NFL COMBINE: Cam Newton throws poorly

(UPDATE)

INDIANAPOLIS – Of the top quarterbacks, Ryan Mallett (Arkansas) had the best day throwing the football on Sunday.

He displayed the strongest arm and was accurate in the first session.

Jake Locker (Washington) also had a solid day.

In the second session, Cam Newton (Auburn) had some shaky mechanics and that led to some wild passes. He was dropping back too slow and then rushing his passes. He was wildly off the mark on three straight passes on 10-yard out routes.

Overall, Newton completed 11 of 21 passes after helping out receivers in the across-the-field gauntlet pass-catching drill.

Newton was two-for-three on deep post-corner routes, his best throws of the day.

T.J. Yates (North Carolina, Pope) had a strong showing and threw his deep passes with accuracy.

” This is when we really get a chance to evaluate these guys and see what they can do,” Arizona coach Ken Whisenhunt said.  “You never know. We have a guy we got in the fifth round last year, John Skelton that we are excited about. He has a good arm and  did some good things for us, but he felt the pressure to be successful and win even though he was a fifth-round pick.

“It comes down to how you evaluate these players and how you think they will fit your team.”

Check out Auburn’s Cam Newton  run the 40-yard dash.

its going to be tough for carolina, aj, cam newton or blake will be the first pick. aj and julio are the best 1 & 2 in the draft this year. As for falcons i like the defensive end from california bears, cameron jordan-he can play any d line spot. I like Leonard hankerson- a big fast reciever right after aj and julio. And of course mike pouncey – center from florida. first round probables for atl- mike poncey, leonard hankerson and cameron jordan.

i said blaine gabbert for one of the first picks in the draft, either way carolina will be scratching their head for not picking aj or julio- good luck. cam newton is going to be a good qb but he needs to go with a team without a starting qb.

If you watch any of the Combine, you notice that Newton stands out. Not just talent-wise, but confidence as well. He will be the top QB taken in the draft and I bet a lot of teams will call Carolina/Denver/Buffalo to try and trade up to get him. http://bit.ly/NFLMockDraft2

Cam is so full of himself with the personality of a wall with drying paint. Hope he can perform for who ever gets stuck with him and his dad.

If being full of yourself mattered, half of sports fans and almost all of the athletes would have to find other things to do.

naw, i change my mind, the first pick in the 2011 draft is CAM NEWTON. He can throw run and play his team back from any deficit. He has it. he is big ,strong and tough. This man creates plays.

Sure sounds like Cam Newton has Tim Tebow’s problem: how to adapt his talent to a different game, how to change his mechanics without losing his effectiveness.

Both were winners in college. Neither lacks for confidence.

Tellingly, despite his late-season dramatics, Tebow’s team still has doubts about him. This suggests that Newton is unlikely to have a painless transition to running a pro offense.

It’s going to be interesting watching these two players try to duplicate their college success in the NFL.

Sadly, as a Redksins fan suffering under a star-power addicted owner, there’s a decent chance I’ll be sharing some of the agony of Newton’s defeats.

Spread QBs are not “destined to be busts” as much as they are a lot more dependent on landing in a stable situation than QBs who come from a pro style offense. If a spread QB goes to a team that fires its coaching staff after a year and makes the QB have to learn a new system — like Alex Smith in SF — it’s more likely that QB ends up not panning out. The learning curve is steeper for them, so stability matters more.

This shouldn’t surprise anyone. He has a lot of work to do if he wants to be a starter in the NFL. Has nothing to do with talent, bottom line is he is used to running the spread and it will take a long while before he is ready.

Cam will be a work in progress from the VERY beginning and the big question is how long will it take for him to deliver.

So much of what is required to be a successful QB is mental ,the ability to read defenses, call audibles within a split second.

This is a huge change from the college game simply because college kids do not have the time ,since they are students first and not full time football players!

IT is a crap shoot to find a QB who can handle this multi- facet job call a NFL QB.

I have been telling people this for months. Ryan Mallet will come out as the Top QB in this draft. Please record this and/or print it out for your records. Come back and repost this article in 2 years with a BIG, “i told you so”. It’s not rocket science with this years QB class. Sn: Mark Ingram to the Falcons? I hope they pass on him too, we need a healthy RB…not another injury prone one like Norwood. -I’m just saying.

The NFL Combine has to rank among the biggest wastes of athletic time and energy in man’s history! You have tape after tape after tape of every game these players played in. Especially when it comes to the QB’s, every athletic act they make is recorded.

Newton was the highest rated passer in Div-1A football. Timing on an out route is as much receiver speed on the route as quarterback timing on the pass. So, when it comes down to it, any NFL scout who would put more stock in one combine throwing session vice vaults of tape in real action is a fool two times over!

Newton has the height, strength, speed, and passing accuracy to do well. For Carolina you can be certain he would be a step up from Jimmy Clausen and the others on their roster last season!

Lovin’ all the haters on here. You guys keep on hatin and I’ll keep on enjoying the Championship.

Cam will do fine in the NFL, he is smart enough and strong and will be able to adapt to the NFL. He played in three college systems that all won NCs and he was the key component on two of them.

“We try hard to get it right every time,” NCAA president Mark Emmert said. “Getting it right is often in the eye of the beholder. The cases we saw this fall were highly controversial and highly debatable… There was no evidence that money had changed hands and there was no evidence that Auburn University had anything to do with it.”

No evidence, means it’s done.

If in the future evidence does arise, then they will look at, but it’s over. And, if evidence does show AU was involved in anything crooked, they deserve what they get.

Dog fans are so bitter. Why be bitter? Auburn fans aren’t calling in the Cam-bine, the national media is. Newton is probably the greatest QB ever to play the college game. Ever. And he very well could be one of the greatest NFL QB’s in two decades. The guy is a winner. People will tune in to watch him play. He’ll live up to the hype and eat up the adversity. He had his off days at Auburn, well really just the BCS game but after 5 weeks off, but they still went 14-0.

Now dog fans, you just reinstated your RB, you guys shouldn’t be so bitter. You just showed the world that timeout in CFB is just 2 weeks. :D

Newton beat the living snot out the record books, passing efficiency and Georgia. I beat the snot out of Georgia too and now everyone knows I did it while injured. Cheap shots by Ben Jones.

Cam Newton is the best QB in this draft. The guy is a leader and a winner. That cannot be denied. None of the QBs really stood out, which is understandable when you consider the lack of familiarity with the WRs. When I put the game tape in, however, I see talent and a damn good qb. Blaine Gabbert refused to throw today. That says alot about him. In addition, Ryan Mallett is a druggie. Funny how they glossed over this during the telecast. What if it had been Cam? White boys get the so-called “mulligan”!

I’ve seen article after article about this total dirtbag and his NFL tryout junk. Quit reporting on him. He is a total dirtbag and does not deserve the glory. Plus, who cares what any of these players do at mere tryouts/combines anyway. Let us know what they do in an actual game. As for dirtbag Cam, I hope he is a miserable failure and does not make a dime. He is a scumbag who does not deserve a darn thing.

Cam is probably going to be drafted in the 1st round. Sure he has issues, his nick name should be Cam “Rolo Tomassi” Newton. But he has tremendous potential….and that is what the draft is about. He will likely have to sit a year or 2…The only thing that would be really interesting is if he is drafted in the 2nd round….How would Cam respond to the pay cut?
