The Mockiavelli 1.0: A.J Green goes No. 1 overall

If the Liberty Bowl is A.J. Green's last game at UGA, will he be remembered as the best receiver in school history? Brant Sanderlin/bsanderlin@ajc.com

A.J. Green , of Summerville, S.C., won't have to travel far as the Carolina Panthers will select him No. 1 overall in the 2011 NFL draft. (Brant Sanderlin/bsanderlin@ajc.com)

Here it is, the first Mock Draft of draft season.

Most of the teams have their draft boards set going into the combine, which starts on Thursday.

They are on targeted missions for more information on players and will adjust their boards accordingly after the combine.

The Falcons are all set, too.

“We just finished our February cross-check meetings and we have, through that process, really refined our position

stacks across our draft board,” general manager Thomas Dimitroff told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “We are starting to narrow down on potential draft picks going into the combine. We feel like we are right on track where we planned on being at this point.”

The Falcons could go a couple of different directions  in the first round, but given the depth at the defensive end position I have them taking Allen Bailey from Miami. More on him later.

“Those draft meetings in February are vital because we are able to move away from the generalize stack by position to a much more specific stack,” Dimitroff said. “At this point in the year, you get to a point were you feel that the pieces are really starting to come together.”

All righty then, on to Mockiavelli 1.0.

A.J. Green is the best player in the draft, so he’s going No. 1. It’s really that simple.

“The game that really caught my eye, was when he came back against Colorado,” NFL Network draft analyst Mike “On

Cam Newton, QB, Auburn: The College Park native passed for 265 yards and two touchdowns and ran for another 64 to lead the Tigers to their first national title since 1957 and a 14-0 season. The Heisman Trophy winner had a passer rating 182.05, while throwing for 2,854 yards and 30 TDs. Mark J. Terrill, Associated Press

the Money” Mayock said. “Colorado has got two NFL corners in Jimmy Smith and Jalil Brown. He came out and he had like seven catches for 118, 120 yards and two touchdowns. He dominated the game.” Check the video.

Green will interview well with teams and that will help him rise to the top of the draft.

“He’s got the best combination of height, weight and speed and he can catch the ball,” Mayock said. “I believe he’s physical enough to get off of press coverage. If you are every going to look at a wide receiver and say this is a guy that’s going to fit any offense, A.J. is the guy.”

He’ll be the first of three Georgia Bulldogs going in the first round.

Offensive lineman Clint Boling is going to Chicago with the 29th pick and Linebacker Justin Houston is going to New York Jets with the 30th pick.

THE BOOK OF BAILEY: The “Book of Bailey” is not all good.

He was inconsistent at Miami and didn’t make plays to match his athleticism.

He will have to interview well in Indianapolis and more importantly defensive line coach Ray Hamilton will have to figure out if he can motivate this kid and turn him into a stud.

He’s going to be the biggest, fastest and strongest defensive end at the combine. With his athletic ability, Bailey should put on absolute combine show.

But there are some issues  . . . .

“He has all of the tools,” ESPN draft analyst Todd McShay said. “It just hasn’t all come together yet. I think part of it is inconsistent effort. Sometimes you see him and he’s not going 100 miles an hour.”

OK, that’s going to be a big problem. But Hamilton can fix it.

“But I also think part of it is his instincts and consistently knowing what he wants to do in certain situations,” McShay said. “He’s played different positions. That could factor into it, that he hasn’t really settled into what he’s doing. He’s struggled sometimes getting off blocks.”

The Falcons will likely view him as a scheme fit at left end.

“I think he could be a good player in the NFL, I just don’t think its all come together,” McShay said. “He has to continue to work and be willing to pay the price in order to get there. If he does, he could wind up being a steal in the second round.”

He could be a steal at 27 in the first, too.

AJC’s 2011 Mockiavelli 1.0

Staff writer D. Orlando Ledbetter projects the first round:

1. Carolina: A.J. Green, WR, Georgia: They get Jimmy Clausen a weapon and look to trade Steve Smith.

2. Denver: Da’Quan Bowers, DE, Clemson: They go for the elite pass rusher.

3. Buffalo: Nick Fairley, DT, Auburn: Chan Gailey elects to take on this disruptive force to anchor his defense.

4. Cincinnati: Julio Jones, WR, Alabama: Bye-bye T.O. and OchoCinco. They can pair Jones with Jordan Shipley, Jerome Simpson and tight end Jermaine Gresham in the passing game.

5. Arizona: Marcell Dareus, DT, Alabama: Some have him rated over Fairley.

6. Cleveland: Patrick Peterson, CB, LSU: With Peterson and Joe Haden the Browns will have their best cornerback tandem since Hanford Dixon and Frank Minnifield.

7. San Francisco: Cam Newton, QB, Auburn: The Alex Smith experience is officially over. Newton will face some scrutiny at the combine, but if he is frank with teams, he’ll be the top QB selected.

8. Tennessee: J.J. Watt, DE, Wisconsin: “I’m very impressed with J.J. Watt from Wisconsin,” Mayock said.

9. Dallas: Von Miller, LB, Texas A&M: The Cowboys get some help for their front seven.

10. Washington: Blaine Gabbert, QB, Missouri:  “On the Money” Mayock has Gabbert rated as the top quarterback in the draft.

11. Houston: Prince Amukamara, CB, Nebraska: They have to improve the worst secondary in the league.

12. Minnesota: Ryan Mallett, QB, Arkansas: I can’t imagine the conversation between Bill Musgrave and Bobby Petrino over this one. Hey they are professionals and will work it out.

13. Detroit: Anthony Castonzo, OT, Boston College: The Lions get quarterback Matthew Stafford some protection.

14. St. Louis: Robert Quinn, DE, North Carolina: It seems like the Rams have been drafting defensive linemen for the last decade.

15. Miami: Mark Ingram, RB, Alabama: They get Ingram to help the aging backfield.

16. Jacksonville: Adrian Clayborn, DE, Iowa: They get a bookend for Tyson Alualu.

17. New England: Nate Solder, OT, Colorado: The Patriots’ line is starting to show come cracks.

18. San Diego: Akeem Ayers, OLB, UCLA: Larry English (remember him) has been a bust.

19. New York Giants: Corey Liuget, DT, Illinois: They fortify their defensive front.

20.  Tampa Bay, Cam Heyward, DE, Ohio State:  “Just put their bowl game,” Mayock said. “He dominated that game. He was phenomenal against Arkansas.”

21. Kansas City: Gabe Carimi, OT, Wisconsin: Their offensive line was not up to playoff standards last season.

22. Indianapolis: Tyron Smith, OT, UCLA: They get Smith in order to improve Peyton Manning’s protection. He took too many hits last season.

23. Philadelphia: Brandon Harris, CB, Miami: Harris will come up in run support and the Eagles are getting very thin at the position.

24. New Orleans: Ryan Kerrigan, DE, Purdue: He’s one of those super motor guys.

25. Seattle: Jake Locker, QB, Washington:  Matt Hasselbeck won’t play forever. The Seahawks go with the local legend who’ll eventually compete with Charlie Whitehurst for the starting job.

26. Baltimore: Jimmy Smith, CB, Colorado:  They address a need.

27. Atlanta: Allen Bailey, DE, Miami: See above!

28. New England: Aldon Smith, DE, Missouri: They get some more help for the young defense.

29. Chicago: Clint Boling, OL, Georgia: Offensive line coach Mike Tice worked wonders with the offensive line last season.

30. New York Jets: Justin Houston, OLB, Georgia: The Jets need another pass rusher as Jason Taylor is getting old and Vernon Gholston’s hasn’t panned out.

31. Pittsburgh: Mike Pouncey, G, Florida: He joins his brother and the twins anchor the line for the next decade.

32. Green Bay: Stephen Paea, DT, Oregon State: They always go with the biggest, baddest and meanest dude left on the board. That’s Paea, even though they have B.J. Raji.

ON THE FRINGE: Aaron Williams, CB, Texas; Marcus Cannon, OL, TCU; Christian Ballard, DE, Iowa; Titus Young, W,  Boise State;  Torrey Smith, WR, Maryland; Kyle Rudolph, TE, Notre Dame; Danny Watkins, OL, Baylor; Cam Jordan, DE, California; Martrez Wilson, LB, Illinois and Rahim Moore, S, UCLA.

Dang, #1 pick, and Aaron Murray couldn’t beat a single winning team with AJ Green on the field? What a waste of talent!

I think AJ has Hall of Fame ability and, despite a single lack of judgement, has his head in the game. Dimitrof rates himself as a better “drafter” than he actually is. Baker and Jerry are not 1st round players. Also can anyone tell me the impact of Robert James, William Middleton or Spencer Adkins. To me he often tries to outsmart other GM’s with finding an obscure diamond in the rough. Certainly Dimitrof has had some hits with DeCoud, Ryan, Lofton but he seems to really be drafting no better than most other GM’s.

Why would the Falcons want to regress and take a chance on a draft pick they know already has issues? From what I’m reading, in addition to not getting off of his blocks, it sounds as if he has all the skills need but just not as committed as he could be. IMHO, that tranlates into attitude issues. Why subject the locker room to this type of player? One need to look no further than the Redskins or Bengals to understand what I mean. I would much rather see the Falcons draft a player who wants to be a team player. I know we need DE help but, just saying…

I don’t see this guy being self motivated enough. If Kerrigan drops, we might opt for him. Otherwise, even in DOL’s layout, I’d prefer the 3 guys AFTER Bailey to Bailey himself; I highly doubt Kerrigan drops, so we need an impact player (RB, WR, LB, S) – I think we draft LeShore or Torrey Smith. Now, if Pouncy, Carimi or Solder are available, they would be priority 1A after Kerrigan.

Allan Bailey is from our neighboring county, and scuttlebutt has it that he didn’t go to UGA because it was too cold in Athens. Well, I tell you it was not a good reason for him to go to Miami. Living on Sapelo Island and having to take the ferry each morning and afternoon to school from his home island made Allan a determined young man. Sorry his stint wasn’t as good as it should have been at Miami, but I think his internal/family work ethic will make him a star. I do think he should have been a Dawg, but as a coastal GA person, I wish him the very best.

Exhibit number 2008: Why couldn’t Richt win a National Championship with what was in effect an NFL team at UGA? Just think of the raw talent on that team. Because of his incompetence, these superstars played Michigan State in the Capital One bowl that year.

Folks, here’s the scoop. Murray isn’t all he’s cracked up to be. We will need a bigger and better QB if we ever want to win a championship anytime soon. But then again, Richt doesn’t have what it takes to lead the team to anything other than an overall winning record at this point. I will give him credit for hiring some good staff such as Grantham and the new Redskins guy, but in order to win a championship the head coach has to be present for duty and make some timely decisions in addition to motivating and disciplining the team. He’s a dud in all these categories.

Hmmm… THREE UGA first round draft picks. Hmmmm… A losing season from Mark Richt with three first round NFL draft picks and a bucket load of 4 and 5 star talent. Why? Same reason as in 2008 when he coached a virtual NFL studded team with Stafford, Moreno and Company. Even the most stubborn and dim Mark Richt supporter in the world has to see the obvious. Mark Richt cannot coach. And the Bulldog Nation is paying him $3Million per year to disappoint…

You were right last year. We need the “other” pouncey and rebuild the o-line for the future to grow with ryan. Biermann did good this season and was close to a lot of sacks. ITs clear TD and Smitty are taking the “LET THEM GROW” method i.e. Brent Grimes

I say give Biermann one more off-season for him to get into his prime, given IT WAS HIS 1ST YEAR STARTING ALL DOWNS. O-line and backups are key. NO SEXY PICKS…

As someone who has seen all of the many great SEC receivers this past season in person numerous times (AJ, Julio, Alshon and the whole crew at Arkansas), as well as Calvin Johnson from Tech and Dez Bryant from Okie State a couple of years ago, I think that it’s safe to say that AJ Green is the best of all of them. His speed is great, his leaping ability phenomenal and his hands are unbelievable. Is he as good a blocker as Julio? Perhaps not, but he has a God-given ability to know where his body is in space that NONE of the other receivers mentioned above have. He makes catches he simply should not make. I was sitting in the end zone in the Colorado game when he had an NFL-caliber corner all over him and he caught a TD pass one-handed falling down in the corner of the end zone. Julio doesn’t make that catch; neither does Jeffery. And AJ is solid–he’s no weakling. His stiff-arm is lethal, and he can rip the ball away from virtually any DB. So, WDE, sorry. Julio will not be taken before AJ by anyone. The NFL scouts have seen all the film. Julio Jones is a great receiver, but AJ Green is a once-in-a-decade talent. ‘Nuff said.

I see Carolina picking Da’Quan Bowers 1st. Like most, I don’t see a WR going 1st.

Some of yall might be a little too quick to judge Allen Bailey just from DOL’s comments. Being a project in this case does not mean Bailey lacks character and I don’t think it means he lacks effort. He settled in nicely at DE at the end of the season. Started all 13 of Miami’s games, playing mostly as a defensive end while also moving inside on some third down situations … recorded a team-high seven sacks and 11 tackles for a loss for the second straight season … 11 tackles behind the line. He was a Lott Trophy finalist; criteria of which looks at character, not just athleticism. A Sapelo Island product who would probably love being a Falcon. I couldn’t find anything negative about him in the miamiherald.com. Teammates and coaches love him; as do most ‘Canes fans. Okay, he may not be what the Falcons want; they’ll evaluate him fairly. But he should not be thought of as an Aundray Bruce.

I have to say i highly disagree with the Bailey pick for first round. He may be a 2nd or 3rd round pick. I believe wr is big need along with pass rush and secondary. We had big problem not wrapping up tackles this year. Not that players were bad but just missed assignments at times. We need somebody to compliment Roddy. I personally like Torrey Smith and Jon Baldwin. Baldwin is a beast but may have character issues. Smith reminds me of Roddy. Another talent at wr that could be a steal in 2nd round and may even be better than the two is Leonard Hankerson. As far as a beast of a DE I would love to get Kerrigan although I believe he will be long gone. None of this will really matter until after free agency signings and trades. Atlanta does have alot of money to spend to reach salary cap compared to other teams. The A-Team will figure it out.
