test, lied, or broke some rules people should label you as such. Kids make mistakes we all do but it doesnt define who you are. What defines who you are is what you do after the mistakes. He constantly says in his interviews hes trying to become a bettter person one day at a time. Or maybe its just becasue he went to Westlake like PACMAN!!!!!!! LOL

The cheating allegations were proven to be lies less than 24 hours after they were posted. Many on here know this but like Thayer Evans they can’t stand to see someone else be successful so the losers try to pull the winner down to their level. Why isn’t Mr. Blank-check showing his face at the CBA meetings and getting an agreement that both the owners and players can be somewhat happy with? Mr. Blank likes to intermingle with the players on the side lines during games, well come on MR. BLANK, pull both sides to the table at your favorite eating place like you do when you go after free agents by wining and dining them to sign. Do the same thing here and OWNER-UP and make a deal for both sides that is acceptable and half-way fair! I do believe that the owners should get their fair share plus++ by putting up their money for the players, share the pie and let’s have NFL Football next year! Oh Yea, MR.
