CBS Atlanta will serve as the Falcons’ official preseason television partner, the team announced on Monday.

Also, Lincoln Financial Media, owner of STAR 94 FM and Sports Radio 790 The Zone, was named as the club’s official radio broadcast partner.

WXIA Channel 11 and DAVE.FM were the previous television and radio partners for the Falcons.

CBS Atlanta will also broadcast weekly pre-game and post-game shows during the regular season.

In addition, CBS Atlanta will air quarterly specials.

“Ratings for the NFL are the highest in television history,” said  Kirk Black, CBS Atlanta’s general manager in a statement.

Falcons broadcasters Wes Durham (play-by-play) and former Falcons quarterback Dave Archer (color analyst) calling all of the Falcons action on both radio stations.

‘We are thrilled to be partners with the pre-eminent sports franchise in Atlanta,” said Andrew Saltzman, general m of Sports Radio 790 the Zone. “Both Star 94 and Sports Radio 790 the Zone have always been part of the fabric of Atlanta and with the passion for the Falcons at an all-time high right now, we are very excited about our future together.”

However, it is not clear how many preseason games the Falcons will have in the future. The NFL and the player’s union are in negotiations for a new collective bargaining agreement. The league is proposing a new schedule that would include 18 regular-season games and two exhibition games.

“We are pleased with both of the new media partners that emerged from our process,” said Falcons president Rich McKay in a statement. “Lincoln Financial Media and CBS Atlanta are solid media companies.”

CBS Atlanta, which shut down it’s sports department in April of 2010, seems a strange partner for the Falcons.

The station virtually runs no sports Monday through Thursday and normally have just spot coverage over the weekend. They do have a Saturday sports evening show featuring radio personalities from 790 The Zone.

Here’s some more background on the deal in Rodney Ho’s Radio & TV Talk blog.

As longs Shapiro has no involvement in the gameday broadcast it’ll be fine. But I’m sure he’ll insert is annoying personality in there somehow.

Will 94.1 FM simulcast the games with 790? As you know, the AM signal is extremely weak in north Atlanta and can’t be heard worth a (Chris Dimino) crap after sunset. Please tell me the Falcons noticed that also.

chc4, you KNOW Shapiro’s ego HAS TO BE involved in the broadcasts! He’s intertwined with Saltzman like it or not.

For those of you who are fortunate enough to have an HD-Radio receiver built into your current car or home radios, the 790 signal is simulcast & embedded in the STAR94 HD/FM signal as HD3.

94.1 HD1 = STAR94,

94.1 HD2 = STAR94 2,

94.1 HD3 = 790 The Zone

Unfortunately, I have to agree that any pre-game, post-game or in-game broadcast involving Steak Shapiro in any way, shape or form will be virtually unlistenable, be it on AM, FM or HD.

…After all these years, I still laugh thinking about Dave Archer and how he thought he was a ‘real’ NFL quarterback…I remember when Chris Miller was drafted in the first round, good ol’ Dave came out in the media blustering that he didn’t think QB was a team-priority.

Trust me, Dave, after trying to watch you play, it was the biggest need of the team during ‘your’ era…

As for the egomaniacs at The Zone, I don’t believe they think Atlanta sports existed prior to them….Still laughing at the allegedly knowledgeable Chris Dimino stating that the number-one seed in the conference was “uncharted territory” as related to the 2010 Falcons….Check 1980, cha-cha…

The only potential silver-lining here is that finally the man who single-handedly murders the English-language and the spoken-word–Mr. Jeff Van Note–may finally be put to pasture. The man who had the nerve to complain about the ‘57 Chevy given to him by the Smith family upon his retirement.

“Class” act, there, Jeff…Whenever I hear his ignorant voice, I turn the station….

It doesn’t matter about 790. If you live further than 5 miles from the dome, you won’t be able to listen anyway unless they put more squirrels on the treadmill to increase power.

My hair dryer has more wattage than 790 so it looks like no listening to the Falcons. Arthur Blank, Salsa and Steakie attend the same synagogue attend the same synagogue so mystery unraveled and 790 guys do the CBS sports which is the worst. Should have gone with 680 at least we could hear the games more than 3 miles from the dome

Guess I can pick up the pre-game show once I get inside the perimeter on my way to the Dome and then I’ll listen to the post-game show until I get to Delk Rd. on my way back to Marietta. I like 790 and 680, but I find myself listening to 680 more since I can actually pick up the signal out in the burbs. GO FALCONS!!!

790 is the worst sports talk station I have ever heard. Steak, Dimino, and Nick are TERRIBLE. As is Beau Bock. He must be 90 by now. But by far the worst show are the “Two Live Thugs.” Do they know they can hardly speak English? They call people “dogs and poodles?” Really? Gotta love the lack of education. Funny also how they never talk about mostly white sports like baseball or hockey. Hmmmm.

For Blank it is all about the money! Sure he loves to talk about the fan’s game day experience–at the fan’s expense, of course!

790 The Zone compare to 680 the Fan is like comparing a Ponderosa Steak House to CHOPS in Buckhead. The 680 owners, directors and producers wouldn’t for a second have the “Stupid Stews” on air!

Blank again picks making more money over more quality; he’s a lucky cookie that Bernie Marcus, the Home Depot CEO, thought leader and innovator was theire to order his CFO, Blank, how to spend money wisely.

Steakie is thanking his lucky stars that mishbucha (yiddish word for family) Arthur Blank saved his ass….no Falcons deal for 790 and CBS Atlanta, and the Zone would’ve been done in no time. Now we”re stuck with the loudmouth and his fellow baldies for at least 5 more years.

Another Shapiro Hater

March 7th, 2011
9:11 pm

When I was younger, more naive and just out of college, I was a fan of 790 and went to a live 790 The Zone broadcast Steak & Company were doing in Sandy Springs.

After meeting Steak Shapiro in person at that broadcast, I can say without reservation I have never met a bigger jerk and more disingenuous, condescending, arrogant blowhard in my entire life (myself included).

When I got back to my car in the parking lot after being talked down to by that piece of garbage, I immediately took 790 off my radio presets and haven’t listened a single minute of that station since.

It is a shame that slime like Shapiro might have ANYTHING to do with broadcasting our beloved Falcons.

@StatesBur:…To be honest, I don’t know why they chose one media outlet over another, and neither do you. That being said, I assume that it was a BUSINESS decision as most decisions related to BUSINESS are. Why are most companies in Atlanta locating outside of the perimeter when most of the people who need jobs live within the city? I could say that it’s the “white people” getting together with their buddies to exclude Blacks. But, once again, it’s probably just a business decision.
