Falcons owner Arthur Blank, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell and Ravens owner Steve Bisciotti. (D. Orlando Ledbetter/DLedbetter@ajc.com)
The Falcons cleared a major hurdle today in their quest for a new outdoor stadium.
The Georgia World Congress Center Authority and the team have entered into one of those “memorandum of understanding” about the project.
Here is the stadium that Falcons provided to the AJC about the matter.
“The Georgia World Congress Center Authority commissioned and has received the results of the study performed by Populous regarding the potential for a new stadium on the Authority’s campus.
“The Authority has shared the report with us as part of our joint exploration of development options. The report addresses a number of topics that will be considered by the Authority and the Falcons as planning discussions move forward.
“We appreciate the Authority’s diligence in working through this process in a thorough and thoughtful manner. We continue to have open dialogue with the Authority on a range of topics and options, with the shared goal of working toward an agreement that is in the best interests of the community, our fans and all other stakeholders involved. At this point, no decisions have been made; therefore, we will have no further public comment at this time.”
Here is the news story on the stadium.
Check out the master plan, here.
Bundle up y’all, the Falcons could be back outside by the 2017 season.

Open air stadium is the worst idea ever. It’s blazing hot here through late October so even when its not raining- its too hot to sit in the sun; especially if you have younger kids. I also don’t think they are going to gie Atlanta a super bowl with an open air stadium, especially after what happened in Dalls. I don’t understand Arthur’s thought process on this at all.

I’m not wild on the site for the Stadium. It’s too far of a walk from MARTA.
I say keep the Falcons in the Dome and do a retractable roof if you really want the option of outdoors.

Seriously???, give up your season tickets if the Falcons move into an open air stadium?? Are you kidding me? I for one would love to go back outside. This is from someone who has had season tickets for the Falcons at the Dome and at the Stadium. By FAR the better game experience was the outdoor stadium not even close. Fall football in the South is incredible(yes even winter football too). Not to mention better tailgating possibilities with the new site. I am all for it and for all of you FOOTBALL fans who cannot handle the outdoor elements to watch a game you need to go away and let some real football fans have your seats. Not that they should be building a new stadium anyway, since it will inevitably involve a ton of public money that this city and state can’t afford, but if they do they would be foolish not to include a roof of some kind, retractable or otherwise.
And hopefully they don’t make the same mistake so many of these other new stadiums do, where they forget about acoustics and end up negating the impact of home crowd noise. The New Meadowlands is notorious for this.

Because part of the agreement that got the Olympic Stadium (now Turner Field) built excluded the building of a 2nd Stadium in Summerhill… The City of Atlanta destroyed a once vibrant neighborhood to build that outside toilet bowl in 1966 and the 75/85/20 interchange…

Green Bay outdoors, Chicago outdoors, New England outdoors, Philadelphia outdoors, New York outdoors, Pittsburgh outdoors, Denver outdoors, Buffalo outdoors. Do you know what all of these and many more outdoor teams have that we don’t? Super Bowl Championships(except for Buffalo but hey they played in four straight). Dome teams do not win championships. Seriously! When is the last time an SEC team built a “new” stadium? Sure additions, renovations, etc. have taken place, but almost every freaking SEC team is in the same home they have been in for the past 50 to 100+ years; they pack in on average 10 to 20,000 more fans per game than Artie’s new playground; not a one is surrounded by 20,000+ parking spaces, yet everyone manages to find a spot to park and tailgating isn’t even comparable it is so much better; fan base is more loyal; and the program largely functions on donations from alumni and ticket sales! Granted they don’t ‘pay’ their players, but build a winning team, some history and tradition, and you don’t need a crappy new stadium that drains the tax base for the next 20 years! IF FALCON’S FANS WANT A NEW STADIUM, LET THEM AND ARTIE PAY FOR THE FREAKING THING THEMSELVES!!

The clowns that are whinning about Hope, what did people do before the scholarship, they paid for classes like I did with student loans, financial aid, and working full-time and parttime. The hope is a joke, you have high-school graduate getting hope that take remedial classes. Many lost hope after the first 2 semesters when reality kicks in and they understand college professors do not have to pass them!!! They will give you a F, and won’t think twice about it. We know the grades are inflated just to get student into the Hope program so this way the best students will have an opportunity to get a free education. There are other ways to pay for college, join the military and sign up for the GI Bill. This generation is lazy, college is not a right, you earn it through hard work, sweat equity, and financial equity. You want to go, no hope you pay for it.

And go ask the people of Oakland County Michigan of what is like to be stuck with municipal debt for the next 20 years with a white elephant because a greedy owner expects to subsidized in order to make money on top of $9 billion in profits they alone share? The city of atlanta needs to break the bank and give Blank whatever stadium he wants—if not, he may get mad and move the team to some bigger market with more money, like LA or Vegas. Just jack up taxes and ticket prices for a few years to pay for everything—it will be worth it in the long run.

Well, I’ll hold on to me tickets until we move into the outdoor stadium. For those that said football is for outdoor you really haven’t experienced outdoor football until you go north. I’ve been to D.C., Baltimore, Philly, and New York for games and it’s not even funny watching parents carrying blankets for their kids. Better yet try walking from the concessions with coco and the crap is cold before you get back to your seat.
I love m y Falcons, but I’m just like a spoiled athlete I feel as if I’m entitled to sit in luxury with a roof over my head since that’s what I’ve been accustom too. JSS..You apparently do not have a clue. I was not discussing the financing of the facility in my posts. I was addressing the fact that people were complaining about the WEATHER and they do not want to be hot or cold while watching a football game. The financial aspect is a whole different ballgame. My point is outdoor football is better than indoor football as I have paid to watch both therefore, I have earned the right to voice my opinion. And my opinion is you and all of the other people on this blog who don’t want to go outside should keep their candy a**ses at home and watch the game under your roof. Everyone should read the stadium plan DOL provided the link for before commenting….they are not going to demolsh GA Dome; it will be maintained for other sporting events/conventions/concerts. Having both will be a unique amenity and the financing will be a continuation of the existing bonds that are due to expire early in 2016 (+/-). Would the ownership of the Falcon’s provide the fans who buy the tickets a say in this matter. Conduct a survey about an open air stadium. I feel few would be in favor and that is why the owners don’t want the feedback.I have been a season ticket holder in the past. If they build an open air stadium I will not purchase a ticket. I am sure others will watch from home as I will. How stupid. The future Super Bowl to be played outdoors will probably be a weather disaster and they will only accept bids for indoor stadiums afterwards. Forget

Waste our hotel tax money on that instead of addressing crucial infrastructure needs like our backlog of $786 million plus in overdue city roadwork. And the water and sewer project. And who knows what else. Please Arthur, either stay in the Dome, pay for the new stadium yourself, or move the team somewhere else. We have more important needs than a stadium that MIGHT hold one Superbowl, MIGHT hold a few FIFA matches, and will otherwise be used for 10 to 12 NFL games a year and nothing else!

I would also not renew my season tickets…well, maybe and sell most. It’s too hot in the fall and I remember going to games in the old Atlanta-Fulton county stadium that were waaaaaay too hot and too cold. If I have to be in the elements, I prefer to stay at home and watch the game. The NFL doesn’t want Atlanta to have another Superbowl. They keep awarding them to New Orleans and the Superdome is the worst stadium in the league. Atlanta should have never gotten rid of the party zone in Buckhead.

Im not sure of how many games I want to freeze to watch in the cold or sit in the 90 degree heat in August and September. A retractable roof would be ideal. If the are going to build a new stadium make it a retractable roof then you can have the best of both worlds.

HFF- Atlanta is WAY ahead of Seattle and Charlotte in a number of measures (both with open air stadiums as well), and the GA Dome is not being torn down.
Atlanta will have a great Dome, and open air football stadium, and an exclusive for baseball stadium all within a short walk of the GAWCC and all of the downtown hotels.
I love the GA Dome, the sightlines are the best of any football stadium I have ever visitied, and the food is good; but an open air stadium with a view of the skyline will be a great experience and provide another entertainment/convention venue.
Super Bowl or not, all of these venues together will give Atlanta an unmatched hospitality infrastructure advantage.

I dont like the plan. It needs a retractable roof..otherwise, as the Ga Dome slowly ages, the events such as the SEC champ game could go elsewhere. I have been to many retractable roof stadiums and the retractable roof stadiums are like auto T-tops and will go the way of the old circular multi-purpose stadiums. Phoenix probably has the best stadium of this type, and needs it because of the climate, but you never feel like you are at an outdoor event in one of those buildings, adn the future maintenance cost on those things will be enormous. Better to go all outdoor or all dome.

Hey, I got an idea…. Let’s move the football stadium farther away from the only public transportation subway that Atlanta has, take the roof off of it, and then force thousands of football fans to sit out in either horribly hot or frigid cold temperatures, rain or snow (depending on the time of year), and lose any opportunity that our city has to ever host a Super Bowl in the future, since you can’t put a roof over an open-air stadium.
Meanwhile, a beautiful domed stadium, already standing, could be renovated, given a retractable roof, have major enhancements to it to allow for the suite revenues that Blank is looking for, and save a lot of money, particularly tax-payer money. But, then again, that’s probably not the most logical option to millionaires who don’t have to worry about putting food on the table, and who’s only interest in going to a football game is so they can be seen and not be a fan.
I’m just saying….

From what I gather from the article it is all about Blank. It seems fans don’t matter, just so he gets what he wants. Fewer seats at higher price. What is that?! Money people in out of the rain. respecter of persons. Parking? Fans sit in cold, walk ther in cold, etc. The dome is perfect for the winning tteam and fans. But neither matters any more. Money and prestige. 700 million to build?! He must plan on getting a sweet deal because the fans are being fleece. Fans get less for more dollars. Want be going to any of those. Blank has shown his colors.

It is going to come down to how well the Falcons produce within the next few years….*IF* an open air stadium is built and the Falcons haven’t won a superbowl by than, then the Fans will NOT show up, if the Falcons are successful, then an open air stadium will not divide the fanbase(at least not by much)…its as simple as that.
Personally, I believe(also) that Football should be played in the elements, especially in a fairly decent football weather city… Some aren’t going to agree, that’s why we have blogs to discuss these things, I remember football at Atlanta Fulton County Stadium and to all of the people who have said that they have had horrible (weather) experiences at the stadium, you are correct; however, that’s everywhere! That is part of what makes Football fun!! The ELEMENTS!!! Not to mention the fact that the Falcons shared that stadium with the Braves, a team that we go and spend money on to sit in those blazing hot summer conditions in the A-town, so what’s the big deal?
And while on that topic, Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium had features that were designed to accommodate Baseball in several aspects and it wasn’t the best place to watch Football, with a new, or retractable roof (preferred) the Falcons and other Football events will be more accommodating for the fans than Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium was…..
Areas outside the city would be good, but think about the traffic withini communities, along the underdeveloped highways, etc. True, its like that now in some cases and its like that down in Hampton for the Nascar events, but public transportation is the key and it would be easier to accommodate fans without as many traffic tie-ups. I do however agree that there needs to be more tailgating space (a lot more) for fans.
In conclusion, in this State that is dominated by college football, we pay big bucks and travel far to attend college games that are played outdoors….in the ELEMENTS!!!! Why not for a Sunday afternoon Falcon game? The only difference is the day that it is played on….
People, this isn’t a basketball game, let’s all grow some n^ts and deal with the elements and (perhaps the high price it brings..lol )

$700 million is pocket change for a big time, state of the art stadium. Atlanta can easily afford this. Jerry Jones stadium cost a billion so Atlanta would be getting a good deal. The city can raise all this cash by issuing bonds, raising taxes on restaurants and hotels, car rental, etc. It can be paid for in 10 years easy. The city needs to pay up if they want to keep the falcons. Blank can take the team to a bunch of cities that want a franchise.

The new stadium is not just for Mr. Blank, although granted he is the greatest individual beneficiary.
Those big hotels downtown need to be filled. Atlanta keeps adding critical mass to downtown to everyone’s benefit (dining, transportation, construction, real estate).
Everyone complained when Georgia Dome was built. (too expensive, we have a stadium, why downtown, football indoors!) Building Georgia Dome was a great investment. (oddly, nobody seemed to complain about the Omni being replaced, but I loved that building)
Atlanta has made these investments to grow and stay ahead of the curve time and time again….seems like a continuation of that historically productive plan.
Also, regarding the location: the streetcar will run from the Marta North line to the pedestrian bridge, and do not think that GA Tech might not play in the new stadium in twenty years. Grant Field is right in the middle of some scarce and valuable real estate – all it will take is one outgoing president to make the move.

I’m assuming with this much work already put into it, it’s a done deal.
MARTA (or lack thereof) is the one major red flag. I wonder how many folks currently take MARTA to the games, and how many still would once a one-mile walk becomes part of the journey. And then, how many additional, yet non-existent, parking spaces will be required.
I say it should be illegal to build something like this without direct, mass transit.
Oh well, I suppose Atlanta will never learn and will keep doing the same dumbsh*t over and over again.

Arthur Blank is such an idiot! I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, the Falcons will NEVER win a SB because Blank is too concern with his image. He should channel his energies towards bringing in a better a GM or top tier players to win.
Personally, I wish he would move the team out of the state so we can get an owner in here that has the football knowledge, confidence and savvy to build a winning organization. Let Arthur Blank pay for it himself. He will get all the riches, and we will get stuck with the bill. We are already paying for the $60 million plus interest that the GOP saddled Georgia with for 3 projects in Sonny Purdue’s county/town. I thought the cry from the GOP and TEA PARTY was NO NEW TAXES! Continuing the bond is the same as continuing the toll on GA 400.
Yet we cut services for the poor, send jobs overseas, cut teachers pay and furlow them, larger classes, cut the HOPE.
The NFL wants players to play 2 more regular season games (more injuries and concussions that kill players sooner or drive them to suicide) and they also want the players to take a pay cut to help the owners with the stadiums that owners want. God help us! Have we lost all sense of morality in this country?

How about we put some of that stadium money into our education system?

Sorry, but this Falcon season ticket holder is not going to pay a PSL and then pay for season tickets for any new stadium. I can almost guarantee that PSL’s will be used to defray the cost of the stadium.
And after the FIASCO in Arlington what do you think will happen when a freezing rain and ice storm hits Atlanta during a game in december or on the last game of the regular season in the middle of january (18 game season will be in effect then). Also remember what happened to the Carolina season ticket holders that could not afford playoff tickets against Arizona. They lost their seats for the next year. They also lost their PSL money.

I was a season ticket holder but i really prefer to watch from home. I think the Georgia Dome is a great place to watch football. 2 times my seat has been almost the top row in the end zone but you still have a “bird’s eye view”. When my seats were in the club level they were good.
If they build a new stadium with no public money, I will not be against it. But if the only reason to build it is for another Super Bowl, and public money is used, I vote no. Reading the comments and talking to people around town, most are happy with the dome. The Peach Bowl sells out every year, now the kick off classic. If they want to spend some money to upgrade the facility, that would be money well spent. It will be the NFL’s loss if they don’t come back to Atlanta, not ours.

Why do they need an open air stadium. If there are really bad rain storms, they have to cancel the games. In the summer it’s going to be hot. In the 90’s most days. They should just remodel the old stadium. The whole point of a dome is not to cancel games.

I am reminded of the TV cell phone add when the cell phone addict drops his phone into a uninal — while using it — and quickly sticks his hand in to retrieve it . . . . .Really???? Really????? It’s about that bad isn’t it? There is nothing else this city, this region, this state . . . needs more than a new outdoor stadium? Can’t think of a thing? Call their damned bluff. Be the first city, county, region, state to do that. Start a trend. It might catch on. Or, here’s a novel idea, do it for a share of the profits. For the same type a share a private lender, partner, or financier would demand. Oops. There goes the NFL business model that keeps them all the owners billionaires and all the players millionaires. No free stadium??? What are you, a communist? Cities, counties, states, the Feds are all flat busted broke – and we need a new stadium to replace one with years and years of useful life left ???? Are we living in an insane asylum. Call their bluff. Let them leave. How many minutes before someon else will want the Atlanta market and to set up shop in the Georgia Dome. Five minutes. Ten minutes? The NFL will never do it, because they are afraid that if someone does — it might start a trend of no more free stadiums costing hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars that they can get tired of and leave in a few short years — unless they get more. And think about this. The Super Bowl has not been back since 2000. The NFL was displeased. Seems there was an ice storm the morning of the game that kept the Georgia Dome from filling up completely with fans before game time. Now they want to put the whole damned thing outside???? Is this the Twilight Zone? Seems like it.

No tax money for greedy NFL owners! The stadium should be built only if Falcons owner Arthur Blank pays for it himself. The new stadium would include many new executive boxes for really rich guys and steal from Georgia taxpayers. About a third of the Dallas (Arlington really) stadium was paid with taxpayer money and New Jersey taxpayers are still paying off the bonds for the demolished Meadowlands stadium. I am driving on streets that need repaving and make it seem like we live in a Third World country. Any additional taxpayer revenue should help restore the numerous cuts made to education from Gov. Sonny Perdue and repave roads/bridges.

SUPERBOWL… WHAT A JOKE….
I’m going to keep it real… The GA DOME is not the reason why Atlanta didn’t get the superbowl. The weather in Atlanta isn’t the reason we didn’t get the superbowl..
ATLANTA didn’t get the superbowl because the NFL owners didn’t like Aurther Blank… The owners didn’t like AB because he was a business man and not a business man with football knowledge. AB really pissed them off when he was rolling MV on the field after he broke his leg… So the owners black balled AB in the voting of the superbowl… So just because we get a new stadium, it doesn’t mean were an automatic vote for a super bowl…
An open air stadium with reduced seating will increase the ticket price and the die hard fans will not be able to afford a ticket…LEAVE THE FALCONS IN THE GA DOME… NEW STADIUM = 1 LESS STH

Let’s go back to a time where in November at the cherished Fulton County Stadium, it was a drizzling rain, temps in the 40s, and the Falcons were winning or loosing. Didn’t matter. Very rarely on T.V. becasue it was blacked out due to no sell outs. Even in playoff years, did the games get on T.V. much. Outside Football? We had an ice storm for our only Super Bowl in the Atl. Now, why did people migrate to the south? Because of the weather? Yes, it is warmer than those places mentioned, but who is actually going to the games? The people who came down here from there. Retractable roof? Yes. Outdoors in November / December? Probably not a good idea. Mr. Blank just lost about $700,000,000.00 of respect from some of us. And we’re going to pay for his new playground? You Betcha. If the tax payers have to ante up for it, then shouldn’t we have a vote on it?

I’m in the “football is meant to be played outdoors” camp. However, pro football is a little bit different…paid players, paid cheerleaders, luxury boxes AND the season lasts a little longer. Getting a Super Bowl is a pipe dream and the “economic advantages” argument is specious. Keeping the Dome for basketball seems ludicrous…when ya have Philips; or even Gwinnett.
Mr Blank can do what he wants as long as it doesn’t cost us taxpayers a red cent….except maybe ATL and the GWCCA paying to extend/enhance MARTA.

Terrible Idea. Parking and traffic will be worse since it’s not attached to a MARTA station. The PSLs will drive up ticket prices. There are only 2 or 3 games a year max that would be enjoyable outdoors. The economic impact of hosting a superbowl, while significant, is overvalued. The only positive would be getting another bowl game.

I don’t like the fact that the state is cutting the HOPE scholarships. It has been one of the bright spots in our state government for years.
I like even less the idea of an open air stadium. One of the most miserable afternoons of my life was sitting in the stadium watching the Falcons play the Vikings in the rain at 30 degrees at Atlanta Fulton County Stadium. Most of the people I know who are talking about we want an open air stadium are people who go to 1 or 2 games, if that, a year and holler about how they would like the stadium to be open air. I can only think of one team that went to a dome stadium to an open air stadium and that is Seattle. I would be curious to see a poll of Seattle season ticket holders on how they like sitting in the “open air” now.
PEOPLE, if you really want to stop this madness, you won’t get Blank to take notice of your displeasure writing on blogs. YOU HAVE TO TAKE IT TO HIM. Start a write-in campaign to the Falcons asking to NOT build an open air stadium. It is the only way “we” will be taken seriously. Think about this winter and how much you would have liked sitting in an open air stadium watching the Falcons.
If you don’t express your voice in a manner where it will really be heard, you will get what you don’t want and listen to the people who watch the game on television talk about how great it is that the team plays outdoors now.

Retractable roof is the best and smartest option. Why build a outdoor stadium and still keep the dome. It doesn’t make any sense. Atlanta can get a soccer team if they have a outdoor stadium BUT REALLY is any one going to go during the summer. HELL no! We all know this. Plus if they tear down the dome they can save money on the new seats they just installed 2 years ago. I feel sorry for all of us though because I believe the state will pick up the tab. IF it’s Atlanta only fine I live in Vinings so I wouldn’t have to foot that bill.

Another classic case of government wasting money. The money used for the new stadium could go to the Hope grants. The Georgia dome is not even 20 years old is it. How is it that the Super Dome in New Orleans can get upgrade after upgrade and be useful but here we need a new stadium? Wasteful and a shame! If the NFL does not want give Atlanta a SuperBowl then screw them. Grown people need to get their priorities straight. It is a shame that neither political party is taking a stand against this waste. The USA is going to hell in a hand basket over waste like this.

I am a 10 yr season ticket holder, I have no problem with the current dome. If I get this right, Blank wants to build an open air stadium, with fewer seats, and more luxurious suites? The falcons currently have great home field dome advantage and their protected from the elements. Why mess that up? But if Blank insist on a new stadium, Let him absorb 100% of the cost. We just cut the HOPE scholarships, Pensions are next, and some people in this state actually want to help fund a 700 million dollar stadium. Am I the only one that see the problem with this? The tax revenue the Falcons bring the city is no where near what it will cost tax payers in the short term, and if you keep adding sales tax to rental cars and hotels you are going to kill the already sluggish convention business here as well.

I’ll let you all continue the open air debate, but here is my issue…
There isnt near enough parking as it is. Tailgating atmosphere is awful unless you were able to sell your firstborn and get an orange pass. Read the document and look at the maps carefully, they say that parking spots will increase, BUT that most of them will require a 20 minute walk to the stadium. I am thankfully able-bodied and can walk 20 minutes if I need to… I just dont want to. Everyone always makes comments about how Falcon fans aren’t in the Dome early enough. Give us a 20 minute walk, that will fix it.
Also, the proposed site is now a 20 minute walk from MARTA, instead of the 1 minute walk that it is now. It is no great pleasure to ride MARTA, but I do it quite a bit because it is CONVENIENT and it eliminates the ole drinking and driving.
With the Braves you cant take MARTA buyt at least you can park. If this goes through as is, for the Falcons you wont be able to park or ride MARTA. Might as well build the stadium in the infield of Talladega.
Please either leave things the way they are or move it to the northside perimiter and put some parking spots around it. Anything but this.

The suites will be air conditioned!!! Georgia lawmakers and corporate execs will not be affected by the weather. There really is no need to be concerned. They won’t have to worry about walking because there will be a huge VIP parking section.
Stop worrying about the rich, this setup will allow them to feel like they are in a dome.
This will be a great place for the lobbyists. Georgia can expect some big deals to be made here, deals that were hampered by the old worn out Dome.

Apparently, the President isn’t the only one living in a bubble. Anyone who is seriously considering this idea needs to take a look at the financial situation of the State, City, and County. There are far more worthy projects waiting for $700 million dollars. August and early September are too hot usually to play football in the outdoors. I don’t need to mention last months weather. That leaves 3 months where there is potentially good football weather. After what happened in Dallas, the Supper Bowl may only be played in cities that never see snow and ice in January or early February. If the Falcons want to make more money off of their games, let them build the stadium themselves and get all the money!

Plus they are continuing to go up on the ticket prices. That location is showing us who take Marta any consideration. Are they gonna provide a Shuttle from Marta to the game. The Seniors who come to the games, cannot and should not have to sit in the weather. If the Falcons move to a outside stadium, I think they will lose a lot of season ticket holders like myself. If you lose patrons how will you pay for this. Why build a new Stadium simply because the Falcons want one, and when they put new seats and remodeled the Dome? This is a waste of money if you know you want an outside field. Mr. Blank if you want a new field I think you need to pay for it out of your pocket.

Also, the people talking about the state cutting the HOPE program are morons. The state is not cutting anything. The program is funded by the lottery. The programs popularity outgrew the funding source. Too many students, not enough lottery players. How is their a cut in this. The funding remains the same. In order to cut the state would have to take money and use it for something else. When it first came out they had so much extra money they bought thousands of computers for schools that could not even use them and they sat in wharehouse. Now every in georgia wants some of the money so their is less to go around. That is not a cut.

I am glad to see Atlanta Falcon football return outdoors. Atlanta weather screams for it … Way too many Sundays I’ve dreaded going inside the dome on our beautiful fall days. And football is meant to be outdoors with real grass stains on the pants! BUT I sure hope that Artie has a promissory note from Roger about that coveted Super Bowl b/c I cannot believe Atlanta will be able to convince the NFL to trust us that the weather will cooperate, given our icey weather in 2000 Super Bowl and Dallas’ weather this year. Seems the smarter bet would be to build a dome with retractable roof on existing dome location and not have two large stadiums within a stones throw of each other to maintain. I’m just sayin.

I am the Atlanta fan. I want it not to be too cold and not too hot, just right for me. Not too windy either, because that could get uncomfortable and totally ruin my Mall-like football experience. I do not want any “dead air”. I need Toyota commercials blasting at 115db in between all stoppage of play. I must also be abel to solve the ball under the helmet game, so make sure that one gets repeated over and over. If you get to sit on my row, be prepared for me to come in mid-first quarter and for me to get up about 15 times during the game in order to buy Nachos and hot dogs. Don’t worry, I’ll be gone 2 minutes into the fourth quarter.

Personally, I find going to the Dome to be too tough in September/December. I have to go outside and load the cooler into my car and I sometimes get hot and I’m forced to drink water. It’s very troubling. Once I park, I’m forced to get out of my car and walk to the Dome in the burning heat. My skin is exposed to harmful UV rays and I risk dehydration. The winter is even worse. I am forced to dress in multiple layers and take precaution that I might not make it in and become forced to live in the elements on Falcons Landing. I bring extra energy bars and glove warmers. Before exiting the car, me and my friends always decide on which one of us would sacrifice our bodies for food if we don’t make it in. I had to do it for the playoff game this year and the idea of my friends eating my leg was very troubling.
Mr. Blank should build every Falcons fan a covered parking slip with a heated/cooled walkway to the entrance of the Dome.
This Atlanta weather could be deadly at any second. I heard it’s supposed to rain Friday. THINK OF THE CHILDREN!!!!

First, I think a new stadium is a waste of money at this time. I also can’t believe they will not consider a retractable roof. I remember how miserable the old Fulton County Stadium was for the Falcons games during not only in the September heat and humidity and December cold winds. I think the NFL will not reward Atlanta with a Super Bowl because of the two ice storms during the last ones we hosted. I think the NFL even noted the previous ice storms as a reason for Atlanta was being passed over from at least one of the previous Super Bowl bids.

I’ve been to a Falcons game every year since they’ve been in Atlanta – the hottest I have ever been was at a Falcons/New Orleans game and the coldest I have ever been was at a Falcons/New Orleans game – the outside idea ignores that the weather here is too diverse to allow support of an outdoor facility – try a Peach Bowl game in the dead of winter while rain and freezing rain makes you skip the second half if you bothered to show up at all – you know us humans are pretty smart – we created AC and heating to deal with the elements not to mention the idea of a roof – after experiencing both options since the franchise’s birth, I vote for a roof – if you absolutely must have the outdoor experience, build a retractable roof, but the idea that your not a football fan because you’d rather avoid the elements is synonymous with saying that you’d rather live in Green Bay because the weather confirms that your an NFL football fan – if it’s outdoors, I’m out

Your government in action. All the conservatives b*tch about socialism, but I’m sure they support the new stadium for AB (heck, they are the only ones who can afford the tickets). Building stadiums at taxpayer expense for the benefit of millionare owners is a prime example of socialism – tax the poor to pay for it and let the rich get a new building, and I’m sure parking, concession and naming fees. Love the Falcons and pro football for Atlanta, but not when we have to pay for it through our taxes and then can’t afford a ticket to the game.

Guaranteed we will lose more season ticket holders than we gain. Pro football season extends way beyond Thanksgiving folks. If you are up for sitting through meaningless games in rainy 38 degree weather on January 2nd, I guess you are happy. Build a stadium with a retractable roof. This is a project that makes no sense for any GA taxpayer other than Arthur Blank but it is on a path to get done and it is a huge mismanagement of government resources. This is not a football issue but a taxpayer issue. In bad economic times, it is not prudent to spend like a drunken sailor (no offense intended to drunken sailors). Will Atlanta get the Super Bowl if we build, yes, absolutely since that is the carrot the NFL holds out to cities to overspend taxpayer dollars for its team owner’s benefit. But, as any good economist will tell you, who cares? The Super Bowl is not some great economic engine. Bottom line is that the current stadium is fine and not too old. If Arthur would like a new stadium, he is welcome, like anyone else, to spend his own funds and those willing to loan him money to build this building. He will control it and get all the revenues from it. This is capitalism. Having government tax revenues pay anything better be a great deal for the government and this just isn’t a good taxpayer deal. Building large beautiful building for the same purpose every 20 years or so is a huge waste of resources. These buildings are made to last much longer and should be allowed to last for them to make economic sense. Can someone in power please shut down the negotiations by shutting off any taps to government funds or borrowing power? Please.

Positive news not just for the Falcons is the possibility of MLS coming to Atlanta. That league is on the rise, and soccer is too. The city can support 16 home games outdoors better than it can 41 hockey games indoors. MLS is on the way up, NHL is moving back into niche/regional appeal. You’ll see way more soccer gear being worn around town than hockey too.

There are specific people who will benefit from the stadium. Let THEM pay for it. And don’t give me any crap about “everyone benefits” when the city gets its cut. Again, certain people benefit and most of them PAY NOTHING. Those of us who don’t benefit at all from city services constantly pay and pay and pay.
This should not be a discussion about dome, no dome, how hot atlanta is, etc. It should be about who is going to pay, and how fast the Falcons can get their damn bags packed when they realize that the citizens are tired of subsidizing their huge profits.

FIFA – Yes. FIFA has some rule about the game being played in a stadium in open elements. So it would have to be open or a retractable roof. I read several times that they wanted to come back to the US, but they wanted some games to be played in Atlanta and the Georgia Dome wasn’t sufficient.
It won’t be shiny and new for the next World Cup to come to the Americas but it will meet the specifications required by FIFA.

Even as a fan of having an open air stadium, I have a hard time justifying spending tax dollars on it. I do think a stadium like Qwest Field in Seattle would be cool. open-air but 70% of the seats are covered.

No no no no no. If Arthur Blank wants to own a stadium, the State of Georgia needs to sell him the Dome at market value. then he can configure the box seats and corporate areas anyway he wants to and rent it out for concerts, SEC games, etc. The Dome is a fine venue for football and it is well located for big events.
It would be STUPID for the City of Atlanta to have two NFL-class stadiums. Put a huge screen in the Dome and fix it up some, but don’t leave it for an outdoor stadium.
If Arthur wants a new stadium, it should come 100% from private funds. No hotel taxes, no public money, no rental car taxes, no bonds or leases or backroom deals. You want it, you build it.

The argument should be whether or not football is supposed to be played indoors or outdoors. The issue is that the Falcons have a home that is more than adequate. If they currently had an decent outdoor stadium and they were proposing a Dome, the same lunacy would be in place. I see stadiums in Jacksonville, Nashville, and other cities still idle during the offseason. The Dome is used over 250+ days a year and it functions fine hosting all sorts of different events. So it can’t host soccer? Is soccer really a good reason to build a $700,000,000 stadium? Hell no!

The rich just gets richer, while the rest of us get screwed. This is beyond outrageous. Time to impeach Deal.

Again – I don’t understand why my idea isn’t the best one out there – Sell the Dome at market value to Arthur Blank. Let him own it, make renovations, add luxury box seating, make the roof retractable, and rent it out to the SEC, ACC, and anyone else that wants to rent it. He could make tons of money on it and have the stadium that he wants. The State of Georgia could reduce its financial burdens by unloading the Dome for hundreds of millions of dollars. When did it become the job of the State to build and operate facilities like the GA Dome anyway?
Just think how awesome the Dome could be with some renovations and a new roof! Blank could reduce the seating to 65,000, have plenty of space for corporate seating, and make money renting the facility. It’s a WIN/WIN for the Falcons and the State of Georgia.
I offer my concept and awesome idea for free. Enjoy.

Deal’s taking money from the hope scholarship and will use those millions to give to his big fatcat buddy, Arthur Blank to build that new state of the art stadium—even worse, Blank keeps 100% of the proceeds from ticket sales, concessions, merchandise, parking, etc. Atl gets chump change from “sales tax revenue.” What a joke.

There was a time when the NFL liked the “no weather worries” of Domes, but now they see the opportunity of owning soccer teams that can play in NFL stadiums, so they want open air stadium stadiums for dual use: soccer and NFL football.
Now, instead of the certainty of playing in a Dome without weather being a factor, all the talk is about “football is meant to be played in the outdoors”
Folks, it is very, very manipulative. They don’t care about the present NFL fan base – their attitude is fans will have to accept it – it is all about making more bucks by adding soccer.
The genius NFL owners are going to screw up the good thing they have now – pro soccer in the US will fall on its rear, and NFL fans will turn to college football.

Not one dime for Arthur Blank and the Falcons. They have a perfectly good stadium to play in without saddling the taxpayer with one more ounce of debt.
If Arthur Blank wants a stadium, he should take out a mortgage and spend his own money. Or, cede 10-15 percent of the franchise value to the taxpayers.
I haven’t been to a game in 10 years, though I was a season ticket holder for more than 15. The thugs, bums, and ne’er do wells who live and die by the exploits of a paid NFL team got the best of me.
The last game I went to my 75 year-old father in law was acosted by three drunks, sitting in his own seat, minding his own business.
Never again, and not one dime for the NFL, beyond what they already have.

Does it make sense that the Government complains that they are broke and they cant use tax money to pay for education, but they can certainly use $700+ million of tax money to spend on a new stadium that will be used about 10 times a year? Cant they put that $700 million in the HOPE fund if the lottery fund is going dry? It makes NO sense to build a new stadium when there is a perfect one a mile away from the new site. Arthur Blank wants the fans to have the real football experience, so does that mean that he will sit outside with the fans? Hell no. Hes going to chillin in the climate controlled suite laughing at all the idiots sitting there in the humid Atlanta fall weather. Blank wants a new, smaller stadium at taxpayers expense. Think about it, it the Falcons turn out to be good within the next decade, there will be more demand for tickets. If there are less seats, the prices will skyrocket. Blank will be laughing all the way to the bank.
Are the Falcons really worth it to sit outside to watch? When was the last time they won a playoff game? Does Blank really expect the Atlanta “fair weather” fans to sit through the elements to watch his mediocre football team? Who the hell wants to be uncomfortable and pay a couple hundred bucks to watch a game? Whats does being a true fan even mean? Cant one be a true fan and still be comfortable? Why should he have to sacrifice his comfortableness just to proves he likes a football team? This has disaster written all over it.
For all the idiots saying that football is meant to be played and watched outside. I can guarantee when football was first invented, if they had the artificial turf technology back then, they would have certainly used it and played indoors. The only reason it was played outside was because they needed grass.

Hope scholarships are funded by LOTTERY profits, a tax on the poor who chose to pay the lottery in hopes of striking it rich themselves. The stadium is to be funded by the hotel/motel tax, a tax on those wealthy enough to make Atlanta a business or entertainment destination. Nothing crass about it at all. Arthur Blank is a smart man, but he totally stumps me on this one. Also his stubborness to keep a stadium in downtown Atlanta flies against all economic sense. Build a retractable roof stadium at the old GM location at 285 and 85N and the Falcons would pick up thousands of upper middle class suburbanites who will not fight the traffic mess downtown currently. I’ve been a STH since the Dome opened and never use all my tickets in a season because fighting the hassle of getting there and back gets to be too much 10 times a year. I sure wouldn’t do it one time a year to sit in freezing rain or 90% humidity. We get both in a football season.

We’re in the midst of a climate shift; more moisture in the air colliding with the northern jet stream dipping further south winter after winter because the Arctic ice caps are melting and no longer buffer the cold jet stream from roaring south more frequently. Having said that, the Super Bowl held anywhere north of Tampa is a bad idea. Think Dallas recently.

I’ll never attend a game outdoors again. The last outdoor Falcons game I attended at the old Fulton County stadium was the coldest I’ve ever been. I left at half-time and never attended an outdoor game again. Why would the players want to play outside anyway? This past season it sure looked like the teams from the ‘cold zones’ loved playing inside the dome. The dome sure beats the heck out of 20 degrees and a 15 MPH northwest wind! Dear AB, we don’t live in Green Bay and like it 70 degrees and sunny.

It’s an old bargaining tool—throw out an outrageous first offer, then “back down” to something more reasonable that the “other side” prefers. Blank will end up with a billion retractable roof stadium, but he had to create opposition to the first idea then the public will gladly pay for “their idea” of a retractable roof stadium with all the bells and whistles that blank wants—and he keeps all the profits, but atl taxpayers pay all the costs. That is why he is a billionaire.

To the idiots who think this is about sitting outdoors; as usual the concept of what this is truly about has escaped your limited intellect. Politicians love mindless sheep like you. Its about money morons. More profit for Mr. Blank coming in by using tax dollars to subsidize construction costs. Its really simple business and I don’t necessarily say I disagree with it, but that is the issue at which you must FOCUS-FOCUS-FOCUS. If you want an open air stadium and think the dome isnt good enough, then support it. If you think it is not a wise expenditure of your tax dollars, then oppose it. A stadium out of downtown, really? 1st, do you for one second think the peach bowl, final four, SEC Championship, Super Bowl or any other high profile event wants to be or will be hosted in Doraville?? Why don’t we just give our events to Tampa and Charlotte? 2nd, when the world has its eyes on ATL during these events even with all the problems downtown has, would you want the world to associate our city with the sights of Doraville, perhaps the brandmart USA or the bustling city and one of the best skylines in the country? Now the best scenario would be a site near MARTA in midtown but there just isn’t enough land.

The Republicans in the state house can pay for this if they want.
Oh, but if you do, don’t ever again give me this “fiscal responsibility” stuff — you forfeit any right to cut teacher salaries or screw over students or eliminate scholarships or pull anything else to “balance the budget.” (You also forfeit, for that matter, any right to raise my taxes — though you can tax the rich more if you want. It seems only fair if you’re giving them free stadiums.)
If you’re going to blow this much money on a stadium — knowing full well that the economic benefit from this sort of thing is always non-existent — then don’t ever again get to talk to me about budget cuts or fiscal sanity or anything else. If you don’t have money to pay for basic services and the next generation’s education, THEN YOU DON’T HAVE MONEY TO PAY FOR THIS. If you have money to pay for this, then you have money to pay for education.
Now, if Blank can pay for it, great. But we shouldn’t.

I am old enough to remember Falcons games and the Peach Bowl (now Chick-Fil-A) prior to the Dome being in existence. The stadium was Atlanta-Fulton County and admittedly you were playing football in a baseball stadium. The thing that sticks most in my mind is the awful weather. It would not be snowing, but by December/January the weather is rainy and cool or cold. No one would enjoy the games and the field was a mud pit. The main reason the Super Bowl has not returned to the Dome is that the last time it was here, there was an Ice Storm and it paralyzed the city. The Dome is perfectly fine in size and it is still a pretty inovative arena. The Peach Bowl has dramatically improved every yeat in the Dome and the SEC Championship just extended its contract. Why? Because the facility is the nicest in an Southeast and it is climate controlled. Build a new open air facility and the Super Bowl may come here and play in it once. When all the celebrities get cold, they’ll complain about why it was ever scheduled here and it will never come back. Just look at Dallas. Nicest stadium in the league, but because of the snow, it will have trouble getting the Super Bowl to come back. Stick some money in the Dome to improve it and move on.

By the way, the people saying that this isn’t really public money because the Georgia Dome was funded by hotel/motel taxes…huh? Those taxes could have been used for something else, you know. Money…it’s fungible. A dollar saved on one thing can be spent on something else.
