Falcons wide receiver Brian Finneran puts a move on Carolina cornerback C.J. Wilson, picking up first down yardage with Panthers head coach John Fox looking on during 1st half action. Curtis Compton / ccompton@ajc.com
The Falcons do not plan to re-sign wide receiver Brian Finneran and cornerback Brian Williams, according to their agents.
Representatives from the team had conversations with agents Glenn Schwartzman and Jordan Feagan during the NFL scouting combine in Indianapolis.
However, the team did leave the door open for the players to return to the team once the labor situation is resolved.
“They know what he’s meant in their locker room, but they felt they wanted to give some of the younger receivers a chance to step up,” Schwartzman said.
Finneran, who turned 35 in January, has been with the Falcons since 2000. He played in all 17 games last season and made one start.
Over 11 seasons, he caught 236 passes for 3,072 yards and 19 touchdowns. He battled back from a severe knee injury that forced him to miss the 2006 and 2007 seasons.
He has been credited with helping with the development of All Pro wide receiver Roddy White.
Williams, who will turn 32 in July, was the team’s third cornerback for most of last season. He’s battled knee injuries over the last two seasons.
The team does not comment about personnel decisions.
However, in an exclusive interview with the AJC, head coach Mike Smith talked about the team creating more explosive plays on offense next season.
He also said that he expects wide receivers Harry Douglas, Kerry Meier and Eric Weems to have increased roles in the offense.

WHY Brian Williams he was good while not injured. I, too, understand finneran, all that he basically did was help out in special teams, at end of games, and catch every now and then

Fin, you will be missed. you are a class act. Roddy white said that if it was not for you he would have never grown up and settled down.
You have come back from 2 major knee blow outs and gave it your all.

(FROM MY INTERVIEW WITH COACH SMITH)
Q: What’s your receiver situation going forward? A lot of people contend that you need a number-two receiver.
A: It’s a very solid receiving corps, of course led by Roddy White. I think there will be a jump in production from Harry Douglas because it’s going to be his second year recovering from his knee surgery. Even though Harry was ready to go when the season started, he wasn’t 100 percent.
As the season progressed, he got better and better. I think it was evident in the Carolina game [in Charlotte on Dec. 12] when he caught the deep ball. Harry will be an integral part of what we want to do.
We will get Kerry Meier back. We were very impressed with him during the preseason. We felt that he was going to be a guy who could contribute not only on offense, but on special teams as well. He’s ahead of schedule as well in terms of his rehabilitation.
Eric Weems was a playmaker on special teams. He did not have a whole lot of opportunities on offense, but he is a guy who can be more involved in the offense.

That is a real bummer. We all knew it was coming though. But I’d take an entire team of Brian Finnerans and kick butt all day long. He’s been a warrior when his body kept telling him to quit and the most clutch receiver we’ve had since he’s been here. Never a guy of tremendous splash but just had a knack for making a big catch for a conversion on 3rd and long. And also a tremendous special teams player. Thanks for your efforts Fin, they didn’t go unnoticed.

Both these guys made some HUGE plays that saved games for us this past season and Finn has been awesome for years. They’re older now and I agree with the decision but have to acknowledge that both these vets contributions will be missed more than some might think. Jenkins doesn’t seem to be leader that Finn was yet we will need some of these other guys to step up and fill the veteran leadership void. I haven’t seen much leadership out of Dunta, either. Tony G.,Todd McClure and Finn have been our “lead by example” guys and after this season, all 3 will probably be gone along with Abraham. This is a critical draft for this team and I hope league turmoil doesn’t prevent us from making the needed moves in FA….

Tyler, there will be a 2011 draft, it’s everything else that’s in question.
It’s hard to see Finn’s playing days as a Falcon come to an end but it’s my belief we’ll see him in the PR office as soon as he hangs up his cletes. Think about the fact he’s quietly had a productive tenure with this team longer than the likes of Deion Sanders, Gerald Riggs, William Andrews, Andre Rison, Terence Mathis, Chuck Smith and Jamie Dukes and as long as Steve Bartkowski’s. In this day of free agency it says a lot.

I am still waiting for an announcement that the Falcons have parted ways with Brent Grimes. He had his moments last season. If you look at his overall performance since becoming a starter. He has been beaten more times than when he blocks or intercepts a pass. His effort is 110%. He just does not match up with all the much taller receivers in the league.

Not taking anything away from him, just made me realize he was more special than most people thought. I will miss him. On the other hand, I have been waiting almost a year now for Kerry Meier, who I think is gonna be very special for us. Jenkins has GOT to step it up or we need to part ways. Period. He’s not a legitimate #2 at this point for us.

Why don’t you tell that to Pat Tillman’s family?
How about the cadets who play at the military academies?
Let’s not get all high and mighty because one doesn’t become a warrior just by signing up to serve. There are people who survive in unpleasant situations who are just as tough as most of those that serve.
A real warrior doesn’t have to denigrate another man’s accomplishments because warriors have honor. The person putting down Finneran has no honor and shouldn’t be using those particular initials.

Hate to read this, but agree it’s time. I always pulled for Finneran. Without the injuries I can’t help but wonder if he is not the number 2 to Roddy. I think his playing days are limited, but with the respect he has given those in the media I wonder if he might not have a couple people knocking at his door. Just goes to show, always treat everyone with respect because you never know which one of those people you may be calling on one day. Great career, you will be missed Finn and you will always be a Falcon regardless of who signs your paycheck.

@ tom – Grimes will be one of the best corners in the league. Height at corner is not the essential element in being good. If we lose him we will be sorry. We had a pretty good nickel corner in B. Williams then C. Owens went in to sub for him (due to injury) in the GB game. What was wrong with Owens. He was awful. Did he forget everything he had learned?
So long Fin – good job.

GI, who the he77 are you? We signed the paper to join the worlds most elite fighting force in hopes of the right to fight for the freedoms we are allowed. And then we dutifully followed the orders passed down from our comander in chief, who by the way was elected by the majority of the US. Would you have the majority of our military on the front lines refusing orders because the media says there is a more important battle to be fought somewhere else? I think not, we follow orders, we win the battle and voice our opinions at the ballot box. It’s not brain washing, it’s called following orders in an effort to defend our great nation. But I digress.

I hate to see them go but it’s not really a surprise. Finn and Williams have both been plagued with injuries and even though that’s not their fault you can’t keep paying for guys to stay injured. I think the Falcons see that Kerry Meir kid as a potential replacement for Finn although he’s injured too. I personally would love to see them take a receiver somewhere in this draft, a burner would be great someone that can take some of the pressure off of Roddy and then let Jenkins fill Finnerans role as a possesion receiver. Jenkins is not a true #2.,

11 years for any receiver in the NFL is pretty good. I imagine the Falcons will be going for a tall possession receiver in the late first day or second day in the draft. They must have looked out there and decided they have a handful this year to choice from. I could see that kid from Georgia, Durham being this guy. Smart, coach-able, tough, very much like Fin. There is a small trend towards these kind of guys, New England does well with them, which I imagine is our blueprint.

So falcons have released a safety, corner, and WR. so we need to fill those either from practice squad, FA, or draft. Finn release makes room for Meier to return, if they draft a WR, who gets cut. There’s’s a safety on the practice squad, kid from south carolina I believe. So do Falcons take a CB, DE, or WR, or maybe OL with first pick? I think it depends on who falls to them at 27.

He was a total class act and I do hope the Falcons bring him back as a coach, or front office if he wants. Wish more of the players where like him and less “SHOW ME THE MONEY!!!” I never begrudge anyone for getting what they can get, but often the player could show so much more class when going about it!!!!!!!!

I am sorry that we lost finn and williams but I understand the business.Finn was getting old and we need to get younger more athletic at wr, williams is good when he is not hurt but he stays hurt more than on the feild we have to get younger at cb. But there is no on de in the draft that is coming in and ready to play in the nfl right now, our best be to get a de ready to help now is in fa, and then we can go to the draft to get other parts of this pie so finish baking.

I truly believe, they are going to take, best player available between, LOT or DE.
If someone fell like Julio Jones (Bama) Or (AJ Green) OR one of the 2 best CB then yea we would take them, but they are not falling to us!!!!!! So I believe, we are going to sit and wait like last year when TD knew we would have one of 4 or 5 guys fall to us, Marquis Pouncey, one of the DE, or Spoon.

llacons are big on Schlessinger (sp?), the safty from Montana. He played good on ST last season and I see them expanding his role a little. Weir is to take over as the possesion reciever I would guess. They still will draft a speedy WR i think, juts not with a high pick. I would imagine they grab one in FA for some immediate help, they are already pretty young at the position. They will get a lineman for each side of the ball early and probably a CB.
Finn will make a good coach if he chooses some day. He wasn;t bad on the radio when he was hurt either. Damn good Falcon, been a pleasure watching him.

So I’m at the Home Depot in F-Branch, prob 2 wks till Christmas. standing in the aisle looking for lights…look up and see B-FINN searching for lights as well…standing beside me. It was the Mon after the away Tampa game (was a brutal game that went down to literally the last play, very tough/physical game) B-FINN took time to sign an autograph for my son, and we just stood there talking about the game, the season, and fball in gen…I walked away feeling as if I had just made a friend, like he genuinely appreciated hearing from a no name fan bugging him as he shopped. I can’t say when the last time I’ve felt that way about one of my REAL friends, much less a professional fball player. The world would be a better place if there were more B-FINN-s in it. I am beyond sad. My favorite player since he came he and I said to myself, “Who’s that tall white guy Chandler’s throwing to?!” A class act, team leader, awesome receiver with fly-paper hands…Brian Finneran will NEVER be replaced. I don’t care how good Kerry Meier is, he ‘aint Finn!!!! I think this is a big mistake. You can never ever underestimate his influence on this team, he will be very sorely missed. He’s said he doesn’t want to coach right now while his kids are young. He wants to be able to see them grow up. I will proudly continue to wear my #86 jersey to every Falcon’s game I attend. We love you Finn!!!! I root for Villanova because of you!

They should have been gotten rid of both these players last year. The Falcons have to learn how to part ways with “Unproductive” players. Another player that needs to go is “Michael Butterfinger Jenkins.”

The NFL is still a business not trying to keep everybody happy. Finneran was aging and slow. Williams always missed tackles and is slow. Brent Grimes must be next he awlaws gets pushed and shoved around like a little kid. Now we have to trade the bust Jamal Anderson to a 3-4 team for a mid round draft pick. Sign Ray Edward for your 7 -10 sacks.

Sorry to see FINN let go. Great representative of Atl Falcons and NFL. Enjoyed his play and rooted for him. That being said and Weems aside( cause he can BURN on da punt),the falcons need to cut more WR’s and open the checkbook…….SIDNEY RICE!
Oh, and fix the defense. lol

Brian Finneran is a class act. He needs to be a Falcon now and forever. Clubhouse, on field, and off field leadership alone should keep him with the Falcons. No one works harder and is more humble and dependable.

The Falcons should have parted ways with Finnerin from the beginning. All he did in his first few seasons was drop about 100 balls per year. How he managed to make it all these years is a mystery to me. He is a no-talent wideout who only made it because he has athletic ability and can jump high. He cant run a clean route and get open and he was never a difference maker.

Finn has done a great job as a leader in our locker room and has been extremely reliable whenever he was on field, whether it be on offense, special teams, or even defense (i.e., hail marys at the end of games). Finn is a big reason why Roddy is the player he is now, and I hope that we can possibly re-sign him later. Brian Williams, though he was nagged by injuries, was pretty solid as our nickel back, and we were definitely short on defense without him. We will definitely have to find someone to replace him, because we all know Chris Owens isn’t the one to do it. CB seems to be a tricky position for TD (Chevis Jackson, gone; Chris Owens, bad so far; Dominique Franks,???;). I would like to see us get a CB with better size, and ball skills, as well as cover skills. I kinda wish we were in a position to get Patrick Peterson. Imagine Peterson and Grimes together, that would be a great tandem.

Hard not to like Finneran. Hopefully, he can return to the Falcons after the CBA gets done. Otherwise, I wish him the best. I’m sure he’ll be successful, no matter what he decides to do next.

Finneran was to the Falcons what Chris Durham was to UGA Dawgs, A competent “go to” receiver when you had to move the ball. Both are class acts and and are a credit to our society. I hope to se both playing in the future.

Dan, it has been said on numerous occassions that Joe Horn helped Roddy White become a better player. He stressed the notion that “you practice like you play”. Roddy acknowledges that he was not as focused in practice as he should have been. During the receiver drills, you could see how serious Horn was and how he did not let a ball hit the ground. Roddy followed his advice and formed good practice habits during the 2007 off-season. It resulted in his break out season in 2007. And where was Brian Finneran during that time? Injured, on crutches, and on the sideline. Continue to ignore the facts and focus on trivial, non-football related stuff to further your idiotic argument.

Really hate to see Finneran go. He was THE class act of the Falcons and has been for years. Very clutch receiver especially on third downs. Also one hell of a blocker down field. Do we all remember the photo of Finn down field clearing two would be tacklers on Weems late season return for a touchdown? He always gave the team his all.
However, I knew when we drafted Kerry Meiers that Finn’s days were numbered. Meiers play is a mirror of what Finns has been. Not overly fast but killer hands and knows how to find the open spots. We do however still need a speed receiver to stretch the field and take some pressure off of Roddy. Douglas has the quickness, not so much the top end speed but he is much better suited for the slot.
I do hate to see Williams go with out us having a dependable replacement. When healthy, he was a quality player. I think he still has gas left in his tank and is definitely better than Owens.
But back to Finn. I thank you for your efforts and hope you the best. I would love to see the team bring you into the coaching fold. I believe you would be very successful there.

Finn has had some good years for us, but I agree with the decision. B Williams has lost a step due to injury and we need the fastest and the best at all of our secondary positions to be a serious contender.
Some people might not like this but I think the Falcons need to go talk to Plexico Buress when he is released. He would be an upgrade from Jenkins and a true threat over the middle or deep for that matter. A great compliment to Roddy. I bet he comes in here and is a model citizen after what he has gone thru. He will be released sometime in June and the Giants look like they are not interested in bringing him back. It’s a risk, but I think with his size, speed, and natural ability, it is one that we should take.
Think long and hard about this one Aurthur, and I would obviously go and have some facetime with him as well.
Go Birdz!!!!

Falcon57, I agree with you B Williams is definitely better than Owens. I am better than Owens. My nephew is better than Owens. My wife is better than Owens. Hell, my dog could cover better than Owens! I played in the secondary from little league thru college. He plays like a little timid girl, has no sense of where he should be or where the ball is, and thus gets beat multiple times. I just prayed that the opposition did not throw the ball his way. Grimy Grimes won me over, but he is STILL TOO SMALL! Grimes should play nickel and we need a big, fast, cover corner opposite Duate’. OWENS IS NOT NFL MATERIAL, PLEASE CUT OR RELEASE HIM, HE IS TURRIBLE!!! LOL

“That’s pretty interesting about Smitty not mentioning Jenks. Richardo Lockette = 27th pick?” That can’t be a serious question can it? Anyway Finn was a asset to the team in terms of redzone threat, special teams, and locker room leadership. But Meier is going to take the slot next season hopefully. You know that kid Blair White from the Colts. THey call him the “BLAIR WHITE PROJECT.” We need to get a guy like that, 6′4″ just like Finn was with the Hands to keep pressure when we get to the redzone because jenkins isn’t a threat at all.
But next year is when Calvin Johnson is a free agent so I could see us signing him.

Led, I see the Falcons making a splash at WR this year. I wouldn’t be surprised to see them spend big money to bring Sidney Rice in. Those other receivers don’t do enough and they can’t replace the height mismatches that Finneran did.

OH and they want more “explosive” plays…they won’t get they in Mularkey’s offense! They have the personnel to do it, even with Finn but Mularkey’s offense doesn’t work that way. And I’m sick of hearing Kerry Meier is the new Finn. Nothing against Meier but there’s only 1 Finn and he should still be a Falcon!!! I want him on that sideline, in whatever capacity! The Falcons better bring him back into the fold somehow in someway. I’m just sick that he’s gone.

@ JeanE, he’s not Fineran, but (rest assured) Kerry Meier has solid talent (35″ vertical leap & 4.5 40 y/d) & good size (6′2, 225). If Kerry stays healthy, I think he has a good shot at the starting line-up.

@ tbhawksfan, Smith wasn’t ‘calling’ Jenkins out. He simply omitted saying anything negative about Jenkins. You know the old saying? “if you can’t say anything good, then don’t say anything at all”. Smith is a class coach and rather than noting the negative, he stated the positive concerning the receiving corps. But yes, it does make a huge statement. Again I say watch the Falcons either bringing in a legit number 2 reciever or grabbing one with the first pick. DE is a need but the draft is deep all along the defensive line and a DE could be picked up with the 2nd pick.
And as far as Meier being referrenced to as Finn, I think what people are saying is he plays the way Finn does as far as a legit possession receiver. He has size and knowledge of how to get open and has tremendous hands. All were traits Finn displayed over his years with the Falcons. Can Meier do all the things that Finn did? Not today nor tomorrow but he does fill a very big void in alot of areas. I’m interested to see him play.
