Any Mock Draft done before the NFL scouting combine is just mere guess work. It’s just some basement hack throwing darts at a board.
Loading ...After speaking with the Falcons and other teams, listening to more than 200 player interviews and riding around Indianapolis with Jerry Jones on the Dallas Cowboys’ bus, some things have come into focus.

My man, Allen Bailey from Miami, will not be selected by the Falcons with the 27th pick. While he did meet with the team, he’s clearly a second-rounder.
The move not to re-sign Brian Finneran and coach Mike Smith’s comments about the young wide receivers – Harry Douglas, Kerry Meier and Eric Weems – getting a chance to step up, means you can forget about Boise State’s Titus Young or Maryland’s Torrey Smith in the first round. However, Pat Kirwan, of NFL.Com and Sirius NFL Radio, has the Falcons selecting Pittsburgh wide receiver Jonathan Baldwin in the first round.
The Falcons are not picking a quarterback, safety, running back or tight end in the first round. You can eliminate those positions.
They are really picky about their cornerbacks and believe that Christopher Owens will develop into a ball player.
So, that leaves them with a value pick and trying to balance the need for a pass rushing defensive end against the possibility of losing Pro Bowl right tackle Tyson Clabo. Or, they could elect to fortify their linebacker corps.
“The defensive line, in general is phenomenal,” NFL Network draft analyst Mike Mayock said. “I’ve got nine defensive ends with first-round grades.”

This is not considered a very good draft for offensive tackles. But the Falcons may have a shot at Wisconsin’s Gabe Carimi or Mississippi State’s Derek Sherrod, who measured in at 6-foot-5 and weighed 321 pounds.
“Carimi is as solid as it comes,” Mayock said. “He’s a guy that you plug in at right tackle on day one and he’s a starter for the next 10 years. I think Derek Sherrod from Mississippi State is a gifted left tackle.”
But under this 2.0 scenario, I have the Falcons landing the best pass rushing prospect in the draft, North Carolina defensive end Robert Quinn, a 6-4, 265-pound terror. He’s going to slip because of his suspension. The NCAA determined that he received $5,642 in “improper” benefits. He was suspended for last season.
But those problems are minor when stacked up against his talent. He’ll have to get a character clearance from the Falcons’ character review department. He’ll also need a medical clearance. He had brain surgery in high school.
“I’m just going to move on from the past and let people make their judgments on that,” Quinn said. “I made a selfish mistake and I paid –- me, my team, my family and coaches paid a price for it. I truly apologized for it.

“When I took the jewelry, it was from a jeweler. In the back of my mind, it wasn’t an agent, so I was thinking it wasn’t as bad or wasn’t bad at all. But coming all the way through, actually it was.”
Draft this kid and give him some cash so he can buy his own jewelry. Show him a picture of Drew Brees and Josh Freeman and let him go to work.
Quinn might just be worth the risk. It’s not like he committed one of the B.A.R.R.K. crimes (Burglary, Arson, Robbery, Rape or Kidnapping.)
“He’s as good of a natural pass rusher as I’ve ever seen,” Mayock said. “Now, he’s 20 years old. . . Some of the 3-4 teams might want to see him stand up. He’s unbelievable coming off the edge.”
Falcons general manager Thomas Dimitroff stated to the 715 gathered members of the media that the Falcons will always consider character. He stated that team has been tempted, but has passed on some “challenging souls.” But they might just have to take the football player if Quinn drops to their spot.

5. Arizona: Blaine Gabbert, QB, Missouri: He didn’t throw at the combine and is Mayock’s top quarterback in the draft.

6. Cleveland: Patrick Peterson, CB, LSU: Some consider Peterson to be the top talent in the draft.
7. San Francisco: Von Miller, LB, Texas A&M: He’s just too good for the 49ers to pass up.
8. Tennessee: J.J. Watt, DE, Wisconsin: A versatile talent. He was all cranky when I asked him in the hallway of Lucas Oil Stadium, if he’d interviewed with the Falcons. Clearly, teams were telling some of the prospects not to reveal their interviews.
9. Dallas: Cameron Jordan, DE, California: He will work out just fine in the Cowboys’ 3-4 defense.
10. Washington: Julio Jones, WR, Alabama: The Redskins need an offensive weapon like Jones.
11. Houston: Prince Amukamara, CB, Nebraska: The Fresh Prince of Nebraska lands in Texas. Sounds like a good television series.
12. Minnesota: Ryan Mallett, QB, Arkansas: I came away impressed with his spunk after he didn’t back down from the pack of media wolves questioning him about his alleged recreational drug use. He can throw the ball 80 yards.
13. Detroit: Anthony Castonzo, OT, Boston College: He’s considered the most pro-ready tackle, while Southern California’s Tyron Smith might be the most talented.
14. St. Louis: Mark Ingram, RB, Alabama: They get a replacement for Steven Jackson.
15. Miami: Tyron Smith, OT, Southern California: He drew raves from Mayock at the combine.
16. Jacksonville: Adrian Clayborn, DE, Iowa: His production dropped last season. “Just double-teams and triple-teams and tight ends chipping me and running backs chipping me,” Clayborn said. “There was a lot of different

17. New England: Nate Solder, OT, Colorado: He’s 6-foot-8, 319 pounds and has an 81-inch arm span. “It’s a big group of us and that will sort itself out in time,” Solder said. “I think I’m more athletic than they are. I can move a little better in space.”
18. San Diego: Akeem Ayers, OLB, UCLA: The Chargers are looking for help on defense.
19. New York Giants: Aldon Smith, DE/OLB, Missouri: Is a force coming off the edge. Some 3-4 teams like him as a outside linebacker.
20. Tampa Bay, Cam Heyward, DE, Ohio State: His elbow injury kept him from doing the bench press. He likely won’t lift at Ohio State’s Pro Day.
21. Kansas City: Gabe Carimi, OT, Wisconsin: He’s been compared to former Badger tackle Joe Thomas.

22. Indianapolis: Derek Sherrod, OT, Mississippi State: He could be a good left tackle for years to come. “I feel like I can move pretty good at any weight,” Sherrod said.
23. Philadelphia: Jimmy Smith, CB, Colorado: Some consider him the second best corner in the draft behind Peterson.
24. New Orleans: Ryan Kerrigan, DE, Purdue: “We had a great strength program at Purdue and that’s helped me become the player I am,” Kerrigan said.
25. Seattle: Cam Newton, QB, Auburn: This could be the perfect spot for Newton. He could learn how to read defenses from Matt Hasselbeck and won’t have to worry about being an “entertainer” or “icon” right away.
26. Baltimore: Brandon Harris, CB, Miami: He was a three-year starter for the Hurricanes. He gave up one touchdown last season and that was in the bowl game.
27. Atlanta: Robert Quinn, DE, North Carolina: The Falcons can’t resist the talent. They know about his issues at North Carolina, but figure that the good guys in the locker room can show Quinn the path to the straight and narrow.

28. New England: Muhammad Wilkerson, DT, Temple: He’s in that second group of defensive tackles behind Fairley and Dareus. He’s massive at 6-5, 305.
29. Chicago: Mike Pouncey, C/G, Florida: The Bears try to get some protection for quarterback Jay Cutler.
30. New York Jets: Justin Houston, OLB, Georgia: “Justin Houston from Georgia isn’t as consistent as I would like to see,” Mayock said. “But he’s another guy that people are looking at.”
31. Pittsburgh: Aaron Williams, CB, Texas: The Steelers get some help for their secondary.
32. Green Bay: Mikel Leshoure, RB, Illinois: James Starks played well down the stretch and Ryan Grant is expected back, however, Leshoure is too intriguing to pass on.

Talk about a pie in the sky dream, Quinn will be long gone by then. Maybe Kerrigan falls to 27th to the falcons. I hope CB Brandon Harris falls to the falcons, Owens should have been released with his high school plays in the playoff game against Green Bay–he froze up and couldn’t play! Me personally, i would draft Titus Young, the fast and elusive play maker that Douglas will never be! Douglas drops to many easy catches last year.

Would love to get Quinn but I doubt he falls. I am also not convinced that Smith’s statements mean the Falcons won’t take a WR if there is a big run on DEs.

DLed, Like the idea of the falcons filter being relaxed a bit. But Smith’s comments about the receivers was answering a question about the number 2 receiver and smith didn’t mention Jenkins. I think that could mean the falcons are going to replace Jenks in the draft.

It has been proven that you can get fantastic value at the CB position late in the first round. Dimitroff needs to invest in the best CB on the board at #27. Stop pinning your hopes on Christopher Owens. What if Grimes or Robinson has to miss extended time due to injury. We would be in big trouble. Heck, it was catastrophic in the playoffs when we lost B. Williams. You can never have enough good CBs. Also, we better draft a receiver early as well. I hope and pray Randall Cobb is there in the second round.

I’m not sure I’m ready to believe Robert Quinn is that good. He had basically one elite year, and then he got a coach fired, and several excellent players who weren’t even on his team suspended…not to mention essentially ruining a season for his school essentially because he’s an idiot and he tweeted all this stuff he was doing.
I want no part of Robert Quinn early, because I have no reason to believe he’s going to put for effort at all once he gets paid.
I think he’s got immense talent, but so do a lot of guys.
Robert Quinn is just as likely to destroy the team he’s on as the other team. He’s proven that.

In the second or third round. Love me some Robert Quinn. I like a lot of the players on that Carolina defense. I just think there are going to be some players available at 27 that don’t have the same questions.
I definately wouldn’t mind having Quinn on the Falcons if that’s what happens. I do question whether or not he wants to be a great player and not just a well paid player though.

Quinn has the talent to be a dominant DE but does he have the intangibles that are required to be truly great? So far, it doesn’t look that way. So far he looks like just the next in a long line of dumbasses with talent. I agree that pressuring the QB is still our biggest need but very few of the elite pass rushers should be available at 27, including Quinn. QB,OLT, and DT are the highest value picks and if an elite LT or DT falls to us the smart money says take them even if they aren’t our most obvious need. I know we have other needs and none of us can agree on what’s the biggest but games are won and lost in the trenches. Our Dline appears set but we still aren’t getting enough penetration/pressures up the middle. That MAY improve with Jerry’s health but I believe we still need another guy up front. Our needs on the O-line are more apparent. Boudreau has gotten a lot out of the current no-name crew but we need to give him some better pieces to plug in. We have some young back-ups, but they’re all lower round guys. We had to reach for Baker due to the extremity of our need for a new LT, but now we have the luxury of finding a true LT with Baker and Svitek holding down the fort in the meantime. Solder may not have arms like an aeroplane but man, does he have the long arms and the big fast frame that Boudreau could sculpt into an LT to protect Ryan for a long time. We need playmakers at the “skill” positions but let’s not forget to build from the inside out….

@ Falconidae, I agree completely with your assessment. Mike Smith not only didn’t mention Jenkins when he called out all the other receivers, he said one of their primary goals was to “Win the Explosive Plays”. He was talking about stretching the field and you do that with a fast receiver. He went on to say about the defensive line that there were a number of guys that were progressing very well.

Q: What are the keys to improving the offense?
A: Creating the explosive play is an area where we have to improve. [Explosive plays are defined as ones that gain 20 yards or more.] Really, creating those explosive plays are very similar to the turnover ratio. If you are giving up a lot of explosive plays, it doesn’t really matter how many that you get. You want to win the explosive [play] ratio just like you do the turnover ratio.
Q: Offensively, will we see a more aggressive and creative approach to creating more explosive plays?
A: We’re going to continue to evaluate that all the way through the offseason. I think it’s a real obvious [area]. Sometimes statistics can be deceiving. Sometimes they can be very telling. We know that we have to win the explosive-play ratio. We definitely know that. I think that’s one of the four or five factors that will determine the outcome of most games.
Q: What’s your receiver situation going forward? A lot of people contend that you need a number-two receiver.
A: It’s a very solid receiving corps, of course led by Roddy White. I think there will be a jump in production from Harry Douglas because it’s going to be his second year recovering from his knee surgery. Even though Harry was ready to go when the season started, he wasn’t 100 percent.
As the season progressed, he got better and better. I think it was evident in the Carolina game [in Charlotte on Dec. 12] when he caught the deep ball. Harry will be an integral part of what we want to do.
We will get Kerry Meier back. We were very impressed with him during the preseason. We felt that he was going to be a guy who could contribute not only on offense, but on special teams as well. He’s ahead of schedule as well in terms of his rehabilitation.
Eric Weems was a playmaker on special teams. He did not have a whole lot of opportunities on offense, but he is a guy who can be more involved in the offense.

Q: Some folks on the blogs are starting to contend that Peria Jerry is a bust. What’s his future?
A: As the season progressed, he became more productive. He was recovering from his knee just like [wide receiver] Harry Douglas. Even though guys have come back in that first year, they are not 100 percent until their second season.
We saw progress from Peria throughout the season. Peria was used basically as more of a situational player.
We feel that he’ll continue to progress.
Q: Can he still be a disruptive force at defensive tackle?
A: Of course. There is no doubt. You saw that at the end of the season where he was penetrating and getting into the backfield and creating tackles for losses.
But sometimes there are things that don’t show up in the stat book. Like, if he’s being doubled-teamed or if he’s forcing the ball to the bubble [an open area], where a guy has an opportunity to get off the block and go make the play.
SO, don’t be surprised if the Falcon do select a wide receiver with that first pick. As you see, Smith didn’t even mention Jenkins when talking about the receivers and he knows Douglas is the next best receiver on the roster and he’s not a number 2, he’s best used in the slot. Kerry Meier’s is going to replace Finneran as a possession receiver in 4 receiver sets. So, unless they sign a free agent, receiver is the most pressing need.

D Led….(all this is contingent upon them deciding not to shoot the golden goose) I think we should draft Cam Heyward. My only drawback is injury as as good as TD’s been…there have been some injured players we’ve drafted that still have a couple question marks. I’d like to see us get someone who can hit the ground running and is “durable” ( i know thats such a relative word in such a sport as this.)

Told you during that 1.0 mock that Bailey would never go to the Falcons with that 1st pick (I don’t think they’d pick him at all). I said he’d look like Tarzan at the combine but he plays like Jane.

Yeah, if Quinn is there we have to take him. If not, I like Justin Houston or one of the CB’s. Then address DE in 3rd Rd and again whenever free agency comes around.
Rd 2-Randall Cobb and nobody else. Trade up if you have to.

Why does everyone want a DE in the draft? the last thing i want is having to deal with all this “hell develop into a solid player” stuff when truth be told the falcons have their best shot right now. Ive said it before and ill say it again. the falcons should go after a WR/DE in free agency and then use those draft picks to ad depth. Drafting a LB/DB in the first round really increases the depth and prepares for the future. Besides, chances are a WR/DE wouldn’t get the starting nod on day one.

As long as it is NOT POUNCEY! The Packers made it clear that the Falcons need defense. The offense has Pro-Bowlers galore.
And NO PROJECTS. The Falcons have many of the pieces in place but it won’t last. Abraham and Gonzalez could be gone after 2011. The time is NOW.

You know D-Led when I saw the title, BEFORE READIN THE ARTICLE, I was going into it like how can D-led justify this. But your mock draft does show a way how he could slip. Theres a lot of 1st round talented players who will slip in the draft. I still think its a low chance Quinn slips to us but if he were. Man would that be somethin. “means you can forget about Boise State’s Titus Young or Maryland’s Torrey Smith in the first round.
And Im glad you shut up the falcon fans about drafting a WR in the 1st round. It gets annoying to keep seeing falcons scream for a WR in the 1st round. I still think we should take pouncey though. NEED TO REBUILD THAT O-LINE before its too late.

TommyP — I’m throwing the darts in the kitchen today! You were right. I had to meet the kid. Didn’t come away with the impression that he could be a quick study and play right away. If I wasn’t impressed, I know the Falcons weren’t either. Kudos to you!
Falcons relax — Somebody drops every year, why not Quinn. Man, he really did look good coming off the edge at the combine. If he’s slipping maybe they go up and get him. I don’t see the WR pick, but Baldwin is someone to keep an eye on. All Ryan talked about at the Pro Bowl was about big receivers like Calvin Johnson and Larry Fitz.

DOL – speaking of the draft-
I see where the falcons get an additional 7th for the trade with NE for the OTHER Quinn
, But the mock sites are all over the place on what (if any) pick the Falcons get from Detroit to complete the trade for our CB last year.
Do they get Detroit’s 6th as Chris Houston played in so many games with so many snaps? I see that referred to often. Of is it their 7th, giving the Falcons 3 7th rounders? Or ????.

As for the draft, I just don’t see Quinn as an upgrade over Biermann. He is even lighter, and likely wouldn’t contribute much if he could pass thru the Falcons Filter.
What do you think about Murray or Vereen to replace Norwood?

As of today,I’m on the (UGA OLB/DE) Justin Houston bandwagon. Houston had a great combine. It is reported that he ran a 4.68 forty. Houston has the (physical) measurables to go along with the production on the field.
I’m becoming more and more convinced that the Falcons will draft a edge pass rusher (DE) in the 1st round. There are just too many in this draft to pass on. And I think they will go for a pass catching change of pace (speed) running back in the 2nd/3rd round. I wouldn’t mind the ‘Birds drafting a “jack-of-all-trades” player like Kentucky’s Randall Cobb.

Don’t look for Jenkins to be going anywhere…if you’re looking for speed @ the reciever position..then it will come from the “slot” and Douglas…Meier is quick and will be good coming across the middle like whats his name (who came off knee surgery) in New England…all the attention should be forcus on the DE position…..with that said “SEE YOU ON THE HILL”

It would be nice if Quinn fell, but based on everything I’m seeing on NFL network, there’s no way he falls to us. I believe that unless someone like Quinn or another guy projected much higher falls in our lap, we go w/ Jonathan Baldwin or if he’s snatched away, then Torrey Smith. I was really impressed w/ Baldwin at the combine, b4 I had Smith ahead of him, but he’ll be a beast and I think he’ll make a difference from the jump. Glad to see we protected ourselves w/ Grimes tender too. I really hope the CBA crap gets taken care of, Mr. Schultz article about the “pigs” was right on in my opinion, I’m glad the owners are getting called out and that they lost that 4 billion from TV money they tried to steal. Now maybe they’ll have to bargain and let’s play ball!

I appreciate your column but you know that’s wishful thinking. No way he falls this low unless there’s other “stuff” apart from what we know already. I am also not sure he will pass the “character” test that you know our braintrust is big on.

I too am not sold on Baldwin although he would be a good replacement for Finn as far as measurables go. Hopefully for his sake it’s only a maturity issue and he grows out of it quickly. I think the WR issue depends on how much our top brass thinks Meir and HD have improved physically. Someone posted a quote earlier from MS that they have made significant progress. Assuming that is so and not just something said to distract the competition, then we have to go defense at #27.
Furthermore with the depth in this draft at DE & DT and also with our team drafting for depth, we may be able to take the best defender available with an emphasis on explosiveness. At this point I am hoping we can get Ryan Kerrigan. High motor and football IQ. Relentless and versatile. Maybe suspect in coverage but will be consistent and good vs. the run.

In addition, assuming the Panthers decide that Clausen is not their QB of the future, arguably eight out of the first twelve teams need a quarterback.
Vince Young, Kevin Kolb, Donovan McNabb, Carson Palmer, and Blaine Gabbert are the players that will largely determine the first round of the draft. For instance, if Carolina drafts Gabbert, or any of the eight teams trades and/or signs one of the other QB’s above, the entire first round changes dramatically.

Hopefully there will be a new CBA soon so the Falcons can address their pass rush needs in free agency before the draft because trying to replace three OL starters at the same time is HUGE… and all bets are off next season if the Falcons can’t run the ball and keep Ryan upright and healthy.

Johnson’s being inactive for every game would be understandable if he were a late round pick, but a third rounder draftee’s getting zero playing time is disconcerting especially considering the Falcons might have to replace three starters on the O-line.

I like the idea of taking Jonathan Baldwin in the first. This kid can play, if he keeps his head in the game. Yup I added a caveat. Then, in the second I think we can good a pretty good DB. But, the best pick could go in the third or fourth with Atlanta landing Greg Romeous. You want to look at value and someone that is going to slide in the draft? Well, it is Greg Romeous. He lost his Mother and had two injuries his last season, which caused his stock to drop but he is a gamer! He is my pick for steal of the draft.

D-Led Exactly. Dez Bryant was top 5 pick and slipped. Quinn has character issues and didn’t even play last year. So he could slip like Bryant did and we could trade up like the cowboys did. No one saw Bryant slipping that low in the 1st round but it happened. You made a great point.
AND THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU!!! Thats what I’ve been trying to tell Falcons fans all the time about how Ryan said Calvin Johnson was his favorite WR at the pro bowl. IS THAT A COINCIDENCE??? I think not, it means Ryan would love to play with him. Thats one of the advantages at the pro bowl. Players get to lobby for organizations. Whole coaching staff, Most players there, and our starting QB single outs Calvin Johnson as his favorite player he worked with?? You kiddin me. Ryan wants Megatron and he is a free agent next year.
Thing is that franchise tag which is why TD and SMitty must continue to stay on task of drafting “NEEDS” and not “WANTS” so if the lions place a 1st and 3rd rounder on Johnson. It won’t hurt us. And Im not thinking this way just because of fantasy. Johnson is a GA boy just like Dunta. Johnson has publicy stated he won’t get used to losing like barry sanders did. In other words he won’t stay in Detriot if they keep losing. Why could he not come and play for the QB, who called you out as his favorite WR? lol!

@ This Gets Old I agree. Saints have Ellis and just sign SHaun Rodgers. Bucs have McCoy and Price and will go for a stud DE and then the cats have Charles Johnson who had 8 sacks last year and delivered and have a shot at the “next” peppers possibly. I totally agre. THE TIME IS NOW to set up the o-line for the future. This o-line has taken us as far as its going to go.

The Falcons would really need to do their homework on Quinn if he should drop to 27 (or even into the 20s)……that would mean that a lot of good football teams and player personnel people had looked at this guy with great skills/potential and passed him up for less talented people. A pass-rushing DE is one of the toughest thing to find in football, and very few teams would pass on him if they didn’t have some very serious reservations,
Should the Falcons zone in on a DE, the one thing I want to see is a guy with a nasty, aggressive, gotta-get-the QB attitude….we drafted a great specimen in J. Anderson, but in 3 years I’ve yet to see that fire that the great ones have to get the sack…….

SECTION ONE
ROUND ONE:
Primary Selection: DE/OLB Aldon Smith, University of Missouri.
Yes, for the THIRD year in a row, I am drinking of the MIZZOU Kool-aid to upgrade the Falcons’ defense. The Falcons pass rush is pathetic outside of perennial Pro Bowler, John Abraham. Abe, who just completed his 11th NFL season, lead the team with 13 sacks. Meanwhile, ALL other defensive ends on the Falcons roster combined for SIX. You heard me right….SIX!! That has got to change in a division where we face the talented Drew Brees, the emerging Josh Freeman, and a Kitten team that SHOULD take QB Blaine Gabbert with its first round selection. Smith is a talented edge rusher. He is skilled at deflecting passes at the line of scrimmage and uses his hands to force turnovers inside. He has the speed to get to the quarterback and the strength to make plays once there. His speed gives him great range to cover the field from sideline to sideline OR drop back in coverage. Additionally, he possesses a great work ethic and is a quality leader.
Alternate Selection: WR Leonard Hankerson, University of Miami.
The Falcons are in DESPERATE need of a legitimate #2 wide receiver. In Hankerson, the Falcons, in my opinion get a clone of Roddy White in EVERY way. I will take it even further…we would be drafting the second coming of Hall of Famer WR Michael Irvin. Hankerson can do it all. He has the speed to threaten deep, the quality hands and mindset to go over the middle, and the blocking skills in the run game. He works well with coaching and is a quality student of the game. Having a mentor like Chris Carter (who should be in the Hall of Fame) in your corner is a damned good thing as well.

ROUND TWO:
Primary Selection: WR Randall Cobb, University of Kentucky.
With this selection, I give offensive coordinator Mike Mularkey one of two KEY elements his offense has been missing, a legitimate slot receiver. Cobb is an immensely talented wide receiver. He has great speed, outstanding hands, runs great routes, and offers the SIGNIFICANT skills needed to IMMEDIATELY upgrade the intermediate passing game. Matt Ryan will absolutely LOVE this selection for it augments both the skill set of Ryan and the play calling skills of Mad Mike. Cobb is fearless, making the key catching over the middle, and UNDERSTANDS the importance of yards after catch. He adds the additional dimensions of being able to return kicks and punts as well. I see a lot of Kitten’s star, Steve Smith in his game. And God knows…Smith has been a pain in our butts for years so why not pass the pain to the rest of the league f we can.
Alternate Selection: TE Virgil Green, University of Nevada.
Like John Abraham at defensive end, the clock is ticking on Tony Gonzalez at tight end. Green is a legitimate force at the position and could only benefit in the positive by working with and under Gonzo for a year. His size, fine ball skills, and awareness in the red zone will give Mad Mike another critical element in exploiting totally his “Inspect Gadget” image. Once again, the intermediate passing game, MR2’s true strength, becomes lethal with the addition of a quality #2 receiver, a TRUE slot presence, and a crafty yet talented tight end.
ROUND THREE:
Primary Selection: LB Mason Foster, University of Washington.
Alternate Selection: LB Greg Jones, Michigan State University.
In the words of Mike Singletary, I want winners!! And in selecting either of these two linebackers, we will add an additional element to our defense. First, they both remind me of Falcon great Jesse Tuggle. Each are very reliable tacklers, are more than adequate in pass defense, and offer the Falcons SIGNIFICANT upgrades in blitz capability. Both also pursue well and finish plays. They are leaders in the locker room and on the field AND in the community. Mason Foster and/or Greg Jones play the game the way that it was meant to be played; with passion, intensity, and to the last whistle. We need that on defense.

Primary Selection: RB Shane Vereen – University of California.
Alternate Selection: RB Jordan Todman, University of Connecticut.
Both of these gentlemen are excellent change of pace backs with good hands out of the backfield and the ability to run both inside and outside. They have good size and have the frames to grow. They would provide depth and could step in early in third down situations while re-fining their overall skills. Both represent TREMENDOUS value at this point in the draft.
ROUND FIVE: OT Joseph Barksdale – Louisiana State University. Physically talented offensive tackle but there have been are some questions about his work ethic (he seems to rely on getting by his physical gifts). The tools are there and if Coach Boudreau can get him to “man up”, he is a steal here and a legit left or right tackle down the road.
ROUND SIX: FS JaiQuawn Jarrett, Temple University. Depth pick here. Fine skills and a force in the secondary as well as on special teams. Has the skill set to push DeCoud and keep the ego of that young man (DeCoud) in check.
ROUND SEVEN (#1): WR Ricardo Lockette – Fort Valley State. You can’t teach speed and this kid has it. Two years on the practice squad to learn and refine his receiving skills under coach Robiskie and we have a potential star.
ROUND SEVEN (#2): CB Darrin Walls, University of Notre Dame. Nice size (6’, 190). Depth pick here. He has played both cornerback positions and offers special team skills as well. Any cornerback that can hold Megatron, aka Calvin Johnson, to two catches in a half of play is DEFINITELY worth a look at least.

DOL, I hated when you said Allen Bailey and knew he wouldn’t be the pick, now I love hearing Robert Quinn but I know he won’t be the pick unless we trade up to get him, which I don’t see us doing. I think Quinn is long gone by 27, but I pray you are right on this one, even though I don’t think you are.

I can’t believe that this is even considered a legitimate draft. Pat Yasinskas, the NFC South blogger for espn had this as headline as I was reviewing his blog and when I saw the headline I nearly fell out of my chair. Where do I start? First, you top two picks are guys who are considered to be failing a little on draft boards(Bowers, Fairley) because they didn’t measure up to expectations at the combine and are consider risky since they both had only one season of super productivity. Second, Marcel Dareus, Patrick Peterson, Von Miller, Julio Jones all had very good combines and seems to be moving up the boards, with Peterson projected at 2nd overall, Miller, going 5th overall, Dareus is seen as a safer pick then Fairley at this time. Jones, wont fall past 6th with Cleveland, have you seen there receiving core? Thrid, Arizona coach Ken Wisenhunt is not going to go through another season with a rookie QB, when his job is on the line, so Gabbert is a non starter. Lastly, Robert Quinn to the Falcons? Are you serious? There is no way he would get past, San Francisco, Houston, Minnesota, Detroit, Jacksonville, and TAMPA BAY! Let me tell you, If you think the BUCS, will pass Robert Quinn for Cam Heyward, you are deluding yourself. I must admit that there is virtually no chance of him lasting to us, let alone Atlanta. We may have to trade down if there are no DE’s available with that value at 20th overall. Hopefully, Kerrigan is there for us, Heyward and Allen Bailey likely will be there for you guys. And if you take Bailey, he will make Jamaal Anderson look like an overachiever. You would be better off waiting till the 2nd round for Bailey, and taking replacement for T Gonzalez like Kyle Rudolph.
