The Falcons signed offensive tackle Will Svitek and punter Ken Parrish today.

Svitek, 6-foot-6, 308 pounds, played in all 17 games last season  as a reserve offensive lineman.

He was originally drafted by the Kansas City Chiefs in the sixth round (187th overall) of the 2005 NFL Draft and signed as a free agent by the Falcons on February 12, 2009. In two seasons in Atlanta, Svitek has appeared in 29 games making two starts at left tackle.

Parrish, 6-1, 210 pounds, was most recently a member of the Virginia Destroyers of the United Football League. Parrish, who’s from East Stroudsburg University, was originally signed by the San Francisco 49ers as an undrafted free agent in 2007. He has also spent time with the Philadelphia Eagles (2009 and 2010) and the New York Jets (2009).

Svitek is god awful slow and dumb, he gets runned over all the time, even by skinny little cornerbacks! I thought Coach Smith was trying to improve this team, not bury it!

I certainly hope that M.Koenen isn’t going anywhere. He’s got to be one of our best peformers!

Svitek is a solid player with a great story of escaping from big brother in communist Czech Republic by his parents carrying him on their back while climbing over a mountain in the middle of the night. He is needed on our team.

But what’s with a punter? Strategy move by Dimitroff?

I’ve always liked Svitek as a role player — glad to see him re-signed.

Agree with Dawggie that Koenen is top notch. However there’s nothing wrong with competition.

TD doesn’t have a clue. I guess that punter should get the falcons to the super bowl.

Likely a camp punter to keep Koenen on top of his game.

Is it to far fetched for the falcons to go after AJ HAWK.

AJ Hawk already re-signed with GB. Mr. Ledbetter I hope your right, Koenen is one of the better punters in the league and with our DEF struggling all the time it would be nice to make the other teams drive a bit further before scoring

We already franchised Koenen once and he could easily get offered more $$ and walk if he’s unhappy with having been tagged. Svitek is insurance and already knows the system.

In any of your talks with Koenen, did you get the impression he was upset over having been tagged?

Svitek is a good back-up / situational player, and knows our system. I like it that we’re keeping him. Don’t understand us bringing in another punter, though…..Koenen is one of the best, in my opinion. Sure hope they don’t let him walk!

Some fans simply show their ignorance when they make certain comments. Then there are others who show their degree of ignorance when they make certain comments. NO CLUE is a perfect example of both. I mean, come on, have you every heard of a team making it to the Super Bowl WITHOUT A PUNTER?

The Falcons are being selective about who they resign. The releasing of CB BWilliams and WR BFinneran shows they’re leaning towards youth in certain areas, and the resigning of OT WSvitek shows they’re looking for experience in certain areas.

SEENTHISB4-Your moniker says it all, because as far as you coming on our blogs with your redundant BS, it’s just a reminder that we’ve all SEENTHISB4. Can you tell me anything, and I mean anything, your BELOVED AINTS have done to improve, especially that old, slow, sorry DEF?

Waynester: No.He got a kick out me calling him, “Mr. Franchise!” It made him a $2 million a year punter.

Williams and Finneran weren’t actually “released” right? They just haven’t been resigned. Glad to see us shoring up some backup options, though I hope we can keep Koenen.

Im happy to hear that William & Finnerman were not resigned. Finnerman has definately lost a step & all William do is miss tackles. He missed 3 sacks against the Saints. I pray they a deep threat and a linebacker that can cover and put pressure on the QB. Overall, I trust TD & staff. I predict we draft Pouncey in the 1st round.

‘Morning Kenneth! I see you’re a bit more intrepid than Sid. You’re right on the money about your comment regarding the Saints defense, slow and old, especially at DE, and LB. With the exception of Vilma, the rest of our LBs are as bad as the falcants LBs. Saints will probably draft a DE with their #1, that’s about probability with a 3rd degree of certainity. See ya Ken!

Why would the Falcons want another punter when the punter we have now has been doing the job consisently for the last 5 years, averaging some where around 45 to 47 yds a punt! Duh! Draft in the secondary that’s where Atlanta loses the ball games year after year, after year! It never stops! You want to win! Have the best defensive backs in the league! I Love Decoud though!

Jack R Carlile – You normally want either two punters are two kickers in camp, so you don’t wear your guys down. I concur on Mr. DeCoud. He’s a football player.

I’m absolutely fine with bringing in another punter. Unlike many of you who apparently didn’t watch any Falcons games this past year, I thought Koenen was very average for what he was paid. If I knew he’d return to 2009 form, I’d be okay keeping him around. I can’t see paying big dollars for the performance he gave last season though.

Trust the system it’s been more sucessfull than what I’ve seen in the past. If the falcons do go for a DE, I only hope it’s an experience one with a top notch resume.

I favor a DE thru free-agency and a wide receiver thru the draft. But since I only watch the games I will be happy for a better outing than last season in the play-off’s. Enought said…

D_Led: Why do you think the Falcons are putting a first round tender on Grimes? I was very impressed by him. He was targeted every game, and held his own, plus he knows the system. I may not fully understand the “tendering” game either.

We blew it by not signing Jeremy Shockey. Now he is with the Panthers so we’ll face him twice this season, AGAIN. He has our number, always plays very tough against us.

Svitek is a good backup tackle and occassional short yardage blocking tight end. Parrish is just an insurance policy for Koenen impending free agency.
I hope we can sign James Jones away from Green Bay and draft Cam Heyward. These are two moves that will dramatically improve our team.
DOL, what ’s up with Mike Johnson and Hawley? Will they live up to their status based on where they were drafted last year?
